Cars, trucks, motorcycles, RVs. They’re such a huge part of our lives. While they may have little relevance to what we’re actually doing when we arrive, they can dictate a lot simply as conveyances. Here in Central Oregon, with limited public transit options, nearly everyone owns a vehicle. A vehicle describes something of our character, something about who we are as people - sometimes intentionally, and sometimes unknowingly. For instance, regardless of what car you have, the condition of that vehicle and its operation reflect on us. Is your car just something that gets you from point A to point B? Or is it an extension of your personality? Is yours working for you adequately, or is it time for you to trade in your vehicle for one that better meets your needs? Who are you going to take it to for repairs, and what factors are important to you in making that choice? These are questions we ask ourselves. Why does Bend have the highest Porsche per capita rate in the country? Why is Central Oregon one of the most popular places to RV in the country? And what is it that riders on two wheels are experiencing that make them so happy? These are the questions we will delve into for The Source’s inaugural issue of the Central Oregon Motor Guide. b

Subaru: Matt Thomas One day in the early 1900s, the water feeding the homestead farm of Bill “Papi” Thomas stopped flowing. When the irrigation district was formed in Gateway, near Madras, the water flooded the agency’s plains and consequently dried out other homesteaders nearby. Many farmers, like Thomas, were forced to find other means of supporting themselves. Papi, an enterprising and industrious man, moved into the city of Bend to find a way to provide for his family. The year was approximately 1920, and Papi found work selling Chevys. “A race was staged waging a motorized tractor and a horse, with the prize being a fifth of whiskey,” says Papi’s grandson and current GM of Thomas Sales & Service Matt Thomas. “The tractor won.” And the Thomas family has been selling cars on the high desert ever since. The origin story of the dealership cites 1937 as the beginning of Pat Thomas’ Chrysler dealership, the oldest new car dealership in Central Oregon. Pat founded the Subaru dealership in 1973, and was bought out by his sons in 1995. Matt Thomas, father of four and owner of a black and white kitten named Oreo Cookie, doesn’t wear a suit to work. Instead, he prefers the casual attire worn by a large number of Subaru customers, keeping an unassuming profile, and checking his

ego at the door. When he was younger, Thomas imagined he would work in international financing. He saw himself traveling the world and making big business deals. He attended the University of Oregon and came within 20 credits of graduating in business and marketing before diving headfirst into the auto industry because he enjoyed selling cars so much. The biggest struggle in the current chapter of the Thomas family story has been the loss of the Dodge dealership franchise, which was taken from them during the bankruptcy and then handed over to another local dealership in Bend. They’ve been using legal channels to try and get it back ever since. In his spare time, Thomas enjoys traveling and playing golf tremendously. He has a boat docked at Anacortes, though most of his travel is related to dealership business. Moreover, Thomas sees the automotive industry as his family’s legacy, as his children have now taken up the trade. His son Jake is working in sales, bringing the generational total to four, a trend he expects to continue. With this tradition and long history in Central Oregon, the Thomas’ bring relationship longevity to the consideration of customers when buying a vehicle. “We’re not trying to sell you one vehicle,” says Thomas. “The sales relationship lasts a couple of hours, but the service relationship can last a lifetime. We want to sell you 10 cars over the next 20 years.” b

Tale of a Vehicular Romance BY BRENNAN PURTZER

The relationship between a man and his car can be a lot like a relationship between a man and a woman. Sometimes we’re excited and all revved up. Other times, we’ve got to take things slow. Sometimes we’re appreciative, and sometimes we neglect. Volkswagen in particular has been a brand noted for driver enthusiasm, and I find that to be true. And so it was with great angst that, in 2011, I was forced to part with my 1985 VW Golf Diesel, a vehicle, which achieved more than 40 mpg, and was capable of hauling great quantities of things, including my entire life from San Diego to Enumclaw Washington. This was a vehicle I had nicknamed “The Camel” because I jokingly described the brown hatchback as a “beast of burden” that was capable of going long distances between drinks of liquid nourishment. But I gave her up, after replacing the entire suspension, putting in a new head block, as well as triple coating the entire frame with sound-deadening material, upgrading the speakers and receiver, and even adding a toggle switch to warm up her sometimes temperamental glow-plugs. I gave her up because I had taken an executive job, and I felt my suit-wearing self needed to “look the part” when it came to transportation. I traded The Camel for a technologically superior hybrid Honda Insight, which achieved as much as 60 mpg. I nicknamed the Honda “Kit” after the car in the David Hasselhoff’s 1980’s series, “Knight Rider.” Fast forward 4 years, and I’ve long since left my position in Washington, traveled the world and come back to the United States. And I find myself wanting, of all things, to drive my old Camel. So how does one go about finding an old vehicle, let alone reunite with it? First, I contacted the Oregon DMV to find the VIN for my old vehicle. They told me it had been registered out of state, and that the last record was from Idaho. But when Idaho

