Neal Tire & Auto Service ‌Neal Tire & Auto Service has been known as a one stop auto shop with fast, friendly service for the past 90 years. Since 1925, Neal Tire & Auto Service has been employee-owned and operated. They take serving our customers very seriously. Their technicians provide a range of auto repairs including brakes, belt and hose repair, oil changes and transmission service. They also carry a range of passenger and specialty tires, from AG & ATV tires, to tires for your trailer, golf cart, OTR or Industrial vehicle. Because of their fierce commitment to customer satisfaction, over 80 percent of their sales are from repeat business. With every tire sold, they offer mounting at no charge, free pressure checks, a 30 day tire exchange, and life time balance and tire rotation at no charge. “This is a great benefit for the customer,” said A.J. Carr, manager. “Customers come first. We do what we need

to do to take care of them.” Proper tire maintenance can protect your investment by extending the life of your tires. Checking them regularly is important. “Checking tire pressure, rotating your tires, balancing your tires, and choosing the right set of replacement tires based on safety and handling will all contribute to consistent performance,” Carr said. Stop in any time and a Neal technician will check your pressure to ensure proper inflation. “Under inflation can lead to excess heat, uneven tire wear, and decreased braking and handling capabilities, which may cause structural failures like blowouts and tread separation,” said Carr. “Properly inflated tires will maximize tread life, improve handling, and increase fuel efficiency and overall driver safety.” Routine tire rotation is also important to equalize and enhance front-to-rear and side-to-side tire wear. “Properly inflated tires will optimize

the ride quality of your vehicle and increase longevity of your tires,” Carr said. “Proper air allows you to be safer and keep the traction.” Under inflation will also give you a slow stopping and maneuvering response. Out-of-balance tires may be detected in bumps that become more noticeable at higher speeds. Balancing tires is necessary during initial installation and during a remount. Carr also recommends installing new tires in sets or pairs. The addition of one new tire can cause instability. Partially worn tires should be moved to the front of the vehicle. Paying attention to your tires is important. “Watch for signs of punctures, embedded objects, cracks, and bulges,” Carr said. “Always keep a spare tire, and make sure it’s properly inflated. You never know when you’re going to need it.” By taking proper care of your tires, be safe in all road conditions, have better

fuel economy, and extend tire life, which will positively impact the environment. This attention to detail is just one way that employee owned Neal Tire is committed to excellent customer service. Their experienced technicians, are continuously receiving training from different manufactures on the latest products and technology. They also sell tires for passenger cars, light trucks, SUVs, agriculture, commercial vehicles, trailers, ATVs, golf cart, and earthmoving vehicles. Blend Tea and Crepe Lounge ‌Originally from Taipei City, Taiwan, Ming Wei Huang operated a successful crepe business in Virginia before relocating to Carbondale and opening Blend Tea and Crepe Lounge in 2011. The menu includes tea, slushes and smoothies, along with sandwiches and desserts made with crepes. Many flavors of tea are available, including hot or cold. A specialty is Bubble Tea. Bubble Tea, also known as pearl milk tea, is a Taiwanese tea-based drink. Most bubble tea recipes contain a tea base which is mixed or shaken with fruit or milk. Chewy tapioca balls and/or fruit jellies are often added. When the tea is shaken, bubbles rise to the top, creating a foam, hence the name Bubble Tea. Tea choices include: Shaken Ice Tea with Bubble or Jelly (tapioca pearls or small Jell-O cube); Yogurt Slush, a yogurt drink blended with any flavor; Ice Milk Tea, freshly brewed select Black Tea blended with any flavor over ice or with Bubble or Jelly. Signature Teas include: Hot Rose/ Lavender Hot Rose/Lavender Milk, tea

and cream blended with a sweet flavor and uplifting aroma Ice Coffee Milk Tea w/Coffee. Seasonal flavors like peppermint and hot pumpkin pie and chocolate cinnamon milk tea are also available. The Ice Green Tea with Yogurt drink is freshly brewed green tea blended with yogurt. Ice Passion Fruit Green Tea and freshly brewed select Black Tea with hot milk and any flavor is also available. All drinks are customizable by choosing your tea, a flavor and Bubble or Jelly. Watch for new slushy flavors like taro, Japanese Matcha and nonalcoholic Pina Colada. The Blend Tea and Crepe Lounge also serves smoothies made with fresh bananas and strawberries. According to Huang, crepes seemed like a

