Auditions for ‘Last Of The Red Hot Lovers’ are set for Monday CARBONDALE — The Stage Co. announces auditions for “Last of The Red Hot Lovers” are set for 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, and Tuesday, Dec. 10, in the East Theater at the Varsity Center for the Arts, 418 S. Illinois Ave. The comedy will open on Valentine’s Day. Rehearsals will begin Jan. 6. A copy of the script is available for reading at Carbondale Public Library. Cast members sought include one man, age 40 to 55 and three women, ages 30 to 50. The story involves a middle-aged, married, overworked and overweight Barney Cashman, who wants to join the sexual revolution, before it’s too late. He arranges three seductions: Elaine Navazio proves to be a foulmouthed bundle of neuroses; Bobbi Michele is a 20-ish actress who’s too kooky; and Jeanette Fisher, a gloomy, depressed and conflicted housewife who happens to be married to Barney’s best friend. For questions about the play or The Stage Co., contact Lee Brackett at lee.brackett@gmail.com or go to www.stageco.org.

Stage Co. presents ‘The 39 Steps’ CARBONDALE — The Stage Co. rings in the holiday season with “The 39 Steps,” described as an action-packed, comedic thriller. Show dates are Dec. 6, 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 in the Varsity Center for the Arts, 418 S. Illinois Ave. The play has been adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan and the film by Alfred Hitchcock. “The 39 Steps” started as a World War I espionage novel by Scottish author Buchan and became a Hitchcock film in 1935. It was later adapted for the stage and opened in London as a hit comedy, going on to Broadway in 2008. The play mixes a Hitchcock film classic with a juicy spy novel and a dash of Monty Pythonesque zaniness and is a fast-paced blend of acting and frenetic stage craft. It

is filled with puns, mysteries, laughter and suspense as Richard Hannay tries to figure out why all these people are chasing after him and what exactly are the 39 steps. The play’s concept calls for the entirety of the 1935 film to be performed with a small cast of four. One actor plays the hero, an actress plays the three women with whom he has romantic entanglements and two other actors play every other character in the show including heroes, villains, men, women, children and even inanimate objects. This often requires lightning fast quickchanges, and occasionally for them to play multiple characters simultaneously. The film’s serious spy story is played mainly for laughs and the script is full of allusions to and puns on the titles of other Hitchcock films, including “Strangers on a Train,”

“Rear Window,” “Psycho,” “Vertigo” and “North by Northwest.” The story revolves around urbane, bored Hannay who makes eyes at a mysterious woman at the theater but returns alone to his home, where the woman turns up dead. Coinciding with the run of the play is an art exhibit on display in the Varsity featuring metal artist Roberta Elliott and fabric artist Karen Linduska in an exhibit titled, “Nature:

Annual Holiday Concert Featuring Nathan Clark George and Mark Stoffel, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, Liberty Theater, 1333 Walnut St., Murphysboro. MURPHYSBORO — What began as a solo winter concert in January or February has evolved into a popular December affair, bringing to life the spirit of Christmas in the historic downtown Liberty Theater. This year’s Annual Holiday Concert featuring Nathan Clark George and Mark Stoffel is set for 7:30 Friday, Dec. 13. George, a Murphysboro native, first performed at the Liberty about 10 years ago, before volunteers launched a concerted effort to save and restore the venue. He started playing winter concerts annually, and

more and more people began to attend. In 2005, he joined fellow musician Mark Stoffel to talk about and record an album of Christmas music. From there, the two decided to try their hand at a holiday performance. Finding success, they decided to focus on that concert in the coming years. “Christmas is just one

of those times that bring people together,” George said. “We’ve seen it become a beautiful, lovely time for people to get together.” The duo continues to be the focus of the annual concert, but, through the years, the two have added other performers and hosted special guests along the way. Together, they perform a variety of

music, including oldworld hymns dating back centuries and more modern traditional Christmas tunes. This year, they will be joined by Henry Haffner, principle vocalist of the Lexington Philharmonic. The spirit of Christmas and family will certainly be in the air as these two men grace the small theater stage for another year.

The Ghost of Christmas Past visits Ebenezer Scrooge.

