Top 20 Restaurant of the Week: Bennie’s Italian Foods BY JOE SZYNKOWSKI FOR THE SOUTHERN

Bennie’s Italian Foods doesn’t often change its menu. Why would it? The hotspot on Marion’s Market Street has been serving up popular pasta, sandwiches and rib-eye dinners for decades. So when the restaurant unveiled a new line of pastas — a roster that included spicy Cajun offerings — it was met with an excitement from its hungry throng of loyal patrons. “The new pastas really draw a lot of attention,” said Anthony Heinrich, Bennie’s assistant manager. “People have been talking about it a lot.” And while the new pastas garner rave reviews, it’s the classic portion of Bennie’s menu that will help the restaurant continue along on its path of growth. From the garlic-infused house dressing to the delectable steaks, Bennie’s has perfected its most popular items over the years. “We like to stick with the basics,” Heinrich said. “People still come in for the tamales, too. They’re coming in for the chili and cheese, the salads and the sandwiches.” Bennie’s delivers straight to doorsteps within the Marion area and is

presently ramping up its catering efforts. “We’ve catered quite a few weddings and other big events,” Heinrich said. “The menu is outstanding and I think people will be impressed by our prices, which are very competitive.” Its conference room sits up to 12 people and is the perfect nook for productive — and delicious — business meetings. Around the corner, Bennie’s banquet room sits 85 people and has played host to many special functions, holiday parties and family reunions. Whether it’s a largescale party or an intimate dinner for two, the

Bennie’s staff is ready to serve up your favorite Italian dish. “We couldn’t do it without the guys in the kitchen,” Heinrich said. “They work harder than people realize, some of them are working from 8 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. They put in the work and definitely don’t get enough recognition.” Regular customers sure take notice of the quality of ingredients and preparation that goes into their dishes. That’s why Bennie’s has remained such a commodity in downtown Marion. “We strive on great service,” Heinrich said. “And we invite anyone

written in 19 years. He said Jaclyn’s spirit was guiding the pen and words freely flowed. “Jaclyn’s death lit a fire in me and let me know it wasn’t too late. She is with me, pushing me to get back into the music game,” he said. For the last three years, Gerdes has been focused on turning a long-time hobby into a full-time vocation. Opening a show for newcomers Burns & Poe, then winning $1,000 by taking first place in a regional qualifier for the Texaco Country Showdown in 2010 was affirmation he was doing the right thing. He eventually would move to Nashville were he has slowly started making progress. Gerdes has had the opportunity to record his songs at premium studios, where Presley Tucker harmonized with him on a couple songs. She is the daughter of legendary Tanya Tucker. He has also been a victim of Nashville’s dark side, where a con man ripped him off for $600. He says everyday is a learning process. Playing in small clubs, his original tune “Haggard Fan” attracted the attention of songwriter Jeff Tweel, who had written the chart-topping “Mornin’ Ride” for Lee Greenwood and “Everytime Two Fools Collide” for Kenny Rogers and Dottie West. Just the title was enough to gain Tweel’s interest, because he had inked “5:01 Blues” for the iconic Merle Haggard. He contacted Gerdes and helped him tweak the tune by “changing a few words.” It gives him a rock solid song to showcase. A demo of the song is available on

YouTube. Gerdes will be appearing at 2 p.m. Saturday for a free acoustic show at the Owl Creek Vineyard in Cobden. In May, he will be a featured performer at the Southern Illinois Opry at the Herrin Civic Center. “At my age, I know I’m not going to sit the world on fire down in Nashville, but I feel like I have some fresh ideas and something new to offer,” he said. “You can strike gold with something that has been right in front of your face for a long time. You just didn’t see it. David Lee Murphy did it when he wrote ‘Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not’ for Thompson Square. How long have we heard that phrase?” Gerdes says meeting and collaborating with Murphy, a songwriting superstar from Herrin, is at the top of his wish list for 2014. “I just want to get my foot in the door,” Gerdes said. “Right now, I’m concentrating on songwriting. I’m working hard at creating high quality original songs. The word on the street down here is that the music is going to start coming back around to a more traditional sound and I can just feel it.” The son of a traveling salesman and beauty shop operator, Gerdes grew up in Benson, which is 30 miles from Pattonsburg. He was the ninth of 10 children in his family. He started playing guitar when he was four and joined his dad’s country band when he was 10, playing his first gig on New Year’s Eve 1980. Taste of the Grain event ‘Shrek, The Musical’ coming Jaimee Paul presents tribute comes to Copper Dragon to the Marion Civic Center to female singers Saturday

CARBONDALE — The Southern Illinois Irish Festival is sponsoring the Taste of the Grain from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 in Copper Dragon. The fundraising event features a Scottish single malt whisky tasting, appetizers and live music on Scottish pipes, harp, flute, keyboard and guitar. Tickets are $30 per person and participants must be 21 or over. Advance reservations are recommended by calling Mike Shanahan at 618-549-3090. The occasion for this celebration of Scottish music and drink is the 255th birthday of Scotland’s great poet and songwriter, Robert Burns, composer of the New Year’s Eve, “Auld Lang Syne,” a song about the days of the composer’s childhood. Burns’ birthday has become a day for celebrating all things Scottish. The tasting will include whiskies from the lowlands and the highlands of Scotland and a single malt from Ireland for comparison. More information is available on the Festival website at www.silirishfest.org.

CARBONDALE —“Shrek The Musical” will be performed Jan. 31, Feb. 1 and Feb. 2 in the Marion Cultural and Civic Center. The musical will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2. “Shrek The Musical” is based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film and brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to life on stage. In a far-a-way kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre – not a handsome prince, shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a villain with a temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen

other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand…and his name is Shrek. The musical will be presented by Kre8ive Fine Arts Academy, a new nonprofit, charitable and educational corporation that focuses on providing opportunities in the arts for students of all ages, as well as creating opportunities to give back to the community. Tickets for “Shrek” are $15 each and are on sale at the Marion Cultural & Civic Center Box Office. For more information, call 618-997-4030 or visit www.marionccc.org. — The Southern

MARION —Jaimee Paul will present “At Last … A Tribute to the Great Girl Singers of our Time,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 in the Marion Cultural and Civic Center. Jaimee Paul and her Jazz combo, led by husband Leif Shires, on trumpet, will strive to take audiences back to a 1940s jazz club complete with the voices of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Rosemary Clooney and others. “At Last” is a tribute to the fabulous female vocalists of the 40’s. One of the reviews of Paul’s voice comes from the Jazz Times, “Paul is blessed with a glorious voice (indeed, there’s

significant evidence of (Aretha) Franklin’s raw majesty), one that deserves to travel under its own powerful steam.” Paul is a Nashville recording artist with several albums including “Hymns of Prayer,” just nominated for a 2013 Dove Award, “At Last” the album that ended 2012 with the No. 1 female vocalist in the Jazz Downloads category, “Melancholy Baby,” “After The Ball” and a Christmas album as well. Tickets for the Saturday show are $25 and $35. For more information, go to www.marionccc.org or call 618-997-4030. — The Southern
