- Exclusive Coverage of Leading Companies at PakistanÂ’s First Ever Dedicated Pavilion at Arabplast - CHINAPLAS 2015 Opens Up New Dimensions of Green Packaging - Rehmpack Film to Offer Converters the Springboard Effect: Atif Barry
Editor s Note
The turn of the year marks very good tidings for Pakistan s polymer and packaging industry which continues to exhibit its depth having registered around 30 per cent growth over the last five years. According to State Bank of Pakistan statistics, year to year imports of plastic materials in 2014 have also grown by around 10 percent to touch US $ 1.68 billion. For Polymer & Packaging International, the year end is also a gratifying moment as this edition marks two full years in circulation. With particular reference to Pakistan s plastics industry, despite being plagued by crises including shortage of energy and law and order situation, a recent investment by a local company procuring arguably the country s first blown film extrusion line of German origin speaks volumes about the potential of the marketplace. Not only does it mean that after commencement of operations the converters sector will have access to indigenously produced high quality PE film at cost effective rates, it also signifies that plastic is fast becoming the preferred choice of consumers and replacing other materials, particularly as packaging solutions. Furthermore, a decline in international crude oil prices is also expected to lower the price of petrochemical products which could also bring around a proportionate reduction in the cost of finished goods available to consumers. For Polymer & Packaging International, the last two years have been very rewarding. Not only have we won praise from industries in Pakistan but have also been recognized by international players from the related sectors as Pakistan s flag bearer publication. In addition to this, we have also had the honor of representing Pakistan at leading trade shows worldwide including Germany, China, UAE and Turkey. Looking into the future, not only do we renew our pledge to remain cognizant of our role but will continue to keep our approach multi-pronged as only technology awareness, market exposure and access, and productivity enhancement can be the key to a robust industry in Pakistan. We wish our readers all the best for the festive season and a prosperous 2015. Happy reading!!

Pakistan Holds Huge Potential with Over 180m Consumers: Swiss Envoy Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Switzerland, Roger Kull, has said that Pakistan with a population of more than 180 million consumers holds huge potential but this potential can only be realised in a positive investment climate. Substantial improvements have to be achieved in key areas such as security, good governance and energy supply, he said while speaking at a meeting during his visit to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). Consul General of Switzerland in Karachi, Emil Wyss; President KCCI, Iftikhar Ahmed Vohra; Senior Vice-President KCCI, Mohammad Ibrahim Kasumbi; Vice-President KCCI, Agha Shahab Ahmed Khan; former president KCCI, Abdullah Zaki; Chairman Diplomatic Missions and Embassies Liaison Sub-Committee KCCI, Muhammad Naeem Sharif and KCCI Managing Committee members also attended the meeting. Roger Kull appreciated the tireless efforts being made by the Swiss Consulate in Karachi under the supervision of Consul General Emil Wyss towards strengthening bilateral trade relations between Switzerland and Pakistan. He was of the view that economic ties between Pakistan and Switzerland were built on solid ground as the volume of trade between the two countries had been significant in the recent years. Currently, 24 companies are operating successfully in Pakistan with a substantial stake in the economy of Pakistan. This year, two more Swiss-based multinational companies Mövenpick and Givaudan have entered Pakistan, he added. He also hoped that both countries would succeed in achieving the common goals to further boost trade and investments activities between Pakistan and Switzerland. President KCCI Iftikhar Ahmed Vohra said that Pakistan and Switzerland enjoyed strong economic relations while Switzerland ranked 5th in terms of foreign direct investment in Pakistan. However, he added, the bilateral trade of $ 750 million only between the two countries needed be improved. During financial year 2014, Pakistan exported goods worth almost $ 72 million to Switzerland while imported goods worth almost $ 678 million dollars. Swiss companies are successfully operating in various sectors including energy, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, FMCG, telecommunication, machinery and construction material sectors of Pakistan, he informed.
