ven if only a myth, the first known concept of a pageant was a toe-to-toe competition between Athena and Aphrodite. According to Greek mythology, Zeus sent a minion to judge the “fairest of them all,” a judgment (in Aphrodite's favor) that set in motion a chain reaction resulting with the all-out Trojan War. All told, not a great result. While we hardly want to dub ourselves as wiser than Zeus, we are smart enough—or perhaps in this day-and-age of crowd-sourcing, modern enough—to let you, the readers, decide the fairest of them all, and have draped the winners in pageant sashes. We were excited to have more readers than ever offering their opinions and votes this year, and are pleased to present the 2014 Best of Central Oregon.

hile he’s not the namesake of the Westside upscale eatery Ariana—that would be his lovely wife and co-chef—Chef Andres Fernandez is certainly one-half of the inspiration behind the meals at one of Bend’s finest dining establishments, and one outta two ain’t bad. After meeting in culinary school at COCC a decade ago, Ariana and Andres opened Ariana in 2004 with the goal of highlighting the fresh and simple ingredients that are abundant in the Pacific Northwest. “We’ve worked hard to keep learning and changing, and to always get better at what we do,” said Andres, who explained that the couple’s now seven-year-old daughter Gabriella used to nap in the back of the house as a toddler while he and Ariana worked away in the kitchen. “We’ve matured. When we started we had really good ideas and I think as time goes on we have created our own style.” It’s the restaurant's consistency and diverse five-course tasting menu that afforded the couple the opportunity and honor of cooking for the James Beard Foundation in New York City earlier this year. “It was really cool cooking in that place where all the greatest chefs have cooked,” said Andres. “And to be in New York and going to a bunch of restaurants we always wanted to go to. It was a great experience to be cooking there, but also to go and learn new things and see what

At the time, he explains, his then-girlfriend was out of town for a term, and to fill the time, he picked up the new hobby. When she returned to Eugene, she dumped him, but the skill set—and love for coffee beans—remained. Now, several years later, Beach has started a successful business with his now-wife and, a year ago, they had their first kid. “It is about connection,” says Beach. plugs fill his ear lobes. This attitude of “connection” carries through from the friendly interactions at the counter, to his desire to have first-hand knowledge about who grows the beans for his shops. Last year, he traveled (with four staff members) to a family farm in El Salvador where many of the beans he uses for his popular espressos originate. “Coffee is so far away,” he explains, “not like hops or wine. You don’t get that connection if you don’t go down there.” (PB)

here’s nothing quite like biting into a sweet, tender peach picked at the height of ripeness. It’s a rare treat in a world where most grocery store produce ripens on a truck as it travels thousands of miles from the orchard to the chain store. At the Bend Farmers’ Market, fresh, local, and organic are the rule, rather than the exception. Started in 1999 with just five local farmers, it has grown to more than 40 vendors in its 15th year. While produce comprises the bulk of the market’s offerings, the weekly summertime shop also offers meats, cheeses, and baked goods.
Best Grocery Store Newport Market Whole Foods Market
The Bend Farmers’ Market brings together Oregon producers from across the state—as close as 10 minutes away and as far as 3.5 hours. And though it may not be the first such market in the state, Market Manager Katrina Wiest says it is likely the most established and the longest running in Central Oregon. Bendites have grown fond of the market—which sets up in the Brooks Alley every Wednesday from June to October, from 3 to 7 pm—because “They’re making healthy lifestyle choices and wanting to support local,” Wiest says. And the market gives back with its Farm to School program, providing farm-fresh produce to Bend-La Pine schools during the school year, as well as supporting the summertime free lunch program. (ER)