said they couldn’t locate it, the trail seemed to dim. However, a quick live chat on the CarFax website, which is intended to help car buyers call up data on vehicles they are considering purchasing, led me to the vehicle’s record, which showed it registered until 2014 in Montana. I ordered a vehicle registration record from the Montana Motor Vehicle Division, and received a copy of its most recent registration document. The document showed the VW’s license plate number, 0BAGAN. I decided to call the Montana MVD, and spoke with an agent on the phone about the issue. While he couldn’t tell me the name of the owner, he could confirm that the vanity plate reflected the owner’s last name. A quick internet search revealed the Bagan family of Missoula, who had relocated in recent years from Idaho. Soon it became clear that my primary target would be to make contact with a Mr. Michael Bagan. But how to reach him? After locating Mr. Bagan on Facebook, I wondered how to capture his attention, as his settings did not permit non-friends to contact him. To get around this, I found one of his friends, also living in Missoula, who also listed their place of employment. I called the friend’s worksite, and left a message that I was trying to get in touch with her friend. Hours later, Mr. Bagan called my phone and, however improbable the events connecting us were, we were able to discuss the car. Bagan had also developed a fondness for the vehicle which reminded him of the diesel rabbit his father had driven in his childhood. By this point, he had possessed the car longer than I had. He told of his long drives, and a blown hose situation he’d encountered. When I told him I wanted to buy the car back, he said he could only consider it under one condition… that I help him acquire another Volkswagen. This time, he wants a Westfalia van instead. Needless to say, I’m doing all I can to help him find one. b

Getting the best auto loan: Shop around to save more BY KLEBBETH GANUE

When shopping for a car, and deciding what you can afford, it makes as much sense to shop for your loan as it does to shop for the price on your car - it can cost nearly as much! Annual percentage rates (APRs) can chance from day-to-day, and a mere 2-point difference can save you as much as $500 over the course of a two-year loan. Also relevant are the terms of the loan, and the down payment requirement. Getting the loan before walking into the dealership puts bargaining power into your hands, and gives you flexibility. Try checking online and with local banks and credit unions. Credit Unions are non-profit and owned by their members, often providing lower-cost lending options than banks. Check them out! Chuck Smith: Central Oregon’s Jag man BY BRENNAN PURTZER

Couched behind a furniture store and an auto painting shop on Highway 20, you’ll find a narrow driveway leading up to a gated parking lot, featuring many classic Jaguars of spanning the past 50 years. Manning the shop is a white-haired, 73-year old mechanic with a lifetime of expertise repairing the iconic automotive from Coventry, England. “I’ve never been to England,” says mechanic Chuck Smith, of Chuck’s Auto Shop. “There’s nothing to see there, except the XJ13.” Smith refers to a priceless, one-of-a-kind Jaguar on display at the British Heritage Motor Centre, near Gaydon, England, which he’s dreamt of seeing for decades. Smith has been running his shop on the highway for 29 years, living in Bend since 1974, and specializing in Jaguar repairs since 1963. Originally from Anaconda, Montana, Smith has been married to his wife Elin for 29 years. Smith has had many hobbies over the years, including drag racing, waterskiing, cross-country skiing, slot car racing, RC car racing, and piloting. His current

hobby includes building and racing drag boats along with a team at the annual Haystack Reservoir CDBA event. Most seasons Smith’s team has won either first or second place. For decades Smith has been known as Central Oregon’s Jaguar specialist. He has repaired nearly every component on the vehicles, and completed several restorations over the years, such as his current project, a 1967 E-type. “Oh, I know Chuck,” said Neil Shelton, president of MonteShelton Jaguar in Portland. “We hear from him every once in a while when he gets stuck.” With such a long history in the area, being known for his specialty, and approaching his 74th year, Smith has been quietly searching for a successor. “I’m nearly middle aged now,” said Smith. “There have been a lot of guys who have shown promise, but then the interest goes away,” Smith said. “But I’m not ready to give up yet!” Chuck’s Auto Shop is located at 1775 US 20, in Bend.

Robberson Ford Mazda Lincoln: Jeff Robberson What may have once seemed like a natural progression for Jeff Robberson to have moved into the role of president of Robberson Ford, the story is actually a far more interesting story than one might assume. Little about it was natural or expected. From the time he was old enough to drive, Jeff Robberson made a point of not working at the Ford dealership owned by his father. “I think Dad was proud that I worked on my own,” Robberson said. He first worked on the Sunriver Resort Golf Course, and later with Hap Taylor’s construction company, working his own way through college. After receiving a business degree from Oregon State University, he attempted to “make it” in the big city. “I was really proud I was going to do this whole thing on my own. I went and moved into my grandfather’s basement in Seattle and started knocking on doors.” He ended up getting his first job in Vancouver, Washington, working at the order desk for a plastic piping company called Portco, before moving on to become the vice president of operations for Interstate Distribution Company near Seattle. There he had a successful career, well into the mid-’80s. Life and career seemed to be a settled question, until an evening when Jeff’s father, Gordon, came to visit Jeff and his wife Margi in Seattle. His father offered him a role at the dealership in his hometown of Bend. After some months of considering the proposal, he agreed to essentially restart his career, spending nearly a year at dealership training school, learning new skills. “I can tell you, my ego took a big hit,” Robberson says. Once at Robberson Ford Mazda, Jeff worked with a whole team of folks who had far more

