Retrospectively Long after the Demise of dinosaurs We have swung Several ways From motes of gnats To primitive Four foot cousins Hiding out from Hungry big cats And slowly morphing Into five foot Plus range Now the game Had changed Excluding giraffes And elephants That we still Looked up to We easily Sizematched All the other Four footed denizens Our verticality
Was fait accompli Satisfied with Tall We began to build Inanimate Surrogate Talls Much larger than us Ziggurats Pyramids And the like Oblivious that These mimicries Brick on brick Stone on stone Became objects To revere and Often to deify A new consequence Was set in place To further bewilder And bedevil us Skyscrapers Moon Rockets And the like
The outer shells We understood But the innards were Too hard to plumb Residing within We became Minute cogs (A la Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times) Wrapped around Geared wheels Trying mightily to Slip thru those gears Each day Oddly or prophetic Those wheels are Propelling us To a new version Of dwarfness Tinytinytinies Are now In the offing Ascending new Kids on the block (aptly named) Nanobrats!
Going about their business Within or without Our knowledge Or consent Secretly monitoring And modifying How we function Invictus! Where have you gone? Are we captainless? Masterless of our Own existence? If this be Why be Tall at all?