Made in the GCC label will be the norm, rather than an exception: GPCA The plastics industry in the GCC is evolving into a larger, more diverse and sustainable industry opening up channels for more consumers and new revenues, based on the latest research by the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA). The region s plastic manufacturers have shown a consistent level of growth despite
market fluctuations and increased competition, said Dr. Abdulwahab Al- Sadoun, Secretary General, GPCA. The region s polymer producers and converters have demonstrated a sense of agility, flexibility and stability in the face of regional and global challenges. In 2014, the GCC s plastic capacity reached 25.5 million tons, a 6% increase from the previous year, according to the GPCA. Saudi Arabia leads the region s plastics production market, manufacturing an estimated 18.3 million tons this year, or 72% of the region s plastic resins production capacity. The United Arab Emirates holds the region s second largest plastic production capacity, representing 13% of the region s polymer capacity. The region s plastic industry currently includes the production of 13 products. By the end of the decade, the Gulf s plastic manufacturers will add 16 additional products to their portfolio for applications in the aviation, transport and food packaging sectors. Similarly, the GPCA forecasts that plastic capacity will reach 33.8 million tons by 2020, an estimated 25% increase from current capacity. Over the next five years, the Gulf s plastic producers have the potential to create a distinct identity for themselves, where their products are seen as cost- effective, reliable and high value, continued Dr. Al- Sadoun. By the end of the decade, we foresee a growing influence of this sector globally, when a Made in the GCC label will be the norm, rather than an exception.
BOBST Event Stirs Interest of Participants True to its reputation as an innovator focused on creating value to satisfy the different requirements of converters in a constantly evolving industry, BOBST addressed the latest trends in new barrier technologies and short run gravure printing at a conference and open house held on 28 and 29 October 2014 in S. Giorgio Monferrato, Italy. 150 guests attended the event, held in the historic Castello di Uviglie in the Monferrato hills, and heard about the latest developments from a line-up of speakers including BOBST experts and representatives of leading international companies from throughout the flexible packaging value chain. The speakers addressed the challenges and opportunities that the latest materials, systems and production tools represent to the growth strategies of printing and converting companies. New barrier technologies are developing at a very fast pace and a new generation of clear films and coatings are challenging more traditional barrier packaging structures. As regards the technicalities of manufacturing and the physical properties of these new materials, the presentations from Bobst Manchester and Reifenhäuser were particularly insightful. Dr Carolin Struller from Bobst Manchester, illustrated the company s in-depth research on AlOx clear coating, from the way it is produced and its performance on various filmic substrates, through to its barrier retention with subsequent processes of printing and converting. Bobst Manchester has, and
continues to, carry out extensive trials on the process and is researching ways that in the future could enhance their printability and prevent barrier loss during converting. Kurt Freye and Daniele Cerizzi from Reifenhäuser Kiefel Extrusion and Reifenhäuser Cast Sheet Coating presented the latest developments in blown film and cast extrusion for high barrier applications which reflect the trend for lower pack weights yet with increasing pack performance. This makes 9 to 11 layer films an important trend which has generated several ongoing projects for machines which can produce increasingly sophisticated multi-layer structures using less material. The gravure technology update was rounded up by Giovanni Caprioglio from Bobst Italia, who illustrated the comprehensive range of BOBST gravure presses for flexible materials, focusing on the Minimized Waste concept of the Rotomec MW 60 ? 80 press. Dedicated to very short run printing, the Rotomec MW 80 brings together all the essential requisites for profitable operation, namely minimized waste of material, minimized energy consumption and minimized space requirement.

