CARBONDALE MAIN STREET DOWNTOWN HOLIDAY GUIDE

The Secret to Smart Holiday Shopping: Shopping Locally In old black and white movies, there are always couples window shopping, families walking down snowy streets looking for gifts. Every store is lit with items from toys to clothing to chocolates. It’s a nice kind of Holiday memory that gets us in the spirit. Unfortunately, Holiday shopping is usually much different. Whether you’re toting bags full of goodies through a crowded mall on December 24th or ordering online and paying 20% more for shipping, shopping for gifts is generally a chore. There is no black and white picture of smiling children and happy couples; usually, there are screaming children and the electronic sound of scanning your gifts alongside of groceries and pharmacy items. It’s stressful, time-consuming, and costly. Of course, this has been true for many years. The days of old are, well…days of old. Or are they?

In Downtown Carbondale, we still have lighted shops. Families and couples can still walk hand in hand on snowy (or, in Southern Illinois, not-so-snowy) streets. They can still peer into windows for the perfect gift. No, there’s no URL, or food court, but there are unique gifts, a feeling of nostalgia and over thirty restaurants in a ten block radius. Check out the following pages in this shopping guide, and you just may find the gift you are looking for. The secret to shopping smart this Holiday season is shopping locally. You DO get a better gift, you DON’T pay shipping, you DO support the local economy and hey, you just might get that fuzzy feeling that you got watching black and white movies growing up. You just might (gasp!) have fun. If nothing else, you’ll save yourself some stress and find more time to watch those movies on the couch.

Varsity Center for the Arts The Varsity Center For The Arts is proud to bring great events and cultural growth to the Carbondale Community. Coming in December, The Good Doctor promises to be a fantastic show, with locals as stars! Mark your calendars for this season’s activities with the VCA!

Upcoming Events At The Varsity Center for the Arts December 11-13: In May 2008, the Stage Company and Carbondale Community Arts announced a partnership to develop the Varsity Center for the Arts (VCA). As the home for local arts and cultural activities, the Varsity Center for the Arts will enable actors, singers, writers, painters, filmmakers, sculptors, dancers, and musicians to share an imaginative pulse with the community. It will create excitement, attract business, and foster rich diversity within our community and the region. The Carbondale Community is extremely excited about this new addition to Downtown. The Stage Company and Carbondale Community Arts have devoted considerable time and effort to achieve the short-term goal of renovation of parts of the VCA to provide a venue for Stage Company productions. The two organizations have also continued to strengthen their collaboration to provide a foundation for their longer term goal of restoring and renovating the exterior and interior of the Varsity Center for the Arts. The vision for the interior renovation of the facility anticipates accessible performance and exhibit venues for cultural, civic, and educational presenters from across the region.

Evening Entertainment BY MEGHAN COLE

Anyone from Southern Illinois will agree, Downtown Carbondale is the place for entertainment. When the sun goes down, Carbondale is where everyone comes for a great time. For the person who likes to grab a coffee after work with a co-worker, or for the person who wants to take a date out to dinner, Carbondale is perfect. For the music fan who loves to catch concerts of all your favorite local bands, and yes, for the person who needs to call a cab by the time midnight rolls around…Carbondale is perfect for all of you. Do you know how I know? I’ve researched. Not-so-painstakingly, I’ve been to coffee shops, concert venues, restaurants, lounges, and bars all over downtown. Call it a perk of my job. If you like a low-key atmosphere, try The Blue Martini, a new bar at 218 E Main. Have a cocktail or cappuccino with friends, or try an appetizer after work. On the Strip, relax at Melange. They offer a nice wine list, high-end scotches, dinner entrees and great coffee. The Grotto below the Newell House is another spot for great martinis and conversation. More the call-a-cab type? Downtown Carbondale has lots of music venues, including the soon-to-be-back Hanger 9, Tres Hombres, Booby’s, PK’s, and more. For no or low cover, you can hear local as well as regional music all night long. Many also have great weekend drink specials. The Cellar has shuffleboard and the best Bloody Mary’s in town. Gatsby’s and Stix offer pool seven nights a week! Or, go to Club Traz to dance the night away; their new outdoor area is sure to please. The scene in Carbondale is different from every other town in Southern Illinois. Students mingle with professionals. Gourmet restaurants succeed next to sports bars, which prosper next to snack shops. Martini bars sit next to dance clubs, with offices and hair salons upstairs. If you are from Southern Illinois, I’m sure you already know Downtown Carbondale is the place to be…but make sure to remember to check it out for all occasions. Holiday entertaining is easy with great restaurants, lounges, music venues and bars. Grab that cup of coffee, go out for dinner, and celebrate! After all, the Holidays are only here once a year!
