he Carbondale Chamber serves the area as a strong non-profit, member driven, professional organization whose primary mission is to advance the interests of business. We strive to provide opportunities for business leaders to educate and promote themselves and their businesses. Additionally, we partner with a wide variety of organizations committed to making Carbondale a great place to live, work, visit, play and invest. Chamber members are people representing businesses who believe in their community and in conducting business the right way. Together they strive to be fully involved in all aspects of the city. They share a bias for action and the understanding that being a member is an investment not only for their business, but also in the quality of life for the entire region. The Chamber is a credible source of information for residents, visitors, people relocating to the area and new and existing businesses. Membership identifies businesses as reputable, trustworthy and invested. The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce

serves the city and the organization’s nearly 500 member-businesses through a variety of programs, services and activities. Major events such as the Chamber’s Annual Awards Banquet showcase the accomplishments and successes of our businesses. On-going programs include the Chamber’s regular Business Builders Breakfast, Round Pies/ Straight Talk and Networking at Noon series. Additionally, the Chamber regularly participates on the “Talk of the Town” radio program heard every Monday morning on WDBX-FM. The Chamber also stands as a credible source for the latest in information and business news for other local media outlets.
Ten months out of the year, the Chamber hosts a Monthly Membership Luncheon featuring a program on a topic of interest to the Membership. Each Spring and each Fall, the Carbondale Chamber works with other Chambers of Commerce in the region to host a Regional Chamber Luncheon. The members that reap the most benefit from membership are often the most active members, those who serve on committees and attend events. The following are just some of the many efforts that are the responsibility of the Chamber’s volunteer committees: The Ambassador & Membership Committee strives to promote member participation, support the mission of recruiting and retaining Chamber membership. Committee members also assist participating in ribbon cuttings, grand opening ceremonies and after hour events for member businesses. The members of this committee strive to make new and returning members feel welcome at Chamber events. The Saluki Pride Committee partners with Southern Illinois University in recruitment and retention efforts. The
committee participates in activities such as SIU Open Houses, Weeks of Welcome, Dinner in the Dale, Saluki Athletics, Homecoming and International Student Events. This committee is also responsible for the “Dawg Paws” seen on streets and in driveways across town. This committee provides many tools for area businesses to show their Saluki Pride. In addition to the Paws, they offer Saluki Banners and T-shirts. This committee also supports the Saluki Stay Scholarship that assists juniors and seniors by providing a variety of in-kind gifts from member businesses. Saluki Pride also funds the Chamber Scholarship and the Mayors Scholarship, which are awarded to Carbondale Community High School students committed to attending Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. The Government Affairs Committee, aka the DC Advocacy Committee discusses and researches pertinent state, local and national issues to help the Chamber best represent to governmental bodies the views and opinions of its membership. When appropriate, the committee supports a public stance by the Carbondale Chamber in support, or opposition of, actions being taken in government. Members of this committee have also attended Chamber Day at the State Capitol in Springfield. The nickname DC Advocacy Group is a result of recent trips to Washington DC to advocate for our city and county. These annual trips include area Mayors and City Officials, Chamber members, and representatives from local Unions, Southern Illinois University, and Southern Illinois Healthcare. The Economic Development Committee is comprised of community leaders with a bias for action. Three subcommittees exist within the Economic Development Committee. Each of the committees are focused on an area of Recruitment and Retention. The three areas are: Recruitment and Retention of Businesses, Recruitment and Retention of Residents and Recruitment and Retention of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale Students. This committee conducted a Survey to change to assess the needs of the business community. The results of the survey were shared at a luncheon at Keller’s Crossing at Stone Creek. These results have provided a road map for the work of this group. Accomplishments include hosting a Carbondale Connections event to connect business people with free and low-cost services, establishing new resident welcome bags, and working to better partner with the Southern Illinois University. The Carbondale Young Professionals (CYP) group provides a path for young professionals to live fully by being engaged, shopping local, and participating in events in the Carbondale community. This group provides opportunities for people to build their network of contacts through fun activities and networking events. CYP also provides programing designed to help its members grow in the
