‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Carbondale’s First United Methodist Church attempts to live this Scripture in our missions programs. In 2012 and 2013 the Church sponsored golf scrambles that benefited Imagine No Malaria (INM) and local food pantries, respectively. Our 2012 scramble raised $8,709.29 as part of an initiative of The Methodist Church and numerous other agencies to reduce the impact of malaria across the world. The 2013 Golf Scramble benefited five food pantries: Bethel AME, Good Samaritan Ministries, Jesus es el Señor, Murphysboro, and Wesley Foundation. Each received $1,327.39 this year. Julie Beck and Susan Watson led the efforts that resulted in these two successes. Church members also work with Bethel’s kitchen, Gum Drops, and scout food drives. March to the Manger and Easter are two major annual events to assist numerous organizations. We are engaged in other areas besides food. Come, see us in action, and join with us as we attempt to live Matthew 25:40. Sherry Smedshammer, Wesley Foundation Director, receives the $1,327.39 check from Susan Watson, FUMC Golf Scramble Co-Chair. Wesley, Bethel AME Feed My Sheep, Good Samaritan Ministries Food Pantry, and Murphysboro Food Pantry each received the same amount that were proceeds from the September 21 Scramble. Mike Heath is the Executive Director of Good Samaritan Ministries. Susan Watson presents the scramble check that will assist the Good Sam Food Pantry. Good Sam provides numerous other services to the community and area that FUMC and its members assist with. Carol Lloyd leads the Feed My Sheep Kitchen at Bethel AME Church. Members of the First United Methodist Church staff the kitchen one day per month. In addition, to preparing a meal the Church provides the food. Other members volunteer on other days. FUMC has also assisted with providing equipment and repair for the Kitchen.

SIU CREDIT UNION SIU Credit Union (SIU CU) has been serving the financial needs of Southern Illinois for over 75 years and unlike many banks, SIU Credit Union is not in business to make a profit. Instead, SIU CU strives to follow in the tradition of the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People.” Like credit unions across the country, SIU CU is committed to their communities, offering financial services to underserved populations, engaging youth in financial education, supporting charitable activities and returning profits to their members.
In 2013, SIU CU partnered with many local groups and events in effort to give back to our communities, with the most notable being the Southern Illinois Heart Walk to support the American Heart Association. In the months leading up to the Heart Walk, the staff at SIU CU organized events and dedicated their time outside of work to help raise funds for this cause. On the day of the Heart Walk, staff members did not let the rain stop them from participating as volunteers helped to collect money from other teams, organizations and individuals. When all the totals came in,

FRIENDS OF MURPHYSBORO It was five years in the making but the local organization, Friends of Murphysboro (FOM), succeeded in gathering the support to make their Riverside Dog Park a reality. The one acre fenced area gives dogs a chance to run and play without being on a leash. Dog parks are not only about the dogs, but also about the people who frequent them. Many of those utilizing the Murphysboro Dog Park are regulars and meet there to socialize with new found friends. Outside of Belleville, Murphysboro hosts the only public dog park in southern Illinois. People come from surrounding towns and travelers often look up the dog park on the web and stop here as they are passing through. “It has been
an overwhelming success!” says Patty Bateman, lead organizer. The park was built and is maintained solely through fundraisers and public donations. If you would like to donate for upkeep of the dog park: FOM Dog Park, P.O. Box 18, Murphysboro, IL 62966. Visit us at www.friendsofmurphysboro. org and Facebook: Friends of Murphysboro Dog Park.

Secondary (high) school in Kenya is not free. Students must pay fees and boarding expenses, as well as take a standardized, comprehensive exam covering all the material taught in the first eight grades to qualify. Primary (elementary) school, (PreK-8) has been free for about 10 years; however, in many rural communities, textbooks and learning materials are very limited for classes that often average 50-60 students per classroom. Teach My Kenyan Children (TMKC), a non-profit organization based in Murphysboro, has been working for the past 11 years to improve the primary school learning environment and to provide access to a secondary school education for needy children from rural Kenya. TMKC began helping one school at the base of Mt. Kenya in 2002 with infrastructure and classroom improvements. They built libraries, provided books, pencils, paper, teaching materials, and teacher training. As children began to score better on the yearly achievements exams, students began to qualify for secondary (high) school. Since 2005, TMKC has provided secondary school fees for over 110 needy children from five rural schools at the base of Mt. Kenya. Currently, 17 TMKC beneficiaries are in Kenyan universities because of TMKC’s educational support. In August, 2013, a young woman who was orphaned at age 17, became the first TMKC beneficiary to graduate from a four-year university. In 2014, two more university students will graduate, with degrees in pharmacy and business, and over 50 students will receive scholarships for their secondary (high) school fees. Currently, TMKC also is working to address poverty in the rural communities it serves because poverty is the root problem for limited access to a quality education. In 2012, TMKC conducted an economic study to understand how to improve the earning ability of parents and residents in the communities it serves. ‘Access to a steady source of water’ was the number one limitation to maximizing the income parents currently earn from farming. Most parents are subsistence farmers, and as one parent said, “nothing grows without water.” Currently, rainwater is available 8 months a year, but the dry spells decrease productivity of plant crops and milk production, and increases labor to water plants and animals. Plans are underway for TMKC to provide deepwater wells and/or catchment systems to augment the water resources in the communities. Because “a rising tide lifts all boats,” this investment in the school and community will provide more opportunities to Teach My Kenyan Children. Anyone interested in learning more about or participating in this rewarding work can reach TMKC at tmkc.us@gmail.com, or access the organization’s Facebook page at Teach My Kenyan Children. A new website is under construction and should be available in early 2014.