European Flexible Packaging Volume Expected to Reach 19 Million Tons in 2021 According to the latest reports of Ceresana, the European market for flexible packaging will reach a market volume of about 19.2 million tons in 2021. Bags increasingly replace metal tins and rigid containers. The market research institute Ceresana analyzed the European market for flexible packaging made from plastics, paper and aluminum. The scope of the study include not only consumer good packaging for end customers, but also shrink and stretch films for storage and transport, paper labels, all kinds of carrier bags, sacks for heavy loads, and flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBC). We expect the European market for flexible packaging, i.e all types of packaging and materials taken together, to reach a market volume of about 19.2 million tons in 2021, said Oliver Kutsch, CEO of Ceresana. Lack of time and a desire for convenience and easy and practical use as well as attractive and innovative products are the mainsprings driving the growth of flexible packaging, the study said. Currently, there is especially strong demand for stand-up pouches that is rising. Using composite films allows for a further reduction of weight, thereby saving resources and transport costs. Modern filling techniques in combination with sterilizable bags guarantee
an ever increasing quality of products and rising filling speed. These reasons also make disposable sachets more popular. Small bags are no longer used only for mustard, coffee, ready made sauces and other foodstuffs, but also pharmaceutical drugs, for example. The choice of materials and material layers is determined by the specific properties and demand that a packaging needs to fulfill for a specific good, according to Ceresana. In many segments, flexible packaging made from biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) or polyethylene terephthalate (BOPET) has become much more important in the past. Especially in Western Europe the market for BOPP films performed weakly in recent years. The study predicted that such demand will recover in the future. Thanks to its positive properties, consumption of flexible BOPET packaging will continue its dynamic development, especially across large areas in Eastern Europe. After demand had fallen in 2008 and 2009, consumption of heavy duty and transport packaging is rising again. The market for transport packaging should be able to capitalize on the increasing volume of products traded via the internet, said the study. Ceresana also sees good opportunities for the packaging of pharmaceutical products in upcoming years. Due to a rising average age in many European countries, there is a trend towards ready-dosed single-portion packs for medicaments.
Asia Predicted to be Hub of Bioplastic Production by 2018: Report Bioplastics production to grow by more than 400% by 2018, according to the latest findings presented at the 9th European Bioplastics Conference, which took place from December 2-3 in Brussels, Belgium. The data compiled by European Bioplastics in cooperation with its partners - the IfBB Institute for Bioplastics and Biocomposites (University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hannover, Germany) and the nova-Institute shows that bioplastics production capacity is set to increase from around 1.6 million tons in 2013 to approximately 6.7 million tons by 2018. European Bioplastics, the industry's association, is the organizer of the conference. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a major growth driver in the field of bio-based and biodegradable plastics. Furthermore, renewable and compostable plastics produced locally are likely to benefit from the new EU directive on the reduction of shopping bags, according to the study. Flexible and rigid packaging meanwhile remains by far the leading application field for bioplastics. "Besides, a decisive growth can be observed in textiles and automotive applications. From functional sports garments with enhanced breathability to fuel lines - bioplastics are constantly spreading into new markets," stated François de Bie, Chairman of European Bioplastics. From a regional perspective, the study believed Asia will expand its role as major production hub, with about 75% of bioplastics will be produced in the region by 2018. Most of the currently planned projects are being
implemented in Thailand, India and China.
with high quality recycled plastics."
In comparison, Europe, at the forefront of research and development though, will be left with only roughly 8% of the production capacities.
The data also revealed that the collection of polypropylene (PP) bottles increased by almost 32% to touch 62 million pounds. There was a rise of 35% in the domestic processing of postconsumer PP bottles.
"We urge the EU legislators to consider and make efficient use of the immense environmental, economic growth and job creation potential of our industry. In this context, the Circular Economy Package should remain in the European Commission's 2015 Work Program and the Waste Target Review should proceed as planned," concluded Mr de Bie.
US records 4.3% increase in plastic bottle recycling: ACC Plastic bottle recycling in the US has grown by 120 million pounds in 2013, an increase of 4.3%, according to data released by the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers (APR) and the American Chemistry Council (ACC). There was an increase of 0.4% in the recycling rate which went to 30.9% for the year. The report also noted that there had been an increase in the pounds of plastic bottles returned for recycling for the 24th consecutive year. The collection of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles which includes milk jugs and bottles for household cleaners and detergents, rose to 1.05 billion pounds in 2013 which was an increase over the 26 million pounds in 2012. However, the recycling rate for HDPE bottles remained the same at 31.6%. There has also been an increase in domestic processing of post-consumer plastic bottles. The exports of post-consumer plastic bottle bales is at a five year low at 20.4%. Exports of HDPE have also seen a drop of 19% to 163 million pounds in 2013. Around 74 million pounds of HDPE was imported by US reclaimers which was an increase from the 33 million pounds in 2012. Speaking about the trend, APR executive director Steve Alexander said: . "America's plastics recycling industry is growing, vibrant and poised to help brand owners, retailers, and packagers meet their sustainability goals
PP bottles deliberately recycled as PP (instead of blended with HDPE) rose from 34.5 million pounds in 2012 to 44.2 million pounds in 2013. The survey also highlighted trends like the growth in single-stream collection of household recyclables which resulted in higher participation rates but also increased contamination and the increase in the use of plastic bottles in packaging applications. It also stated that reclaimers are capturing greater value through enhanced sorting operations and that there is a lack of access to away-from-home recycling which acts as a barrier to increased collection.

