A guide to drinking and snacking in Central Oregon

We’ve all heard about drinking’s demise of late. It’s true, there are more sober curious folks out there, and others who are simply cutting back on their alcohol consumption for myriad reasons. Still, there are plenty of people who are sticking with the time-honored tradition of our forebears — we’ve been downing fermented beverages for more than 10,000 years. What we do know is, that to each their own. And thanks to those N/A drinkers, there are even more options than ever in Central Oregon for drinking — and snacking — your days away. Here’s to happy hour and family-friendly outings, concoctions with less booze or cozy digs to quench your thirst. Whatever your preference, we’d like to toast you!

SHOP, SIP AND SNACK

Austin Mercantile offers drinks, small plates, live music and home goods in Southwest Bend

Story and photos by Skylor Young

Flatbread, a glass of wine and the harmony of laughter, conversation and live music: If this sounds like your ideal happy hour, you’ll find it all and more at Austin Mercantile. This coffee, wine and beer bar flies slyly under the radar because of its off-the-beaten-path location in the Brookswood Meadow Plaza on the edge of Deschutes River Woods. But you wouldn’t know it once you’re inside. It’s bustling with a where-everybodyknows-your-name vibe — the neighborhood’s Cheers but with mountain-town flair. And if you’re new to the scene, as I once was, it’s an easy place to stick around long enough for everyone to learn your name because the ambiance is incredibly warm and inviting. Sink into the brown leather couch in front of the fireplace with a beer and bruschetta. Feel the sun on your face while you eat lemon hummus and a caprese salad on a bar stool in front of a wall of windows, or share a charcuterie plate with friends at the community-style picnic tables. Prefer to sit in the fresh air with a fire and some meatballs marinated in marinara? Great, the heated patio area is ready and waiting.

Or perhaps — and this is what makes this place so unique — you’d like to do a little shopping while you snack on some olives. Austin Mercantile’s got you covered for that, too. The shelves on the chic, clean, white walls are filled with home decor and gifts that owner Kate Saffell sources based on “what I would want to have in my own home if it doesn’t sell.” Which makes me think her home must be gorgeously curated (akin to An-

thropologie’s home goods section) with gold measuring spoons and wooden cutting boards, handmade glasses, Peruvian pillows, baskets, frames, plates and prints.

Kate, along with her husband John and all the participating locals, celebrate happy hour Tuesday through Saturday from 4 to 7pm. With a red and white wine, plus two beers on draft, the drinks are a dollar off, and the small plates, prepared in-house by Kate, are only available during these hours, relatively speaking. Being the neighborhood Cheers where people are the priority, Kate warmly shares that “we close at 7ish. If somebody comes in and I’m able to make them something, I’m always happy to do it.” While the menu may shift from time to time, the focus remains consistent: easy eats to grab with your glass of wine or beer. The flatbread is one I recommend you don’t pass up — it’s made on the spot with homemade dough and fresh ingredients. (This week, it was chicken, red onion and fresh cilantro — delightful.) For a little entertainment, you can also find live music here every Thursday and Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30pm, with local singer/songwriters like Jared McComas, Jason Burky and Evan Mullins filling the space with their sounds. SOBER CURIOUS? BEND'S GOT YOUR BACK

Bend boasts a growing selection of nonalcoholic social spaces

Dry January,” a term used to indicate a break from drinking, may be transcending beyond a popular month-long challenge. In recent years, studies have shown that younger people are drinking less and becoming more “sober curious,” a movement prompting people to be more mindful of their alcohol consumption.

According to a Gallup poll from August 2023, 62% of adults under 35 said they drink, down from 72% two decades ago. Local mocktail lounges and bars invite people to get out and be social without the temptation of alcohol, while still offering a sense of craftsmanship and flavor for customers.

Hosmer, in the Waypoint Hotel, is located along Third Street in east Bend. The bar has several craft mocktail options, which people can add alcohol to if they desire. While the bar sees a mix of locals and guests staying at the hotel, it likes to offer something for everyone, including zero-proof beers and spirits. According to Hosmer bartender Stephen, the most popular mocktails include classic recipes, like a spicy margarita and a smokey old-fashioned, with N/A spirits.

“I’ve been in the industry for over 20 years, and in the last couple years, after going out and being sober and trying to get back into going out, hanging

out, I noticed a lot of, even the new bars, their ‘mocktail’ menu is kind of a cop-out. Typically, it’s like this little, tiny corner, and it’s like CBD sodas and lemonade or something that just doesn’t have any effort to it,” owner Mike Aldridge told the Source in June.

Another local option is The Dez, an alcohol-free cocktail lounge that operates on select nights out of the coffee bar Palate on Colorado Avenue. Owner Corrine Coxey wanted to create a space to go out at night that wasn’t based around alcohol. The drinks at The Dez aren’t just juices and sodas, Coxey explained. They have adaptogens, herbs and ingredients that can benefit people in a positive way. Coxey describes it as a place for people to go out, listen to music and make meaningful connections.

“We had a woman last night that came in and she was pregnant, and she was just so excited that she could get a fun drink and go out with friends. It’s just offering something [to] that community that wasn’t previously there,” Coxey told the Source Weekly.

Gigi’s is another great nonalcoholic bar for those looking to abstain from drinking. Gigi’s, operating out of The Pantry on Newport Avenue, is open on Fridays and Saturday and invites folks to try nonalcoholic versions of classic cocktails and “seasonally inspired herbal elixirs.”

FEELING SNACKY FOR SOME SEAFOOD?

