Nause photography on display at Civic Center Corridor Gallery CARBONDALE — A collection of photographic works by Chrystal Lea Nause titled “[t]here” is now on display at the Carbondale Civic Center Corridor Gallery. Nause, a graduate of the SIU Carbondale Department of Cinema and Photography, specializes in narrative tableau, architecture and landscape. She says she strives to emphasize the beauty found in isolation and anonymity. Nause began to take photographs and develop her wanderlust as a foreign exchange student to Tasmania, Australia, and has since traveled throughout the United States and to Australia, Canada, Mexico, Scotland and Italy. Her works reflect her preference for traditional processes that incorporate light-sensitive materials and chemistry. The photo exhibit, which will run through Aug. 19, is a selection of travel photography from work that was created in the United States, Scotland, England and Italy. A reception for Nause will be Sunday, Aug. 18. Her works are available for viewing from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Civic Center Corridor Gallery at 200 S. Illinois Ave. Additional information on the Carbondale Community Arts Corridor Gallery and other programs may be obtained by contacting CCA Executive Director, Nancy Stemper, by phone at 618-457-5100, by email at info@carbondalearts.org carbondalearts.org. — The Southern

“Everything we’ve put into it has absolutely been worth it,” Segretario said. “Les Miserables,” one of the longest running productions on Broadway, tells the story of Jean Valjean, who is released from prison after serving 19 years of hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread. He breaks his parole to create a new life for himself, and while evading an inspector, he comes to local power in a small French town where he owns a factory. Meanwhile, Fantine, a workingclass woman with a secret
illegitimate child, is desperate for medicine for her daughter. She sells her prized locket, her hair and herself into prostitution as a means of paying off debt. Hamblin said the story is enjoying a new life with a younger audience who discovered it through the theatrical adaptation. “Everyone has at least heard the name of the show, and since the movie came out, it’s even more accessible,” he said. “It has appealed to people around the world.” adam.testa@thesouthern.com / 618-351-5031

Kentucky Headhunters performing at Benton Civic Center on Aug. 9 COUNTRY SCENE Vince Hoffard
The Kentucky Headhunters 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, Benton Civic Center; $20, $15 at 618-435-5700 The Kentucky Headhunters never considered themselves a country band. The early years consisted of developing a thunderous rock ‘n’ roll sound in the same vein as Montrose, Rainbow, and KISS. Formed in 1968 and first
known as Itchy Brother, the years flew by, and the group experienced multiple missed opportunities. They were at a point where they thought success in the music business simply might not be in the cards. But a last-minute showcase in Nashville led to a record deal. Coming from out of nowhere with a unique driving sound, they captivated the music world with debut single “Walk Softly On This Heart Of Mine,” creating momentum that led to platinum record sales and prestigious awards. Fresh off induction into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and having a highway named in their
honor, The Kentucky Headhunters will appear at the Benton Civic Center at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 9. The band followed up its first single with “Dumas Walker” and “Oh, Lonesome Me,” their biggest hit to date. Originating in Metcalfe County, Ky., Itchy Brother core members included Greg Martin and his cousin, Fred Young, and his brother, Richard. They were on the cusp of breaking through on the major Southern Rock scene with Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Marshall Tucker Band but never got their big break. Discouraged, they disbanded. Richard Young started

In 1986, Martin got the itch to put the band back together. They converged on a practice house on the Young family farm. When an original member wasn’t interested in participating,
Martin invited a friend from McDowell’s road band, Doug Phelps, to a practice session. When Phelps’ brother, Ricky Lee, SEE HOFFARD / PAGE 10

tagged along, all five musicians instantly realized the blend was something special. A month after Ricky joined, the band went to Nashville and recorded a demo containing “Walk Softly On This Heart of Mine,” “Dumas Walker” and “Oh, Lonesome Me.” In 1988, a friend of the band fronted $4,500 that allowed for the recording of an eight-track project called “Pickin’ On Nashville.” The biggest break of all occurred when the act that was supposed to showcase at Douglas Corner with Lee Roy Parnell backed out. “We kicked off with ‘Walk Softly On This Heart Of Mine,’ and it was like someone said, ‘There’s a bomb in this place!’ The room cleared out in about two minutes,” Richard Young said. “Lee Roy later told us that when he heard us that night, he thought, ‘Oh my God, heavy metal bluegrass!’” Martin said. Harold Shedd, president of Mercury Records didn’t leave. He signed the band to a deal the next day. The album won a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and won Album of the Year from the Country Music Association in 1990. The Kentucky Headhunters were the CMA’s Group of the Year in 1990 and 1991. VINCE HOFFARD can