2018 Carbondale Leadership Class
areas of communication, leadership and management. Lastly, CYP works to join young professionals together to benefit the Carbondale community through participation in charitable efforts. The Leadership Carbondale Committee plans and executes an eight-month Leadership Course. The class meets monthly. The class is designed for members of the business community who seek further leadership development and want to learn more about the Carbondale Community. During the mornings of each session, a community leader leads the class through the Positive Leadership Curriculum. The class then travels to a Chamber Member Restaurant for a Lunch and Learn featuring a speaker on the topic of Leadership. The afternoon is reserved for a Field Experience in which the class tours unique locations throughout Carbondale. The class is exposed to a Community Leader who meets with them at each of the locations. The class will also complete a class project during the time of their course. Leadership Carbondale culminates with a graduation at our Monthly Membership Luncheon in November. This program had been dormant for some time and resumed in 2018. The program graduated 13 participants in 2018, and currently has a class of 10. The Finance Committee oversees the day to day financials of the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce. The Finance Committee provides guidance on high impact financial decisions. They also oversee the budget process and works to ensure that the Chamber is staying within its budget throughout the year. Additionally, the Finance Committee monitors the outsourcing of payroll for office staff and makes recommendations about employee expenses. The Chamber recently added a new Mentoring Program known as LIFT. The LIFT Mentoring Program prepares young adults for the workforce by equipping them with soft skills and needed contacts. The program allows unemployed and
underemployed persons to be paired with a series of business leaders who mentor them of over a six-week period. This program is in partnership with Man-Tra-Con Corporation. In addition to the ongoing committees mentioned above, there are two Special Event Committees that meet seasonally for six months leading up to each of the two major Chamber Events: Annual Awards Banquet and Golf Scramble/Fun Day. These Special Events Committees plan, execute and review results from these two large scale events. In addition to our own events, we support a variety of community events including Carbondale Halloween, Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church Backpack Give-AWay, the Crime Stoppers Convention, and many more. The Chamber President/CEO along with the Chairman of the Board of Directors attend a monthly meeting with the Chancellor and Chief of Staff of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and the Mayor and City Manager of the City of Carbondale. This meeting allows all three parties – Chamber, City, and University – to ensure that we are working in a cooperative manner to best serve all parties. Most of all, the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce tirelessly works to promote and support business in the city. From “Shop Southern IL” programs to bulk electrical aggregation efforts to save members money, business expositions and showcases, specialized training sessions and community outreach efforts, the Chamber is in business for business. The Chamber of Commerce is overseen by a Board of Directors consisting of 12 elected members and three appointed members. The three appointed members represent the City, the School District and the University. When quick decisions are needed, the Executive Committee is called into service. The Executive Committee consists of the current Board Chairman, the Past Board Chairman, the Chair-Elect, Treasurer and an additional member appointed by the Chairman. carbondalechamber.com

CARBONDALE: A PLACE TO BE INVOLVED
W
hat does a typical day, or a week, or month in Carbondale look like? Well, sometimes it is best to look at a year to see what keeps us hopping. The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce runs on a paid staff of two people. During the school year, we employ two Southern Illinois University (SIU) Interns at ten hours per week. They primarily work in the areas of graphic design, public relations, special events, and member outreach. Our Board of Olson Directors, Committee Chairs and Participants, and countless Volunteers help support and assist us through many efforts and activities. Despite the small numbers, together we are a mighty team. Member Businesses are our heartbeat. Members are included in print directories and other materials and listed and promoted online. We also send them referrals, provide training, and host member events. Member events include ten monthly Membership Luncheons, two Regional Chamber Luncheons, 12 Networking at Noon Lunches, six Round Pies / Straight Talk Lunches, six Business Builder Breakfasts, numerous