Fakuma 2014 Ends with Record Breaking Numbers Shapes, functions, colours, Fakuma with exactly 45,689 expert visitors from 117 countries and 1772 exhibitors from 36 nations, the Fakuma international trade fair for plastics processing has definitely found its way into the history books for technical industry events at the international level. Due to record numbers experienced in recent years thought to have reached their peak, the 23rd Fakuma evolved into an absolute winner in the field of plastics technology and attracted more expert visitors than ever before. Reaching levels that had certainly not been anticipated by anyone, although perhaps hoped for secretly, and in the end impressively confirmed, 33% of the officially counted 45,689 expert visitors came from foreign countries near and far, so that Fakuma has once again expressed its exceptional positioning and has even been able to top last year s figure of 31% foreign visitors.
And thus it is quite befitting that the spokesperson of Fakuma s exhibitor advisory committee, Ulrich Eberhardt, was able to report strong figures for the industry sector on the one hand, as well as continuing satisfactory business developments on the other hand, and otherwise excellent acceptance of Fakuma as a globally recognised business platform for all of the players involved in the plastics industry. Beyond this, he provided a brief insight into the secret behind Fakuma s success, which he accentuated as a marketplace for innovative solutions covering all aspects of injection moulding, thermoforming and extrusion, as a trend barometer for the industry and as a lastingly important trade fair for suppliers and users of plastics technologies. At the same time, event promoter Paul E. Schall has succeeded in retaining Fakuma s distinctive character,
charm and charisma, as well as its very personal and relaxed atmosphere, despites its outstanding, globally significant market positioning , explained Ulrich Eberhardt. In reviewing Fakuma s development in recent years it becomes apparent that, with the exception of the decline in 2009 due to the recession, exhibitor numbers, exhibition floor space, visitor numbers and foreign participation have demonstrated continuous growth. Available exhibition floor space at the highly modern Friedrichshafen Exhibition Centre has been fully booked out at Fakuma for years, and even reserve floor space in the foyers at the east and west entrances was occupied in 2014 in order to provide a few aspiring exhibitors who had been placed on the waiting list with the opportunity of presenting their technologies, processes, products and services.

Assocomaplast Report Exports-Imports Growth in First Three-Quarters of 2014 Assocomaplast, the Italian Plastics and Rubber Processing Machinery and Molds Manufacturers' Association, reported growth in both export and import during the first three quarters of 2014. From January to September, Italy's plastics and rubber machinery export rose by over 4% while purchasing from abroad grew by 7%. However, the association pointed out that the market has lost some of its momentum in recent months. On the other hand, in spite of 12 | Polymer & Packaging
the sustained increase in imports evidenced in the statistics, businesses in the sector do not seem to feel confidence in the recovery of the domestic market. Hence, Assocomaplast predicts a year-end balance substantially in line with that of 2013. From a regional perspective, exports to Europe in the first three quarters rose 4.5%. Of Italy's total 1.13 billion exports of plastics and rubber machinery, the EU markets accounted for 80%, with average growth greater than that in the rest of Europe. Outside of EU, the political instability between Russia and Ukraine has caused orders to fall by as many as 20%. The Americas have shown a positive trend, said Assocomaplast, driven by the active US and Mexico market. Sales to Central and South America have stalled, with the decrease of 22% in sales to Brazil a particular concern. The most sustained progress was witnessed in exports to Asian markets, which increased by 7.4%. China, unsurprisingly, is a leading figure, while Indonesia has also performed well. Yet, sales to Japan were nearly cut in half. Exports of plastics and rubber processing machinery to Africa and Oceania have also fallen off, added Assocomaplast.