Giving Opportunity Did you know there are creative ways to support the John A. Logan College Foundation? Ways in which The Foundation, you, and your loved ones, all benefit at the same time? Such giving techniques are called “planned gifts,” because with thoughtful planning, you create win-win solutions for you and The Foundation. This brief list will help you think about donating in new ways. For more information, go to

Discover The Benefits Of Giving Wisely
CASH
REAL & PERSONAL PROPERTY
RESTRICTED FUND ACCOUNTS
Cash is the easiest way to give support to the college and provides the maximum deduction. Checks should be made payable to JALC Foundation. The Foundation accepts cash donations using VISA, MasterCard and Discover.
The JALC Foundation reviews for acceptance gifts of real or personal property (gifts in kind) that enhance the mission of the College. Gifts in kind may include your personal residence, farm, equipment, artwork, rare books, and other property that have a determinable value. The IRS has established rules for valuing these gifts. Please consult your tax advisor for determining the tax benefits this type of gift may provide.
Restricted Fund Accounts are administered as the donor advises within the parameters of our operational guidelines. They can be funded through annual contributions or through a one-time, lumpsum gift. A majority of these types of funds are designated for student scholarships; however they can also be used to support other needs.
MATCHING GIFTS A great way for you to increase the benefit of your contribution without any additional cost is for you to ask your company’s personnel or community relations department if your company has a Matching Gift Program.
SECURITIES Stocks, mutual funds, bonds, and other publiclytraded securities may be transferred as gifts through the Foundation. Gifts of long-term appreciated securities may offer a substantial tax savings. Please contact your accountant or financial advisor for further information.
PLANNED GIFTS Planned gifts are those gifts which arc made during your lifetime, but the benefits to the JALC Foundation are not realized until a future date. They represent your ultimate investment in the College’s mission. These gifts may take the form of a bequest in your will, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts and life estate agreements.
ENDOWMENT When you create a named endowment, you are creating a legacy that lives forever. An endowment creates a gift for all time that can honor a loved one, a special mentor, your family or yourself. The principle balance of an endowment is invested in perpetuity. A portion of the earning is distributed to an expendable fund to be used as designated by the endowment agreement. The remainder is added back into the endowment corpus. Endowed gifts can be designated for specific purposes, such as scholarships, equipment, faculty development or they may be unrestricted. The minimum required amount to establish an endowment is $25,000, which is payable over a five-year period.
Hope Crider HERRIN, ILLINOIS - FOUNDATION RECIPIENT
“This is the job I wanted to do. I knew it was my destiny.” As a single mother of three and a full-time nurse’s aide, Hope Crider knew a little something about hard work before she decided to go back to school. But the prospect of more challenges didn’t stop her from pursuing her dream of becoming a registered nurse. Long shifts working at the hospital, night classes and being a parent, meant time was at a premium but Hope knew she needed to earn her degree, for herself and her family .“It was a hardship on my kids; I was working 12-hour shifts three days a week and, on top of that, I was taking classes at night,” she said. Early in 2010, Crider realized her dream and took her first shift as a registered nurse. It’s a reality she said would have gone unrealized without help from the John A. Logan Foundation. “There weren’t any other options; I wasn’t in a position to take on a loan,” she said. “Without the foundation, I would still be in nursing school -- but part time. I’d be working and trying to juggle school and a family. “Having that Foundation scholarship has meant everything to me,” she added. Page 9 • Community of Giving 2013

