University, so many locallyowned restaurants, as well as art galleries, music venues, and places to pass the time on your walk…so let’s take a walk of my Top Ten List for
Visiting Carbondale: 10. Have a Dairy Queen Cole snack in one of less than 40 original historic Dairy Queen drive up buildings left in the US. Have an ice cream, but if you want to have the Carbondale experience, eat on the “front porch” of one of our oldest businesses. We will make room. 9. Arrive on Amtrak. Ok, I may be out of order in our trip here, but the railroad (sometimes quite loud) serves Carbondale very well with three trains to-and-from
Chicago each day. The train goes other places too…see Amtrak.com for details. I will say it’s a relaxing way to travel and our newest hotel in downtown Carbondale, the
Hilton Home2Suites is just across the street. 8. Take a bike ride! Getting back on
track here (get it? Railroad tracks…bike tracks? Is that a joke) We have a great biking community with three long-standing, locally-owned bike shops in the center of our downtown. Carbondale is a great place to own and ride a bicycle. To learn more about trails and fix-it stations, visit bikecarbondale. com. 7. Pick a park. Any park. We has nine great parks throughout the City and surrounding area. 6. Okay that took us outside of downtown. Our walk made me just want to sit down and enjoy a cold beverage…but luckily, we have several downtown watering holes. Whether you are looking for an excellent Bloody Mary (The Cellar), live music (The Hangar 9), friendly faces (PK’s) a cold beer or shot of whiskey (Buckwater Brew Works & Whiskey House) we have something for everyone. Check out carbondalemainstreet.com for a comprehensive list. 5. Catch a show at the Varsity Center. The Varsity Center is a historic movie theatre featuring live music and theater, old movies, and good times. 4. Grab a bite. You must be hungry by now. We have GREAT restaurants in Carbondale. If you want deep dish pizza, get Quatro’s. Vegan? Longbranch Café and Bakery. Date

night? Global Gourmet, Underground Public House, or Keeper’s Quarters. Diner food? Asian? Coffee? Sweet treats? We have a list for everyone! 3. Take a walk. WAIT! We are on a walk. No, but seriously, our downtown is pretty walkable. We also have public transportation in the form of busses, taxis, Uber, etc. But our small town with big amenities is easy to get around. 2. Entertain Yourself! Downtown Carbondale has so many public events, free live concerts, and other entertainment, take advantage while you are here. It would be a shame to miss a Brown Bag Concert, Friday Night Fair, or Lights Fantastic Parade…for more information see the events section of this publication. 1. Stay awhile, take more than one day to explore downtown Carbondale. There are so many fabulous views to be had.
I’m so lucky I have the view I do.