natural addition to the menu. “We wanted to serve Bubble Tea and find something to be a good combination with the tea,” said Huang. “We wanted something lighter and healthier.” Crepes, which originated in France, are very thin, pancake like “shells”, which can be filled or topped with a variety of toppings. The sweet or savory crepes are a perfect, light snack, lunch or evening dinner. Savory fillings include ham, turkey, egg, roast beef, cheese with spinach, sun dried tomato, mushrooms and roasted red pepper, giving customers a vegetarian option. Sweet Crepes also have a variety of filling including, Nutella, chocolate, peanut butter, honey or Chestnut spread. Fruit options include banana or strawberry. You can mix the

fillings and even add ice cream. All items offered at the Blend Tea and Crepes are price friendly. The crepes run from $3-6. “It is unique,” said Huang. “Its good food on a budget and it is healthier.” Along with great food at an affordable price, the Blend Tea and Crepe Lounge offers a relaxing environment. Huang likens the atmosphere at to a coffee shop. “You can get a quick lunch in a relaxing area,” he said. “You can visit with friends enjoy the free Wi Fi, study or discuss business. There is no loud music.” The Blend Tea and Crepe Lounge can even save you money with their rewards card. When you load $20 in the card, your card is credited for $24. It likes 20 percent off your purchases. Huang says he enjoys operating a fun and unusual experience at Blend Tea and Crepe Lounge. “We wanted to introduce the tea culture to this area,” Huang said. “We’re bringing a lifestyle and a cultural influence to Carbondale”.

Our mission is to deliciously and enthusiastically inspire the Southern Illinois community to blend together through healthy, imaginative, and value priced food and drinks in a relaxing and modern atmosphere.

Central Hospital For Animals

Central Hospital For Animals (CHFA) is a full service facility owned by Dr. Gordon Rhine. Fresh off of his residency at University of Illinois, Dr. Rhine began a partnership at CHFA in 1975 until 1994, where he and his wife, Sue Ella Rhine, became the sole owners. Many talented doctors have worked and trained here over the years. Dr. Richard Jefferson has been on board since June, 1989; Dr. Kim Talley became an associate in June of 1996; Dr. Laura Portee in December of 1998; Dr. Richard Harper in December 1998, Dr. Ellen McNitt in March 2006; Dr. Libby Ownby in December 2012; and Dr. Collin Rhine in 2013. CHFA has expanded from its Herrin location to include Harrisburg, Carbondale, and its most recent satellite facility, in Marion. All hospitals contain a full laboratory and pharmacy, offer outpatient appointments, and perform routine surgeries. The main facility in Herrin has top of the line equipment such as digital radiography, ultrasound, therapy laser and surgical facilities for CO2 laser and dentistry. This equipment allows the hospital to provide a quick and detailed diagnosis with compassionate

and skilled treatment. CHFA proudly provides cutting-edge procedures combined with twenty-four hour emergency service, early morning drop-off, and late night appointments. Furthermore, the Carbondale and Marion facility have a full-service grooming salon and daycare to allow your pet a day of pampering. CHFA offers a variety of services including wellness check-ups, senior pet services, routine and orthopedic surgeries, dental care, therapeutic laser care, reproductive services and exotic pet care. We are always looking for new ways to expand our services to accommodate our pet’s growing needs! Over the years, CHFA has ascertained new and fun ways to promote our services and staff while giving back to our surrounding communities. We began hosting and sponsoring special events such as This Able Veteran 5K Event, SIU Homecoming Tailgate (GO DAWGS!), Harley Davidson Little Tykes Event, Rural King Vaccine Clinics, SI Miner’s Bark in the Park (GO MINERS!), Marion Community Day, and many others. Our biggest event to date is our annual Pet Health Festival and Kid’s Day.