experience in the automotive industry than he had. The team is still, in large part, intact, as Jeff is quick to brag about the fact that he currently has more than 34 employees who have logged more than 10 years at Robberson. Although the bright, spacious building housing Robberson Ford christened in 2014 is new, the employees inside have centuries of experience in the automotive industry. “We kind of walked around this new box,” he said. “But it’s just a building. I think one of the phenomenal things about this dealership is the people that work here. I feel extremely blessed. I’m the oldest manager, but I’m only fourth in seniority.” Robberson was humbled that the dealership had won the President’s Award during the past year, when the property was all torn up and staff was working out of trailers and port-a-potties. “I know why we won it—because everybody was so focused on taking care of the customers,” he says. “It’s like my dad used to say: anything that’s worth doing is worth doing to excess.” Robberson and Margi have no biological children, however many years ago they became the American family to a Slovakian exchange student named Miro, who has become an important part of their life. Miro now handles marketing for Robberson Ford Mazda. Miro joins the couple’s two pudelpointers, Bella and Blue, to make up the immediate family. Over the years, Robberson has become involved in the Deschutes County Commission for Children and Families and served as The United Way’s local campaign chair, as well as being involved with the Grandma’s House, Kids Center, and lending strategic assistance to the Boys & Girls Club. “Bend has been a phenomenal community and has been very rewarding to our family of employees,” he says. “It’s really a huge part of our DNA to participate and give back to this community, which has given us so much.” The Ford Focus on Childhood Hunger program has presented the Robberson Ford family with the opportunity to compete to raise as much peanut butter for area families as possible. Last year’s drive netted a mind-boggling 9,800lbs of the sticky stuff. Robberson Ford Lincoln Mazda is located at 2100 NE 3rd St. in Bend. b

Auto Kings: They’re not here to sell you a car It sounds counter-intuitive, but the folks at one of Bend’s mostactive, used-vehicle dealership says they’re “not here to sell you a car, they’re there to help you buy one.” Both Founder Bryan Toler and his sons Austin and Jeff, who co-manage the place, will tell you the same thing. “My job is to help guide you to something that works for you,” Austin says. “If it’s not on the lot, maybe we can put them in touch with someone else who can help them. Either way, I know I’ll be able to sell this car to somebody who needs it.” Bryan Toler started the used car dealership 8 years ago, and over the past year has handed it over to his three sons, Austin, Jeff, and Lance. “Every day at work is like a family reunion,” said Bryan. “Here my title is Dad.” Dad, it’s a title even some of the customers call him. Everything is friendly and informal at Auto Kings, where trust is easy—on both sides. The Auto Kings specialize in helping customers rebuild credit with responsible auto purchases. While they’ve been burned before, and they’re not dumb—the family just refuses to live in a world where they can’t trust their customers. Art Bleau, a two-time Auto Kings’ customer, is on his second truck from the Auto Kings. Bleau says he has returned because of the service provided by Auto Kings. “I looked around the other lots, but they’re friendly and I feel like you get the best deal,” he says. “I’ve sent a half a dozen or more people over here to buy cars and they’re still happy with them,” adding “it’s hard to buy a used car when you’re not sure of the people you’re buying from.” The Tolers usually stock between 50-100 cars, commonly selling more than 50 each month.

“Here in the eighth year, we’re starting to see referrals really driving the business,” Austin says. “People are referring because they’re happy with the service we’re providing.” A Facebook group called Pay it Forward Bend is a popular community to help people with few resources get access to things they need. Auto Kings was recommended by forum users because of their trustworthiness and their commitment to help address any initial problems their vehicles may have. “Because we have our own shop, I know $100 to me and my mechanic end up costing about $300-400 to the general public,” Austin says. “I’ve got my technician Chris over there working for me, I may as well be using him to help our customers.” It’s this kind of philosophy that has buyers coming back for their second, and even third cars. “Even though they sign for the vehicle ‘as-is’ we help them out for free because it’s the right thing to do,” Austin says. “These guys [the buyers] are incredible,” Austin says. “One of these guys, he bought a car from us like two years ago and loves it, sometimes he just drops by with burgers or wings and says ‘I knew you guys would probably be hungry—here you go!’” Auto Kings’ customers keep coming back even when they’re not vehicle shopping, to hang out, enjoy the environment, laugh, and tell stories. Says Austin, “We go above and beyond after the sale to make our customers happy because we understand that having a running vehicle can be life-changing and we hope it will affect other peoples’ lives in a positive way. It’s the circle of life.” Auto Kings is located on 3rd Street, across from Lithia Chevrolet. b

