oreville High School seniors Aaron Brenningmeyer, Raeghan Goins, Dallas Melot and Raechel Ward glowed brightly Tuesday during the 44th Annual Southern Illinois Society for High School Achievement Banquet in SIU Ballrooms. They were among 175 high school seniors from 32 local schools honored for their achievements during the 2013-14 school year. Each student was honored and given an award by Editor Gary Metro and Community News Editor Marilyn Halstead, both of The Southern Illinoisan.
“It’s really kind of cool,” said Brenningmeyer, who will attend Shawnee Community College to pursue a career in nursing. Melot is attending Lindenwood-Belleville on a football scholarship and will study exercise science. Goins, the senior class president, will attend Shawnee Community College. She eventually wants to teach high school English. Ward will attend SIU, pursuing degrees in mathematics and education. Two other Goreville honorees, Shon Messmer and Connor Seavers, were not in attendance. They were playing in a Goreville High School baseball game. Sitting at a table next to the Goreville seniors were their mentors, administrators and teachers. “Something like this looks good on their transcript for college and job applications later in life,” said Goreville math teacher and senior class sponsor Tammy Patterson.

She was joined by Goreville High School Counselor Anna Craig and senior class Sponsor Allison Robison. Students like the Goreville seniors were introduced by school administrators and faculty. Six from each school were chosen on merits of academics, leadership and other skills, said Christopher High School Counselor Sandra Zawaske, who organized this year’s banquet. She began in January, sending letters to each school with information detailing the banquet and the opportunity for each school to select their top six graduating seniors. “It depended on each of the schools for their faculties and staff to pick the best. Some decided on the top six academically. Some included leadership abilities and athletics,” Zawaske said.