They are a family-owned business whose emphasis is to provide the healthiest food available at the most reasonable price. “With our enthusiasm for delicious food, we began a journey almost 10 years ago to find a loving way to deliver the best products at the lowest possible prices,” says Jennifer Pellow, Co-Owner and Store Manager. This includes a commitment to hand-selecting each product to ensure it does not contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs.) TSM is renowned for its organic bakery and deli. “We offer amazing fresh German bread baked in the traditional manner.” The deli is a favorite for people wanting a quick and healthy lunch made from the same organic ingredients that are sold in the store. They sell locally grown organic produce and meats as well as products from local artisans including jewelry, organic skin care and more. Their mission is to help people realize that healthy food isn’t a luxury, it’s

TSM offers several products to save their customers money, like a laundry soap mix that makes 5 gallons of natural laundry soap for just $10. “We hope we can save people money on household products so they can afford healthier food,” Pellow explains. ‌Southside Lumber ‌Southside Lumber has been a staple in the Herrin community since Claude Smith Sr. and Guy Smith started a company with a 1946 Dodge flatbed and two lots in downtown Herrin, Illinois. In 1951 Claude and his wife, Alice, took over control and began to expand to a full service lumber yard. They ran the business for the next 40 years. In 1989, their son, Kent C. Smith, came back from Baylor University with an MBA in business and took over the store. South Side Lumber now serves all of Southern Illinois and employs over 35 people as a one-stop shop for building projects, small or large. Southside Lumber, a third generation family owned business, has grown in size and scope over the years. A current expansion project, which is underway with two new warehouses with 20,000 feet of space completed and plans build a new showroom, will be completed by the end of 2015. The new showroom will offer more design space for kitchens and baths, a new paint display and a new hardware display area. According to Kent Smith, the employees are the store’s biggest strength and asset. “Many have been there 15 plus years and have developed strong relationships with customers, both contractors and retails, over the years,” Smith said. “They are also very knowledgeable.” Each staff member brings a lot of specific, specialty skills, work experience and education to their position. Employees have construction backgrounds including estimating and millwork. In the kitchen, bath and flooring departments, the interior designers have design and graphic degrees. Between them, the two flooring specialists have more than 50 years of experience. In the kitchen department, three employees have over 10 years of experience each and one has more than 30 years of experience. The general manager has over 25 years of experience. The yard foremens have 15 to 25 years on the job. All that experience is available to help the customer with their DIY projects or a builder with a variety of jobs, from replacing a door to a new kitchen or bath. They can even help with the design. Design advice is available for both interior and exterior spaces. Southside Lumber can help with paint, windows and doors, cabinets, flooring, siding,

roofing and more. “On the construction end, many of our employees have been out in the field and can help the customer with what product they need,” Smith said. “If you want to know the best type of product for your job, our employees can help you pick one off the shelf,” Smith said. “Or we can sit down with you and find out what your needs are and order the best product to meet your needs.” For your deck needs, Southside Lumber can help you design your deck so it fits your space requirements, is functional and is structurally sound. The employees know their jobs and take care of business. “Our employees are involved in the management of the business,” Smith said. In addition, the owners are also on hand—every day. Southside Lumber can also deliver products throughout Southern Illinois. “We have a lot of support in Southern Illinois,” Smith said. “And we support Southern Illinois.” According to Smith, his staff live in five counties surrounding the store. They are part of the community. Southside Lumber has been able to continually provide high-quality products and customer service for such a long period of time, while facing much more competition over the years and still growing their market share, as they have for the past three generations.

