Welcome!
Each day brings a few more minutes of daylight—a few more minutes to read by the light of the sun! Be sure to check out all of the book clubs available to you through the library (see page 6), as well as resources and book clubs kits for any book club to check out (dpl.pub/bookclubs). With more than 200 titles to select from, each book club kit includes up to 12 copies of a book that your club can check out for up to two months. And if you’re looking to make reading even more fun, take on our Winter Reading Challenge; see page 6 for more information.
Latest on Library Updates
The construction of a new Redmond Library and work on the remodeling of the La Pine and Sisters Libraries is now underway. See pages 10 and 11 for more information about these projects and temporary library locations. When exploring all of the great events you’ll find in this guide, be sure to note the addresses of programs for these libraries in particular, as many will be held at community partner locations. Our thanks to the businesses and organizations who are sharing their spaces with us!
Using This Guide
You’ll find full descriptions and more information for all programs on our web calendar at dpl.pub/ calendar. The web calendar is also your go-to place for any programs that require registration. All library programs are free of charge. Because things sometimes change, be sure to check the web calendar before attending any inperson events.

BILL O’DELL SMITH
As if it were just yesterday, Bill recounts his first visit to Deschutes Public Libraryin 1983. “It was the first thing I did when I moved to Bend. The old library was quaint, but the Downtown branch feels more like a library,” says Bill. A Los Angeles native, Bill is accustomed to big-city life and a robust library system featuring live music, public computers, and—of course—many books. He quickly
DIANA HERNÁNDEZ
Community Librarian, Latino Community
Time flies when you’re having fun, and in just four months Diana’s brought a lot of fun to the library! Community Librarian Diana Hernández brings her dual immersion teaching experience paired with a love of books to help build relationships within Deschutes County’s Latino community. “Growing up in Texas, my childhood was filled with books and story times in Spanish. Our neighborhood library was a safe and welcoming place for my family,” says Diana. Her upbringing embraced a reciprocal relationship between Latinos and the library, and she’s eager for the opportunity to work with the Latino community, helping facilitate access to knowledge and resources. Diana shares, “Reading and books have been a consistent and reliable companion throughout my life and I want to share that with my community.” She enjoys reading sci-fi and fantasy and creating playlists based on these books. “I’m currently prioritizing reading books written by women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ authors. Through reading diverse perspectives, I’m learning to be a better human being—one book at a time.” Welcome, Diana!
discovered his new library has all the modern offerings often found in large cities. “I’m a big reader; I enjoy science fiction, graphic novels, and comics,” says Bill. Checking all the boxes is his favorite author Neil Gaiman. In the warmer months, Bill works long days landscaping, but in the off-season he visits the library nearly every day. “If it weren’t for the library, I wouldn’t have the means to read. It’s a good place to relax and think for a while.”
PERFIL DEL PERSONAL DIANA HERNÁNDEZ
Bibliotecaria Comunitaria, Comunidad Latina
¡Bienvenida, Diana!

County voters supported the Library’s bond measure to expand and improve libraries across the county. The work is now underway, starting in the first half of 2023 with remodels of the La Pine and Sisters Libraries and the start of construction of a new Redmond Library that will double the square footage of the previous space.

REDMOND LIBRARY A NEW LIBRARY FOR A GROWING CITY
Like much of Central Oregon, Redmond has grown by leaps and bounds in the past 20 years. The all-new Redmond Library will continue to serve as a dynamic community hub—and it will double the size of the previous library. The new 40,000-square-foot library will replace the existing library and remain between Cascade and Deschutes Avenues. Once complete, the new library will include:
• Large and divisible meeting spaces for community use
• Collaborative and co-working areas
• DIY spaces for creative, hands-on activities and programs
• An engaging children’s discovery space for learning and play
• A dedicated space for teens
• A covered civic patio for gathering, as well as programs and events
Construction is scheduled for completion in late in fall 2024. In the meantime, a temporary Redmond Library is open and operating at . This space offers select books and DVDs from the library’s collection, as well as a space for customers to pick up holds. Public computers as well as a meeting rooms are also available.
PRO TIP

LA PINE AND SISTERS LIBRARIES REMODELS ARE UNDERWAY!
The La Pine and Sisters Libraries share a floorplan—mirror images of each other—so they are the first to undergo remodeling and updating. The renovation of these libraries will create bright and open spaces that welcome the community with more flexible meeting and tutoring rooms, an enhanced children’s discovery space, a cozy fireplace and reading area, and a large community gathering space.
The Sisters Library is now operating out of a . This enables customers to pick-up holds, browse a limited selection of popular titles for all ages, and use public computers.
While we work to complete a temporary space for the La Pine Library (scheduled to open in late February), the next closest library in Sunriver is just 15 miles north (56855 Venture Lane, Sunriver), and digital access to library resources is available 24/7 through the website (deschuteslibrary.org). Visit for updates on a temporary location.
Both the La Pine and Sisters Libraries are slated to re-open to the public in Fall 2023.

A Novel Idea 2023
The A Novel Idea selection for 2023 is...
FOUR BOOKS by FOUR AUTHORS! We’re going big for the 20th year of this beloved community read program. All four authors have visited us in the past as part of A Novel Idea, and in 2023 they’re all coming back to celebrate this milestone with us. The four selections for 2023 are The Brothers K, by David James Duncan; L.A. Weather, by María Amparo Escandón; The Guide, by Peter Heller; and Listening Still, by Anne Griffin. Programming begins in April, and all four authors visit us for a free presentation on April 29.

Wayfinder Is On Its Way
While some libraries transition to temporary spaces, all libraries are transitioning to Wayfinder, a new way to explore your library’s collection. Wayfinder groups books into broad categories (such as Cooking) and further sorts those categories into subcategories (such as Vegetarian). The intent is to make it easier and more pleasurable to browse, while also giving you a simple way to locate exact titles if you’re looking for something specific.
We are in the process of relabeling, so you may see work underway when you visit your library. The full transition to Wayfinder is scheduled to be complete in late spring.