The Hook & Plow’s locally sourced, seasonal happy hour’s got you covered

Dissect the name of The Hook & Plow and it’s clear that this restaurant specializes in dishes that fall into two categories: surf and turf. A bright, airy space full of blonde wood located in The Hixon off Century Drive, the Hooked on Happy Hour menu dives into the former, offering an array of seafood delights — from oysters on the half shell and diver scallops to ahi tuna and a hearty chowder.

The server brought over glasses of refreshing, complimentary lemon-cucumber water while I perused the happy hour choices, deciding to start with a round of three oysters. On this day, the oysters were harvested from Netarts Bay on the Oregon coast near Tillamook. Always sourced from Oregon or Washington, you can expect to find Puget Sound-grown Rucos or Hama Hamas from the Hood Canal on other days.

Shortly thereafter arrived the rest of the seafood-forward order including a pair of Mesoamerican-inspired dishes: tostadas and tacos. The tostada is a mashup of Hawaiian, Japanese and south of the border flavors with a deep, ruby-colored ahi tuna set against green guacamole and onions, flecked with black sesame seeds and a tamari sauce, all sitting on a crisp tostada. If you’re a poke and guac fan, you might want to double your order. The tempura fish taco featured a lightly breaded rockfish from the Oregon coast on a soft corn tortilla with a muddled salsa roja paste, topped with micro cilantro and a pretty purple radish.

The aforementioned seafood chowder was a standout that chef Ryan Ohmert says took him “six years to get right.” Topped with thin curls of grated Grana Padano cheese, it’s a bit

of a kitchen sink soup that ensures no fresh seafood scraps go to waste in his eatery; a dish that tastes exactly like a chowder should — filling and warm. Often a blend of halibut, ocean clams and British Columbian salmon, the base mirepoix (diced celery, brilliant orange carrots, onions) was rich and featured the additions of potatoes, bacon and the coup de grâce: chewy sourdough croutons that remained crunchy even after soaking in the creamy soup.

The Plow options at happy hour are more limited, but there is a chef’s charcuterie board as well as two types of fries. Opting for the more complex furikake fries, these were served in a cast iron skillet, with organic ketchup and a mustard aioli, and topped with a light layer of Grana Padano cheese. The fries were perfectly crisp and the Japanese seasoning a novel touch.

Naturally, there are drink specials too with $6 Wild Roots cocktails on special, but I washed it all down with a pear hot toddy, which was lager hued, subtly cinnamony, fruity and very comforting.

In everything The Hook & Plow does, “My thing is sustainability as well as ethical practices,” Ohmert says. He buys beef from Painted Hills and looks for products that are certified humane. Coming up on a year and half in business here in Bend, Ohmert’s fresh-focused, locally sourced menu changes seasonally so you’ll have plenty of reasons to return with the seasons. SW

POURING LIGHT

Low-proof cocktails for a mindful sip

Now that Dry January is behind us, you might be taking a moment to rethink your drinking habits. Maybe you’ve fallen for the art of mindful sipping, or maybe you just want to sample a few cocktails without going overboard. Whatever your reason, low-proof cocktails are a solid choice for keeping things balanced without giving up alcohol entirely. These “sessionable” drinks — made with lighter ingredients like fortified wines, amaro, beer and liqueurs — deliver all the flavor without the usual punch.

Why Choose Low-Proof?

Balance and Enjoyment: Low-proof cocktails allow you to pace yourself while still enjoying the social and sensory aspects of drinking.

Flavors First: With less alcohol, the nuanced flavors of the ingredients can truly shine. Think of sherry’s nutty richness or Lillet’s citrus-forward elegance.

A Healthier Alternative: While not nonalcoholic, these drinks are a middle ground, offering a mindful option for those seeking moderation.

Low-Proof Staples to Have on Hand

Vermouth: A versatile fortified wine that’s perfect for spritzes or simply enjoyed over ice with a twist of citrus.

Sherry: Dry styles like fino or manzanilla are crisp and refreshing, while sherries such as cream or moscatel add a touch of sweetness.

Amaro: Bitter liqueurs like Aperol, Cynar, Campari or Montenegro provide depth and complexity.

Flavorful Liqueurs: Options like St-Germain (elderflower), Cointreau (orange) or Crème de Cassis (blackcurrant) can add a burst of sweetness and aroma.

Beer: Beer might not be something you always think of adding to a cocktail but light and flavorful beers, like wheat beers, sours or lagers, can add effervescence and depth to any drink. Think beer-based shandies or a refreshing Radler.

Sparkling Additions: A splash of soda water, tonic or Prosecco can elevate any low-proof creation.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY HAPPY HOURS

While Bend has plenty of food truck lots and pubs open to families, these places stand out with dedicated play areas for little and big kids

Lifty’s on Chandler Avenue, just off Mt. Washington Drive and across from Skyline Park, is an ideal spot to hang out with kids while still feeling like an in-the-know adult. Opened in March 2022 by local Chris Justema, the restaurant includes a large beach volleyball court tucked away on the side of the patio, which can be reserved online for $30 an hour. When not reserved, kids are often found shoeless, running in the sand and playing with sand toys from home. Just past the volleyball court is another dedicated game zone often set up for cornhole. The patio also boasts a ping-pong table, multiple large, open fire pits to gather around and plenty of space heaters around tables so you can soak in the mountain views in warmth on chilly nights — or days.

The lounge, opened last year by celebrity chef Brian Malarkey and his brother, James, offers a happy hour from 4 to 5pm on weekdays. While kids are welcome inside, they’ll likely have more fun outdoors in the Kids Camp area, which hosts a large canvas tent with a play kitchen, bean bag chairs and games inside to explore alongside firepits for roasting s’mores.
