By JACEY ROE Reporter

Weber State University’s alumni are leaving an everlasting mark on multiple industries, showcasing the institution’s commitment to cultivate success beyond the classroom. Michelle Knight, a graduate of Weber State’s Master of Business Administration program, emerged as creator of the SafeUT app, founding a startup that has rapidly gained recognition for its groundbreaking work. Her journey from the classrooms of WSU to the cutting-edge of technology exemplifies the uni ersity s role in nurturing an entrepreneurial spirit. “During my tenure at Weber State, I acquired a solid foundation in policy-making, administration, and budgeting, which proved instrumental in my role in developing and disseminating the SafeUT app,”

Knight said. Various programs are available to help distinguish what students are most interested in and help hone the ability to master those skills. These skills help graduates in reaching their career goals. “As part of the Health Administration program, where I served as the Vice President of the Future Health Leaders Association and worked as an Administrative Intern at Genesis Healthcare, I honed crucial skills in budgeting, networking, organization, administration, and data collection. These skills played a pivotal role in the statewide implementation of SafeUT,” Knight said. The success stories of Weber State alumni show the institution’s dedication to providing a well-rounded education that gives graduates the skills and mindset needed to thrive in the working world. As the semester comes to a close and some students move on to graduation, Weber State University’s Alumni Association is ready to welcome new members. The Alumni Association has recently transitioned from an exclusive membership policy based on fees to an inclusive, free model. The decision to transition to this new model was fueled by a desire to foster a broader connection with Weber State Alumni by making the association more accessible. While there are nearly 300,000 living Weber State Alumni, just under 2,000 were paying members of the association. The Weber State Alumni Association web-

site states, “We have made the decision to move to an inclusive non dues-based model in order to expand engagement with all alumni, students, faculty, staff, friends and our community.” The Weber State Alumni Association anticipates continuing to provide their regular events, scholarships and resources without the help of membership fees. Funding will come from donations and company partnerships, like Coca-Cola. One of the ways that the association serves students is through its established scholarship fund, which has been a proud feature of the association since 2010. According to the association’s website, an average of 19 scholarships are awarded by the Weber State Alumni Association every

year. In the 13 years since its establishment, the fund has awarded $424,044 in scholarships. Because the association no longer charges for membership, the primary benefit it provides is license plate frames for graduating students. The association also promotes and hosts various e ents to benefit the community as ell as fostering continued participation from Weber State Alumni. One upcoming event is a dinner and skybox seating for the Bucks v. Utah Jazz NBA basketball game, in which WSU

alumnus Damien Lillard will play against Utah’s own NBA team. This year, the Weber State Alumni Associ-ation is presenting an Alumni Singers con-cert and accepting donations at the event to provide for families in need for the holiday season. Through events, resources and perks, We-ber State University continues to care for its students. Their mission remains the same, even as they change their model. “The Weber State University Alumni Association champions the University by foster-ing spirited and lasting ties among alumni and friends,” their website states.

When it comes to graduation at Weber State University, the Centers for Belonging and Cultural Engagement have different traditions for each graduate who graduates under their cultural centers. One of those traditions is to give their students a stole representing their specific culture hen they experience that moment of walking across the stage during graduation. Students are given the opportunity to receive their stoles during the graduation celebrations held by each cultural center. In the Native American Cultural Center, the graduation celebration is held to recognize each student’s educational milestones and achievements, according to Native American interim program manager Amanda Jones. “The ceremony really serves as a unique space for students to pay homage to their family, to their friends, faculty, staff, administrators and pretty much anybody that really supported their journey through their college education,” Jones said. “Really it is a time to honor, to bless, and to acknowledge our students.” During the Native American Cultural Center’s graduation celebration, the room is usually filled ith traditional songs sung and played on drums, as well as people performing traditional dances. The stoles given to the Native American students are made with their own hands. The tradition of making the stoles themselves started when Jones spoke with Tashina Barber, the former advisor for what was then known as the Center for Multicultural Excellence. Jones and Barber then went to the trading post in Salt a e City to find fabric to ma e the stoles. From there, Jones, and her mom se ed the stoles for the first graduating class of the Native American Cultural Center. Last year, Jones and the Native American Student Association students were able to help sew some of the graduation stoles that will be used in this year’s graduation. The fabric used to create the stoles is meant to connect different tribes and indigenous individuals. There are also hints of purple in the stole to reflect S and an embroidered presidential seal was sewed

