Welcome!

Cozy season is upon us! We’re ready to curl up with good books and movies (dpl.pub/catalog) and try new things (dpl.pub/ libraryofthings) as we settle in to autumn in Central Oregon. It’s also a great time to get crafty with Creativebug (dpl.pub/ creativebug). One of our favorite fall traditions returns in October: the annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest. We can’t wait to see this year’s fantastic creations; see page 3 for more information.

Fall Brings Library Re-openings

Remodeling work is nearcomplete at the La Pine and Sisters Libraries, and we are so excited to share these new spaces with you! Join us for the Grand Opening celebrations: October 14, noon–2:00 p.m. at the La Pine Library, and October 28, noon–2:00 p.m. at the Sisters Library. Audiophiles and history buffs rejoice! Elise brings her bright spark of energy and knowledge to the Sisters Library. Whether you’re coming to use a computer, pick up holds, or need assistance locating a book, Elise is here to help. “I love using my knowledge to help customers discover something new. We have programming to inform people about legal systems, enrichment for kids, and tools to develop new skills, like gardening,” says Elise. It comes as no surprise that her favorite library service is Libby—a free app for borrowing digital audiobooks, ebooks, and magazine. “I rarely have the time or attention span to sit down and read a whole book. With an audiobook I can do chores or go for a walk and pretty much listen anywhere at any time.” The next time you’re in Sisters, be sure to get a reading recommendation or random history fact from Elise. She’s happy to suggest a new favorite book, like Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson, or let you know why the Twinkie flavor switched from banana to vanilla during WWII.

Banned and challenged books come in all shapes and sizes. From Tony Morrison’s The Bluest Eye to the Harry Potter series, the debate over banned and challenged books is nothing new, but there are renewed efforts to limit what is available. One middle school educator is leading by example—showing that what can’t be censored is what you’re reading and your actions. “In my 25 years of teaching this is the first time we are focusing a theme around banned books,” says Kristin Sacks. This past spring, her eighth grade students’ literature circle each chose a challenged book to read and discuss in small groups. “When you censor what literature is available, you are narrowing the information that kids get to read and learn about.” Inspiration struck in her hometown of Sisters during Banned Books Week where she gathered bookmarks and stickers to motivate and encourage her students. “My happiest memories are in libraries. Libraries matter because they are a symbol of democracy and there’s something available for everyone.”

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT LIBRARIAN

Have you ever thought, “I’m so glad the library has this book—I’ve been looking forward to reading it”? Then credit is due to Le in the library’s Technical Services department, which is responsible for purchasing and cataloging all library materials. Since joining DPL in 2020, Le is passionate about curating and expanding the Library of Things collection. “Every ‘thing’ comes with instructional books, as well as necessary supplies, so even if you’re a complete beginner, you can get started trying out a new hobby right away,” says Le. Whether you’re trying to find the answer to a specific question, broaden your horizons by learning about a perspective or experience, or develop a new skill— like a pasta making—the library gives customers a reliable place to start. Le enjoys reading a lot of comics, graphic novels, and manga. “My favorite superhero team is the X-Men, my favorite comics writers are Alison Bechdel, Mariko Tamaki, and Grant Morrison, and for good measure, my all-time favorite authors are Samuel R. Delany and Toni Morrison.”

La Pine Library

The La Pine Library is the first to undergo a complete remodel and re-open to the public, and it is now poised to better serve the growing community in southern Deschutes County. A bright and open floorplan invites customers to explore a robust collection of books and resources. New seating areas—including around a cozy fireplace—are ideal for reading and working. An all-new children’s discovery space and new community rooms give the public even more access to much-needed communal spaces.

Sisters Library

The Sisters Library is the next library to re-open following an extensive remodel. Look for updates to things you love, such as a new fireplace and an enhanced community room that opens up into the library when more space is needed. The colorful and interactive children’s discovery area encourages learning and exploration, and two new reservable rooms allow for even more access to meeting space, something the community requested in a variety of focus sessions.

The Sunriver Library will close temporarily in mid-October for its remodel. A temporary library will operate out of a mobile unit in the library’s parking lot during construction and will provide a place to drop off and return library materials, pick up holds, access public computer and printing/copying, and allow for limited browsing.

Redmond Library

Construction on the new Redmond Library is right on track. Large beams and panels now in place provide a sneak peek of the new building as it takes shape. Once complete, the Redmond Library will be even larger than the Downtown Bend Library and will include flexible meeting and gathering rooms, collaborative and co-working areas, children’s discovery and DIY spaces, and more books and resources than ever before.

Celebrate Your Right to Read

While Banned Books Week (October 1–7) is an annual awareness campaign that spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books, intellectual freedom is something that libraries strive to protect every day of the year. Libraries are forums for information and ideas, and the First Amendment protects the right to receive and possess information.

“We stand behind the rights of all users to have access to information,” says Emily O’Neal, the library’s Technical Services Manager and the Chair of the Oregon Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Committee. “ Within your First Amendment right, you have a right to freedom of speech. What the courts have held is that in order to be given your right to freedom of speech, you also have to be able to have informed thought. And that’s where your freedom to information is also tied to that freedom of speech. It’s fundamental to our institution to protect the First Amendment rights of all our users.”