Kendall Auto Group: David Thompson Sometimes life can be unpredictable. Kendall Auto Group General Manager, David Thompson has always kept himself in great physical health. “I ski a lot,” he says. “About 40 days a year; it’s something I like to do with my kids.” Yet, Thompson, who also enjoys tennis and golf, did not anticipate that his daughter would be born with a congenital heart defect. In response, along with his wife, Jill, the Thompsons have taken up the cause of helping others in similar situations. “She’s been instrumental in creating the Children’s Heart Fund,” Thompson says. The fund raises money to provide testing through St. Charles Health System for high school athletes throughout Central Oregon, to see if they may suffer from undetected heart conditions. From Madras to Prineville, the fund the Thompsons helped launch has tested hundreds of high school athletes for heart conditions. The fund, which began several years ago, has blended in nicely with the mission of Kendall Cares, the charitable program

administered by the Kendall Auto Group, which purchased Carrera Motors of Bend about a year and a half ago. The Carrera dealership included four German auto makers: BMW, Porsche, Audi, and VW. At the time of the purchase, Thompson was the sales manager. After a time, he was promoted to general manager of the operation. Thompson and his wife of 16 years, Jill, and their two children have been living in Bend for 11 years. Prior to switching to BMW, Thompson worked on both sides of the Ford brand, working for the corporate branch before becoming the general manager at Robberson Ford of Bend. Through and through, he’s always been a car guy. “I still have my first car,” he says, “A 1973 VW Bug.” “It’s about 100 yards from here actually.” Thompson grew up in Tigard, and pursued a collegiate pathway that should satisfy every Oregonian. He received a bachelor’s degree in business and marketing from OSU, and an MBA in management and finance from UO. If you’re interested in a fine German car, or just taking one for a test drive, Kendall Auto Group is the place to do it. When you stop by, say hello to GM David Thompson. b

Central Oregon is Porsche’s home in America Anyone who’s been in Central Oregon long enough is bound to have seen, at one point or another, a very, very long line of Porsches driving together, noted for their stunning engineering and the huge smiles on the faces of the drivers. Several years ago, the local Porsche dealership claimed that Bend had the highest per capita Porsche ownership rate in the country. With more than 200 primary members and only 81,000 residents of Bend, those statistics reveal 2.5 Porsche’s per 1000 residents of Bend. However, many club members own multiple Porsches, meaning the saturation rate is likely much higher than that. The Porsche Club of Bend, known as the High Desert Club, was started in 2000, and currently has as many as 430+ peripheral members. When asked why Porsche ownership is so popular in Central Oregon, past Club President Mike Simmons said, “Porsche ownership has been on the bucket list for many retired folks. They have their savings, good roads, fun cars, and great weather here.” Indeed, Simmons’ favorite rides include the Highway 58, down through Oakridge and back through the Cascade Lakes. Simmons prefers 911s (along with about 50% of the club’s membership) however the club includes Porsche drivers of all stripes, with members behind the wheel of Caymans, Boxters, 16 | ISSUE 1 | CENTRAL OREGON MOTOR GUIDE

BY BRENNAN PURTZER

and Cayennes as well as the classic 356s. Club members engage in all kinds of activities. Zone Rep, Tim Hagner has been leading a drive through all 16 Porsche club regions. Over 15 days, he’s covering 4,600 miles with much fanfare along the way. Every third Wednesday, about 40-60 High Desert PCA members meet at “Club Carrera” near Bend’s Kendall Porsche dealership to plan rides and drives through Oregon’s wine country regions, the Willamette Valley, Walla Walla wine country, or even a recent tour to Yachats. Activities continue during the winter season. When roads aren’t suitable for events, the club meets for “cars & coffee “ to share their passions or host tech sessions. The club holds annual fundraisers, including raising money for teaching young drivers on slick driving safety courses. Last year they sent 60 kids to classes, bringing the total to about 200 kids they’ve served over the past dozen years. They also raised about $3,500 to provide scholarships to young adults for mechanical studies at COCC. All told, the club has had a significant presence here in the Central Oregon region, and their activities reflect the club’s motto, “it’s not just the cars, it’s the people,” said Simmons. You can read more about the Porsche Club of Bend at their website, highdesertpca.org b