onto the stole with permission from Weber State University’s President Brad Mortensen to represent his support when it comes to the students graduating. The Black Cultural Center holds an annual graduation celebration called the African Diaspora Cultural Celebration. The graduation celebration held by the Black Cultural Center is meant to represent the African diaspora, which is a worldwide collection of communities descended from native Africans predominantly in the Americas, according to former Interim Black Cultural Center Program Manager Kenneth Johnson. When it comes to the look of the African Diaspora Cultural Celebration stoles, all of the colors represent something different. ed signifies the blood that unites all frican people, the black stripe is a nod to African diaspora people’s skin and serves to indicate the strength of the community and the green

represents the fertility of the African continent. “The symbolism of green in the pan-African flag relates to the desire to belong to a physical land that is budding with promise and de elopment. t signifies frican diaspora people’s belonging with the history of the African continent,” Johnson said. “What we’re representing with that red, black, and green stripe is the pan- frican flag. hat s what we’re representing in our stole.” hen it comes to the asifi a Cultural Center, a local tattoo artist helped them create a tribal design to incorporate Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia all into their graduation stole. But, last year, the cultural center had a student comment that there wasn’t as much of the Melanesian culture represented in the tribal art. The cultural center worked with the student and they now have a stole full of tribal designs that incorporate all three regions

of the asifi a in their graduation stole. The Pan-Asian stole was created with very simple motifs that ha e the fi e regions of Asia incorporated into the design. The colors were chosen by students, according to Lulu Faumui-Latu-Peters, program manager for the asifi a Cultural Center and interim manager for the Pan-Asian Cultural Center. “The colors came about by just a student selection of colors that they thought would pop with our Asia logo, but also the significance of the red the gold in the sian culture,” Faumui-Latu-Peters said. “There’s huge significance in the sian culture hen it comes to those specific colors and hy e incorporate it in the graduation stole.” According to WSU’s Executive Director for Belonging Brandon Flores, The Hispanic and Latino Cultural Center has a stole celebration called the Celebracion de Mariposas. The Hispanic and Latino Cultural Center was unavailable to provide a comment.

Tim Costello graduating with his associate degree with his wife and two children. By TIM COSTELLO Reporter

How do I describe my time here at Weber State University and especially The Signpost? I am considered a non-traditional student. I started my college career at Weber State in the fall of 2014 when I was 33 years old and newly-married. I am now concluding my time here at almost 40 years old. In the time I’ve been here as an undergrad, I’ve had two children. Now, writing for a newspaper on campus wasn’t exactly what I had in mind. I am an English major, after all, specializing in creative writing, not news writing. I thought maybe my chances were better at Metaphor, not The Signpost. In the spring of 2019, I took a media writing class and a liking to writing in a more journalistic way. Because of the media writing class, I decided to join The Signpost as a reporter for the news desk in the fall of 2019. I had written a couple of news stories, but I found that as a non-traditional student between my jobs as a student, employee off-campus, husband and father, I had a hard time balancing it all at the time. I unfortunately had to resign from The Signpost. I didn’t want to, but The Signpost adviser, Jean Norman, was gracious enough to allow me to step away. My second son was born at this time and I just couldn’t handle being a reporter. I happened to run into Norman at the hospital where my son was born. She reassured me that if I ever wanted to return to The Signpost, the door would always be open. That was something I kept in the back

of my mind. After the pandemic occurred and Weber State opened its campus once again, I knew I wanted to return to The Signpost as a reporter even with all of my other responsibilities. As tough as the pandemic was, it gave me time to refocus and recommit to my goals. When I returned, I decided I would work harder as a reporter than had my first go around. During that time of covering stories, I was able to foster relationships with many on The Signpost, to the point that it qualified me to obtain an editor position on The Signpost. That experience allowed me to look closely at my own writing and how I wrote things. I learned what it takes to be a leader and hat you can do ith that ind of influence in that space. Even though I am an English major, I was able to take what I have learned as a reporter and editor into the other avenues of my career. I recently started a project in which I interviewed local authors. I took what Norman and other staff taught me about interviewing people. It made the process less daunting and intimidating. I am thankful to all the editors, reporters and photographers on The Signpost whose interactions and relationships I will never forget. I am extremely thankful to Jean Norman, who never gave up on me and never stopped believing in her students at The Signpost. I will never forget my time there and will look back on it with fondness.

