Carbondale is the recognized regional leader for healthcare in Southern Illinois. Combining an exceptional level of community commitment and providing an array of specialized health care professionals, residents receive stateof-the-art medical treatment and illness prevention.

SIH, a not-for-profit health system, is the region’s second-largest employer with approximately 3,800 physicians, nurses and employees. With a commitment to caring that goes well beyond the walls of the hospitals, SIH works with other facilities and programs in the region to improve processes that best help patients. They also share in a vast array of charitable and civic causes that center around their mission of improving the health and well-being of all people in the communities they serve.

SIH MEMORIAL HOSPITAL OF CARBONDALE

SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, a 162-bed facility, is the regional leader in tertiary, high-level services for heart, brain, spine, obstetrics, cancer and roboticassisted surgery. At time of publication, the hospital was also in pursuit of earning Level II trauma center designation.

SIH Prairie Heart Institute is headquartered on the hospital campus. Services cover the gamut of heart issues with 10 cardiologists and two cardiothoracic surgeons. The depth and breadth of the team allows Prairie to specialize in a comprehensive list of services including open-heart and vascular surgery, minimally invasive heart valve replacement and other interventional heart and vascular procedures for arrhythmias, chest pain and management of chronic cardiac conditions such as heart failure.

The SIH Brain and Spine Institute in Carbondale allows a collective approach to caring for the complex issues of brain and spine. Neurosurgeons, neurologists, stroke specialists, and pain management physicians are all under one roof to allow a cooperative approach to patient care. The program is nationally recognized for its stroke care, and the facility is considered a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission.

with more than 2,000 babies born each year. The facility has the region’s only Level II Plus Special Care Nursery for babies with intensive care needs. It also houses the area’s only dedicated pediatric unit.

Although situated in Carterville, the SIH Cancer Institute is a service of SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Taking the different elements of the cancer care model, some of which were located at the hospital, the program is now under one beautiful outpatient roof, nestled against the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge. Here patients receive coordinated cancer treatments in a facility that was created in large part to the generous support of the Southern Illinois community.

Also, SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale is a teaching hospital, offering on-the-job training to family medicine residents and sports medicine fellows through Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The hospital, parent company SIH, and SIU School of Medicine collaborate to strengthen and expand rural health opportunities. The entities broke ground on a 40,000 square foot family medicine and teaching facility adjacent to the hospital on June 2018. The facility will open in mid-August 2019.
