BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF CENTRAL OREGON ABOUT US
Mentorship remains one of the most powerful tools we have to close the gap between people and possibility. The power of mentorship lies in the moments that spark curiosity, aspiration, and inspire potential. Maybe it was the coach who encouraged you to keep going. The guidance counselor who insisted your dreams were within reach. Even the littlest moments can grow into big ones – with a little encouragement, a little hope, and a little inspiration. You don’t need to have a specific title, a degree, or any special qualifications other than being compassionate, patient, and accepting. You don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be present. It takes a little time, a little encouragement and a laugh or two, so that every child has what—and who—they need to achieve a BIG and brighter future. 90% of Bigs with Big Brothers Big Sisters are proud of their time mentoring. 85% of alumni believe their involvement changed their life for the better. Mentors, called Bigs, say they benefitted from their mentorship relationship just as much, if not more, than their Littles. You have a big opportunity in front of you—to not only impact a child’s life today, but to transform their potential for tomorrow. Become a Mentor. Go Big Today. We’re always looking for people eager to positively impact a child and improve their community at the same time. Big Brothers are especially in high demand. Nationwide, more than 70% of children waiting for a Big are boys, but only 3 out of every 10 inquiries to volunteer come from men. Research shows that having the positive influence of a mentor makes a real difference in a kid’s life. For a few hours, a couple times a month, you can give a Little the invaluable gift of your friendship. By simply changing their perspective of what the world can offer, you can literally start changing their life. Play a board game. Make fun crafts. Hit the playground together. Just as your options are unlimited, so is your Little’s potential. It tkaes LITTLE to be BIG. We are J Bar J Youth Services.

CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF CENTRAL OREGON ABOUT US
Central Oregon is known for the high desert landscape and outdoor recreation, but lacks informal learning opportunities and educational programming for the youngest members of the community. For decades, research has shown that understanding STEAM concepts begins in infancy (Wiley 2012, Butterworth 2005), but engagement and play opportunities based on these concepts still lag for young children. Caregivers and educators recognize this need, but often find themselves with limited resources. In an increasingly complex world, a Children’s Museum is a place where children and their families can experience the world through hands-on-play and exploration in surroundings designed just for them. At CMCO, visitors will step into a rich and immersive environment of STEAM-based exhibits and programming that is firmly grounded in the local environment and history of Bend and Central Oregon. As the only region in Oregon without a Children’s Museum, CMCO will become a much needed quality of life resource for informal, hands-on family learning. With a deep commitment to accessibility and inclusion, CMCO will be a community connector across the region and a place where visitors feel welcomed and accepted.

EVERY CHILD ABOUT US Every year in the tri-county area, over 400 Central Oregon children and families are impacted by foster care. At any point in time, about 250 children are in foster care with a disproportionate availability of a mere 172 certified resource (foster) homes tri-county. The majority of Central Oregon’s current resource providers are certified to care only for children related to them; leaving very few general homes who can care for any child in the foster care system. Due to the lack of adequate general foster homes, children all too often experience frequent placement disruption and separation from siblings. Every Child Central Oregon is determined and hopeful in our mission to improve upon the trauma and mental health effects placement issues can create for a child in foster care; offering no-to-low barrier opportunities to volunteer, donate, and learn more about becoming a resource family. We dream of a day where there are more providers than children in care, ensuring that every child has a safe and loving home to be in during their time in care. Through our My NeighbOR tangible goods program, we provide essentially needed tangible items to children and families impacted by foster care. My NeighbOR relies on the generosity and mobilization of the community to meet these needs and provides people with a way to impact a child’s life. Since the launch of My NeighbOR, in May of 2020, we have fulfilled over 3,000 tangible items through the generosity of Central Oregon community members and businesses! FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER ABOUT US It all starts with family relationships! Strong, connected relationships let children know they are loved, belong, and can overcome challenges. Without this sense of belonging, children can become vulnerable to negative coping behaviors, like substance abuse. You can provide the gift of prevention by joining us in strengthening parent-child relationships. Parents who attend our classes learn positive ways to guide and discipline their children. “These past two years our family has dealt with job loss, moving, and health problems. SAMARA LEARNING CENTER ABOUT US
Samara Learning Center is one of the few organizations in Oregon that specializes in working with kids who are neurodivergent (ADHD, dyslexia, high-functioning autism, etc.). We are named after the helicopter-like winged seeds of a tree, such as a Big Leaf Maple. Similar to samaras, kids need the right environment to grow strong enough to reach for the sky and flexible enough to bend in the wind. We teach kids to “Soar with Your Strengths” through our Samara Day School, MAPLE Tutoring program, Samara After-school Program (SAP), and our Elective Collective (enrichment opportunities, like Social Skills Improv Class, StopMotion Animation, etc.). Samara helps kids find their individual pathways to success while participating in the cultivation of society to best guide them on their way. Therefore, Samara additionally co-facilitates Central Oregon Attention Deficit Disorder Info./Support Group (COADD), part of Central Oregon’s Decoding Dyslexia, and speak/ present at community engagements. In addition, 2023 was the 6th year that Heather Chatem, Executive Director, spoke to the Teacher Education program at OSU, Cascades as an expert for a “Variety of Learners.” At least 30% of the people in the penitentiary system have been identified as being neurodivergent, but almost the same percentage also makes up the entrepreneurs of the US. Let us all help the successful pathway more likely to be traversed. This profile is sponsored by:

SMART READING ABOUT US SMART Reading is a children’s literacy nonprofit that serves kids in Oregon’s highest-need schools with two ingredients critical for literacy and learning success: shared reading time and access to books. We mobilize volunteers to read with PreK through third-grade children, building confidence, literacy skills, and a love of reading. Kids in our program get to choose and keep 14 books a year to build their own personal libraries! Simply put, life is harder when children can’t read proficiently. Reading is a critical gateway skill that paves the pathway for successful futures. Without it, kids are less likely to graduate from high school or find gainful employment as adults, leading to a host of additional hardships. THE JASPER FOX PROJECT ABOUT US The mission of The Jasper Fox Project is to comfort families who have experienced stillbirth, miscarriage, and infant loss. We do this by sewing handmade stuffed animal foxes and weighing them to match the exact birth weight of a child who passed away. These foxes are personalized and unique gifts meant to offer comfort to the parents and recognition to the child. In the last two years, we have sent over 250 foxes to families in 38 states and 2 countries internationally. We have begun networking with local churches and resource centers to be a readily available service when a community member experiences a loss. In a situation where many friends and families don’t know what to do or to say, we offer a simple and sweet gift to be sent to those who are grieving. Our goal is that no family would have empty arms after a loss.

WARM SPRINGS COMMUNITY ACTION ABOUT US
The Warm Springs Community Action Team (WSCAT) is located on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, home to the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. WSCAT promotes community development on the reservation by empowering individuals and groups of people to realize their potential, become self-reliant, and effect positive change for themselves, their families, and their community. We offer services in four main program areas: asset building, local business promotion, workforce development, and education for personal and professional development. Our programs include individual development accounts (IDAs); free tax preparation services; financial, business, and homeownership education and counseling; apprenticeships, internships, and job training opportunities; and an outdoor market. We manage a food cart (Twisted Teepee) and café (Painted Pony) and are in the process of renovating the oldest building on the reservation, the Commissary, and turning it into a small business incubator. We offer a youth program, where youth learn about their culture while gaining work experience and skills in many of our program areas. Each of our programs provide resources for our tribal members to succeed, and some of our programs facilitate connections between Warm Springs tribal members and people/organizations throughout Central Oregon. We have provided assistance to over 2,000 people, about half the reservation’s population, over the past five years, and demand for our programs continues to grow. Please consider making a donation to support us and our continued success in Warm Springs! Kw’athlashamash! (Thank you in Ichishkíin, one of the three tribal languages in Warm Springs).

HEARTS UNKNOWN EDUCATION (HÚE) ABOUT US Every kid deserves a safe place to work through big feelings. When kids come to Hearts Unknown Education (HÚE), that place might be a canvas (or a drum, or a stage, or a conversation with a caring mental health professional). We know art heals, and creative expression and community are two of the BEST ways we know to facilitate healing, create belonging, and nurture mental health for kiddos who are struggling with anxiety, depression, and other challenges. Hearts Unknown Education (HÚE) is a dynamic nonprofit organization that guides young people who are struggling emotionally with a unique offering of imaginative experiences in a safe and supportive environment. With an emphasis on “creative wellness,” HÚE provides valuable opportunities for at-risk youth (age 6-18) to express themselves through art (we currently offer painting, knitting and music with ideally theatre, photography, and film down the road), to connect with one another, and to learn appreciation of their special talents and perspectives. HÚE is dedicated to supporting both youth and family members in finding community resources, improving communication and connection, and above all finding a safe space. To ensure that finances are not a barrier to the type of connection and healing kids find at HÚE, all classes are offered free of charge. Your Donation to HÚE provides: • Funding to secure a dedicated art space where HÚE Kids can THRIVE • Increased access to qualified mental health support and community resources • Expanded class availability and offerings • Supplies and materials needed for students to express themselves