Kendall Toyota/Scion: Robert Durfee, GM When he was 18 years old, a young Robert Durfee took a job washing cars at the local Toyota dealership in Bend. Twenty-two years later, Durfee has realized the dream of many a dealership detail artist, and settled in as the general manager of the franchise. “Basically, this is all I’ve ever done,” says a modest Durfee, who briefly worked as a teenage ski-bum at Mt. Bachelor and golf course attendant before committing his career to Toyota two decades ago. “I didn’t have a lot of money back then, so to get my ski pass I worked at the mountain.” Now a married father of four children and a few goldfish, Durfee spends the little free time he has working toward goals he shares with his children. His 16-year old son competes in football and track at Summit High School, and Durfee coaches football for his son’s team. Durfee, a 5th generation resident of Bend, is proud of the community he lives in and serves. His father worked in construction, while his mother was a homemaker, taking care of Robert and his three sisters. An outdoorsman by nature, Durfee enjoys taking his family on camping, fishing, hunting, and mountain-biking trips throughout the Central Oregon region. Asked how he would make the world better, Durfee replies, “The world’s a pretty great place. 99.9% of the people who live in the world are great people, and we’re more alike than we are different.” Durfee says he goes through life with his eyes wide open, always looking for ways he can be helpful to people. He says he gets his satisfaction from doing something nice for someone he can see needs a break, but not from receiving recognition for doing so. Holding the GM position at Kendall Toyota/Scion, he feels he gets a few chances to do that, either by helping a customer get the vehicle they need for their own goals, or by helping them restore their credit along the way. “We could live anywhere we want, but we choose to live in Bend because Bend is an unbelievable community and a great place to raise a family,” he says. “Many of the people here enjoy giving back to their community.” Durfee and Kendall Auto Group give back too. Through the Kendall Cares program, Durfee’s dealership and the rest of the Kendall Auto Group in Bend have raised tens of thousands of dollars for scholarships, The March of Dimes, and the fight against child abuse, since Toyota/Scion of Bend joined the Eugene-based Kendall Auto Group last July. If you’d like to know more about Kendall Cares, or say hello to Durfee, Kendall Toyota/Scion is located at 61430 S Highway 97 in Bend. b

Kendall really does care BY BRENNAN PURTZER

When the Kendall Automotive Group moved into the Central Oregon area in 2012, many in the region didn’t know a lot about the new company, even though the Kendall family has been selling cars in Oregon for over 75 years. Kendall, which now owns Bend’s Toyota/Scion dealership, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, Audi, and VW, has been operating in Southern Oregon since the early 20th century. The automotive group now owns dealerships in Idaho and Alaska as well. But Kendall doesn’t just sell cars. They have a large philanthropic organization called Kendall Cares, which focuses their community engagement efforts. Kendall Cares concentrates on education, health, veterans, and social service initiatives. Amy Newport is one of the team members that helped create the Kendall Cares program.“I’ve never worked for a company so supportive of the communities they are in,” says Newport. During Kendall’s recent Drive for Education, which is in its third year overall, although first year in Bend, $500,000 has been given to local schools through partnerships with school districts. Ten local high school seniors received $1,000 scholarships, and the grand prize winner also won a new Toyota Corolla during their very first Drive for Education Scholarship program in Bend. “Some of our programs, which are successful in one region, we then bring and expand this good idea to a new region,” says Newport. “In November, our Toyota dealership in Bend is hosting a March of Dimes fundraising event called High Heals for High Hopes,” she says. “This is an event that we have been thrilled to host at our Eugene Toyota store for the last three years, and we are so excited to help expand this fundraising event and help raise awareness in the Bend market.”Other Kendall Cares events include the Kendall Cares $30,000 community donation for local charities (where the community selects the charities which receive support), the 12 Days of Caring, and Christmas for Kids. Kendall Acura/Honda: Matt Bodine Matt Bodine, general manager at Kendall Acura/Honda, grew up in Grants Pass. “The one thing you learn as a young man working in the mill in Grants Pass is that you don’t want to work in a mill,” he says. Bodine, whose father worked the spreader machine at the mill, went to Grants Pass High School, his parents having relocated from Crescent City, California. Before beginning his career at Kendall, Bodine intended to follow a career as a teacher and an athletic coach, attending Willamette University in Salem. “The car industry was not on my radar – that’s for sure,” he says. Today, Matt enjoys working for a company that gives back to its community. He is particularly proud of the Kendall Cares foundation program. Matt has been with Kendall Auto Group for 21 years. “Kendall Cares is one of the big reasons I enjoy working here.”

A well-built and athletic man, despite 52 years of age, Bodine used to play golf, but now devotes as much of his free time as possible to practicing volleyball with his teenage kids. When he has time, he enjoys taking his wife of 26 years, Debbie, their kids, and their Havanese dog, Bandit, out on Oregon’s lakes in their Bayliner. Enjoying outdoor activities at every opportunity, he likes vacationing with the family in Hawaii. However, Bodine has a habit of getting seasick on the ocean currents, and so he usually limits his activities to those close to the shoreline. Matt enjoys 70’s music, and would do anything to attend a Boston, Foreigner, or Fleetwood Mac show, however his real love is supporting his University of Oregon Ducks; he has cheered for them through both good times and bad. “I remember the ‘Toilet Bowl’ back in the 80s,” he said. “I sat there through the whole thing, even when it was 0-0 and I was the only fan left in the stadium, it seemed.” Bodine can be found most days at Kendall Acura/Honda, located on Goodpasture Island Road in Eugene; stop in and say hello. b

