There was an animal complaint on campus on Oct. 5. A small deer was stuck in the fence near the Wattis Building. An officer pulled the deer out of the fence and did not notice any injuries to the deer. The deer ran off and the officer cleared the area.

car was not registered to a student or faculty member. Parking services were notified to boot the car in an attempt to have the owner contact WSU police. The driver later called to explain they had run out of gas and had to abandon the car for a short time. The boot was removed.

The writing on the wall WSU officers received a report of graffiti at the Community Outreach Center on Oct. 7 around 1 p.m. There is no clear suspect information or time frame in which the graffiti occurred. A report was created for informational purposes and photographs of the graffiti were added to the case.

I saw the sign A reflective crosswalk sign was located in the middle of the roadway on Dixon Drive on Oct. 9. An officer noted that the sign was broken at the base and cracked on the reflective face. It may have occurred as a result of a vehicle striking the sign. The sign was taken to WSUPD’s safe-keep cage. There is currently no camera footage or information regarding why the sign was damaged.

Talking about her history of being part of the LGBTQ community, Marcia White gives advice to her audience about how people should focus on being their authentic selves without fear of what others will think of them.

Marcia White, the keynote speaker for the Marquardt Speaker Series, Peace and Possibility Project, spoke about the importance of her inner compass, core values and beliefs, and how they have helped her achieve her goals and pursue her dreams.

The Peace and Possibility Project aims to bring LGBTQ leaders and advocates to campus to cultivate inclusiveness, cultural opportunities and the ally community, funded by Jane and Tami Marquardt.

Marcia White has served on the Ogden City Council for the past eight years and has been the first openly gay woman on the council.

“We chose Marcia White for this year’s keynote address because she is an engaging and amazing LGBTQ+ leader in the Ogden community through her service on the Ogden City Council and her work addressing inequalities in our community,” Jayson Stokes, coordinator of the LGBT Resource Center, said. “She is an incredible role model and advocate and a fundamental voice in our Ogden community.”

Her first belief is that family is important.

Growing up in a God-fearing family in Nebraska, White recounted a story from her youth: “I sat down and my mom said, ‘I just don’t understand your unnatural attraction to women.’ And I thought, ‘Gosh, that’s an awkward conversation starter.’”

From that experience White said she learned that while these conversations can be hard, at least her mother started that conversation off.

“I’m not great at conversing, but one of the best things that I have learned is that if you have one hard conversation, then you can

build on the next hard conversation,” White said.

White continued by saying that without love, thoughtfulness and friendship, goals and accomplishments are valueless.

“A lot of times people ask me why I even want to be on the city council,” White said.

“The best thing about it is that I’ve been able to meet people like yourselves, people that I’ve been able to interact with, lasting friendships, people that I’ll be able to say are my friends forever. And that to me is bigger and better than anything I could have imagined.”

White believes that doing what you think is right isn’t predestined.

“Sometimes you’ll say something and then you’ll get some more information and it will change your course and it will change your journey, opinion or decision,” White said.

Jane Marquardt added that, when facing the backlash from opposing views, it’s important to have good friendships that you can rely on for support.

White said transparency and storytelling allow others to get to know each other. White recounted how she and her wife would volunteer to be on panels at the college and how it forced them to put themselves out there. From that, White also learned to be authentic and tear down walls of fear.

White ended with encouraging everyone to reflect on their inner compass and write down their values and beliefs. She also added that it is okay to disagree with each other, but to still share personal individual stories.

Homecoming week ended on a low when the Wildcats fell to the Montana State Bobcats 13–7 on Oct. 15.

Weber State tried to hold their own in the defensive showdown against Bobcat quarterback Matthew McKay, who has averaged 461.3 yards per game. The Wildcats’ defense held McKay to 76 yards passing, 12-of-19 throws and sacked him twice. It was all for naught as McKay ultimately led MSU to their sixth straight win of the season.

“The defense played absolutely phenomenal, ” Wildcat head coach Jay Hill said. “I’m very proud of the defense. We put them into some tough situations and they got out of them.”