Previously known as the Humane Society of Redmond, founded in 1987, BrightSide is a high-save shelter, devoted to offering shelter, care, placement, and preventive services to animals in Central Oregon. Before any animal leaves our care to a forever home, they receive comprehensive medical attention. This includes vaccinations, microchipping, spaying or neutering, and licensing. We want to make sure that every animal is fully prepared for the next chapter of their life, bringing joy to their new families and providing a safe and healthy future. Our commitment extends beyond the animals under our care through our pet food pantry, a lifeline for individuals in need. On average, we assist 3 to 5 people daily by providing essential dog and cat food, ensuring their pets receive proper care even during challenging circumstances. At the core of our mission is the commitment to providing animals a second chance at a fulfilling life. BrightSide serves as their voice, advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves.

COMPANION ANIMAL MEDICAL PROJECT ABOUT US Join CAMP’s “No Place Like Home” Campaign! Companion Animal Medical Project (CAMP) is a homegrown, grassroots 501c3 nonprofit organization in Central Oregon. Established in 2020, CAMP’s mission is to help ease the burden on those experiencing homelessness, or facing other debilitating financial hardships, by providing veterinary care and supplies to their companion animals. Since our inception we have, at no-cost to owners, • Vaccinated 1,000+ pets, • Performed 300+ spay & neuters, • Financially covered 50 critical-care cases, • And, distributed 10,000+ pounds of pet food. In the midst of a housing crisis, we are building something important in this place we all call “home.” We are laying a foundation of stability, hope, and unconditional love by ensuring the furry family members of our unhoused neighbors can thrive, regardless of their humans’ current circumstances. While our services are animal-focused, our goals are always human-centered. The saying goes, “There is no place like home.” But the idea of “home” extends beyond four walls and a roof. It is a place where we feel safe, secure, and supported. Sometimes that place looks like a building or a person, and sometimes it looks like a furball with a wagging tail. CAMP concentrates on the latter, but we honor all the ways “home” is expressed and experienced. CAMP is now looking for our own “home.” A space where we can stock-up on critical supplies, store our mobile clinic van, and safely provide short term foster or rehoming services when reunification is not possible. We have a goal of raising $15,000 by the end of 2023 in order to secure a rented office and warehouse facility. Please help us reach it by making a gift and joining our “No Place Like Home” campaign. A home for CAMP means a safer and healthier future for our community members regardless of their housing status. This profile is sponsored by:

EMBER’S WILDFLOWER ANIMAL SANCTUARY AND BUNNY RESCUE ABOUT US
Ember’s Wildflower Animal Sanctuary and Bunny Rescue is a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization established in 2019 that serves Central Oregon and surrounding regions by providing the only bunny-specific rescue and sanctuary option for our community. Domestic bunnies are the 3rd most abandoned pet. Our mission is to provide rescue and sanctuary to abandoned and unwanted domestic bunnies; to spay/neuter, vaccinate, provide veterinary care, and prepare them to be adopted into loving homes through socialization and training. To provide education and resources for current and future bunny owners and reduce cycles of surrendering unwanted animals by carefully reviewing potential adopters and ensuring good matches of humans and companion animals. For bunnies whose medical needs preclude them from adoption, we will provide lifelong sanctuary. Most rescues are experiencing record surrender and we are no exception. Our rescue barn is full, and we have a long waitlist. We request a surrender donation, although we don’t always receive one. Medical costs incurred with each bunny are as follows: $150 Spay $100 Neuter $30 RHDV2 vaccination $15 Microchip As of Sept. 1, Embers has taken in 344, spayed/neutered 233, adopted out 244, administered 224 RHDV2 vaccines and paid for 16 lifesaving surgeries.