Lexus/Kendall Luxury Brands: Rick Foster Rick Foster has had an interesting life and career. He was standing at the Honolulu International Airport in February of 1991, after spending seven years as a traveling radiology equipment salesman, thinking about his two-month-old son back at home in Oregon, when he told his wife, “I don’t want to do this anymore.” Foster decided he would come back home and find a different way to support his growing family. He has essentially been an anchor at Eugene’s Kendall Lexus building ever since. Now, along with his wife, Susan, and their four children— Hannah, Brandon, Jared, and Megan—family and friends make up his world. He smiles proudly, and cannot help but brag about his sons and daughters. Born in 1958 at an air force base in Japan, son of a Japanese mother and an American airman, he moved to Travis AFB in 1961. His most distinct image of Travis is of the black skies above the base, caused by the constant launching of surveillance aircraft during the long years of the Cold War with Russia. However, Foster considers himself to have grown up along the southern Oregon Coast in Coos Bay and Brookings, which part of him still considers home.

He started working at the Cannery at age 14, expertly separating the Coho and Chinook salmon species and impressing the “crusty old sailors” with the quality of his work as a teenage boy. “My mother also worked at the cannery,” he says. “I was so proud of how hard she worked.” After some time working as a logger in the forest, he began studying at the University of Oregon in 1978, but found it extremely hard to balance his school with his need to support himself. He dreamt of becoming an athletic trainer before he started to sell radiology equipment and, eventually, automobiles in the early 90s. Foster values the very close friends he has nearby in Eugene, and though he enjoys 70’s rock music, his social activities are dictated by the consensus of his close friends, whose companionship is worth more than anything else. Also important are the activities he supports and has been involved with; he’s a Christmas for Kids board member, and the Oakway Concert Series is also supported by the Kendall Automotive Group. Foster’s hobbies include travel, fishing, target shooting, and he is eagerly awaiting his first grandchild at any minute. Rick Foster is an expert on all of Kendall’s Luxury brands. If you have interest in a new premium vehicle, don’t hesitate to call him at 541-335-4208. b

Kendall Mercedes-Benz: Paul Kincannon - Service Manager Paul Kincannon was born with a heart for Central Oregon. However, he may have never realized it if he hadn’t met his wife, who was born and raised here, while he was working in San Diego. Now the service manager at Kendall Mercedes-Benz of Bend, Kincannon got his start in the auto industry in sunny Southern California, and has a total of 15 years in the business. Now a father of two, he enjoys hiking, biking, and water/snow sports, and just about anything Central Oregon can throw at him. “We have only scratched the surface,” he says. “I’m sure as the kids get older the sports and outdoor activities will grow as well.” Kincannon says he’s inspired by the great team at Kendall Mercedes-Benz, and the world-class engineering of Mercedes-Benz cars, which he proudly points out, were the very first automobiles. “They invented the automobile and have not looked back,” he says. “The company’s history of safety innovation, technology, performance, and styling is second to none.”

Engine Maintenance tips FROM AUTO VALUE PARTS STORES, SUBMITTED BY

HAPPY DANES AUTO REPAIR Motor vehicles are typically either the first or second largest asset a person owns. Therefore, it makes sense to keep them in the best possible shape. Often maintaining a vehicle properly can cost far less than allowing it to degrade, and will certainly make a big difference in the resale value of the car, truck, RV, or motorcycle. Here are some general tips to maintaining the heart of the beast, the vehicle’s engine. Change oil and filter at least every 6000 miles. For longterm ownership, stop and go driving, and tougher driving conditions, change oil and filter every 3000 miles. Check timing belt at 20,000 miles and replace it at 30,000 miles. Change air filter every 10,000 miles. Dirt entering the engine through the intake manifold is as damaging as dirty oil. Adjust valves on overhead cams every 20,000 miles. Change spark plugs every 20,000 miles. Change spark plug wires every 30,000 miles. Change PCV valve every 30,000 miles. Change rotor every 20,000 miles. Check idle speed every 20,000 miles. Change crank case ventilation filter every 30,000 miles. b

Using lightweight vehicles for outdoor recreation access gives you more time to actually have fun. Everyone wants to feel like they can defy gravity on demand, fly into the wind at will, or reach an ultimate destination after a committed struggle. Many prefer using specially designed tools with cranks, wheels, levers, and springs for land, or finely tuned boards for water or snow. I have found that the most of us have to load up the rig, ride the chairlift, or catch a shuttle to get up to the top, so we can get more than one, long, glorious lap through that section of watershed. Nowadays, is there a more timeeffective and lower-impact way to do it? The Power Sports industry has responded to changes in how we recreate, by making vehicles that are applicable to today’s outdoor recreation enthusiast. Here is an overview of the vehicles and their applications in outdoor recreation.