RETIREMENT PLAN-LIFETIME GIFT Retirement funds can be taxed if passed on to heirs, yet are tax-free to charity.
Dear Friends & Supporters of John A. Logan College We are so thankful for the many friends and alumni who have contributed to the John A. Logan College Foundation throughout the years. Because of your generosity, the JALC Foundation awards and administers more than 600 scholarships each year, totaling nearly $800,000. Your financial and in-kind contributions, as well as your time and talent, continue to make a special difference as we work together to improve the quality of life for our students, their families, and the communities we serve. With the consistent growth in enrollment the need for new scholarships is greater than ever before. John A. Logan College has experienced continuous growth in student enrollment over the past decade. Increased enrollment means that there is now a greater need for new scholarships to insure that every student has the opportunity to be successful. While tuition at John A. Logan College is among the lowest in the State of Illinois, the fact remains that over 65% of our students rely on financial assistance to pursue their education. You and your gift can make a difference in their lives. Your donation to the Annual Giving Campaign will directly support the efforts of the Foundation to provide scholarships. The JALC Foundation can assist you with matching your individual philanthropic goals with the needs of our students. We ask that you support our students and the College by contributing to the Annual Giving Campaign. It’s about more than just charity; it’s about investing in the future of southern Illinois. Gratefully, Michael Dreith, Ed. D., President JALC and Staci Bynum, Executive Director, JALC Foundation WHAT IS THE ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN? The Annual Giving Campaign is your opportunity to contribute to the Foundation. It is a powerful way to make an immediate impact and change a student’s life forever. Your contributions directly support students in need of financial assistance. If you would like to designate which scholarship your donation supports, we can help you find a scholarship that matches your philanthropic goals. If you do not designate a specific area of support, your gift will go into the Annual Giving Campaign fund. This provides the College with invaluable unrestricted support for furthering the mission of the Foundation. WHY GIVE? Contributing to the Annual Giving Campaign is the perfect way to acknowledge the College’s value. Your gift demonstrates your appreciation for the many ways the college continues to contribute to students and the impact that has on our community. It is paramount that we maintain the ability to finance those things that take us beyond the
basics of instruction essential to a college. We are, and want to continue to be, a regional destination for learning. WHY NOW? We need your help now more than ever. As a public institution, JALC can no longer rely primarily on funding from the state and county, along with modest tuition and fees. In order to keep pace with the ever-increasing costs of maintaining the excellence that has characterized the JALC educational experience, we are relying on the generosity of our donors. JOHN A. LOGAN COLLEGE John A. Logan College is a diverse learning and teaching community committed to improving individual life and society through high-quality, accessible educational programs and engaged learning opportunities. Founded in 1967, John A. Logan College serves a large regional location and has helped give a quality education to over 55,000 graduates. Students can receive degrees or certificates in over 150 areas of expertise. Community of Giving 2013 • Page 10
CENTURY 21 HOUSE OF REALTY As the region’s largest real estate organization, not only does CENTURY 21 House of Realty, INC. have the largest team of award winning sales professionals to serve southern Illinois, they also recognize their obligation to use their organization to provide assistance and support to those they serve by giving back to a wide array of groups around the region that call upon them for assistance and support. "It is incumbent on business owners to always recognize that the success of their organization is based upon not only the product they produce or service they provide, but the dedication their customers have towards their business." said Richard Davis, owner and managing broker of CENTURY 21 House of Realty, INC.. It’s that dedication that CENTURY 21 House of Realty, INC. recognizes, and endeavors to reciprocate back to their customers. “As a business owner, it’s my obligation”, said Davis.
During the recent history-making recession, it became very difficult to fulfill that obligation of giving back. Nevertheless, when a call was received, every effort was made to accommodate, from putting food on the shelves of local food pantries to helping purchasing beds so children at risk have a place to lay their heads without fear. From passing out cookies & hot chocolate during a community Christmas party to show support for our American heroes, to supporting local foundations as well as chambers of commerce. From supporting local sports teams with T-Shirts, to supporting the American Cancer Society and American Heart Association. That’s the obligation and the philosophy of CENTURY 21 House of Realty, INC.. They have much to be thankful for and will continue to show as they give their thanks by giving back to the communities they serve.

These caring teenagers, our LifeSavers, develop their capabilities to listen carefully to their peers, make healthy decisions, cope with stress, promote loving communication with their families and others, and enhance their own self-esteem in order to live happier, healthier, and more productive and satisfying lives. The LSTC provides the services of certified trainers and a copyrighted three-day training program which has been evaluated and formally listed in the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) Best Practices Registry. While LSTC conducts the initial training, the program materials are designed so that local Advisors may ultimately conduct their own Training Retreats with continued support from LTSC.