High Performance Meets Energy Efficiency Long term success and competitiveness are increasingly linked to efficiency. Especially energy efficiency has become significantly more important. As injection moulding machine manufacturer and system supplier ENGEL AUSTRIA bears great responsibility. The goal is to develop solutions which fully meet technological demands while being economically efficient and sustainable at the same time. Energy efficiency is nothing new for ENGEL. As early as 1989 the machine manufacturer from Schwertberg developed an energy saving concept for hydraulic injection moulding machines, which was based on avoiding energy losses. However, back then this concept attracted the attention of only a few customers. Only after energy prices started to shoot up and the tendency to favour sustainable solutions developed over the past few years, energy efficiency has become a main concern for plastics manufacturers. Avoiding energy loss In 2008, ENGEL finally hit home with the servohydraulic ecodrive. Depending on the machine type and the application, the energy saving option reduces the energy consumption of hydraulic injection moulding machines by 3070 percent. ecodrive represents the state of the art of energy optimised servo-hydraulic drive technology, but its basic principle is not too different from the solution developed back in 1989: The drive speed results from the currently required speed of the injection moulding machine axles. When a machine is idle during a cooling phase for example the drive is not running either and therefore does
not consume energy. Energy losses are reduced to such an extent, particularly speaking of small machines, that the hydraulic oil is heated only minimally. The temperature of hydraulic oil indicates how energy efficient the injection moulding machine is. Thanks to ecodrive, ENGEL succeeded in making also hydraulic injection moulding machines fit for future requirements. If the moulds need hydraulics anyway for example to operate core pulls the overall energy balance of a hydraulic machine with ecodrive can be even better than compared to an all electric machine with hydraulic auxiliary unit. What counts is overall efficiency. In order to develop the perfect system solution for a particular situation, ENGEL has a vast range of hydraulic, all electric, and hybrid machines ready.
energy to complete this application than the previously used hydraulic injection moulding machines. Apart from the drive technology, which is exactly adjusted to every application, numerous other factors contribute to energy efficiency in injection moulding. Among them are e.g. the insulation of the barrel, the efficient design of machine components, and the choice of clamping force. The smaller the machine, the lower its energy consumption. Thanks to the tie-bar-less technology, ENGEL enables the use of large and bulky moulds on relatively small injection moulding machines, which leads to a constructive use of energy saving potential.
Energy Efficiency and Top Performance All Rolled into One ENGEL is in the vanguard also when it comes to all electric injection moulding machines. With the launch of the ENGEL e-motion in 2002, ENGEL became one of the first European suppliers to introduce an all electric machine series on the market, which is to this day constantly refined and optimised to meet the specific requirements of certain branches. As a result, the ENGEL e-cap machine series has evolved for fast running applications in the packaging industry. It combines optimum energy efficiency with maximum performance. For example, the ENGEL e-cap manufactures in its 420-tonne version more than 130,000 caps for beverage bottles per hour using a 96cavity mould. However, it uses 55 percent less
ecodrive inside: more than 60 percent of all hydraulic injection moulding machine delivered by ENGEL worldwide are equipped with ecodrive. The share of ENGEL victory machines equipped with ecodrive even amounts to 70 percent. The all-electric machine series ENGEL e-cap for the production of beverage caps combines optimum energy efficiency with maximum performance.

