Alitex are delighted to join the SGD in sponsoring their Lifetime Achievement Award again at this year’s ceremony.
In September of last year, the beautiful Shackleton Garden, Ireland opened where two of Alitex’s large Thomas Messenger greenhouses live within the grounds. Back in 2017, Fingal County Council acquired Shackleton Garden and began working on its restoration. Their goal was to open the garden up to the public as an important local amenity and tourism asset in the Dublin 15 Asarea.part

This design steered Fingal County Council to choose them for the restoration at Shackleton Garden. The new glasshouses are nestled within the walled garden, one is a monopitch designed to house vines. The other, a three-quarter span structure with a hipped roof, designed to be a ‘Hot House’ to bring on tropical plants and other temperate varieties.

believed that the key to creating a healthier planet is education. We hope that sharing Beth and Andrew’s practical experience and research can enhance the biodiversity and carbon sequestration of other complex area’s – brownfield sites, public parks, highway verges and so on. We are collaborating on this with local councils, universities and developers, as well as offering advice to other community space horticultural teams.
The first phase of ‘Chattowood’ was planted in early April into locally extracted sand. With barely enough time to establish before the recent hot, dry spell, the plants have survived remarkably well. Both developer, and importantly the new homeowners are happy with the result and a recent survey of the site, carried out by our wildlife expert Dr Chris Gibson, showed a very healthy local insect population.

To honour Beth, they requested to use the name Chatto in the scheme. In return, we asked if we could design the planting in Beth’s naturalistic style to encourage biodiversity.

three unique garden spaces, the Garden of Elements - designed by Andy Sturgeon and brought to life by sixtimes BALI Grand award-winners, Willerby Landscapes – is where Boughton’s IN1 Intensive and Lightweight Green Roof Substrates, and Rootzone came into their own.
2022 has been a year that has seen Boughton and its leading ‘as dug’ topsoil solutions alongside subsoils, green roof substrates, sands, Rootzone, turf dressing and tree soils, find their home within some of the country’s most iconic redevelopment schemes, most notably the redevelopment of the Battersea Power Station. Situated on a 39-acre site, the £9billion redevelopment of the Grade II* listed Battersea Power Station has been further enhanced by the introduction of several stunning garden and green roof spaces.
Featuring a series of connected green promenades, filled with colourful, textural and scented plants, these spaces are designed to be enjoyed all year round, including an abundant herb garden offering the opportunity to nurture fresh produce.
One such space is the ‘Garden of the Elements, located between the four highly recognisable chimneys
Adding another London landmark to its portfolio, Boughton also proudly provided material to the development for the Fulham riverside. Working with the team at Riverside and, once again, RHS Chelsea Flower Show award-winning garden designer, Andy Sturgeon, Boughton has helped to bring to life the scheme’s landscaped areas.

TOPSOIL Manager Andy Spetch explains why he believes so strongly in educating new designers entering the landscape industry about the importance of using quality topsoil in their schemes :
Herelevance.”continued:
As the UK’s largest supplier of quality topsoil to the landscaping, sports and amenity markets, TOPSOIL – a division of British Sugar plc – has been a strong supporter of the SGD and its Awards Scheme. The company first sponsored the SGD Student Design Award in 2015 and has continued to do so in the years
So, working with soil scientist Tim O’Hare, I introduced stringent, industry-leading independent testing and analysis protocols, and made the results freely available. A wide range of test parameters provided proof that British Sugar TOPSOIL products are safe, free from physical and chemical contaminants, consistent, and contain the correct balance of nutrients for healthy plant growth. The testing has expanded considerably over the years and still leads the industry in its breadth and market
“Good landscaping projects start with the soil. It’s a living, breathing material that can either be the foundation for healthy plant establishment and growth, or the nemesis for a beautifully designed planting scheme.
Nationalsince.
“When I first set up British Sugar’s topsoil division some 25 years ago, I was determined that the rich arable soils washed from the sugar beet brought into our factories would be repurposed and enhanced to create quality topsoil for the landscaping market.
It was vital, of course, that customers could be one hundred percent confident in specifying and using our products.
TOPSOIL also donates product for industry charities and recently provided sufficient topsoil to fill the extensive raised planters at DNRC Stanford Hall in Leicestershire for the charity HighGround, which helps service leavers and veterans to find career and vocational opportunities in the landbased sector.

