Back in 2017, Fingal County Council acquired Shackleton Garden and began working on its restoration. Their goal was to open the garden up to the public as an important local amenity and tourism asset in the Dublin 15 Asarea.part

This design steered Fingal County Council to choose them for the restoration at Shackleton Garden. The new glasshouses are nestled within the walled garden, one is a monopitch designed to house vines. The other, a three-quarter span structure with a hipped roof, designed to be a ‘Hot House’ to bring on tropical plants and other temperate varieties.

We hope that sharing Beth and Andrew’s practical experience and research can enhance the biodiversity and carbon sequestration of other complex area’s – brownfield sites, public parks, highway verges and so on. We are collaborating on this with local councils, universities and developers, as well as offering advice to other community space horticultural teams.

The first phase of ‘Chattowood’ was planted in early April into locally extracted sand. With barely enough time to establish before the recent hot, dry spell, the plants have survived remarkably well. Both developer, and importantly the new homeowners are happy with the result and a recent survey of the site, carried out by our wildlife expert Dr Chris Gibson, showed a very healthy local insect population.

We have recently collaborated with a neighbouring housing development called ‘Lanswood’ which gained planning permission for 80 new homes. To honour Beth, they requested to use the name Chatto in the scheme. In return, we asked if we could design the planting in Beth’s naturalistic style to encourage biodiversity.

To carry forward her ecological approach and passion for plants, Beth set up the Education Trust in 2015. The aim of the Trust is to inspire, educate, and to promote enjoyment and wellbeing for all through gardens and the outdoor environment. Nearly lost due to a long-running and bitter business dispute that was resolved at the end of 2017 just before John died, Denmans has been under extensive restoration. Registered a Grade II Garden in 2020, it is an RHS Partner Garden, included in the NGS Partner Garden Scheme, and won gold in 2021 South and South East in Bloom Competition.

This year, we were delighted to supply La Roche Luna natural stone paving, pool copings and steps to a large garden project in Guildford, designed by the renowned Adolfo Harrison, in the Surrey hills. Our bespoke stone workshop allowed us to create detailed edging on made to measure paving and pool copings to be incorporated into this stunning design, as well as unique step treads to facilitate a show-stopping set of curved steps.