EQUINE OUTREACH HORSE RESCUE ABOUT US
Equine Outreach is a horse rescue in Bend, Oregon that accepts as many abused, neglected, medically compromised, and senior equines as possible. From there, we focus on providing top-grade medical care, rehabilitation, positive training, and all the love, hugs, and TLC we can give. Some horses become sanctuary or hospice horses who remain in our care, while others are carefully and meticulously adopted out to new homes. While not always the case, Equine Outreach is often a landing place for horses and mules in their senior years who would otherwise have an uncertain future. We believe that every horse deserves respect, dignity, love, and compassionate care in all stages of life. We are a place for the community to participate in the care of these special equines while developing awareness of issues surrounding neglected and abused horses and learning horse handling skills. Because our senior herd all have special medical needs, we are seeking in part to fundraise this holiday to establish an Emergency Veterinary Care & Transport Fund. This fund will be used for obtaining safe transport to medical care and for unexpected medical emergencies that often cost double or triple of our routine vet care budget. However, there are many ways you can help! See below for how your dollars can go to work for our herd: $25 Buys must-have equipment like halters & salt licks $50 Buys a bag of grain for the herd $100 Buys medication for a senior horse $200 Buys a month’s supply of vitamins and supplements $500 Buys new equipment for the ranch $5,000 Provides a horse’s complete care for a year Thank you for considering donating to Equine Outreach this holiday season!

FURRY FREIGHT SHELTER TRANSPORT ABOUT US
Our mission at Furry Freight is to save lives by providing transport for dogs and cats from overpopulated areas to reduce euthanasia of adoptable pets. Our volunteers drive as far as Oklahoma and Texas to pick up these pets from our partners that are desperate to save them. Each pet is evaluated behaviorally and medically, then selected by our receiving partners throughout the Pacific Northwest. Pets go from unwanted and thrown away to loved family members just by changing their location. We also offer a Spay it Forward program through our partners in these overpopulated areas so when an owner with low income needs support getting their pets fixed, we are able to help which reduces the number of pets going into already overcapacity shelters. Your gift truly helps save lives. $35 pays to transport a pet to safety, $65 pays to fix a pet for an owner with low income, and prevents their puppies from going to the shelter. Want to learn more about our work? Follow us on social media or check out our website for volunteer opportunities at furryfreight.org/help.

HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE OCHOCOS ABOUT US
HSO was founded in 1995 in a temporary structure and serves a 3,000 square mile area stretching all the way to Burns with a diversified resident population that has grown 47% since its beginning! Though its major focus is Crook County, the animal shelter assists and adopts to people from all around Central Oregon, including Bend, Redmond, Sisters, and adjacent towns. The shelter provides for roughly 1,000 animals each year and is run by a fiscally responsible staff of eight full and part-time animal caretakers. The 27-year-old shelter has deteriorated significantly and must be replaced with the construction of a new shelter facility to provide safe, secure housing while minimizing interruption for the community’s animals and the public. Without a proper new shelter, the community risks reverting to a municipal run shelter utilizing tax dollars to pay living wages, benefits, and to build and operate the facility. HSO is in the last stages of design and construction documents and is seeking community support in the form of donations, in-kind pledges, and volunteers to help with fundraising. If this is not done immediately, the life of the Crook County shelter and community services HSO provides will be jeopardized.

November is National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM), a public awareness campaign designed to shine a light on youth who have run away and experienced homelessness that too often remain invisible. Once a young person faces the instability associated with homelessness, whether they are couch surfing, staying in shelters, or sleeping on the streets, the consequences can be far-reaching. Some youth, including young people who identify as Black and/or African American, LGBTQIA2S+, non-White, and/or unmarried and parenting, experience homelessness at significantly higher rates compared to their peers. Our goal is to work with homeless youth to prevent them from becoming homeless adults.

This year we: • Collected 50,000 pounds of produce for the regional food bank. • Distributed 3,200 ready-to-make Fresh Harvest Kits (fresh produce, pantry staples, spices, and a recipe). • Served 88 VeggieRx participants (our produce prescription program for people with diet-modifiable diseases). • Connected communities to strengthen rural food security. • Assisted 65+ farmers and ranchers through marketing, financial assistance, networking and educational opportunities. • Expanded consumer awareness of local producers through our Food and Farm Directory. If you also believe that everyone deserves good food, please support HDFFA with a donation today.