or 19 years, Gene Fitzsimmons has been making mole. Every Monday at the Taco Stand, he cooks up his special recipe and slings the daily special for not much more than the cost of a mass-produced failure of a foot-long Subway sandwich. A local’s favorite and still mostly cash-only (they’ll take your card if you’re desperate for a taco but prefer real money), old-school establishment, Taco Stand is tucked away in the web of residential neighborhoods just beyond downtown. After Mole Mondays, the rest of the week consists of fish tacos, pork tacos, carne asada and mole verde, a featured special for every day, none made without some serious love and attention from Fitzsimmons. A 70-hour work week is normal, he said.
That’s part of what has kept the restaurant afloat for nearly a quarter of a century, and under his command for two decades. That, and its undeniable ability to crank out delicious, simplistic, reasonably priced Mexican food. And just like the food, Fitzsimmons' goals for the Taco Stand are simple. “I like to have fun when I'm at work,” said Fitzsimmons. “I like to keep the atmosphere light, it keeps everybody motivated. The most important thing is to give people a good product with the best service, at the best possible price.” Mission accomplished. Bean rice and cheese burritos and tacos start at $2.75. Meat or veggie enchiladas are $2.50 a pop (although we advise eating about four to fill you up), and daily specials never stretch the budget. (BB)

he D&D takes pride in the fact that they mix the stiffest drink in town while also serving the best hangover food, no matter the time of day. It is comforting to know that it's possible to get obliterated and then build it right back up again all under the same roof. “The fact that we make as many things as possible in-house, like the gravy, biscuits, corned beef and hash browns, makes it easy for us to keep things consistent,” longtime bartender Buck Bales tells me. That gravy is a soul Band-Aid, filling in the cracks the night before has made. The entire breakfast menu, along with the Baja Burger, The Fatman and a few other choice selections, can make the worst hangover into the best morning, although, I’ll admit, it also can tend to lead to more drinking. ”It's comfort food like mom and grandma used to make when you needed to feel better... and it's just good greasy diner food!,” says Bales. He's not wrong. (JR)

owgirl Cash is not a traditional western wear store–it’s a BEND western wear store, and owner Rebecca Charlton understands the difference. After all, she comes from a long line of Central Oregon cowgirls. Her mother, Jeannie Smith, was the Deschutes Rodeo Queen in 1962, and Cowgirl Cash pays homage to her spirit, offering clothes, boots and accessories that are beautiful, but most importantly, are always authentic and practical. You won’t find brands available at the mall here. Instead, for the last five years Rebecca has offered vintage and unique items that are time-tested (Great Western, Pendleton, and other iconic Oregon brands), local (vintage-style swimsuits made in Portland), or handmade (gorgeous dresses created by Bend artisans). What Rebecca is offering is far more than simple rodeo duds—it’s a western lifestyle, with an important emphasis on making a conscious choice about what you wear, something that Bend customers appreciate! Boot lovers especially will find plenty of reasons to kick up their heels at Cowgirl Cash. (CH)

uncan McGeary has owned Pegasus Book store in the same location on Minnesota Avenue. for 30 years. He is the second owner only to Mike Richardson, now the publisher of Dark Horse Comics in Portland, who owned the shop for five years before McGeary took over. The downtown store is legendary for anyone in Bend who ever identified as a nerd, geek, dweeb, smarty-pants or a generally awesome human being. Pegasus sells everything. Comics, toys, sport cards, games (board games like Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride, card games and role-playing games like D&D and Magic the Gathering) anime and manga, art and all things pop-culture. It’s so much more than just a sci-fi geek’s paradise, it’s a haven for literature junkies, too. The store carries books from Hemingway and Faulkner to Gillian Flynn and Cheryl Strayed. “If I think a book is good, I'll try to carry it,” said McGeary. “I like to have full selections of authors like Kurt Vonnegut and Tom Robbins and Philip K. Dick and Chuck Palahniuk, Chuck Bukowski, that kind of thing.” Whatever you love with a fan-boy/girl passion, Pegasus carries it. And McGeary loves his job with that kind of same kind of passion. He has to, to keep an independent bookstore afloat during the age of amazon.com and after a stiff recession. “My blog, The Best Minimum Wage Job a Middle Aged Guy Has Ever Had, has been going every day for almost eight years now. It started off being about downtown and owning a business and the economy. I still talk about those things, but I mostly talk about writing these days,” he explained. McGeary wrote three mass-market paperbacks 30 years ago, "Star Axe", "Snowcastles" and "Icetowers". Recently, he was able to get back to writing and has cranked out "Led to the Slaughter: the Donner Party Werewolves," and a Vampire Evolution trilogy, "Death of an Immortal," "Rule of Vampire," and "Blood of Gold," all published by Books of the Dead Press and avalible online. He also just finished a book called "Tuskers" about—get this—a wild pig apocalypse in Arizona. But it’s not all pig-pocalypse. As evidenced by McGeary’s inventory, he is also a comic book classicist. “Marvel and DC are the biggest companies in my store, you know, Spider-Man and X-Men and Hulk, and Superman and Batman,” said McGeary. “My own tastes are running toward independent adventure comics from Dark Horse and Image and the adult Vertigo line from DC. Titles like Saga, The Manhattan Projects, Sandman, The Unwritten, stuff like that. More sci-fi or crime or adventure than superhero. However, my guys at the store are loving the comics coming out these days from DC and Marvel. Hawkeye and Deadpool, and of course, Guardians of the Galaxy.” (BB)