“I feel like everyone was really disciplined,” senior linebacker Conner Mortensen said.

“Guys were just playing super hard and making really good plays, and everyone had each other’s backs and were hyped to be on the field.”

Mortensen finished the night with six tackles, and sophomore cornerback Maxwell Anderson led the Wildcats with eight.

Weber State offense didn’t capitalize on their team’s defensive strategy. Freshman quarterback Bronson Barron went 16-of-29 passing for 215 yards and was sacked four times and lost a fumble by the end of the night.

“We didn’t have all 11 of us doing what we need to do to have that same type of drive like

we did that first series,” Barron said. “It’s not what the other team’s doing; it’s just what we’re doing. We just gotta hold ourselves accountable.”

Barron’s return appeared to give the team a new energy to start off the game, leading the Wildcats to an opening 10-play 97-yard touchdown drive, beginning with a pass to senior wide receiver Rashid Shaheed.

The Wildcats ended the drive with what would be their only points of the night when junior running back Josh Davis found the edge on first-and-goal and ran in a touchdown from 9 yards out.

“Offensively, I don’t know what it is,” Hill said. “We went right down the field and looked phenomenal on the first drive.”

Following the strong outset, the Wildcats’ offense ran out of gas.

eight times for an average of 39.6 yards per punt and Montana State punter Bryce Leighton booted the ball seven times for a 40.6 yardsper-punt average.

“There were times we had stuff wide open, but don’t have time to get the ball off,” Hill said. “We had Rashid twice tonight for wide open touchdowns and get sacked. We got to find ways to protect the quarterback.”

Weber State heads north to the Pacific Northwest to take on No. 2-ranked Eastern Washington.

Several stalled drives led to punts from both sides through the rest of the half, taking the tie into the second half.

“In a way, I think we’re making offensive football too hard,” Hill said. “Block who you’re supposed to block; throw the ball to who you’re supposed to throw it to. Right now we need to get our mojo going on offense.”

The teams’ defenses were the stars of the last 30 minutes of play, but it was the Bobcats that put together enough plays to hit two field goals in the third quarter to take home the win.

The defensive struggle was on full display when in the first half a streak of six straight punts between the two teams occurred, and the second half saw a series of five straight punts.

My journey of discovering wild horses and the laws that protect them began on one fateful day two years ago. Little did I realize just how much these creatures would impact my life.

I spent weekend excursions, day trips and long hikes combined with hours spent on the range and capturing the routine of the wild mustang. While it may seem routine and

perhaps mundane to the average observer, my endeavors had offered a sense of peace and contentment. That is, until the summer of 2021.

To understand the history of wild mustang advocates, it’s important to grasp the history of the conflict between nature and politics.

Prior to 1971, when President Richard M. Nixon signed the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, the horses and burros were not protected.

rivatives of abandoned horses or runaways, roam throughout various areas of deserts and mountain ranges. Ranchers viewed horses and burros as “desert rats.”

Nixon chose to place the responsibility of the wild horses and burros on the shoulders of the Bureau of Land Management. They place a population cap on the herds of horses. This number is determined by the sustainability of the land compared to the number of horses in the herds.

However, this was not done scientifically,

which has become a problem. If the number of horses and burros exceeds this number, the BLM pursues removing the excess numbers via roundups. Roundups are done with helicopters, which can cause fear, panic and death among the herd.

The public lands the horses reside on are available to the public for recreation, as well as free-roaming livestock. According to the BLM, less than one-quarter of available forage within Herd Management Areas is allocated to wild horses. Livestock continues to occupy the

slowly diminishing.

Now, a place I visited for peace and happiness has become a place of sadness, advocacy and passion. Ranchers continue to apply pressure to the BLM, demanding a higher number of horses be removed.

Coupled with extreme drought conditions throughout the West, federal legislation was passed to make 2021 a record-breaking year for roundups. In an already contentious relationship between the BLM, cattle ranchers and advocates, the frustration grew.

