Who we are The Social Investment Business is one of the leading social investors in the UK and has been a pioneer in the industry. We have disbursed £380m in loans and grants to over 1,100 charities and social enterprises since 2002. The UK social investment market is leading the way in providing new solutions to financing innovative ways to improve the lives of those living around them. The UK social investment industry will be worth up to £1bn in 2016 according to Boston Consulting Group (The First Billion, Big Society Capital 2012). We specialise in developing fund models designed specifically to develop an ‘investment ready’ pipeline of charities and social enterprises, helping create new impact investment funds and bringing in investors new to this market. 1. Scoping: Evaluating the opportunity to use new models to create impact around the world • Understand the existing ecosystem in a country / region for social enterprise • Evaluate the “enabling environment” in order to understand the stage and development of the investor marketplace • Outline a ‘straw man’ structure for a localised investment readiness programme • Identify key local or international impact investment fund partners for fund management
2. Set-up: Launching and establishing a new investment readiness programme or impact investment fund structure • Partner on raising the finance to back the fund • Structure fund model and operating costs • Establish the ‘rules of engagement’ and governance structures • Create application forms, processes, guidance documents, FAQs, management policies etc. from template documents • Launch, publicity and outreach • Roll out pilot phase
3. Support: Stakeholder management and global thought leadership creating social impact • Support Fund Manager -- Running investment committee(s) / panel(s) to assess deals -- Dissemination of minutes and key information -- Funder(s) and stakeholder engagement -- Appropriate data capture and analysis, and monitoring and evaluation • Thought leadership -- Share lessons SIB continues to learn through work -- Gather global lessons for thought leadership on how to most effectively enable impact

Local Impact Fund Liverpool In January 2014, we launched the UK’s first Local Impact Fund in Liverpool, piloting an innovative financial product which has the potential to channel millions to charities and social enterprises that meet local needs throughout England. The £2 million Liverpool City Region Impact Fund will offer business support and simple finance to local charities and social enterprises. The Fund offers unsecured loans of up to £250,000, to help organisations grow and scale the impact they make in their communities. The Fund is financed by £1 million from the SIB Foundation, and £1 million from the European Regional Development Fund’s 2007-13 programme; one of the first examples of leveraging EU money for an impact investment fund for charities and social enterprises.
Third Sector Loan Fund Our partner Social and Sustainable Capital launched this innovative £30 million fund in 2014. It is pioneering a model designed to encourage banks and other mainstream institutions to invest in funds which finance charities and social enterprises. Santander has committed £13.5 million along with £15 million from Big Society Capital, and a £1.5 million repayable grant from us. It is the UK’s largest social investment fund investing in a wide range of charities and social enterprises across all social sectors, and will make loans of £250,000 to £3 million, both secured and unsecured. We and SASC now plan to develop similar funds, working with philanthropic funders such as trusts and foundations, corporate CSR programmes, and wealthy individuals, who are interested in using their money as ‘catalytic capital’ to stimulate multiples of investment for the causes they care about. Social and Sustainable Capital LLP is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA number 588445).
“Investment into social enterprises can play an important role in our long-term economic plan as well as in addressing the toughest social issues. I congratulate Santander, Big Society Capital and the Social Investment Business in developing the Third Sector Loan Fund, managed by Social and Sustainable Capital, and would hope to see other High Street banks following their lead.” 16 The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Nov. 2014

“The social investment market is young but developing quickly in the UK. We are learning everyday what works and what doesn’t for the charity and social enterprise sector but our focus always remains on what investment solutions are relevant to front line organisations. As part of a vibrant, growing, global social economy, we want to share our learning to help shape and establish global best practice.” Jonathan Jenkins, CEO, Social Investment Business
