A century-old building on Herrin’s main downtown street is bustling once again thanks to some entrepreneurship and strategic vision. Oh, and don’t forget the food. The Annex Coffee & Deli, which sits in the place of the highly popular former Annex movie theater, has grown substantially since opening its doors in 2011. Now with an expanded bakery area and menu, the Annex is offering a new selection of artisan breads, rolls and bagels. Deli owners Dr. Barry Vesciglio and Dr. Ted Van Acker don’t plan on stopping their improvement efforts any time soon. “Business is great and we feel over the past two years we’ve perfected our breakfast and lunch offerings,” Vesciglio said. “Now we are working on providing more dinner options, special events and developing our

Its “pick two” offering allows diners to try a wider variety of menu items, such as a half sandwich with soup, salad or pasta. Favorites also include the wide range of coffees and specialty drinks, as well as Italian pastries, cheese cakes cookies and cinnamon rolls. “We also do a cake of the month that can be purchased by the slice or a whole cake in our bakery,” Vesciglio said. Patrons can head into the Annex this month for a delicious Cannoli cake. Cakes are beginning to earn the Annex regional recognition. The deli fielded rave reviews from brides-to-be for its cake

Vesciglio says the Annex can cater any size party, from an intimate engagement dinner to an extravagant event. “We can also customize menu items to meet dietary concerns and individual tastes. As Herrin and the Annex continue to grow together, one thing is certain: This popular diner will always stay grounded in quality products and elite customer service.

Carle’s stories have been adapted, designed and directed by Morrow, with music by Steven Naylor and narration by Gordon Pinsent. “I see the objects and the characters I helped create as if they’re actually living,” Morrow said. “We’ve been able to find a way to bring them to life,
and the performers have been able to affect them with some emotion.” Tickets for the hourlong performance are $15 and $20 and can be purchased online at bentonciviccenter.com. For Morrow, shows like this are an opportunity to introduce new audiences to theater and hopefully hook them for years to come.
“There’s very little quality theater for 2-, 3-, 4-year-olds,” he said. “There’s a lot of great entertainment, but there’s very little good theater for young children. Local duo Zola Road puts out record, harmonizing way to success COUNTRY SCENE Vince Hoffard
ola Road was a mundane street on the outskirts of Harrisburg at the start of 2013, an ordinary place that flew under the radar and attracted little attention from the outside world, just like Brian Smith and Megan Wren. The 21-year old Wren is an X-ray technician at the Harrisburg Medical Center, studying ultrasound at SIU, where she is scheduled to graduate in 2015. Smith, 33, graduated from the SIU School of Law in 2005 and he practices in Marion, specializing in civil litigation and workman’s compensation cases. The two attended church together and each were fully aware that the other possessed high quality vocal skills. While neither aspired to pursue a solo singing career, last January they mutually agreed to collaborate on a couple tunes just for fun.
Z
From day one, the results have been jaw-dropping. Listeners are instantly captivated by the perfect harmony, swearing the pair must have been working together for years instead of weeks. “From the very beginning, it sounded so natural,” Smith said. “We knew very quickly that we had something special. We decided to work hard and see how far we could take this thing.” Wren says both members of the duo, who are actually distant relatives, have a long history of singing in church. “We grew up singing gospel music. That is where we learned to harmonize,” she said. Needing a name and a product to get established on the local music scene, the duo adopted the name Zola Road, the street where Wren was born and raised, then decided to record a CD to use for promotions. Equipped with a solid selection of original material written mainly by Smith, the newly formed Zola Road entered The Rock Recording Studio in Elizabethtown in March
and spent several weeks recording under the watchful eye of studio owner Joe Jenkins. “I wrote most of the songs we recorded, then Megan and I would work together to hammer out the arrangement,” Smith said. The result is an 11-track country/pop flavored disc titled “The Way You Burn Me,” which showcases powerhouse velvety vocal synchronization on a wide range of beefy material, including “Favorite Place,” “All I Want Is You” and a terrific cover of the Michael Jackson classic “Billie Jean,” that is slowed way down and turned into a soft ballad. A coming out party of sorts for Zola Road was entering the Texas Country Showdown. They were virtually an unknown act as they advanced through two qualifying stages to make it to the regional finals at the Herrin Civic Center during Herrinfesta Italiana in late
May. They finished in a very respectable runner-up position in the field of 10 contestants, narrowly missing first place by three points. “It was really good exposure for us,” Wren said of the strong showing at Southern Illinois’ premier summer festival. Smith added: “We met a lot of good people at the showdown. We were disappointed that we didn’t win, but we were able to get our name out to so many people. Our Facebook exploded after that weekend.” Up to then, the singers had operated in virtual anonymity, except to their closest friends. Now, the secret was out of the bag. “People at my office knew I was a musician and I had a band, not much more than that, until Herrinfest,” Smith said. “Most of my friends don’t know the extent of what we are doing and how

