Top 20: Riverview Mansion Hotel & Levee Lounge BY JOE SZYNKOWSKI FOR THE SOUTHERN
When Tony Eckert bought the Riverview Mansion Hotel two years ago, he aimed to update the historic haven without compromising its reputable charm. Mission accomplished. Eckert and his wife, Beth, have worked diligently in transforming the hotel’s offerings, establishing both the Levee Lounge and the Fork N Cork Bistro. The additions make the hotel a unique place for customers to wine, dine and snack, all while taking in the ambiance that has made Riverview a local favorite since it became a hotel in the 1920s. “I’d call the atmosphere ‘Bohemia Classy,’” Tony laughed. “It’s just as cool as it ever has been and I would say a little better.” The Lounge features a couple dozen of the most popular local craft beers, as well as a stable of more standard imports. Tony also says it’s hard to beat his selection of local wines. “Staying local is important because it gives you the variety from the same old flavors,” Tony said. “People don’t want the same swill every night. There are a lot of great local options out there for both beer and wine.”
PROVIDED BY RIVERVIEW MANSION
Riverview Mansion Hotel & Levee Lounge in Golconda offers both a restaurant and lodging creating a Southern Illinois destination getaway in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest.
The specialty at the Mansion’s new Fork N Cork Bistro is a tasty soup, salad, and breadsticks buffet for only $6. Delicious and fresh soups are rotated in and out depending on the calendar, as well. Also available at the Bistro is a variety of artisan meat and cheese platters that serve as the perfect complement to a bottle of wine. Hot pizzas are available all day until midnight, and diners can choose from a variety of other snacks, including burritos, sandwiches, cheese sticks and mushrooms. “We really hope to bring

our pizzas up a notch,” Tony said. “We’d like to make a name for ourselves with gourmet pizza.” The Eckerts are now focused on improving their craft and fostering more community collaboration. They host tastings from a local winery once a month, bring in popular local bands and accommodate large-size parties. “We’ve had karaoke, a Halloween event and even a costume party,” Tony said. The Eckerts urge customers to like Riverview’s page on Facebook to receive regular updates on upcoming events.

Learn all about swamp rabbits Saturday at Cache River Wetlands CYPRESS — A program on “Swampers: The SemiAquatic Rabbit” will be presented from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 in the Cache River Wetlands Center, 8885 Illinois 37 South. Experts say swamp

initiatives in the last two decades have shown promise for the swampers. Joanne Crawford, an SIU doctoral candidate, will be sharing her research and tools of the trade used in studying these odd
creatures and their interaction with Eastern cottontails in the Cache River Wetlands. For more information, call the Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge at 618-634-2231. — The Southern

For more information, call 618-942-6115. “It keeps getting better every month,” says Andrews, a Mount Vernon native. “People that have been coming to the show every month are starting to realize that we truly have some amazing talent right here in our own back yard.” Andrews will be in constant motion throughout the night. She plays banjo and serves as leader of a three-piece bluegrass band that includes rhythm guitarist Becky Swank and stand-up bassist Ronnie Cobb, both of Johnston City. She also helps emcee the program and provides a sidesplitting comedy routine by conjuring up a stellar Minnie Pearl impersonation. Her husband, Sam, plays straight man Stringbean. Pearl and Stringbean (aka: David Akeman) were gigantic figures on the Grand Ole Opry and the “Hee Haw” television series. “About three years ago, my husband and I went to a Halloween dance dressed
C
as Minnie Pearl and Stringbean. We stuck the costumes in the attic and forgot about them,” Andrews recalls. “When it was decided the opry needed a little comedy in the mix, I volunteered to bring back Minnie Pearl and Stringbean. “Then I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, what have I done.’ I frantically got on line and watched a bunch of her old videos and bought some of her CDs. I put together a new skit each month and use a lot of her original material.” Starting with a game plan copied straight from the world famous Grand Ole Opry, organizers of the Southern Illinois Opry adopted an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” attitude during its initial year of operation in 2013 and gave patrons a mixture of country, gospel and bluegrass music, flavored with a splash of comedy. The strategy worked. Crowd sizes steadily increased for the monthly shows, which deliver a wide variety of musical genres in a family-friendly environment. Opry staff
makes a point to vigorously recruit the best available talent from the immediate area for the event, often scheduling prime acts months in advance. “We are not trying to make any money on it. All we want to do is break even and give local music fans a place to bring their families and enjoy a night of great entertainment,” says Richard Melvin, one of the board members that helps manage the event. Melvin is a longtime supporter of local music, dating back to the 1970s when he was active in the career of the late Billy Cole Reed of West Frankfort, who was relentlessly pursuing a recording career in Nashville. Melvin is also a member of The Old Dogs Band. Cache River is a band composed of five highly skilled instrumentalists, including phenomenal lead guitarist Steve Jones, keyboard wizard Kevin Breen and rock-solid drummer Eric Westray. All three are former band members of local rock ‘n’ roll legend Gary Jones. Rounding out the band is