British Sugar TOPSOIL products are used widely by professionals. Its HortLoam planting soil was used to establish the planting beds in the RHS Garden Hyde Hall’s Global Vegetable Garden, and its Landscape20 general purpose topsoil was the topsoil of choice for designer Richard Miers’ 2022 Chelsea show garden for Perennial.
“I believe strongly that designers and landscape contractors need to know and understand the topsoil they’re working with - where it has come from, how it has been stored and protected from the elements, what it contains, and whether it is right for a particular project.”

But nobody offers the whole range of hard landscaping materials that we offer our clients.
Back then there was no company like CED in the UK. Nobody else supplied unusual or special stone materials as we did. Quite simply, CED led the way. In some respects, other companies in the market have copied us here and there.
Spanning three generations of one family, CED Stone Group is a family business with a unique heritage! Although our involvement with natural stone dates back to the middle of the 19th Century when the company supplied raw flint from France to the ceramics industry, it was in 1978 that our Chairman, Michael Heap, decided to supply specialist natural stone aggregates.

Denmans embodies both John Brookes’ Modernist design philosophy and Mrs. Robinson’s diverse horticultural legacy: It is design and plantsmanship at their unified best and has all the hallmarks of a John Brookes design: Proportion, connection to its landscape, connection to its heritage (Mrs. Robinson’s legacy), strong geometry, and flow.
Over the years, he retained the garden’s key features, while reworking its lines, and adding plantings, sculpture, ponds, semitropical plants, and his iconic blue benches. Renowned for its curvilinear layout and complex plantings, one working off the other in 3 dimensions, the purpose of the garden and its layout blend with its plantings in a single harmonious “whole”. Its strong structure and elements serve to relate house to garden, purpose to garden, style to garden — then is overlaid with exuberant and strong plantings, a combination of exotics and natives. The 4-acre garden, stunning in spring and summer, is equally as stunning in autumn and winter. Its meandering layout makes it seem larger than it is.

From courtyards to country estates, a single tree to an entire avenue, we supply and guarantee trees from four metres tall. Our teams work with a range of equipment from power barrows which fit through your door to cranes that can lift trees over large distances, allowing us to plant any tree in almost any location.
We are proud that our clients are happy to recommend us and keep using our services. We believe that a tree is only as good as the way it is handled, planted and maintained. Ground preparation and aftercare are as crucial to the successful establishment of the tree as selecting the tree itself.

Large deciduous trees are sold according to their girth size ie: the circumference of the stem measure one metre above ground level. Evergreen trees, or those which have branches below one metre, are sold according to height. There are some exceptions of course, but there is a general correlation between a tree’s girth and height.
We use industry leading techniques to successfully relocate trees under a variety of circumstances. Subject to local authority approval, even trees covered by TPO’s (Tree Preservation Order) can be relocated.
We strongly recommend you select your trees in person, which is why we build close professional relationships to ensure we understand and meet the needs of our individual clients. Our consultants can accompany you on a nursery visit to advise, both technically and aesthetically, on the most appropriate trees.

Pots and Pithoi are really proud to be sponsors of the Student Design in Urban Sustainability Award.
Our hand thrown terracotta pots are produced using a blend of local Cretan clay and are still fired in kilns using crushed olive stones and grape seed – a by-product of the local olive oil and wine producers. This makes our pots a great example of how ancient traditional methods can be an example to designers to think of sustainable materials in the way they design the gardens of the future.

Based in West Sussex, Pots and Pithoi have been importing Cretan terracotta since 1985. With over 120 designs in 240 sizes we are the leading suppliers of Terracotta in the UK. Along with traditional designs we have been introducing more contemporary designs and finishes to our Therange.newly added charred pots use manganese as a finished surface.
Beautifully designed and built by our sister company, The Outdoor Room, we exhibit regularly at RHS Shows and have been awarded 5 stars for our Chelsea Trade Stands in 2021 and 2022. We always try to demonstrate how pots, pithoi and water features can be used to compliment a garden, or be a standalone statement piece.
This demonstrates fine examples of innovation meeting tradition. Our continuing close relationship with the potters ensures the traditional and ancient methods are maintained. Being hand thrown on the wheel and being fired up to 1150 Degrees Celsius gives each pot it's unique character and colouration.