s a single parent of an almost-five-year-old, I know how agonizing it can be to find top-notch childcare. So here ya go, parents: Whether you’re looking for just a couple weekdays sans kiddos, or you’re virtually in need of a pseudo-mom, Westside Shorty’s tops our list for outstanding childcare. Open year-round for children ages three to seven, the state-licensed preschool stands out with its ADD-friendly “rotating schedule,” keeping the little shorties on their toes with age-tailored manipulatives, outdoor playtime and an arts & crafts room guaranteed to expose your child’s inner Jackson Pollock. Did I mention hearty meals are provided? And the qualified folks at Westside Shorty’s love what they do. Accustomed to seeing some children more than 50 hours a week, the staff truly strives to encourage individuality, enhance social skills and basically offer a one-bighappy-family second home for your sweet pea (in a non-“The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” kind of way). hen you’re getting a piece of art riveted onto your body that’s going to last the rest of your life, there’s no screwing around. Monolith Tattoo Studio gets that. That’s why they hire only the most qualified and talented artists. The shop's staff are versed in every aspect of tattooing, grey scale realism, traditional, color realism, Celtic tribal, portrait and more. Because it’s the Best of Central Oregon issue, we asked our readers to send in their best Bend-inspired tattoos and our winner is a sleeve by Ryan Osborne, one of the six full-time artists at Monolith. hile tattoos dedicated to fleeting human loves are often ill-advised, paying homage to a city is a far less risky proposition. That’s not to say a person can’t fall out of love with a city, but their new object of geographical affection isn’t likely to be jealous of the former lover. That’s why we sought out the best Bend-inspired tattoo. Oregon tats are common, so we hunted down something specific-Central Oregon references and symbolism. We found that work of permanent art on the arm of Joey Hayes, a 24-year-old manager and bartender at Sky High Brewing in Corvallis. That’s right, Hayes, whose entire right arm is an in-progress love letter to the city of Bend, doesn’t even live here. Though Hayes only lived in Bend for four years before moving to Corvallis, the city made a strong impression. “There is no better place in the world. When I moved there in January 2010, I instantly fell in love. The people are so nice and welcoming,” Hayes says. “I can go on and on.” But he needed a new perspective on life. So he packed up for Corvallis in 2013, making a point to bring a piece of Bend with him. The sleeve, by Ryan Osborne at Monolith Tattoo, features landmarks: the Sisters Mountains, Deschutes River and the Old Mill District, as well as flora and fauna, a cougar, an owl, and pinecones. He hopes to add a sunset over Sisters, and may include references to Bend’s beer culture before all is said and done. In the end, he hopes to come full circle. “I will open up a pub and it will be in Bend,” says Hayes, who worked for 10 Barrel before moving to Corvallis. “It's just a matter of when.” (ER)

ll too often, the typical auto repair shop experience is anything but “happy.” For Bend drivers, that’s not the case at Happy Danes, a shop owned by Kaj and Michelle Larsen who are—you guessed it—a couple of happy danes. Kaj (pronounced “K-eye”) has been working on cars since he was 16 years old, when he came to the United States with his parents from Copenhagen. His wife Michelle, who also has Danish roots, admits that the shop name was a no brainer: “It’s true that 95
percent of the time we are in a pretty good mood!” With an emphasis on oneon-one communication and excellent customer service, Happy Danes has been under the hood on behalf of thousands of Bend customers for more than 31 years. Their philosophy is all about getting to know the person behind the wheel. You can always count on a personal connection with Happy Dane's technicians, who work hard to make their customers as happy as they are. (CH)

