MARION — The Herdman children, and their tale of taking over a Christmas story, are back. This weekend’s showing of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center will be the third for the Paradise Alley Players, said Joyce Hope, the group’s president. The play is part of the theater group’s five-year rotation of Christmas shows performed at the civic center. “Every time we get a new group of kids,” Hope said, who is directing the show. “They bring a different feel to it, even though the lines are the same, these kids make the
lines their own. Our Little Angle of the Lord is hilarious.” About 20 children from age 4 to 14 and eight adults make up the cast that will present the story of the six Herdman children. Written by Barbara Robinson in 1972 and later turned into a popular movie, the story centers on the six children known for being the worst children in history. One place safe of their antics is the church, that is until the children learn they can get refreshments at Sunday school. But when they arrive, they end up taking over the lead parts in the church pageant. Along the way, they learn about the nativity
for the first time and apply their own interpretations to its story, sharing with the community a rediscovery of the meaning of Christmas. “It’s a real kid show, but even for people who don’t have children, it’s a delightful little story,” Hope said. The Paradise Alley Players is in its 39th year of performing, opening the community theater group up to the region for auditions. It produces four performances a year, and also features a playwright competition, a Children’s Theatre Workshop and a Summer Lab Theatre. njmariano7@gmail.com 618-499-4597
