How Poets Jump for Joy*
The world gives us many downers. This workshop counters that energy by deliberately turning downers into poems of joy. Theologically-based commentary from poet Christian Wiman, who published a recent anthology of joy poetry, adds to the conversation. Participants are invited to write a new poem celebrating their own experience of joy and share this writing. Presenter Carol Barrett hopes to enable uplifting testimonies to poetry’s ability to capture some of our most treasured moments and realizations.

PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK
STAFF PROFILE
Daisy Keefer
PUBLIC SERVICES SPECIALIST
Daisy’s passion for libraries shines through in her daily interactions where she finds joy in helping customers discover the books they’ve been longing to read. She remarks affectionately about libraries, saying “There’s no other public forum that succeeds so completely at providing the needs and wants of its community.” Besides the excitement she gets in helping customers, she’s a super user of the Library of Things collection. She recently checked out the brush painting kit and experimented with different techniques. “It is such a great resource to get access to things someone may not have the means or space to own themselves,” says Daisy. In May, Daisy will complete her Master’s in Library Science degree, and she’s kept herself busy with plenty of reading along the way. “I reread the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, which is a favorite of mine from childhood, and the two series that follow—Heroes of Olympus and The Trials of Apollo.”
CUSTOMER PROFILE
Erin Merriman Zenor
PUBLIC SERVICES SPECIALIST
Meet Erin, one of Downtown Bend Library’s wonderful Public Services Specialists and Story Time facilitators. She also provides customer support for the HomeWord Bound program, a service that mails library materials to customers who are not able to come into the library on their own. “Story Time is my favorite to see kids getting excited about books and singing silly rhymes and songs,” says Erin. She discovered her love for literature at a young age when her dad read The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien to her and her brothers. “It’s my favorite book and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve re-read it since,” says Erin. When asked about libraries Erin remarks, “Libraries matter because for many people they are safe spaces to read, learn, or just be with no expectations or cost.” Speaking of no cost, Erin suggests trying out her favorite Library resource, the Library of Things collection—for free!
Randall Degges
Every night before bed, Randall’s mother Deniese would read to him and his siblings, her voice echoing tales as they drifted into lands far away. “As the oldest of four, I cherished those hours of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter our mother would read,” says Randall. As they got older and started reading books on their own, Deniese began working afternoon shifts at the Burbank Library and it became their second home. “After school I’d lose myself in the library’s collections, picking up programming books, eventually teaching myself to code on an old dos computer,” says Randall. From programming system hacks in video games to development engineering at tech start-ups, each line of code traced back to those early library days. “The library provides equitable opportunity to education without gates and barriers. We need investing in library spaces because it opened doorways for me I never dreamed possible.”

Redmond Library Community Celebration
Saturday, March 8 • noon–3:00 p.m.
Join us as we celebrate the new Redmond Library during this free community event. We’ll have live music, artist talks, hands-on activities, a balloon artist, the GlinWood Fae, and plenty of free swag—including limited-edition book bags! A professional photographer will be on hand for a free, book-themed photo shoot (check out or bring your favorite book for the photo if you’d like!). Check out the library, check out a book, and enjoy time with other members of the Redmond community.
THE ADULT AND TEEN COLLECTIONS are upstairs, as is a public meeting room that provides space for smaller-scale gatherings and programs. The northeast corner of the building features a large co-working area with private study rooms and plenty of space for collaboration.
YOU’LL FIND AMPLE SEATING with dynamic views throughout the upstairs area, as well as public computers and a print station. Fast and free wi-fi is available throughout the building.
DON’T MISS THE ART
.
John Grade’s “Sage” floats over the central staircase; it was inspired by the structure within the stem of our local sagebrush as well as by regional obsidian flows. Under the stairs you’ll find the bronze “Reading Girl,” who has been a beloved part of the Redmond Library for decades. Upstairs near the adult fiction section is Bill Hoppe’s “West Went,” a largescale oil painting that reflects the transparency and atmospheric perspective that are at the core of Hoppe’s work. And coming soon: an original work by Central Oregon artist Jason Graham, which will be installed on the second floor near the teen collection.
ON
THE FIRST FLOOR , large and divisible meeting spaces greatly increase the library’s capacity for events and programs, while a MakerSpace allows for hands-on activities and a dedicated area in which to plan and create. The vibrant children’s discovery area encourages interactive play and learning. The first floor also features a drive-up window where customers can drop off materials and pick up holds (drive-through pick up of holds begins in March). A civic patio on the south side of the building provides a welcoming space for the community to gather.