rhythm master bass guitarist Jeff Landis. Jeff Mears is the powerhouse lead vocalist for Cache River, a band that has served as opening act for Brantley Gilbert, LoCash Cowboys and many others. Mears pours emotion to classic southern rock anthems and is pitch perfect on covers of current and outlaw country tunes. South of 70 is another progressive country band, listing Jerry Jeff Walker, Gram Parsons, Jason and The Scorchers, John Prine and Johnny Cash as influences. Members of the band include: Jeremy Lloyd, rhythm guitar, harmonica and vocals; Charles T. Lueker, piano, fiddle, rhythm guitar and
vocals; Jeff Bradley, lead guitar and vocals; Del Herbert, lead guitar and banjo; Jeff Miller on bass and Mike Horn playing drums. Zane & Donna King are a Nashville-based gospel duo with hits “Hallelujah, Jesus Saves” and “Shine” to their credit. They have collectively produced over 500 albums for other artists and have written hits songs for several gospel stars. Zane King is famous in Music City for his work on steel guitar. He has performed at the International Steel Guitar Convention in St. Louis and recorded “Made Of Steel,” an instrumental steel guitar CD that is a combination of country,
gospel and jazz fusion. “Learn the basics, then create,” King says, describing his individual style on the complex instrument. “I have spent my entire musical career waking up every day and trying to live in my own musical space.” King is owner of the Journey Press Music publishing company and Journey Records, a label that has recorded music by Danny Funderburk, the Dixie Echoes and the Greenes. Donna King has recorded an album titled “Song Of Noel.” VINCE HOFFARD can be reached at 618-658-9095 or vincehoffard@yahoo.com.

With all the talk about fact-based films and how accurate they should or shouldn’t be, it’s worth noting that some stories are best brought to screen as simply and purely as possible. This is especially true with a film like “Lone Survivor,” Peter Berg’s expertly rendered account of a disastrous 2005
military operation in Afghanistan. War is messy, and politics are messy. But Berg has wisely chosen to focus pretty squarely on the action, and to present it as straightforwardly as possible. And he’s executed that approach with admirable skill, down to using autopsy reports to get the number of wounds a soldier suffered exactly right. “Lone Survivor” doesn’t have nearly the sweep of a major war film like Spielberg’s “Saving Private Ryan.” But the action scenes — basically, one protracted, harrowing firefight — feel as realistic as any we’ve seen on the screen for some time. That firefight, for those unfamiliar with the story
(Berg also penned the screenplay, based on the memoir by former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell), took place on June 28, 2005 in the craggy mountains of Afghanistan’s Kunar province. As part of Operation Red Wings, Luttrell and three fellow SEALS were positioned on a hillside, tracking a Taliban commander in the village below, when they suddenly encountered a few local shepherds. Their agonized decision on what to do with those shepherds, one of them a teenager, led to a string of events that ultimately resulted in 19 American deaths. Of course, the title, “Lone Survivor,” and the
fact that Luttrell is played by the movie’s star (Mark Wahlberg, in a strong and moving performance) tells you much of what’s going to happen from the getgo. But that doesn’t hurt the film’s immediacy and power. In fact, you may have a hard time sitting still. Berg opens with footage of real Navy SEAL training and the extremes it reaches — some might call it unnecessary and overly worshipful, but for people who don’t know a lot about the SEALS, it’s helpful and effective. We’re also given a sense of the lighthearted camaraderie at the military base, in between operations, as the men joke about wives and