Something as simple as eating when you are hungry is an afterthought for most, while I have to remind myself to eat despite his protests that “it is okay.” So much of what we do involves food; it is almost impossible to avoid it entirely. Dates, going out with friends, holidays, birthdays and a visit to your parent’s house all involve food, and I never realized it until I tried to make plans not involving food for his sake. Most who undergo a total gastrectomy can eat after a year post-surgery. Due to his many complications, three years post-opt, he is not there yet and may never be. At the beginning of 2023, overwhelmed by the situation, the current state of the world, and exhaustion, I decided to drop out of school. Our health insurance doesn’t cover the costs, and student loans were piling up. To my surprise, an email was waiting for me from the scholarships department. I was awarded the Catapult Scholarship. Despite being a part-time student, the scholarship, according to Weber’s website, is “intended to provide an energetic, upward burst of momentum for students who are nearing graduation but without the means to continue.” Having my last three semesters of school paid for, I continued to push even though I had decided to give up. I am now only a few weeks away from something I didn’t see happening for myself just fi e years ago. Both my parents are now back in my life, and while they would have preferred I graduated before I was 25, they couldn’t be more e cited to see me be the first to graduate in our family, even at 35. I’m grateful to the professors who understood my situation and pushed me to continue. The advisors who refused to let me quit when I was at my lowest point, and my supportive spouse who still works eight-hour days despite the fact it makes him so exhausted that he gets sick every day, just so that I could have something that would make me proud of myself, something to help me believe in myself again. Take advantage of every opportunity, even in the face of adversity, and keep pushing forward when in doubt; it is okay if you don’t meet someone else’s expectations. Sometimes, the right path is taking the long way around rather than the short one. Getting your degree is only part of the journey; the other part is how you do it, the lessons you learn, and the relationships you forge along the way.

Weber State University has set its focus on its Hispanic student body by making plans to become an Emerging Hispanic Serving Institution by 2025. Once that goal has been met, the school will put its focus on becoming an HSI. he federal definition for an S says an eligible institution must have an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25% Hispanic students at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application. Currently S s mplified Strategic lan has stated the school will become an Emerging Hispanic Serving Institution by reaching 15% of undergraduate full-time students who identify as Hispanic by the year 2025.

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and ni ersities states that nonprofit degree-granting institutions with a full-time equivalent undergraduate Hispanic student enrollment of at least 15% count as an eHSI. “In the state of Utah, 15% of Utah’s state population identifies as ispanic and atino. And by Weber State setting the goal of becoming an eHSI by 2025, we are expressing our commitment to mirror the Utah state’s demographic ” udi e is e ecuti e director of Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives, said. According to WSU, 13% of the full-time equivalent undergraduate student body identified as ispanic and atino in the fall 2023 semester. Compared to fall 2022, there was a 0.5% rise in students attending WSU ho identified as ispanic and atino. Some students are concerned the school is focusing too much on getting the numbers

to rise, and not focusing enough on retention rates of Hispanic students. “What really worries me about incoming students is that there doesn’t seem to be a massive focus on retention rather than just recruitment,” Joshua Wooton, Weber State ballet Folklorico president, said. “And it’s kind of falling on the student leaders and the student associations to kind of put that focus on retention for Hispanic students.” In fall 2021, the retention rates for full and part-time ispanic and atino students at WSU was at 64.5%. In fall 2022, the retention rates dropped by 3.4%, according to WSU. The school has started to make plans to address retention rate concerns. One of these plans is a year-long data-driven equity project conducted by Ernesto Hernandez r. Ste art ibrary general education coordinator; Gail Niklason, executive director of

institutional effecti eness and aty aulson director of Data and Analytics. The project focuses on understanding the Hispanic population on campus by looking at their experiences with academic support programs and services on campus. The project looks at how the university can make those services more accessible to help students succeed. As part of this project focus groups of Hispanic and atino students are brought in to help WSU understand how to help future students at WSU. According to Hernandez, there ha e been fi e focus groups held so far. Hernandez says they are currently preparing to analy e their data. ssistant rofessor in Teacher Education, Andrea Garavito Martine and CCE e aluator and community research supervisor, Yesenia Quintana, will be helping with the focus groups and analyzing the data.