Oregon Festival of Cars

The Oregon Festival of Cars returns to Broken Top Club on Saturday, September 19. The festival presents well over 100 special interest cars of every vintage, make, and country of origin. This year’s theme is The Need for Speed. What could be more near to our hearts (and other body parts) than the grandest elixir of all time—speed! The need for speed has been with every one of us all our lives. How many times have we thought that fast enough just wasn’t good enough? But we’re not just featuring 200+ mph supercars. We’ll have cars that have a little of that extra something that has no real function other than making them even just a little bit faster than the plain model. Today, when we are so concerned about cars’ practicality and energy efficiency, it’s a great opportunity to consider cars whose very existence is based simply upon the pleasure of driving them. The festival cars are not intended to be one’s daily mode of transportation, and exalt style and performance over utility. They are extravagances, for sure, which constitutes much of their appeal. They also reveal parts of the lifestyles of their owners. There is more however, than just looking at shiny cars. Northwest jazz legend Dan Balmer and his trio will play throughout the day, and food and drink are available with numerous vendors displaying their products. Again this year, free on-site parking will be available at Broken Top Club, although spectators are asked to donate to the Humane Society to reward their efforts at procuring and managing the parking area. We are pleased to have The Humane Society of Central Oregon as our beneficiary again this year. Participant registrations will be taken until September 16. Sign up to show your car on Saturday, or join us for the entire weekend’s festivities! Drives, dinners, awards, and a whole lot of fun. Registration information is available on the festival website, www.oregonfestivalofcars.com/registration.php. The Oregon Festival of Cars runs September 19, from 10 -3. Admission is $5, free for those under 16. Website: www. oregonfestivalofcars.com b 28 | ISSUE 1 | CENTRAL OREGON MOTOR GUIDE

Vespa Portland: Paul Henry Somewhere, while serving in Vietnam, Paul Henry learned to question authority. He’d grown up idolizing his grandfather, and studying to become a lawyer. When he returned from Southeast Asia, Henry took a more immediate approach to being alive. Though two decades removed from a career in adventure travel, Henry looks just as likely today, at 67, to don a large pack and dive into a South American jungle. “My wife Maggy and I met in Peru, in 1980, at an adventure travel company where she worked,” Paul says. “Up until about the age of 35, it was a great time to be in the industry.” However, Henry doesn’t find much time for adventuring these days, with a blossoming scooter business in the northwest corner of Portland. After acquiring Vespa Portland in 2012, he’s grown not only his flagship business, but become a leading dealer of sidecar Ural bikes, as well as Piaggio, Genuine, and Sym brands. Henry is not your average boss. He endorses team-building group activities such as after-hours berry picking adventures, and turns his store into a monthly barbershop event complete with haircuts, whiskey, cigars, and Sinatra. In short, Henry’s everything you ever wished your grandfather had been.

As the son of an Army Colonel, Henry grew up as a military brat between the East Coast and Germany. From his career in outdoor adventure tours, he and his Peruvian wife founded a company importing Peruvian Alpaca sweaters. Eventually he found his way to becoming a CPA, sired two children, and acquired a black and brown manx cat named Oliver. His son Matt, is a gold-medal winning, professional juggler, and his daughter Marianne is currently serving the U.S. Peace Corps in Guatemala. When he’s not overseeing his business, Henry is passionate about gardening. However, it’s clear that he enjoys activities that make him feel virile and alive. Along with scootering, Henry’s hobbies include attending live storytelling performances and poetry slams. As a small business owner, Henry has often been approached by worthy causes seeking donations. He recently donated a vehicle to be sold at auction for the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital fundraising event to help raise money for children with leukemia. Though he cannot help everyone, he says he tries to help as much as he can. “Children deserve a shot at life,” he says. Vespa Portland is Central Oregon’s local Vespa dealership, and they do their best to make arrangements to help customers located in the C.O. area with their needs. Stop by and say hello to Paul when you’re in Portland, or call to make an arrangement to test ride a Vespa. b

Vespa Milwaukie: Bill Place There’s nothing typical about Bill Place and the Vespa dealership he’s built in the Portland suburb of Milwaukie. “Our motto is, we work harder than the competition,” says Place. Over the past 8 years, Vespa Milwaukie has grown to become one of the highest-volume Vespa dealerships on the West Coast through Place’s wholesale automotive background and their aggressive pricing regiment. “I was driven to Vespa because of their brand’s quality reputation and premium products, along with their history of customer satisfaction,” he says. Place started his dealership in 2008, after a long career with Toyota and Ford Motor Co. He and his family moved to the west coast in 1995, after growing up in Connecticut, having numerous corporate moves along the way. His colorful childhood saw him emancipated at 15, supporting himself with help from his grandparents and summer employment. Place has carried his work ethic to this day. The pace of business is maintained during the wetter seasons by supplementing the

Vespa business with automotive wholesaling and other revenue streams. He is the ultimate multitasker, even filling truck bedliner installation orders and signing paperwork while simultaneously conducting interviews. Married for 38 years to his wife Shannon, Place has two grown children and a Welsh terrier to round out his family unit. Place finds his release playing tennis two to three times per week, and maintaining his house, lawn, and garden. He has also assured his Vespa Milwaukie dealership has a solid community footprint. “We support various children’s organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club,” Place says. “We help many of the local kids here with their dance clubs, cheerleading, and sports fundraisers, as well as other educational and literacy programs.” As a business, there’s another service they offer: delivery. The team at Vespa Milwaukie has two trucks they use to deliver Vespas sold in Central Oregon, Seattle, and other locations. You can’t enjoy a Vespa if you can’t get your hands on one. With their delivery service, Vespa Milwaukie makes that possible. b