Business After Hours, and many Ribbon Cuttings. We do our best to connect the business representatives and provide a place for them to promote themselves. In addition to these essential services, we are active in the community in a myriad of ways. The Chamber team works on a number of outside committees including Saluki Start-Up / Weeks of Welcome, Homecoming, Celebrate 618, Carbondale Halloween, City of Carbondale Job Fair, National Small Business Week Committee, Crime Stoppers, Southern Illinois University (SIU) 150th Birthday, Carbondale Proud, Fashion Week, Southern Illinois (SI) Made Expo, The American Heart Association Go Red for Women, Leadership Carbondale, The Great Carbondale Pumpkin Race, and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Fly-In Event. We frequently work with Carbondale Main Street, Carbondale Tourism, Keep Carbondale Beautiful, Carbondale Park District, Green Earth, the City of Carbondale, and many other organizations to put on events or programs. We have had the opportunity for brainstorming on Trails, Outdoor Recreation, and Local Economy from Illinois Main Street. The Chamber is visible as a Representative of the Business Community. Some of the events attended include the Banterra Center Announcement, Meet the Mayor, Saluki Women’s Excellence Event, Progressive
Patio Tour, Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) Gala, EmpowHER Luncheon, Special Olympics Opening Ceremony, Grape Growers & Vintners Alliance Dinner, Saluki Athletics Logo Reveal, SIH Logo Reveal, Mayor’s Cup, Carbondale Community High School Awards Night, Southern Business Journal Leadership Breakfast, Veterans Honor Flight Check Presentation, Governor’s Press Conference at Walker’s Bluff, and the Economic Impact of Human Services Sector Report Release. The Chamber Co-Hosts a variety of off-site events with Carbondale Young Professionals including Hidden Gems at Route 51 Brewing, Music Bingo at Hanger 9, Speed Networking at Bandanna’s Bar-B-Que, and a Leadership Panel at Pagliai’s Pizza. The Chamber staff, along with the committee Chair, and its many volunteers serve as facilitators for Leadership Carbondale. In addition to assisting with the curriculum, we also help coordinate tours of area entities for the class. Maintaining the network of graduates of the Leadership Carbondale program is also a priority. We also provide speakers for a variety of groups such as Rotary Club, Professional Women’s Networking Group, Southern Illinois University Constituency Relations Committee, Study Circles Neighborhood Groups, Lions Club, College of Business Advisory Board, and Banterra Bank’s Life Scripts class. As mentioned, the Chamber employs two paid interns. Our office also hosts Participants from our LIFT Mentoring Program. We are a presenter for Jackson CEO (Creating Entrepreneur Opportunities); we are an investor in this youth development program. The SIU College of Business hosts Marketing U each year, and we present at the day-long student event. In partnership with the Illinois Department of Employment Security and Man-Tra-Con, we provided hands-on training for My Tax Illinois and other online programs. A monthly appearance on WDBX’s Talk of the Town is on the calendar. Additionally, our staff has appeared on Everything but the Kitchen Sink on WDBX, and Miller in the Morning on New Radio WJPF. We have also worked with Wither’s Radio. Our team has also made many television appearances on the KFVS-12 and WSIL-TV3. We were also part of a panel for live broadcast on NPR Illinois. We work closely with the Communications and Marketing teams of the City, SIH, SIU, and our Elected officials. Our staff works to continue to learn by attending training such as Workforce Development for Rural Communities, Illinois Manufacturing Association Seminar, Delta I-Fund, Delta Leadership Network Conference, Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives Training, Grant Writing Workshop for Apprenticeships,
Jackson Growth Accliance Creative Placemaking, Enterprise Excellence, and the Building a Competitive Future workshop The Chamber has an active role in welcoming prospective and returning students. We staff vendor booths and speak at SIU Open Houses, attend FFA Night, SIU Day, student move-in, and more. We coach at the student Etiquette Dinner. We serve as docents on tour buses for student groups, new staff, and current SIU employees. Our Saluki Pride committee paints Saluki Paws on area roadways and does all they can ‘paint the town maroon’ to boost Saluki Spirit. We meet monthly with the Chancellor and Mayor’s offices to learn how we can continue to partner in support of SIU. The Chamber attended the House Hearing of the funding of Higher Education. While the focus of the work of the Chamber is for the benefit of Carbondale businesses, we are also active at the regional level. Our team attends a Regional Chamber Directors Meeting each quarter. We co-host two luncheons and participate in many other Chambers’ Annual Banquets. The Chamber has also had a role in events in the greater Delta region, of which Southern Illinois is a part. Carbondale Chamber had a significant role in the Shop SI Efforts during the Holidays, serving as social media coordinator. With a staff of two; Volunteers are