PADUCAH — Many actors and actresses have a holiday dream of stepping into the shoes of the crotchity Ebenezer Scrooge or the good-hearted Bob Cratchit. Not Russell Matthews, though; he’s content with his lessprominent role. The Mahomet native and Illinois Wesleyn graduate is entering his fifth season of portraying Fred, Scrooge’s nephew with a hard-to-rival love of Christmas, with the Nebraska Theater Caravan’s national tour of the beloved production “A Christmas Carol.” “It’s a great thing to come to a role and be able to revisit it year after year,”

said Matthews, who has understudied for the show’s leading characters, as well. “I think I’ve figured out new parts of his personality every year.” While Fred may not be the most prominent character in the show, Matthews said it’s still important to understand his motivations, what makes him tick. The character can still have a great amount of depth and personality, even if he’s not on stage as much as his colleagues. Fans in Southern Illinois have an opportunity to see Matthews’ portrayal of Fred when the production arrives at The Carson Center in Paducah for a 6:45 p.m. performance Monday, Dec. 9. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at www.thecarsoncenter.org or by calling 270-450-4444. While the story of “A Christmas Carol” may be a familiar one, Matthews said the performance will still be a worthwhile experience for fans of all ages. “There’s a reason classics are classics. They’re the best built stories we have,

and this is absolutely one of the best,” he said, adding that the Caravan has added little touches to keep the show engaging and entertaining for the last 35 years. “They create a real community among the actors. That really comes across in our version of ‘A Christmas Carol.’“ And for Matthews, Paducah is one of the closest stops to his hometown of Mahomet and his birthplace in Bloomington in central Illinois. Traveling through the area, especially during the holiday season, is a reminder of the family and holiday spirit that builds the core of the show itself. Last year, as the tour buses drove across Illinois on Thanksgiving Day, Matthews’ family gathered on an interstate overpass waving for him to see, so he knew they were thinking about him, too. “It was probably the sweetest moment I’ve ever had on tour,” he said.

KASKASKIA ISLAND — The 20th Annual French/Indian Celebration will start at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Kaskaskia Immaculate Conception Church. Participants will relive and remember the early tradition of the historic old church in Illinois’ French Colonial District, where the lily is considered a traditional flower of Christmas. According to legend, a Native American woman sadly made her way to the church one long ago December Day. Other members of the congregation, as in other years, were bringing a gift in honor of Mary, but this woman was very poor and was empty-handed.

Walking with her eyes cast down in sadness, she suddenly noticed lilies blooming through the snow and ice. She gathered an armful of the flowers to take to church as her gift. All were amazed. In a re-enactment of this, a procession of women, each carrying a lily, commemorate that miracle. Saturday’s celebration includes hymns being played by Jeffery Roscow on the 1878 pipe organ. Father Dave Corrigan will preside at a mass service that follows the ceremony,

where prayers in the Indian language as well as English are used. Refreshments will be served. To get to Kaskaskia, cross the Chester bridge, follow Missouri Highway 51 four miles, turn right on H Road, go seven miles, turn right onto Missouri Highway 61 and travel one mile into St. Mary, then turn right onto Old Channel Bridge leading to Kaskaskia Island. ‘Blue is the Warmest Color’ Lea Seydoux (left) as Emma and Adele Exarchopoulos as Adele in the film ‘Blue Is the Warmest Color,’ which centers on a 15-year-old girl (Exarchopoulos), who is moving toward adulthood and dreams of experiencing her first love. A handsome male classmate falls for her hard, but an unsettling erotic reverie upsets the romance before it begins. Adele imagines that the mysterious, blue-haired girl she encountered in the street slips into her bed and possesses her with an overwhelming pleasure. That bluehaired girl is a confident older art student named Emma (Seydoux), who will soon enter Adele’s life for real, making way for an intense and complicated love story that spans a decade and is touchingly universal in its depiction. The movie, which opens Friday at University 8 in Carbondale, is rated NC-17 for graphic sex, nudity, profanity and adult themes. It is in French with subtitles. — RottenTomatoes.com AP / SUNDANCE SELECTS

‘Out of the Furnace’ Woody Harrelson (left) and Christian Bale in a scene from ‘Out of the Furnace,’ a gripping and gritty drama about family, fate, circumstance and Justice. Russell Baze (Christian Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. When Russell’s brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from serving time in Iraq, he gets lured into one of the most ruthless crime rings in the Northeast and mysteriously disappears. The police fail to crack the case, so - with nothing left to lose - Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on the line to seek justice for his brother. The movie, which opens Friday at University 8 in Carbondale and AMC 8 in Marion, is rated R for vulgar language, brutal violence, gore, drug use and adult themes. — RottenTomatoes.com AP / RELATIVITY MEDIA

‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ Martin Freeman, as Bilbo Baggins, stars in the second triology of films adapting the popular masterpiece ‘The Hobbit’ by J.R.R. Tolkien. ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ continues the adventure of Bilbo, as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellan) and 13 Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. The movie, which opens Thursday at Carbondale 8 and AMC 8 in Marion, was directed by Peter Jackson and is rated PG-13. — RottenTomatoes.com AP / NEW LINE CINEMA