Farmers State Bank ‌Farmers State Bank, locally owned and operated, since 1910, has a rich history of serving Southern Illinois. The bank was organized and began operations on April 12, 1910, in Alto Pass, with deposits of $4,104.74, and capital of $25,000. The bank, which still remains in operation at Alto Pass, has the original glass, woodwork, marble and individually laid floor tile. In 1994, Farmers State Bank was purchased by Thomas W. Franks of Harrisburg who still remains as chairman of the board. In 1995, Farmers State Bank built its first branch in Harrisburg. The building is a beautiful facility that replicates Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. A third facility was opened in Marion in 1998. It is a “Key West” style building, offering a warm and inviting place for customers. In 2014, a fourth facility opened embodying an Italian architectural theme, conveniently located on the west side of Marion. “With many banks merging into large corporate operated facilities, Farmers

State Bank is proud to offer locally owned and operated banking service” said Charles Holland, FSB president. Farmers State Bank is and will remain a strong lender in consumer and commercial lending as well as deposit products suited to many needs. FSB Branches offer full service banking that includes fixed rate residential loans, home equity loans, commercial real estate loans, commercial lines of credit, and automobile loans. All conveniences big banks offer, but friendlier. “At Farmers State Bank, the core of our business is a simple truth: no one serves you better,” Holland said. “We can honestly promise this because we work harder and care more.” According to Holland, Farmers State Bank is going to do whatever it takes to make you happy. But it’s not a hard job. They simply treat you the way they would want to be treated. At Farmers State Bank, they strive to remain true to this core value, because it’s the same one on which they were raised. Only, who knew that treating others as you want to be treated would

Boost Your Local Economy It’s simple economics. As much as $75 out of every $100 that you spend at locally owned businesses remain in your area, according to recent studies. Compare that to $40 at non-locally owned establishments and zero dollars when you buy online, and your shopping priorities should be crystal clear. Impact

More money staying put in your area means more funding for your schools, roads and hospitals. Tax revenue created from local purchases goes back into community improvements and new development opportunities. In short, your money plays a major role in enhancing your daily life and the lives of those around you – depending on where you spend it. Additionally, small-business owners are more likely to make social investments in the community by volunteering at their child’s school, donating to local charities and hosting fundraising events, according to The American Small Business Coalition. Doing so allows these entrepreneurs to ingrain themselves into their communities and make it known that they are sensitive to the needs of those around them. From Local music groups to youth sports teams, small-business owners are quick to offer their sponsorship and money to help support community groups. This helps create customer buy-in for business owners, as well as a reputation for genuinely caring about their communities.

Hiring Local

And since local business owners hire local workers – about half of all private sector workers are employed in small businesses, according to the Bureau of Labor – money for taxes and wages stays in the community, too. Unemployment statistics are linked very closely to the success or failure of small businesses, which means that your infusion of shopping money can also make a positive impact on a national level. This creates a strong connection between workers and customers alike. You’re more than just another number in the customer count when you visit a local business. Without your business, your local small-business owner would not be able to hire or retain as many local workers. From the owner down to the seasonal part-timer, all employees of small businesses depend on your support.

Fowler Heating & Cooling ‌Though the family owned and operated Fowler Heating & Cooling located in Marion, Illinois, has been serving the entire Southern Illinois area for over 35 years, there are always new things afoot. Most notably this year, they are now the exclusive dealer in Southern Illinois for Daikin, the largest HVAC brand in the world, Daikin offers unsurpassed warranty and peace of mind, something that Fowler Heating & Cooling knows that their customers are counting on. The company, started by Loran & Carol Fowler in 1979, has remained resilient through the years. From starting out in a barn behind their home with just one employee, to eventually moving to South Court Street in Marion, and then surviving a devastating fire in the mid-90s, they have continued to grow exponentially. Even now, with around 25 employees, they have never lost their hometown business philosophy of staying honest, having integrity, and offering dependable, reliable service twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. If you ask Steve Fowler, Owner, he

maintains that this is what makes his company unique from the many other service companies out there. “We do what we say we are going to do, when we say we are going to do it. We don’t cut corners,” he says. “Our customers are like family, we take care of them and their homes like we would our own”. It can be clearly seen just by looking at the reviews and comments online and on social media sites that their customers feel the same way. When asked what the biggest strength of his company is, he is quick to commend his employees, saying that their knowledge, skills, and customer service are a big part of making the company successful. One of their best deals, besides affordable maintenance and service, is that they offer financing on everything, including service calls. “We try our best to take stock of how customers choose to spend their money in the consumer market, and offering financing options is a must!” They also offer a 33% discount to customers who sign up to be in their Maintenance Agreement Program, which includes the servicing