crucial. Carbondale Chamber of Commerce VOLUNTEERS: • Call on Businesses to Promote Projects & Programs • Pick up Donations, Décor, and other needed Supplies • Make Outreach for New Memberships • Represent the Chamber to Media, on the News • Plan and Develop Programs • Represent the Chamber at Community Events • Paint Paw Prints on Streets • Act as a Welcome Face for Members • Serve as Mentors • Teach 100% of the Leadership Carbondale Curriculum • Speak and Present at reoccurring Events • Serve as Board Members, Chairs, and on Committees • Set-Up and Tear-Down at Events and Meetings • Make Follow-Up Phone Calls • Deliver Welcome Bags to New Residents • Provide Guidance to Other Members • Advocate for Businesses Without all the support, we would be unable to accomplish many of the things listed above. We bid them a hearty Thank You, and look forward to another great year serving the Carbondale business community, and the community at large. JENNIFER OLSON, President, and CEO of Carbondale Chamber of Commerce

he first two phases of the Illinois Avenue Streetscape Improvements Project are complete. Phase 3 is in the planning stage. You’ll notice new streetlights, sidewalks, trees, planters as well as traffic signals and security cameras. Improvements are also continuing at the Washington Street Venue where we are hosting Sunset Concerts and other events with great success. In addition to the improvements being made downtown, there are a number of economic development Mayor Henry projects taking shape in Carbondale. This includes the following: Southern Illinois Healthcare is opening a 42,000 square foot medical clinic and teaching space that will be used by the SIUC School of Medicine. • IlliniCare Health/Centene has rented and remodeled 80,000 square feet of office space at University Mall. It’s projected that they will employ over 400 people. • Captain D’s opened a new restaurant at the corner of East Walnut Street and Lewis Lane. • Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is now open on Giant City Road. • The former Ramada Inn on the City’s west side has new owners and is being completely remodeled. • Kohl’s is downsizing its store on Giant City Road in order to make room for Planet Fitness. • Sergio’s Mexican Restaurant is finishing a complete remodel and update to what was formerly Lonestar Steakhouse. • The new Hilton Home2Suites is now open downtown. Wireless store at University Place. • ZX Gas on West Main Street recently remodeled its station and added a new convenience store. • A new brewpub is coming soon to downtown in the former Street Bar location. This activity indicates that investors and business owners have renewed confidence
in Carbondale’s economy and businessfriendly attitude. As you may know, City Manager Gary Williams, Director of Economic Development Steven Mitchell, representatives from Southern Illinois Healthcare, Southern Illinois University, the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce and I recently took a trip to Washington D.C. We met with Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, Congressman Mike Bost and officials from Amtrak, the Department of Human Services and the Department of Transportation. This was our second trip, and it is something we will continue to do annually. Southern Illinois University at Carbondale is the main economic driver for the region. The City remains dedicated to working alongside university officials to collaborate, grow enrollment, bring more entertainment to Banterra Center (formerly the SIU Arena) and promote Saluki spirit throughout the community. As I have said before, “By working together, we are making Carbondale the place that you and I, our children and grandchildren, are proud to call home.” carbondalechamber.com

The depth and breadth of the team allows Prairie to specialize in a comprehensive list of services including open-heart and vascular surgery, minimally invasive heart valve replacement and other interventional heart and vascular procedures for arrhythmias, chest pain and management of chronic cardiac conditions such as heart failure. The SIH Brain and Spine Institute in Carbondale allows a collective approach to caring for the complex issues of brain and spine. Although situated in Carterville, the SIH Cancer Institute is a service of SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Taking the different elements of the cancer care model, some of which were located at the hospital, the program is now under one beautiful outpatient roof, nestled against the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge. Here patients receive coordinated cancer treatments in a facility that was created in large part to the generous support of the Southern Illinois community. Also, SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale is a teaching hospital, offering on-the-job training to family medicine residents and sports medicine fellows through Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The hospital, parent company SIH, and SIU School of Medicine collaborate to strengthen and expand rural health opportunities. The entities broke ground on a 40,000 square foot family medicine and teaching facility adjacent to the hospital on June 2018. The facility will open in mid-August 2019.