one of us anticipated the success we had,” Wren said. Smith said the duo will record a new album this year and consider expanding the duo into a full band, which would create a fuller sound and lead to gigs at bigger venues. Zola Road will perform at the Viva Harrisburg Casino Night set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 in the Southeastern Illinois College Foundation Center in Harrisburg. The event is a fundraiser sponsored by the Harrisburg Medical Center Foundation. VINCE HOFFARD can be reached at 618-658-9095 or vincehoffard@yahoo. com.

hard we are working to take it to the next level,” Wren added. Zola Road’s calendar was busy in the last half of 2013, with numerous shows at area clubs and wineries. At each stop, they expanded their fan base with shows filled with original material and covers of old and new pop and country material. The constantly evolving repertoire of the duo is as mixed as their influences. Smith is a big fan of songwriters and leans towards the music of The Beatles and Bob Dylan. Wren is drawn to the music of The Civil Wars and Shania Twain. The future is definitely bright for Zola Road. “Last year just blew away our expectations. Neither

Patriot games rebooted in ‘Jack Ryan’ Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit ** Rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and intense action, and brief language; starring Chris Pine, Kevin Costner and Keira Knightley; directed by Kenneth Branagh; opening Friday at ShowPlace 8 in Carbondale and AMC Centre 8 in Marion BY JAKE COYLE THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Having clung to the Russians as go-to villains long after the Cold War thawed, the movies find themselves current again with their favorite archenemy.
Cooling Russo-American relations have yielded an opening for the return of Tom Clancy’s CIA analyst, just in time for the Sochi Olympics. In the Jack Ryan reboot, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” Chris Pine takes over as the spy who was played by Alec Baldwin (“The Hunt for Red October”), Harrison Ford (“Patriot Games,” “Clear and Present Danger”) and Ben Affleck (“The Sum of All Fears”). It’s a decent legacy of a dark-haired, intellectual action hero. Ryan is a navigator of murky, reasonably realistic, international espionage worlds. He has neither James Bond’s preternatural suavity nor Jason Bourne’s
visceral butt-kicking skills, but instead anxiously finds his way with patriotic cunning. “Shadow Recruit,” which was scripted without a Clancy book by Adam Cozad and David Koepp, tells a new backstory for Ryan. Inspired by Sept. 11, he joins the Marines and is heroically injured in Afghanistan. During his recovery, he meets his eventual fiancee (a doctor named Cathy played by Keira Knightley) and is lured to the CIA by a mysterious recruiter (Kevin Costner, unconvincingly trying to exude a Donald Sutherland-like gravitas). He’s covertly embedded at a Wall Street bank where he uncovers a Russian plot
to buy up U.S. Treasury bonds, which he suspects will be sold off in a coordinated act of terrorism and currency devaluation. Surely, if Ronald Reagan (whose endorsement of Clancy’s first novel, “The Hunt for Red October,” propelled his fame) was still around, he’d swoon over a spy thriller based on the harrowing threat of inflation. Ryan’s investigation leads him to the Russian oligarch Viktor Cherevin, played by Kenneth Branagh, who also directed the film. Certainly, it takes a bite out of the nationalistic politics when the movie’s villain is played by a knighted British actor known for his

Shakespeare work. Branagh endows his film with (mostly) oldfashioned competency — something often lacking in today’s action films — but little to distinguish it from superior thrillers that have come before. The best thing here is the sleekness of modern Moscow, where
much of the action takes place. The film is filled with a nighttime mix of neon and taillights set against the Kremlin and other monuments — a handsome enough rendering to send a viewer back to the recent Bond, “Skyfall,” for those elegant Shanghai scenes.