Many of the schools have had the opportunity to host two events now and look forward to their turn each time. “It’s the easiest $20 you’ll ever donate to your kid’s school,” joked Gurine Billinger of the Carbondale High School Athletic Booster Club. “Drive a new car down the road and back and it doesn’t hurt a bit.” Fund raisers for civic organizations must be
approved by Ford Motor Company and are limited to not-for-profits that meet certain criteria determined by Ford. Last year, Carbondale Boys and Girls Club was the recipient of a $6,000 check for their event and more recently it was the proposed Carbondale Super Splash Water Park project that generated an expected $8,000 donation for their efforts. “We hope to be able to continue giving back to the communities that have given so much to us.” Rathjen added. “You can’t stay in business for 90 years without great community support and loyal customers. We recognize that and want to reciprocate accordingly.”

The Gift of Education & Independence When Colton from Harrisburg started public high school he was reading at a third grade level and doing math at a fourth grade level. His mom says, “Bullying seemed to get worse resulting in Colton losing his confidence and becoming socially awkward.” After his first year at Brehm School, Colton was doing algebra, increasing his reading ability, and developing social skills which included “dancing with a pretty girl”, according to Colton. His mom says, “These are all changes that wouldn’t have happened without the benefit of the financial aid received. Your generosity has given him back the dream of a brighter future.” Brehm School is a residential and day school for students, grades 6-12, with complex learning disabilities and differences. OPTIONS Transitions to Independence, a post-secondary comprehensive transitional program, guides young adult students with learning disabilities into independent adulthood. Our students come with a variety of challenges to academic, social or emotional success including Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Nonverbal Learning Disability, Communication Disorders, Auditory Processing Disorders, Processing and Memory Deficits, Tourette Syndrome, anxiety and other specific learning differences. Brehm and OPTIONS offer a unique holistic program that individually addresses each student’s needs, empowering students to recognize and optimize their potential throughout their lifetime. The Brehm School Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity, funds staff development, student activities, innovative projects, and financial aid at Brehm School and OPTIONS. Financial aid benefits families by offsetting tuition costs and assisting families who otherwise could not enroll a child for financial reasons. Recently, an anonymous donor pledged $100,000, to assist families with enrollment at Brehm/OPTIONS. This pledge will match donations to financial aid, dollar for dollar, up to $100,000. “You can double your impact and transform the young lives of students with complex learning disabilities by giving a gift for financial aid.” according to Russell Williams, Director of the Foundation. Tax-deductible donations in any amount may be made to The Brehm School Foundation, 1245 E. Grand Avenue, Carbondale, Illinois 62959 or online at www.Brehm.org/Foundation. BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF CARBONDALE In 2004, southern Illinois embarked on a commitment to a brighter future for many local children—one that will inevitably have a positive impact on the whole community. That year the Boys & Girls Club of Carbondale (BGCC) opened its doors to “children who need us most.” As part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, BGCC joined the nation's oldest, largest, and fastest growing organization with a primary mission of serving young people
from disadvantaged circumstances. For nearly 110 years, Boys & Girls Clubs have grown through the generosity of people who care about kids. Today, more than 4,000 Clubs reach some 4.8 million children and teens. Membership fees are low to enable any child to belong. By contributing time, talent, and treasure, concerned citizens help provide the resources necessary for Boys & Girls Clubs to change young lives.

Williamson County Child Advocacy Center
There are many ways that you can make a difference to the children in our community whether it is by volunteering your time and expertise at one of our events or through your generous donation. Your donation helps to ensure that abused children have a safe place to come to tell their story. Your donation helps to provide counseling for children and families who are dealing with the traumas of abuse and helps to provide transportation to court hearings and medical exams. But, most importantly, your support helps to ensure that each child has an advocate who will stand by their side and fight for justice.
Williamson County Child Advocacy Center provides support services to children under 18 and their non-offending family members when there has been an allegation of child sexual or severe physical abuse. Each child is assigned a child advocate who works one on one with the child and family as a support person from the point of outcry until there is resolution in the case. Our facility in Herrin provides a safe, homelike atmosphere for children to come to receive a forensic interview. Child advocates assist with the coordination of the forensic medical exam, counseling referrals, and provide support throughout the criminal court process. CAC promotes a team approach to reduce the trauma to the children and families during the investigation and prosecution of crime against the child. Statistics show that a report of child abuse is made every 10 seconds; 1 in 3 girls and 1 and 7 boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. And, in our 21 years of service, the Child Advocacy Center has helped almost 3,300 families affected by abuse in Williamson and Franklin counties. Our agency is funded in part with state and federal dollars, local monies including United Way, and through private foundations, donations and fundraising efforts. Each year, CAC hosts the Santa’s Gift House in which donated items are displayed in a “store,” which will be set up in Illinois Star Center Mall. Children between the ages of 4 and 12 are allowed to shop for Christmas gifts for immediate family members in their household. Last year, 400 children participated. CAC also hosts the annual Southern Illinois Kids got Talent event each Fall in which a group of dynamite teens put on a talent contest for CAC.
