TOM BARKER / THE SOUTHERN

Shawnee High School’s Jonnie Ellet receives her certificate from Southern Illinoisan Editor Gary Metro during the SISHSA Banquet.

Honoring student leaders Local students receive recognition for the hard work, dedication BY TOM BARKER THE SOUTHERN

eing a leader in a community is no simple task, particularly while undergoing the strains and challenges of a high school education. For that reason, the Southern Illinois Society for High School Achievement and the Southern Illinoisan are proud to honor the region’s most outstanding high school seniors for their accomplishments as students, athletes and community servants. More than 200 seniors from 35 Southern Illinois schools were recognized at this year’s 40th annual SISHSA Banquet, chosen by their teachers and school administrators as real leaders among their peers. The young awardees gathered for the dinner and presentation Tuesday at the SIUC Student Center, treated to some encouraging words by guest speaker Stan Irvin, pastor at Carrier Mills First United Methodist Church and former New York City lawyer. Irvin told of his experiences prosecuting murder cases in the city, dealing with the worst of humankind, and challenged the group of young community leaders to do good for society and live their lives in a way they could never regret. “Whatever you do in your future, try to find at least one thing through which you can make society and humankind a better place,” Irvin told the students. “As I look through your achievements, giving to those around you, you’re well on your way to doing that.” Irvin said it was humbling for him to get to speak to some of the region’s “best and brightest” and acknowledge their actions, encouraging them to take their ambitions into the world. “They are the hope of the future, but they’re also doing so much right now in impacting their schools and their communities,” Irvin said. “So, we just wish them congratulations and the best of luck in their future.” Presenting award certificates to each honoree was Gary Metro, editor of The Southern Illinoisan, and the students were introduced by teachers or administrators from their own schools. With years of dedication behind them and the world of higher education ahead, the soon-to-be high school graduates appreciated the recognition they received. “I feel honored,” said Jessica Cogdill, from Herrin High School. “They only choose six out of the school and all the teachers vote, so it’s a real honor to be here.” “I’ve really challenged myself through high school, and I’m really excited that it’s all paid off,” said Kelsea Ashton of Carterville. “I’m glad to get recognition for all the work I’ve put into high school,” said Sarah Frankland-Searby, of AnnaJonesboro Community High School.