of all of their HVAC equipment biannually and can be paid for monthly with 0% interest. Keeping up with the ever-changing technological fast paced world of today, Fowler has embraced and has lots of experience with technology that other service companies are just starting

to consider. Each technician receives calls and completes invoices on mobile tablets, allowing them to take credit and debit card payments securely right in the field. They also have a customer portal, available through their website for customers to monitor their accounts, schedule appointments, and make payments. Staying on top of and taking into consideration the way their customers live and want to communicate with them often sets them apart from competitors. This company has many things to be proud of but if you ask Fowler, their answer is easy. “Happy customers!” they say. “Most of our new business comes from referrals from our existing customers. That says a lot, when someone is willing to put their own integrity on the line to recommend you to their family, friends, and colleagues.” With the third generation of Fowlers now working within the company, they show no signs of slowing down or changing their business philosophies. You can be assured that Fowler Heating and Cooling will be taking care of your family’s needs for many years to come.

‌Wells Fargo Advisors Financial Network/ Tison Wealth Management ‌Wells Fargo Advisors Financial Network/ Tison Wealth Management recently opened in Marion and Harrisburg. The branches were affiliated with Raymond James Financial Services for 18 years, but earlier this year switched to Wells Fargo Advisors Financial Network. “I think that Wells Fargo offers us a platform to take better care of our clients. I had always been impressed with the old A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. which was the predecessor firm. When we were offered the ability to join them, we jumped at the opportunity.” said Michael Tison, Branch Manager of the two branches. Wells Fargo Advisors Financial Network is the independent contractor side of Wells Fargo Advisors. This means they are not actually employees of Wells Fargo, but they own the branches. Tison stated he believes that is an advantage. “As a small business owner in Southern Illinois, I realized the importance of every client who comes to us for financial planning and investment advice. Additionally, we work with many business

owners helping them with everything from retirement plans to investment management to business loans. I think being a business owner helps us better understand a business owner’s needs.” In addition to working with business owners, they have a focus of assisting new retirees with IRA rollovers. “Retirees have a lot of financial planning issues,” said Tison. “First, investing in the withdrawal phase is different than investing while saving for retirement. Wells Fargo has some great financial planning software called the Envision Process that helps us manage the details so we can make appropriate recommendations. With interest rates so low and life expectancy still increasing, it is important to get off to a good start in retirement.” Tison Wealth Management is the practice name. They use a systematic consulting process for uncovering their client’s most important goals and for designing and implementing appropriate solutions. They define Wealth

“Some of the advanced planning needs we consider are wealth enhancement, wealth transfer, wealth protection and charitable giving planning.”

In addition to the two financial advisors, Kelly Ramsey has been with the firm for over 15 years and is a Registered Client Services Manager. With their change to Wells Fargo and consistent growth, they have added two additional client service assistants to their team, Cheryl Blair and Laila Abdo. Michael Tison, Branch Manager Michael Tison is Senior Financial Advisor in the branch. Michael has an MBA in Finance and Accounting from Vanderbilt. ‌SIU Credit Union Locally based and community operated credit unions, like SIU Credit Union, offer many more benefits to their members than people realize. In their 77th year of serving Southern Illinois, SIU Credit Union continues to find more ways to benefit their members. A credit union is a cooperative financial institution, owned and operated by members, which focuses on serving members’ needs and the community. Originally chartered as Jackson County Teacher’s Credit Union in 1938, SIU Credit Union has evolved into a community credit union. Almost anyone can join a credit union. Members are connected by a common bond—work, school, area, ethnic group or organization. If you live or work in one of the 11 counties served by the SIU Credit Union, you can belong to the credit union – a 35,000+ member financial institution. Just $5 is required to purchase a share of ownership. One unique characteristic of credit unions is that members are the owners, each purchasing a share in the organization as part of their initial deposit. Profits from the credit unions