lthough not old enough to attend concerts during Detroit’s musical heyday—from Motown’s catchy R&B to the proto-punk of The Stooges—Kris Arnold’s hometown still has left its mark on her music sensibilities. With long, spiky blond hair, Arnold strongly resembles '70s punk diva Debbie Harry, and she admits, she likes her music “Down and dirty gritty.” Certainly her popular mid-day show often draws from bands that are as abundant in noise as in talent. Arnold arrived on the west coast, working for Atlantic Records, before migrating to Oregon. With radio experience on a college station—and a down-to-the-DNA love for
music—Arnold was soon volunteering on KPOV before being tapped by 92/9 for a full-time job. In many ways, the radio dial in Bend is about as far from southern California’s corporate-managed music industry that Arnold could get—and, for that matter, with 90 percent of the radio stations in America owned by large media corporations like Clear Channel, Bend is a holdout, with almost all the stations owned locally, including 92/9 with an independence that translates into a great deal of creative latitude and freedom for the deejays. Speaking about the owner of 92/9, Arnold exclaims, “He just lets us fly.” The result is a style that is simultaneously laid-back, yet passionate—and clearly roundly liked by listeners. (PB)

rowing up in Central Oregon offers plenty of material for creative writers. Just ask Benjamin Percy and his little sister Jennifer, both of whom have made names for themselves among American Literati. Ben, who describes himself as a “side-burned, growly voiced author,” has set much of his fiction in and around Bend — including his most recent horror novel (and part one of a werewolf trilogy) “Red Moon.” “It’s an amazing place,” says Ben, of the home his family built in Tumalo. “My childhood gave rise to lots of stories. When my mind opens up, that’s the place it goes. I’m eager to put my grateful stamp on it.” “Red Moon”, which Percy is currently adapting for a Fox TV series, offers a delightful, if grisly, view of the rugged landscapes we all know and appreciate. However, it’s his earlier short fiction that truly puts Central Oregon in the literary spotlight. In his award-winning collection, "The Language of Elk," Percy describes the dry side of the Cascades, “Where the wind blows in heated gusts, like the breath of a big animal.” It’s a familiar feeling for Bend residents this summer. His younger sister Jennifer, who followed him through the prestigious Iowa Writer’s Workshop graduate program and into a career writing nonfiction, recently published "Demon Camp," an examination of the dark path out of post-traumatic stress that many soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have experienced. On the surface, her work is wildly different from her older brother’s—speculative fiction vs. long form reportage—but both push the boundaries of society, and ask us to take a hard look at the world as we know it, and the fears we face. hanan Kelley pointed out that naming her best variety show host is like saying she’s our favorite only child. She’s the one-and-only variety show host in town, and with her team of expert humorists, musicians and film crew, she’s been putting together live episodes of The Night Light Show at Tin Pan Theater for the past eight months, a concept that took shape in just two days with Kelley’s vision and a little help from her friends. “We wanted to make people laugh,” explained Kelley. “To bring people together and to come to Tin Pan and bring more energy to that space, expose it to a wider audience, and feature people doing cool stuff. I have a lot of friends doing amazing things.” For the uninitiated, the Night Light Show is a variety program somewhere between Johnny Carson and Saturday Night Live. Kelley hosts the show, conducting interviews with local business owners and cultural masterminds, and she shines in hilarious film and live skits and serves as a general emcee introducing comedians, musicians and other uniquely Bend guests. Kelley hopes that bringing the community together in this fun, monthly format (now streaming online!) will help to build connections in the community and entertain Bend in a new format. “This is a unique platform,” said Kelley, “an alternative to the newspaper or the TV news. Bend is small enough where we can actually do something, and have a life that leaks over and helps everyone around us.” (BB)