As recently as July, roundups, sometimes referred to as gathers, have been performed.

In the local Onaqui herd, there were 307 horses removed. Once they are put in holding pins, they are put up for adoption. With the 127 horses that will be released back into the desert, there will be approximately 140 horses on the range.

Horses are an intelligent species. They are easily trained and have the ability to go from wild and free to broken and tamed. But is that what we, as Americans, want? Is the public re-

ally willing to watch these beautiful creatures die out?

If ranchers have their way about it, however, the legacy will be lost and our children and their children will only hear stories about these creatures. They will never know the feeling of having a wild horse gently place their face in their hand. And, it is ultimately for the sake of monetary gain.

Art is an expressive outlet for many, and it is no different for Kelie Hess, who visited Weber State University to present a speech titled “Living Beyond Your Limits” on Oct. 12. Hess is an abstract artist who primarily works with acrylic paints and recently had her artwork showcased at the Weber State Ogden campus.

Hess was born with a rare disease called multiple pterygium syndrome, which impacts her respiratory system, and she uses a wheelchair for most of her daily mobility. But her disability is not what she wishes to be remembered for, and she said it is not the thing that makes her unique.

During her speech, Hess expressed the

“more important” aspects of what makes her a unique individual, and she expressed how she has lived beyond her limitations every day.

Art allows for her personal expression and offers her the opportunity to escape from the daily monotony of routine.

Hess expressed that some think of disability as something sad or unfortunate while others view it as a source of inspiration and encouragement.

“Disability comes to all of us as our bodies change with age,” Hess said. “We all have perceptions of what disability is.”

Hess and her husband launched a business, Mindful Mobility, that aims to help mobility-challenged individuals with their wheelchair needs.

Hess said the business is the brainchild of

her husband. However, Hess manages the business’s social media and supports her husband in his vision and dreams for Mindful Mobility.

Hess also currently holds a full-time position at Utah State University at the Institute for Disability Research Policy and Practice. For the last five years, Hess has been the lead on a project that is personally meaningful: helping individuals with disabilities to secure jobs. At home, she is a beekeeper, a hobby Hess has been doing with her father for years.

Angela McLean, director of Disability Services at WSU, expressed the importance of having Hess come speak with the Wildcat community because she has an inspirational story.

“Kelie has experienced all of the ups and

downs of life as a Wildcat and beyond and brings a unique perspective to consider as we seek to improve educational opportunities for students on campus,” McLean said.

When McLean found out Hess was creating an art project related to her personal life experience, McLean thought it would be a great opportunity to invite Hess to showcase her work and have her speak to students at Weber State.

Hess attributes her successes to the support systems within her family and those that she formed at WSU and beyond.

Weber State University’s volleyball program has become a powerhouse in the Big Sky Conference over the past five years.

They’ve been displaying their skills this season since Sep. 23, having won eight straight games and dismantling their well-established rivals, the University of Northern Colorado, on Oct. 7. Weber State won all three sets of play with scores of 25–16, 25–17 and a dominant 25–6.

“I liked our focus from beginning to end,” Wildcat head coach Jeremiah Larsen said.

“We executed our game plan and competed at a high level.”

Their level of play is a part of the victorious culture Larsen established in 2015 when he took over the program.

“We’re a team that’s going to make the other team’s life hell,” senior middle blocker Sam Schiess said.

The Wildcats’ winning percentage has im-

proved every year since Larsen took the reins of the program and implemented an environment of competitiveness and accountability.

“I’ve seen a higher level of competitor on our team,” Wildcat senior outside hitter Rylin Adams said. “In our practices, we get after each other and compete and it’s been cool to see us develop that kind of mindset.”

In his second season at Weber State, Larsen led the Wildcat women to the team’s first winning record in seven years, stamping a 14–13 record on the year in Ogden.

2018 saw another jump in the win column and more records fell by the wayside. The team posted 18 wins to 10 losses on the season and went 13–5 in conference play. The 13 wins were the most conference victories in a single season for the ‘Cats since 1988, and the team entered the Big Sky Tournament as the No. 3 seed.