WSU will use the data collected to present to stakeholders of academic support programs. “With this [project], we hope these academic support programs find this helpful and useful,” Hernandez said. “It by no means is a criticism. It’s, how can we do better? I mean, if we can all do better, it’s helpful for all of us.” Another plan WSU has in place to reach eHSI standards is partnering with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. The HACU website says they “led the effort to convince Congress to formally recognize campuses with high Hispanic enrollment as federally designated HSIs and to begin targeting federal appropriations to those campuses.” The partnership with HACU helps all students at WSU to receive scholarships, get internships and helps with retention numbers so that it can become an eHSI and an HSI. In October this year, Lewis invited three

students to join her and WSU President Brad Mortensen in Chicago for a HACU conference. The three students were able to learn about creating opportunities and funding that help Hispanic students pursue college and careers. One of the students who attended the HACU conference was Pamela Nunez, president of Weber State’s Latinx Graduation Committee. Nunez found the Latinx Graduation Committee, where she received help with feelings of isolation at WSU. “ inally finding that group as really helpful for me because it’s like, okay, there’s people like me, there’s people that have similar goals, have similar backgrounds,” Nunez said. “University itself is already challenging to keep good grades and then you add on having to work, and then there’s this language barrier and then financial aid and then add if you are undocumented, you also

ha e to find different forms of financial aid.” While at the HACU conference, Nunez learned the percentage of Hispanic and Latino population in Ogden and about how there should be more representation of that number at WSU. According to the United States Census Bureau, in July 2022 30.3% of the Ogden population identified as ispanic or atino. In Weber County, the Hispanic and Latino population was reported to be 19.2%. “ ust in terms of reflection of our surrounding community and who we serve, Weber State can and should be doing better in reaching out to that population,” Hernandez said. When it comes to students like Nunez, WSU’s Executive Director for Belonging, Brandon Flores, says it is important to help students feel like they are home when they enter WSU and that their families feel good

with sending their students to the school. According to Flores, this could help with the retention of Hispanic and Latino students. Another way to help WSU reach its goal of becoming an eHSI and HSI is by having academic support programs work together to make the local Hispanic and Latino population aware of the resources available at WSU and that they can succeed when going to college, according to Flores. “eHSI and HSI work is collaborating and working together,” Lewis said. “The only way that we can reach this goal is by working together and serving students in achieving their goals.” According to Lewis, becoming an HSI is a federal designation. This means WSU, if qualified ill be able to apply for federal grants opening more doors for all WSU students.

As graduation quickly approaches for many Weber State University students the ominous question is left looming in the air: What’s next? For several WSU students, this question already has an answer. Kirk McKinlay, a non-traditional WSU student, made the decision to enroll in higher education after realizing his career in IT left him desiring more human interaction. McKinlay is receiving his degree in radiologic sciences and will be graduating this semester. He felt as though radiology perfectly mixed his background in IT work as well as incorporating his desire for connection with others. Following his graduation, McKinlay plans to begin a doctorate in teaching. As a non-traditional student, he realized that a lot of undergraduate programs are geared toward traditional college-aged students. McKinlay hopes that moving forward he can teach

students in a way that is comprehensive and engaging to individuals of all ages. “I think helping students gain a better grasp of concepts would make them stronger radiologic technologists,” McKinlay said. Tenda Hogue, a WSU senior, is set to receive her Bachelor of Science in criminal justice and t o certificates in the same field this fall. Roughly a month ago, Hogue got a fulltime job at a social or office that co ers child support and family involvement. Following her graduation, she plans to stay with her current place of employment. Hogue would eventually love to be a victim’s advocate coordinator, a dream sparked through an internship that allowed her to shadow someone in a similar role. “I think that being a victim’s coordinator would be a great opportunity because a lot of victims don’t know their rights in the court,” Hogue said. Hogue also aspires to get her master’s in criminal justice or sociology one day. Christopher Blockston, a WSU honor student, is a double major and will receive a

Bachelor of Science in both management information systems and supply chain management. As a non-traditional student, Blockston had the opportunity to or in his fi eld of study and see some of the problems within it.