local fixture for more than 30 years, Hutch’s Bicycles has grown alongside Bend’s bike culture. When Jim Lewis—who has worked with bikes since he started building them in his garage at age 9 and has never been employed by any other company—was tasked with opening the first of two Bend shops on the eastside in 1981, he quickly inserted himself and the shop into the local cycling scene. Hutch’s General Manager Mike McMackin says Lewis started the noon ride, a 90-minute (and typically 30-mile) lunchtime race that was, from the 1990s through 2000s, a benchmark training ride in the state. Though participation has trickled down to a handful each weekday, McMackin says they once joked it was the only 300-day stage race. “There’s no apologies on the noon ride,” McMackin, who has been with Hutch’s for 25 years, recalls. “It’s only cordial till you get to the end of the parking lot.” As Bend has become a destination not only for outdoor enthusiasts, but also for families raising children, Hutch’s has kept pace as a family-friendly shop. McMackin points out that not all bike shops sell children’s bicycles, but at Hutch’s they are a highlight. And, he adds, the staff tries to treat customers like family, too. “Our customer service doesn’t just span years or decades, it spans generations. People still come in and tell us they bought their first bike in Eugene in 1962,” McMackin says. “You can buy bikes anywhere. Service is really the only game we have.” (ER)

Bike Mechanic Barb Bohm-Becker
BRI BREY
very type of athlete has a muscular calling card (think: swimmers’ sculpted lats, runners’ killer quads). For cyclists, it’s cut calves that call out to passersby—sinewy and strong as they pump the pedals. And while there is no shortage of impressive gastrocnemii (that’s Latin for “stomach of the legs”—fitting, since at their peak, they are the six-pack of the lower body) in Bend. But we have to give props to the gams of one 65-year-old bike mechanic with an awesomely alliterative name: Barb BohmBecker. Becker is modest about her oft-admired calves. Though she typically rides more than 100 miles per week and is currently training (on the trails and in the gym) for her first ever mountain bike race, she attributes her shapely legs to genetics. “Do you want to know the secret to getting great calves?” Becker asks. “To be short and have to reach the top shelf.” Becker, who has worked as a bike mechanic for Sunnyside Sports for more than 20 years, says she’s always gotten comments about her calves, but they weren’t always complimentary. And though they keep her from wearing heels much, she says that fact attracted her to counterculture—where she now happily resides with her short, pink-streaked locks. Despite her claims that her legs are merely a product of heredity, she isn’t resting on her laurels. Becker started working with a trainer last year and though everyone told her simply “maintaining” was a worthy goal for her age, she instead opted for two “impossible” goals. The first, which she has already achieved, was to serve as a guide for Central Oregon 500—five straight days of 100-mile-a-day rides. Next up: the Abomination Oregon Coast Gravel Epic on Aug. 23—a 73-mile, 10,000-footclimb race. She hopes to finish “before they take down the balloons.” (ER)

ast fall, taxpayers voted on measure 9-94, a transient room tax increase that set aside funds to be distributed fairly among Bend’s arts organizations. Nice job, taxpayers. The opportunity to start a granting program for the arts that will potentially help to bolster tourism in shoulder seasons and winter months, diversifying tourism offerings and injecting Bend’s cultural assets with a much-needed syringe of cold hard cash is a huge opportunity, said Doug La Placa, CEO of Visit Bend. “Establishing public funding for the arts in Bend has been a long time coming,” said La Placa. “It’s exciting to finally have it in place.” Starting in 2015, any new or existing tourism programs will be eligible for grants: BendFilm, High Desert Museum, Tower Theatre, Deschutes Historical Society, music promoters, theater groups, public art curators, and beyond. “Establishing public funding for the arts says a lot about our community’s commitment to and support of the arts,” said La Placa. “It takes money to cultivate extraordinary communities, and money for the arts has always been Bend’s missing link.” (BB)

hile it’s a rare treat to be excused from my desk during typical happy hour hours (who gets off work at 4 pm?!), I’ve made the harddriven sacrifice to try just about every discounted eating and drinking scenario I could reasonably get my mouth around in Bend. As far as quality and bang-for-my-buck is concerned, the hands-down favorite is 900 Wall. A treat because on a lowly journalist’s budget, a full-scale meal that can easily run into the triple digits (don’t judge me, I drink a lot of cocktails) is out of my budget all but once or twice a year. The happy hour options at 900 Wall offer an airtight way to try a variety of options on the mouthwatering menu without wanting to throw myself off the restaurant’s delicately decorated balcony after looking at my check. Ranging from $1.50 for an oyster on the half shell, but not extending over $11, and running the gambit of delicious salads, fried green beans and even a pretty delightful burger, plus rare-for-Bend specialties like Carpaccio, ceviche and chicken liver pate, uh…what was I saying? Now I’m just thinking about the delicious, delicious menu. Add a freshly squeezed greyhound or a glass of totally not box wine for just $5-$6 and you’ve got an unbeatable meal at an unbeatable price. Happy hour is 3-6 pm daily. (BB)