are returned to members as higher interest rates on savings or other investment accounts and lower loan rates. A new addition to SIU Credit Union services includes a unified user experience. No matter what platform you use, a computer, tablet or mobile device, it will have the same look and feel when opening programs from SIU Credit Union. The SIU Credit Union is also updating their bill pay and making it easier to use and more convenient. SIU Credit Union’s Mobile Banking app, allows members to pay their bills and transfer funds from their smart phone or tablet. You can also make a deposit using the SIUCU Mobile Deposit app by taking a picture of your check with your smart phone or tablet. If you don’t have a smart phone, you can use SIU Credit Union’s text banking feature to check account balances, see transaction history and transfer funds simply by texting 226563 (BANKME). SIU Credit Union serves 11 counties, but doesn’t have a branch in all those counties. It makes it easier to do your banking whereever the member is and needs service.

Fish Tales Pet Shop ‌Linda Hooker is proud of the happy pets and helpful staff at Fish Tales Pet Shop. Hooker and Fish Tales Pet Shop have been a tradition in Southern Illinois for more than 20 years, as a top store for pets and pet supplies. They have been in their bigger and better facility in Energy, Ill, for two years now. “We’ve got more room and now offer hydrosurge technology for grooming,’ she said. ‘It offers deep cleaning and massage.” Hooker attributes the store’s success to her experienced staff and staying locally focused. They’ve heard every question from what to feed a lizard to caring for hamster babies and more. “We know these things,” Hooker said. “We have the experience to help our customers out.” That tradition of helping brings the customers back. Their revamped website is also helpful with news, info and calendar of events. “We’re not a chain, we’re locally owned,” she said. “That means we care more about people and their pets.” “It

also means if you need something we don’t have, we will make every effort to get it for you.” Hooker and her staff are serious about customer service. “It’s not just a job and we’re not just employees; we’re neighbors and friends,” she said. The friendly staff enjoys helping customers find new “friends” of their own, including dogs, cats, fresh and saltwater fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, bunnies, birds, reptiles and more. “We treat every pet with the utmost love and consideration, from the littlest mouse to the biggest puppy,” said Hooker. “We care about people and their pets.” Hooker and the Fish Tales staff are proud of their tradition of service and their new location. New this year is their “focus on” events, from Bark in the Park at the Miners game to the Williamson County Pavilion in September, they will be out there getting to know more folks and providing up to the minute information for your pet’s care.

Brad and Lori began their career by selling T-shirts on the strip and later opened the Waterbed Shop. From there, he added mattresses and bedroom sets and became Brad the Bed King. In 1999, he expanded his store into a 30,000 sq. ft. showroom, now called, “The Furniture King.” The Furniture King is managed by fellow Chicago native Diane Hood, who moved to Southern Illinois when her husband, Estus Hood, retired from the Green Bay Packers. Visit the huge showroom of the Furniture King you’ll think you are in a big city store, but the quality, service and price is that of a small town. The showroom features galleries with top brand name furniture like Broyhill Gallery, Smith Brothers Gallery, La-ZBoy and a Sealy Sleep Shop, Flex-Steel, Stearns and Foster. The Furniture King carries the area’s largest selection of La-Z-Boy home furnishings from recliners, occasional chairs,

Envi Salon & Spa ‌Angela Batson, owner of Envi Salon & Spa, an organic alternative salon, which offers high quality, cruelty free, professional services in an environmentally conscious atmosphere, has made it her mission to offer high quality salon services as natural as possible. Her motto is “Beauty Without Compromise.” Batson, who is a Certified Natural Products Formulator from the American College of Health Care Sciences, has received training in herbal medicine, holistic nutrition and aroma therapy. She opened Envi Salon & Spa in 2007 and established Envi Botanicals in 2008. “My goal is to provide personalized services and therapies, tailored to each client’s needs while being mindful of our health, well-being and environment,” Batson said. Batson is dedicated to her craft and the environment at the salon and in the community. “I am proud that I am able to help my clients understand the correlation