NEW EACH MORNING ABOUT US
In Oregon we are pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into trying to get people into drug and alcohol programs. Sadly, up to 85% fail the programs and return to the destructive lifestyle of addiction. Out of those that graduate approximately 50% fall back into the lifestyle of addiction. The wasted lives and wasted money are tragic. New Each Morning was created to address this critical problem and desperate need for post recovery support. We partner with successful women graduates of alcohol & drug treatment programs as they transition into our community in their newly found sober identity, providing connection and positive accountability. Post recovery support looks like weekly mentoring sessions, job search and preparation for job interviews, as well as many other needs such as clothing, transportation, groceries, assistance in medical issues, and a variety of other individual needs, often through collaboration with other nonprofits. To date New Each Morning has a 100% success rate of clients not returning to the addiction life style. Your small investment in the post recovery support New Each Morning provides can help make the hundreds of millions spent on the front end actually make a difference. Our biggest need right now is to acquire a van for transportation and a house for safe transitional living. Your assistance in funding this will help meet the basic needs of our courageous clients.

ROOTEDHOMES ABOUT US
Still Sustainable. Still Affordable. New Name. New Look. Kôr Community Land Trust has rebranded to RootedHomes. Over the past two years, the organization has not only expanded the number of net-zero homes it is building in Central Oregon, but also centered the needs of its homebuyers in its community designs and organizational leadership. Feedback from our homebuyers has shaped us into the non-profit organization we are today. In collaborating with them to choose our new brand, RootedHomes better connects the community to the intentionality of our brand and our value of sustainable building. Our homes root homebuyers to the Central Oregon community, and now our brand does too. RootedHomes provides environmentally sustainable and permanently affordable homeownership opportunities for those who contribute to the fabric of the Central Oregon economy and community. These are working families who can qualify for a mortgage but cannot afford to purchase a home given the housing crisis our community faces. Our homeowner shares the impact of being rooted to the community, “Owning an affordable home has even impacted me and my family emotionally. I have less anxiety about my financial stability and I don’t worry about having to move away from this area. I feel empowered to rely on myself and am finding confidence in being the person my siblings can also rely on.” RootedHomes envisions sustainable, equitable communities where everyone can afford to live where they work and play. RootedHomes is building 120 homes throughout Central Oregon in the next three years from Bend and Redmond, to La Pine and Sisters. With your help, we can raise $50,000 to help build sustainable and affordable homes for our local workforce. Donate now to help us reach our $25,000 goal that will be matched by a local family!

1000 FRIENDS OF OREGON ABOUT US For nearly 50 years, 1000 Friends of Oregon has defended and protected Central Oregon’s family farms and forests, promoted livable rural and urban communities, and held back sprawl into the natural landscapes we hold dear. Our simple but extraordinarily successful strategy is to focus on where it all starts: right under our feet, with how we use the land. Oregon’s visionary land use laws were enacted to ensure a better future for everyone. 1000 Friends has been their champion from the beginning. This year, Oregon has been facing extraordinary pressure from for-profit developers to ignore the land already available in our cities and expand urban growth boundaries into the wildland-urban interface, where homes – especially in Central Oregon – are at high risk of burning during a wildfire. Land grabs without a plan endanger our families, waste public dollars, and degrade the lands that make our home state of Oregon feel so special. That’s why our team of advocates partners with people from across the state to strengthen Oregon’s unique land use system to build housing inside our cities, away from major risk and in the heart of already-vibrant communities. Become a Friend of Oregon. Join us.

CENTRAL OREGON VETERANS RANCH ABOUT US The Central Oregon Veterans Ranch restores purpose and spirit to veterans of all ages and eras of war. Veterans share a bond. They understand the inherent sacrifices of their service, ranging from realities of war to the post-military service impact on physical, social, emotional, spiritual and cognitive aspects of health. We don’t take the freedoms secured by these sacrifices lightly. Perhaps the most profound of these sacrifices: moral injury and the loss of innocence. Our innovative, strengths-based approach is centered on social determinants of health and building community among a diverse population with high rates of disability, post-traumatic stress, chronic self-isolation, socioeconomic instability, and behavioral health challenges. Many of these individuals live in rural communities where access to care and support is limited. The welcoming support of peers experienced at The Ranch reduces self-isolation and loneliness and fosters belonging and feelings of being understood, proven protective factors against the risk of suicide, which tragically remains at 17 veterans every day in the US (US Department of Veteran Affairs, 2022). We use the platform of a working ranch to draw veterans together in a natural setting around a common purpose: caring for animals, the land, ourselves and each other. This unique approach promotes organic healing in a setting where nothing is forced or prescribed. Veterans discover a new sense of identity and purpose as they build relationships, find support, learn new skills and meaningfully contribute to a new mission. There is an innate trust formed because our programs exist outside of the traditional clinical health support system. We use T.R.U.S.T. as an acronym to define our core values of Teamwork, Respect, Unconditional Support, Stewardship and Transparency. We draw veterans from across the vast rural footprint of Central Oregon, with a focus on Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook Counties. Participants cover a wide age spectrum: from their 20’s-50’s from recent engagements in Afghanistan and/or Iraq, to Gulf War, Vietnam, and Korea era veterans in their 60’s-90’s. The multi-generational warrior camaraderie built around non-stigmatizing peer-driven agricultural programs create authentic connections and rekindle a sense of trust and belonging often lost after leaving the military.