The D&D Bar and Grill The Dogwood Cocktail Cabin bar that both exudes urbane cool and rustic charm, a mix that draws from her personality as both the owner and popular bartender. “I think the key to being a memorable bartender,” she explains, “is mostly to make friends with your customers, and get to know them. To remember their name and their favorite cocktail when they walk in the door. I hang out with my customers on a daily basis and they become a part of my life,” she says, joyfully adding, “which I enjoy.” (JR)

decade ago, Gary Bonacker, Sunnyside Sports co-owner and mountain bike pioneer who spent the '70s and '80s bombing around Mt. Bachelor on a clunky bike, hit perhaps his hardest obstacle yet: He was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. But Bonacker, now 60, went through chemotherapy and survived with his wit, charm and dedication intact. As well, ever the pioneer, he founded the popular cycling race, Tour des Chutes. To commemorate Bonacker’s fighting spirit, Worthy brews a special beer each summer in conjunction with the Tour des Chutes. The Source's beer reviewer Thom Pastor comments that “The beer in honor of Gary couldn’t be more fitting—very approachable; a crowd pleaser.” A Belgian-style wheat—a Witbiers, to be precise—No Quit Wit is a great summer beer—low alcohol, bright carbonation, and a touch of sweetness. f you like buttes, then you live in the right place. Bend is surrounded by hundreds of them. Between Pilot Butte and Newberry Crater 22 miles to the south, there are more than 70 cinder cones that rise 100 feet in height or more. One of my favorites is Luna Butte, located 15.5 miles south of Bend. From the air, it looks like a sleeping dragon, its back rising 600 feet above the forest floor and long tail gently curving to the north. Unlike most buttes along the north flanks of Newberry Crater, Luna Butte is nearly treeless along its ridge (due to the 18 Fire of 2003), so the views from the top are worth the climb. There aren’t any official trails up Luna Butte, but it’s best to start from the south side and head up the volcanic scree covered in a patchwork of manzanita, scrub brush, and determined gnarly trees. To get there from Bend, take China Hat Road south to Swamp Wells Road, heading south 3.9 miles to the junction with NF-9714. If the road is good, you can continue 0.8 miles east to the base of the butte. Kolby Kirk is currently writing a hiking guidebook to the buttes in Central Oregon. www.hikeyourbutteoff.com (KK)

ike many businesses in Sisters, the quality and sophistication at Jen’s Garden far outpaces what is commonly expected in a small town. One of the finest and best-thought-out restaurants in Central Oregon, if not the state, Jen’s Garden nestles cozily into two rooms of a French country house—and, of course, spills over into a comfortable outdoor space, the “garden” in the namesake. The food is consistently succulent and detailed, with homemade maple syrups drizzled on halibut cheeks with, of course, home-cured bacon chunks and, generally, a menu drawing inspiration from French cuisine. But its also open-minded and versatile enough to consider decadent and clever options, like summer salad piled with crispy bites of asparagus and plump snap peas, and salmon-cured wontons. The wine list is a well-curated collection of hardy French selections, Australian Malbecs and Willamette Valley pinot noirs. Berets off to Jen! (PB)

unriver Brewing Company reflects the style and sensibility of the city it calls home—easygoing, approachable and fun. Serving as much of a centering point for the town as anywhere else, the brewpub has recently expanded its production facilities, a measure that says a lot about its popularity and aspirations. Its beers are fun and dedicated to the place from where they come, both in terms of geography and genealogy—like the “Lazy River Lager” and “Grandma’s Original Ale.” (A side compliment: Although a beer as well as a book shouldn’t be judged by its label, Sunriver Brewing’s have some of the most playful and artistic labels in the business.