Page 32  Sunday, June 21, 2015

between their bodies inside and outside,” said Batson. “Our hair, skin and nails are a reflection of what may going on inside our bodies.” Skin is the body’s biggest organ and during a skin consultation a trained professional may be able to recognize what your body may be lacking. According to Batson, any inflammation in your body, including acne, eczema or psoriasis, may indicate a deficiency which may even be caused by allergies. Batson may be able to offer organic products to help your skin recover. “I would also recommend that you visit with your doctor or dietitian for an additional consultation,” Batson said. One of her missions is to be able to educate the consumer/client on ingredient/product safety. All products, even hair color, are cruelty free. “I like to know all I can about the products I use,” Batson said. Batson has pledged to use the freshest ingredients, including honey, beeswax,

milk, fruits and vegetables, organically grown, if possible, from local farms for the Farm Fresh Facial and Farm to Spa packages offered at Envi. That practice offers her clients the best treatments possible and also helps the community, something else that is important to Bason. “When I spend local, the money stays local,” Angela said. “I try to be organic and reduce my carbon footprint and I am able to provide save personal care products and promote local farmers.” Envi Salon & Spa is also a Community Supported Agriculture, CSA, drop off site for local produce from area farms. CSA allows community members to buy a “share” in a farm in return for a share of the items produced by the farm. Most CSAs deliver a weekly share of locally grown produce to their members. Envi Salon & Spa is also growing. Newly renovated space is available for a new cosmetologist and plans are underway for an online store featuring Batson’s products.

Cory Mohr Design “At Cory Mohr Design, our goal is to create spaces which are sophisticated, functional, livable, and affordable, but above all, a reflection of our clients.” What started as a moonlighting project in Cory Mohr’s dining room seven years ago has become a viable entrepreneurial venture, complete with a kitchen and bath showroom featuring high quality, custom materials. In 2008, Cory designed kitchens for a couple friends which led to several more jobs and a growing business. With excellent design sense, the business grew. Last spring, Cory opened a showroom on the east side of Carbondale so potential clients could walk into live models of his work. “There’s just something about seeing the designs and craftsmanship in person; being able to touch it and feel the quality, to get a sense of what it could be like in your own home,” he said. “Cory’s design was beyond anything we would have come up with on our own. We are now the proud owners of a one-of-a-kind custom look. Cory’s professionalism, enthusiasm, attention to detail, and eye for design all added up

to a tremendous boost for our home, and we couldn’t be happier with it.” (Janet McCready, Realty Central) “Cory is phenomenal! We completely remodeled our kitchen, dining area, and great room. Cory really developed a solid understanding of our use of the space and identified opportunities that we hadn’t even considered which expanded our useable space dramatically. Our main floor went from useful but nondescript to useful and jaw-dropping! We loved it so much that we hired Cory to redesign the kitchen and conference room at my office. His eye for detail and ability to tie things together is exceptional. I highly recommend Cory!” (John Forbes, Forbes Financial) “Cory Mohr Design is the premier design center for the Southern Illinois region. Cory and his team have a thorough knowledge of materials and finishes and a sensitivity to their clients needs. These reasons, coupled with a state of the art showroom in Carbondale, definitely puts CMD in the forefront of the residential design industry in southern Illinois.” (Cathy Creed, FWS Countertops)

Scavenger Hunt ‌Jennifer Gerlock and her father, Wayne, co-owners of Scavenger Hunt, have filled their store with one of a kind items and you never know what you’re going to find because the inventory is constantly changing. The pair utilize the “Storage Wars” concept where they buy up abandoned storage units and sell the contents at their store. Everything is priced to move and deals

will be made. Shoppers are encouraged to stop in regularly so they don’t miss that treasured item. The pair are excited that they could take their “hobby” and turn it into a successful business in downtown Carterville by taking stuff that was abandoned or discarded and put it back into the economy for someone else to use. A new store will be built across the street from the current store in fall 2015.