DESCHUTES RIVER CONSERVANCY ABOUT US Founded in part by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and a diverse group of local stakeholders, Deschutes River Conservancy (DRC) has brought people together for more than 25 years to create consensus-based solutions to complex water issues. Through our longstanding partnerships and innovative programs, DRC has restored 350 cubic feet per second to our rivers and streams, improving fish and wildlife habitat. That’s the equivalent of 14 Olympic-sized swimming pools per hour pouring back into the Deschutes Basin. We are excited to announce the second year of our popular Raise the Deschutes seminar series, which educates the community so that everyone can have a voice in how our water is managed. Check our website for upcoming events and to watch previous talks. As we face continued drought and population growth in Central Oregon, tackling these issues is even more urgent. A gift to DRC is a gift to the river and all who depend on it, now and for generations to come!

UPPER DESCHUTES WATERSHED COUNCIL ABOUT US The Upper Deschutes Watershed Council (UDWC) has worked to protect and restore the 2,000,000-acre upper Deschutes River watershed through collaborative projects in watershed restoration, monitoring, and community awareness. Since becoming a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 1997, our organization has brought more than $20 million to watershed restoration and education projects in the upper Deschutes River watershed and has led or helped support the completion of over 50 habitat restoration projects. Healthy rivers and streams provide the clean water to support local economies, ecological diversity, recreational opportunities, and unparalleled natural beauty throughout the region, and the UDWC is committed to leading collaborative efforts that protect and restore the rivers and streams that make Central Oregon so unique. At the UDWC, we believe that community education is at the core of long-term conservation and watershed protection, and with our education program, The Upstream Project, we provide stewardship experiences that are designed to educate and inspire students of all ages to participate in streamside science, creative writing, music, art, and hands-on projects. Through our educational programming, we guide local students of all ages to forge a lifelong, caretaking bond with our home watershed. By helping students develop a sense of place while they also foster an informed sense of environmental stewardship, we seek to ensure the health of Central Oregon’s rivers and streams for generations. We also work with community groups, local businesses, recreation companies, and municipalities throughout the year to educate and engage them in hands-on stream stewardship and watershed education. Through activities such as riparian planting projects, river cleanup activities, and informational presentations about river health, we engage all of our community members in the protection and conservation of our watershed.

VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE ABOUT US Right now in Central Oregon, thousands of people without health insurance choose between healthcare and food, childcare, or housing. Without access to medical care, untreated conditions could lead to severe or life threatening illness, visits to the emergency room and overwhelming medical bills. Volunteers in Medicine is our successful, local solution to this terrible dilemma.
What we do
Our patients are low-income, working adults not covered by the Oregon Health Plan and who cannot otherwise afford insurance. We treat people by partnering with St. Charles, local pro-bono specialists, and nearly 2,000 volunteer doctors, nurses and community members over the last 20 years. It’s special. We are neighbors taking care of neighbors.
Tony’s story
Tony is a dishwasher at a local taco shop who began feeling dizzy until one day he fainted at work. When he awoke, his co-worker said this reminded him of diabetes. They drove straight to the emergency room, where Tony was tested. The co-worker was right: Tony had diabetes. Now, with a large medical bill from the emergency room and a new diagnosis, Tony was facing a major question. How would he pay for this health problem and provide for his family? But the nurse told Tony about VIM. He got a referral to our clinic and was seen quickly. We provided glucose monitoring, education about nutrition, and the medication Tony needs to stay healthy and keep working. “I don’t know what I would have done without VIM,” said Tony. “I would probably have gotten sicker, with more complications. It could have spiraled out of control. It’s scary to think about.”
The outcomes
In our 20 years, we’ve: • Treated 16,000 patients • Provided 111,000 patient visits • Racked up 114,000 volunteer hours • Provided $150 million+ in medical care and community benefit Change lives with a gift today!