CARBONDALE: A PLACE FOR COMMUNITY
Byron Hetzler, The Southern

A
s I sit down to write this piece, at the end of a busy day promoting downtown Carbondale, my kids are in the next room getting ready for one of Carbondale’s longestrunning traditions, the Sunset Concert Series. Tomorrow our family will head downtown, to the Washington Street Venue, with coolers, blankets, and snacks in tow, to tap our toes. We will join hundreds of people of all ages Cole looking to do the same! I can hear my children talking over how many twinkies to pack, and whether or not dad will let them take their bean bag chairs (the answer is “no”). I would say this is a typical way that many families in Southern Illinois prepare for a summer Thursday sunset. Carbondale is a wonderful community
in which to raise a family, but also just a beautiful community in which to live. I encourage you to visit, and visit often, and to experience our community in all ways. As you thumb through the pages of this publication, you’ll read about the Sunset Concerts, but also about many other events, including the Brown Bag Concert Series, Fourth Friday Fairs, our annual Lights Fantastic Parade, and the Carbondale Classic (a more adult activity). In reality, we boast so much programming in our downtown, and throughout the city, there is something for everyone. We have long-standing businesses that succeed next to fresh new faces in our downtown. I’d recommend stepping into both old and new businesses, including anchors like Quatro’s Pizza and Mary Lou’s Grill, and excellent newer spots like Keeper’s Quarters and Underground Public House. With over thirty eateries and bars in downtown Carbondale, and a brewery joining our roster this October, we are the
place to eat and be entertained. Combined with excellent programming and frequent concerts and shows in venues such as the Hangar 9, Varsity Center, and Carbondale Community Arts’ Gallery 304, you’ll find something to do with or without your bean bag chair! It is my day job to sing the praises of downtown, and I genuinely love it. I also am a big fan of downtown in my personal life and am raising two young fans as well. As you read about the Carbondale community, if you are looking for a recommendation, answer to a question, or a friend, feel free to contact me. I’ll be at the Sunset Concert! Why do I love Southern Illinois?
I’m not from here, but Southern Illinois is home. Just because I wasn’t born here doesn’t mean I can’t love it here. Southern Illinois is where I met my wife. It’s where my children were born. It’s where we’re raising our children. Many people think that because I work for the newspaper, I don’t care about the people. I do. I shop at local stores. I eat at local restaurants. I even coach some of your children. I am your neighbor. This is home, and it’s a place I want to be for a long time.

We have been nationally recognized: • In Symphony magazine, the premier publication for American orchestras, as one of only five professional music festivals in Illinois, (and the only one South of I-80), alongside such distinguished peers as the Ravinia Festival, summer home of the Chicago Symphony; • By the Chicago Tribune Travel section as one of 24 top summer activities (musical and otherwise) in an eight-state region; • By AAA Midwest magazine as a Midwest Travel Treasure; • By WTTW’s Arts Across Illinois, in
The 2020 Southern Illinois Music Festival runs May 31 through June 14, presenting three-dozen performances in venues from Carbondale to Cairo, Murphysboro to Marion and at many points in between, with the epicenter at SIU Carbondale. The centerpieces of the 2020 Festival are two fully staged operas—Puccini’s great tragedy, Tosca, and Donizetti’s delightful comedy, The Elixir of Love—presented in historic Shryock Auditorium with English supertitles and an internationally acclaimed cast. Two large orchestral concerts feature music by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Strauss, Wagner, and Sibelius; multiple chamber music performances celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday, and Klassics for Kids and Jive with Jazz engage younger audiences with free admission performances in smaller venues. Many SIFest events are admission-free, including over a dozen geared primarily for young persons, with remaining events reasonably priced. All performances are presented in an informal and audiencefriendly manner. The Southern Illinoisan recognized the Festival in its “101 Things To Do In Southern Illinois” and “Southern Illinois in 99 Things,” and gave the 2014 Festival a “Thumbs Up” on their editorial page, with the following description: It’s the best time of year for local lovers of great music. This year’s selections at the Southern Illinois Music Festival have been impressive and outstanding, notably the Battle of Normandy 70th Anniversary Tribute performances. It was primarily inspired to invite the 97-year-old composer, Lionel Semiatin of White Plains, New York, to the Tuesday night performance at First United Methodist Church in Carbondale. Semiatin is a World War II veteran and Normandy survivor who likely holds the sole distinction of writing the only chamber orchestra piece while on the battlefield. Semiatin received a standing ovation by the near-capacity crowd. This was a quality classical music offering that matched what’s