Harley Davidson: Brandon Nash

Sometimes when opportunity knocks, a smart man does what he needs to do to answer the door. When the opportunity to become a partner in a Harley-Davidson franchise, Wildhorse, in Bend, Oregon knocked on Brandon Nash’s door in Phoenix Arizona, he moved to a place he’d never been and took a gamble on Central Oregon; he rolled a pair of sixes. Now, four years later, he is very glad he did. An avid snowboarder, he’s been shredding Mt. Bachelor and enjoying the incredible motorbike rides offered by Central Oregon on the Cascade Lakes Highway, the Crater Lake Loop, or the incredible McKenzie Highway. “You know, 97% of the people can’t understand what 3% of people are getting out of life,” says Nash, quoting a popular adage in the motorcycle world. Now married, and a father to his 8-year old stepdaughter as well as the owner of Victorian bulldog named Tyke, Nash had the luxury of growing up in the motorcycle industry. With his father having been a store owner, Nash has been around and riding impressive motorcycles since he was 15. There was a time growing up, when as a middefender on the soccer field, he considered a future playing for the American National Soccer Team, but he’s still pretty

happy with the way things have turned out. High on his priority list is the idea of giving back. Wildhorse gave away a 2015 H-D Street Glide at an auction on August 8, with all the event proceeds going to Central Oregon’s Veterans outreach. The dealership also invites special needs individuals to experience the motorbikes every week, and raises funds for the relay for life. They host both spring and winter events aimed at raising money to feed Thanksgiving dinners to hungry families and purchase Christmas presents for needy children. Last year, they sold over 1,700 Christmas trees to raise money for presents. Nash is also an NFL football fan, especially of the Green Bay Packers. His aunt and uncle from Wisconsin hooked him on the sport early as a child by sending him Packers gear on Christmases and birthdays. One of his greatest football memories was attending the NFC championship game in 2009, as the Arizona Cardinals secured their spot in the Super Bowl that year. “We’re currently stacked as a dealership, as far as customer service is concerned,” Nash says. He pointed to statistics that show the buying experience at Wildhorse is ranked approximately 20% better than the national average (9.8 to 8.2). Our customers are really important to us, and we pass that on by remembering them, Nash says. “99% of the time, when I meet you and we have some sort of conversation or connection when you walk back in, I’m going to remember your name.” b

2016 HarleyDavidson Electra Ultra Glide Despite its size, the Electra Ultra Glide is an easy maneuvering machine. The bike can be tweaked to accommodate riders under 5’7”, and provides a natural riding position for smaller individuals. The air-cooled, v-twin engine makes a great touring bike, and a thoroughbred HarleyDavidson through and through.

Get behind the wheel at Oregon Raceway Park BY KYLE NADEAU, ASSISTANT TRACK MANAGER

Close your eyes and imagine a serene landscape. Flowing wheat fields blowing like waves through the soft, rolling hills of Central Oregon. As the sun slowly rises, burning off the morning dew, you hear the first BRRAAAPPPP of a race engine firing at the newly constructed Oregon Raceway Park. Located in Grass Valley, a tiny 164-person village about one hour southeast of The Dalles, ORP is one of the longest and most challenging racetracks in the Pacific Northwest. Yet, once you drive this ribbon of race track, all others will pale in comparison. Thrill seekers from around the world flock to this premier racing facility with its 2.34 mile, 16-turn layout. Most incredible is the 400 feet of elevation change and the signature half pipe, which is a series of 18-degree banked turns that complete this automotive roller coaster. The track is certified to run both directions, clockwise and counter-clockwise, to insure you’ll always be challenged. Everything with a motor is represented proudly in the paddock on a given day; cars, motorcycles, and karts. A Ferrari is parked right next to a 1990 Mazda Miata; that’s the beauty of ORP, you don’t need to be a millionaire playboy to enjoy this place. It’s all about the passion, not about the paycheck. The track is located two hours from Bend and two and a half hours from Portland, and is guaranteed to make you skip out of work early to have fun. You’ll notice a lack of barriers throughout the circuit.

“ORP is very safety conscious” says Operations Manager, Bill Murray. The track surface is the same material they use for NASCAR, and has ample run-off room to avoid destroying your prized possession. Instructors are available to help ensure that you stay on track if needed. There are various ways to get you on the track. You can sign up with local clubs that rent the facility, or you could join the ORP Club and have access to over 20 private track days. Want to come watch the racing? Most events are free to spectators, so bring the family out and spend a day watching some great racing action. Think back to your childhood; remember your dreams of driving a race car around a track at high speeds? Now open your eyes and your dreams have come true. See you at the track!
