Barton House For luxurious, but comfortable guest accommodations visit the Barton House, run by innkeepers Linda and Jerry Goforth, The Goforths, who are both retired from the Illinois Department of Corrections, were working as Red Cross first responders to disasters when they realized that often those affected by the disaster filled the local hotels and the volunteers were scrambling for lodging.

They decided to open a bed and breakfast to provide housing for the volunteers and Barton House, named for Clara Barton, founder of the Red Cross, opened 12 years ago.

The unique setting on 20 acres of grounds, boasts beautiful gardens and is minutes to SIUC, the mall, the Wine Trail, golfing, Giant City State Park and Crab Orchard

Lake.

Guests have included, judges, politicians, college parents and professors. They have hosted guests from as far away as France, Germany, Scotland and England.

But there is much more to Inn keeping then most people think.

“Some people think of a B&B as just an extra room in someone’s house,” said Linda Goforth. “But we have to take a food sanitation course and have health inspections two times a year and meet stringent IBBA codes.”

Goforth, who serves on the board of directors of Carbondale tourism, says she enjoys the relationships she develops with her guests and networking for Carbondale businesses.

“I know the area,” she said. “We’ve had parents come to graduation after their kids have been here four years and they don’t

know what to do. We can tell them enough activities to stay a week and sometimes they stay over.”

The Barton House offers quiet, spacious accommodations in a pastoral setting and private seating areas.

Goforth, an award winning gourmet cook, including Best of Show at the Illinois State Fair, prepares the full breakfast. She calls it “an experience.”

A Little Bit of Italy in Herrin, IL Walk into Louie’s P & R, and you know something is different. There’s just no place like it in all of Southern Illinois. Moments in Time Sydney Ambos did not know that her role in a play at John A. Logan College would lead to her becoming one of Southern Illinois’ most sought-after photographers, but it did.

“I was inspired to pursue photography during a local theatre production,” she recalls.

“I took photos backstage of some of the other performers in the show, and when I showed everyone, they wanted to buy them from me.”

Before long, Ambos, who grew up taking pictures, took on the art form as the proprietor and photographer of Artistic Photography by Sydney in Herrin. Today, she offers the full gamut of photographic services, including weddings, family events, and portraits, and specializes in baby, retro-style pin-ups, and boudoir photography. She says pin-up and boudoir photography has been quite popular with women from across the region.

“It’s often women who are getting the portraits as a gift for their significant other or they want to do something fun and different

for themselves, they want to feel gorgeous” she says.

She is very detail-oriented and takes great care in making sure clients get just what they want. Artistic Photography by Sydney has recently added a larger studio, and she’s always adding to the costuming, backgrounds, and props available for the photographic sessions. Even though she takes her work and her art very seriously, she enjoys having fun and getting creative in the studio and on location.

“With every shoot, I try to do something a little bit special or unique,” Ambos says.

“Personally, I’m kind of a clown; I’m goofy and weird and that makes people laugh. I’m not afraid to act silly and I’m not ashamed to do bad impressions. My clients know that they won’t look as silly as me and that makes them more comfortable and that leads to better photographs”

Mary and Regge continued to serve all of Southern Illinois with the highest standard of professional service and personalization.

Upon Mary’s death in 2010, the legacy of Walker Funeral Home passed down to Regge. To this day, the dedication to service established by his parents is left unwavering.

In 2011, Regge purchased the HuffmanHarker funeral Home to continue the Huffman family legacy of service since the early 1900’s.

G.R. Huffman was a business-minded individual who was raised in Carbondale. He started Huffman’s Store in the

mid 1850’s and then opened Huffman Furniture and Undertaking. He was the proud owner of one of the first three cars in the city of Carbondale. In 1925, he established the first stand-alone funeral home in the area. In 1987, Huffman Funeral Home was purchased by Harold Harker, who spent many years serving the families of Carbondale as well as surrounding areas. Upon his retirement, Harold sold his business to Regge.

“You get to choose your own flavor and make your own creation,” said Don Johnson, owner.

“We have a friendly environment and unlimited possibilities of flavor combinations.”

The yogurt and toppings, which are 45 cents per ounce by weight, offer choices from fresh fruits to chocolates to nuts to cereals and more.

Your personalized fro-yo creation starts with your choice of frozen yogurt or ice cream custard.

“The frozen yogurt is made from fresh ingredients,” said Jill Johnson, owner and resident yogologist. “The fruit added to the yogurt is fresh; it’s not a puree or syrup. The Blueberry Tart Yogurt is made with real blueberries. The Peanut Butter Yogurt is made with real roasted peanuts. We promote ‘good-tasting wellness.’

Nutrition is an important part of developing a great frozen yogurt and this is embraced along with producing a product that people will eat and enjoy. Our frozen yogurt contains viable counts of live active cultures—four cultures (one is a probiotic) that are not only certified at the time of

manufacturing, but also in the finished product.

The end result is a healthier frozen treat with less calories than traditional ice cream but all the great taste.

Our ice cream custards resemble a “St. Louis” style. They do not contain the active cultures found in the frozen yogurt and are more of a traditional ice cream. It is very creamy and oh so delicious.

Cool Spoons trumps other fro-yo shops when it comes to toppings.

“We offer so much more than a traditional

store who offers 40 to 50 toppings,” said Don Johnson. “We offer more than twice that.”

The topping selection is astounding.

“Some people think it looks like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” Jill said. “The kids pile their yogurt with candy.”

It seems everyone has their favorite.

“Chocolaholics will get chocolate yogurt and put every chocolate item in the place on top,” Don said. “The health conscious may choose fresh fruit. Everybody has their own preference and that’s what’s cool and so much fun.”

The Johnsons also visit local orchards for some of their fruit toppings.

“We try to use locally grown berries and fruits,” said Don. “Strawberries are in season right now and we have worked with McNitt Growers in Murphysboro to provide some local flavor.”

Locally grown peaches, when they become available, will soon be on the Cool Spoons topping list.

Along with great yogurt and toppings, Cool Spoons is a great place to hang out.

“It’s more like a coffee shop vibe,” Don said.

“It’s a family atmosphere which appeals to

everyone, crossing over from seniors to younger kids. We have a couple of groupings of leather chairs that are in constant use.”

Cool Spoons is also a great “date night” according to Don. “We had a couple who had their first date here and told us they are now getting married,” said Don. “That meant a lot us.”

Customers range from college students to baseball and soccer teams to church groups.

“Our environment is a warm meeting place that everybody enjoys,” Jill said. “We even have a chalk board area for the children and the young at heart.”

Cool Spoons offers both outside and indoor seating and free Wi-Fi Other menu items include fat-free smoothies, assorted sodas, bottled water, energy drinks, and flavored coffees. Coming this fall they plan to offer hand dipped treats such as chocolate covered strawberries and hand dipped caramel apples for purchase in addition to the frozen yogurt and ice cream.

Each building requires a rolled metal panel to complete construction, and it was hard to find a reliable source for metal that was near by. That was not a hurdle for this innovative couple. The simple solution was to manufacture the panels themselves, so in February of 2009, Heartland Metal Sales was started and the company grew even more.

“With thirty years in the postframe building industry, it was a natural decision for us to offer these metal services as well,” Leslie Andrews said. “We know what kind of quality is needed to build a good building and how to make it look good and how to get the job done quickly and on time.”