Commercial Supplies of PE Film will Offer Converters the Springboard Effect: Atif Barry by Ahmed Qaiser
Leading packaging solution providers Rehmpack Pvt. Ltd. have been active in the Pakistani market for over 45 years. While their core business has mainly been folding cartons and producing flexographic pressure-sensitive labels, the next generation of family entrepreneurs are now steering the company to set new records, this time as commercial suppliers of locally produced hi quality PE film. Having recently procured a top of the line blown film extrusion line from Germany, the director of Rehmpack Mr. Atif Anis Barry believes that this move will now make his company PakistanÂ’s first to commercially produce PE film on German production lines for supply to local converters. According to him, not only will this acquisition set them apart from competitors who are manufacturing film using mostly Chinese or Taiwanese technology, it is also expected to trigger product development initiatives in local converters who in the past did not have access to locally produced high-grade PE film. Mr. Atif Anis Barry recently was kind enough to grant Polymer & Packaging International time to discuss the upcoming prospects. Q. How do you think Rehmpack and the industry will benefit from the acquisition of a modern extrusion line of German origin? A. At present, there is no commercial PE film line offering high quality products to the industry. Due to this predicament, most converters have serious issues related to quality. The acquisition of a state of the art film line from world leaders Windmoller & Hollscher will allow Rehmpack to produce high quality PE film that we will supply to local converters who currently do not have
many options available to them. As supply creates its own demand, the local industry will in turn be able to avail product development due to the availability of locally manufactured high quality PE film. Q. Do you expect your acquisition of cutting edge technology will impact the volume of imported PE films in Pakistan? A. Theoretically speaking, the local industry should not need to import film if the quality that they demand is available indigenously and at a cheaper price. As such, Rehmpack will now supply high quality film to local converters at very competitive price as opposed to imported film. Not only do we intend to provide our customers a unique opportunity of reducing production costs but also helping them save the delivery time in stocking essential inputs. Q. In light of the investment made by your company, what is your outlook for the future?
it will also provide them an opportunity to reap the benefits of greater product development options which in turn will provide end users with better quality products. Moreover, better quality of PE film will also lower the percentage of wastage and rejection at the convertersÂ’ end as well as at the packaging lines of end users. Q. Considering you are among the first in Pakistan to procure cutting edge technology that evidently requires a highly trained work force to operate, how do you propose to address this concern? A. In terms of technical support, not only will we have specialists from Windmoller & Hollscher by our side but they will also help us in training our staff to operate the line. Furthermore, we are also in the process of hiring skilled technical employees and intend to arrange in-house technical training programs that will give them the expertise to manage the most modern production facilities in the country.
A. The overall local market and particularly the flexible packaging sector have been growing very rapidly. Although we do not expect Rehmpack to capture a major market share from the get go, we do aim to change the quality dynamics of the local marketplace as we will be offering indigenously manufactured high quality film that in the past had to be imported. As such, not only do we expect our PE film to offer local converters the springboard affect

CHINAPLAS 2015 Opens Up a New Dimension of Green Packaging Plastic packaging, heralded as green, ecofriendly and low-carbon, has been growing rapidly in recent years in the midst of growing concerns of food safety and environmental issues. Intelligent, multi-functional, lightweight and eco-friendly packaging remains the main stay of packaging trends. Plastics are widely applied in packaging, occupying over 30% of market share in the packaging industry. As the rising star of the industry, plastics is playing an indispensable role in a number of fields such as food and beverages, daily commodities, medical and pharmacy as well as industrial and agricultural manufacturing. In China despite being the world's largest producer and consumer of agricultural products, 30% of them have been wasted during storage, transportation and retailing, partly due to poor packaging. Certain new packaging technologies that greatly improve food safety and extend shelf life such as active packaging, films of high gas barrier, heat resistant, cold tolerant, heat shrinkable, oven proof and antimicrobial properties are highly sought after and in great prospect in China market. For beverage market, PET bottles predominate carbonated drinks sector at 57.4%. As China's tea market is booming, heat resistant PET bottles are among the fastest growing ones with annual growth rate of over 50% among polyester type bottles. It is estimated that the need for shrinkable film will reach a 20% point of growth rate in the following five years, particularly in the application of PET shrinkable film on PET beer bottles. With the increased disposable income, consumers are more willing to spend more on high end household chemical products and set a higher bar for their appearances. Thus, novel and aesthetic packaging are highly sought after. New sealing methods also improve consumers' experience, for example, plastic zippers and 24 | Polymer & Packaging
screw cap pouch allow users to open the packet without needing to tear off the bag. The rise of China's medicine industry spurs a high demand of medicine packaging.