Larsen’s success took off to another level in 2019 when the team again finished with a 13–5 conference record and advanced to the

Big Sky Championship but fell to Northern Colorado.

The Wildcats’ core veteran leadership of senior players Adams, Schiess and Ashlyn Power led Weber State to the best finish in Weber State volleyball history in 2021 and broke records along the way, taking the ‘Cats to where they’d never been before.

The seniors are the pillars on the team and have spent their years on the court in front of the Wildcats faithfully spiking, serving and blocking Weber State to victory.

Adams was named the Big Sky MVP, while all three seniors were named to the All-Big Sky First Team for the 2020-21 spring season.

“We’re pretty experienced players when it comes to playing in pressure and being put in difficult situations, so we try to imitate that every day in practice,” Adams said.

landscape in the 2021 season.

“The cool thing is our team isn’t worried about wins and losses,” Adams said. “We’re worried about getting better every single day.”

It’s practicing long hours behind closed doors and developing their skills with the coaching staff that has really paid off for the team and has been crucial to the development of the victorious championship culture that has become associated with Wildcat volleyball.

“None of us would be here without them.

They’re the ones that bought into us and invested in us, and for a lot of us they’re the only ones that did,” Schiess said of the coaching staff. “So there’s a really special relationship between us and the coaches.”

Now the team’s over halfway through their

schedule and their most recent wins over Southern Utah University and Northern Arizona University are a measuring stick on where they are this season.

The Wildcat seniors also are getting to enjoy a normal season before graduating, with fans being able to come to the games and support the team this fall.

“It’s meant a lot to have those fans there and especially our families,” Schiess said. “It’s been cool to have the fans be a part of our success again.”

that have gotten us to where we’re at,” Schiess said. “But all the players and teammates that’ve come before us that’ve really laid the foundation for us to be able to achieve the success we’ve been having.”

Weber State is continuing to dominate this season, but they haven’t forgotten the past and where it all started.

“When we first got to Weber State, nobody cared about Weber State volleyball,” Adams said. “So for us to go and compete with the highest-level teams in the country, it was a huge deal.”

Bowling Green University, the champions of the MAC Conference, stood in the ’Cats’ way, but Weber State made history and won the university’s first NCAA Tournament win ever, defeating the Falcons in four sets.

“We fought and competed, and the last two seasons, that’s started to pay off for us a lot,” Schiess said. “We’ve won a lot of games because of it.”

Now that a culture has been put in place and the ‘Cats are a name in the Big Sky for volleyball, the team’s leaders want to continue their success and leave a legacy behind for the future of the program.

Weber State University’s women’s soccer team won their final home match of the season against Portland State University with a score of 3–2 on Oct. 17.

The match was the final game at home for the nine seniors on the team, who were escorted out to the match by their loved ones, and won their last game on their home turf.

“It’s hard. We have the best field in the conference,” senior midfielder Sadie Newsom

said. “It’s definitely going to be a huge part of my life that is over.”

The match was a thrilling one as both squads made key plays to keep their respective teams in the game. Hailey Price scored two goals in the contest: one in the third minute of play and the other in the 18th minute to make the score 2–1 at the half.

“There was a lot of emotions today, and I think a lot of that went into the game today, and that’s why it was we made a little harder for ourselves than needed,” Price said. “All the seniors have a big impact on this team, and

they contribute a lot.”

The Vikings, however, came back with a goal of their own in the 49th minute by Raniyah Burton. Throughout the second half, a moderate breeze made playing conditions a lot tougher for both teams, but Weber State found a way to win and is one step closer to the Big Sky Championship.

Lily Webster made a shot over the opposing goalkeeper in the 85th minute to give Weber State the victory and an important 3 points to the Big Sky standings.

“Time does fly a lot,” Wildcat senior goal-

keeper Kaytlin Bradley said. “I remember when I was a freshman, and now I am a senior, so this is my last time on this field. So definitely right now, it’s just to embrace the memories and live in the moment right now.”