Vogler Ford ‌If you were to do a little research, you could easily learn that Time magazine made its debut on American newsstands in 1923. That same year the New York Yankees unveiled a new stadium in the Bronx called Yankee Stadium, also known as “The House that Ruth Built.” And a guy named Roy, along with his little brother Walt, started a little company that you may have heard of. They called it the Walt Disney Company. Fast forward ninety-two years: the old Yankee Stadium has been replaced by a newer one, but the team that plays there is more successful than any team in baseball. Time magazine is still a respected source for news, and Walt Disney World is one of the best-known name brands in the world. Another company that got its start that same year is right here in our back yard. Yes, it was 1923 when Ed Vogler, Sr. started Vogler Motor Company in Carbondale, IL. And like those other companies, Vogler has stood the test of time. The New York Yankees didn’t win 27 World Series titles by accident. They built a tradition of winning and excellence that their fans and players have come to expect and that they can take great pride in. Like the Yankees, Vogler has spent decades cultivating an atmosphere of family with a strong commitment to excellence as well. To be a part of the Vogler team is a great source of pride for its employees. Time magazine didn’t become the

respected news source that it is by reporting news that wasn’t backed up with facts and reported by people with ethics. And you can’t sell and service cars in the same town for 92 years without telling people the truth, and if you don’t have strong ethics word gets around pretty fast. A company like Disney continues to be a leader in customer satisfaction by going above and beyond to make their customers happy. If something is wrong, they make it right. People travel from around the globe to visit the Disney parks. That same philosophy has propelled Vogler to the top when it comes to customer satisfaction. They stand behind what they sell and people come from all over Southern Illinois and further to buy from a dealer they know they can trust. You don’t last 92 years without a strong commitment to whatever it is that you are doing. That’s the nuts and bolts of what makes Vogler Motor Company the business that it is today. Vogler has remained true to its mission statement of striving to make sure that every customer is completely satisfied. They believe the way to achieve that goal is by culturing an environment where long-term relationships are the standard. Since the beginning in 1923, Ed Vogler Sr. stressed a family tradition of honesty, trust and integrity. Those values were handed down to sons Ed and Don, who ran the store

until their retirements. When the time came for them to step down, they looked within the Vogler organization for the next ‘generation’ to carry it on. Frank Black began his career at Vogler as a salesman on a ‘temporary’ basis, working his way to become the next owner, and ended up serving the family business for over 50 years. Just like the Vogler family did with him, Frank looked within for his successors, and that brings us to where we are today in 2015. Dennis Rathjen and Bryan Black are the current owners. Both of these men ‘cut their teeth’ in the automotive business learning how to do it the Vogler way. Like Frank, they started at entry level positions and worked their way through the dealership until it was their turn to pick up the torch and carry it forward. So, although there isn’t anyone named Vogler who is involved in the operation of the business, the core values have been handed down from generation to generation, and are ingrained in the minds of those who lead Vogler Motor Company forward today. “We’re proud of what the Vogler family started and we do our best to honor that. We believe that it truly is the best way to operate our business,” said Dennis Rathjen. “Truth, honesty and integrity is important, especially in this business.” Because of the atmosphere and philosophy of the store, it is very rare for someone to leave Vogler for another

job in the auto industry. President and Owner, Dennis Rathjen has been with the company since 1972. Co-owner Bryan Black started in 1977. That’s 43 and 38 years respectively! The Vogler sales staff is no different. Of the 14 sales staff employees, the average tenure with Vogler Motor Company is over 11 years. Compare that to any other store and you’ll find that something different is happening at Vogler Motor Company. New Car Sales Manager, Tim Hirsch has been with the company for 18+ years. “It’s really about relationships. Working here is like being with your family, and that carries over to the way we try to treat people who do business with us. They’re part of the Vogler family too.” The business operates sales and service of new Ford, Lincoln, and Mazda products at their facility across from the University Mall in Carbondale at 1170 East Main Street. They also run a collision center and major parts distribution center from their other location on 301 North Illinois Avenue, where they also own and operate one of 4 NAPA Auto Parts stores. The others are in Murphysboro, Herrin and Marion. Time Magazine, the New York Yankees and Walt Disney World each have something in common with Vogler Motor Company. The one thing Vogler has that the other top companies don’t ……Vogler is locally owned!
