Walker Funeral Home During a time of need, you want to call someone you can count on. Walker Funeral Home, the oldest continuously family owned and operated funeral home in Carbondale, has been “Dedicated to Service” and committed to serving the families of Southern Illinois for more than 62 years. We offer a full range of services with a trained staff to give you a personal and professional service. Along with tradition, the Walker family welcomes change. Our largest funeral home, located at 112 South Poplar Street in Carbondale, Illinois, is our original location which was built in 1850 and is listed as a Historical Home of Carbondale. In 1950 after graduating from St Louis University School of Mortuary Service, James W. Walker came to Southern Illinois to start his own funeral business and through the years, added two more funeral homes, one in

Hurst and another in Alto Pass. James married Mary L (Shafer) Walker in 1962. In 1966, Mary became the first woman to graduate from Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Mortuary Science and Funeral Services Program She and her son, Regge Walker, worked side by side with James until the time of his death in 1996. Mary and Regge continued to serve all of Southern Illinois with the highest standard of professional service and personalization. Upon Mary’s death in 2010, the legacy of Walker Funeral Home passed down to Regge. To this day, the dedication to service established by his parents is left unwavering. In 2011, Regge purchased the HuffmanHarker funeral Home to continue the Huffman family legacy of service since the early 1900’s. G.R. Huffman was a business-minded individual who was raised in Carbondale. He started Huffman’s Store in the

mid 1850’s and then opened Huffman Furniture and Undertaking. He was the proud owner of one of the first three cars in the city of Carbondale. In 1925, he established the first stand-alone funeral home in the area. In 1987, Huffman Funeral Home was purchased by Harold Harker, who spent many years serving the families of Carbondale as well as surrounding areas. Upon his retirement, Harold sold his business to Regge. The Walker family knows the rising cost of funeral services today may have you concerned. We want to help. At Walker Funeral Home, we realize that not everyone wants or needs the traditional funeral service, nor can they afford the high cost of funerals. We offer many alternative funeral services to meet your every need including: traditional funeral services, memorial services , church services, graveside services, cremations, body

donations, pre-planning counseling and even funeral home tours . Walker Funeral Home is continually looking for ways to better serve families in their time of need. Every year during the holiday season, we have our Tree of Remembrance for the families we have served throughout the year. Crystal ornaments of angels, doves, and butterflies adorn our trees. The name, birth and death dates of the loved ones who have passed are delicately displayed on the ornaments for the families to come in and view before taking home to appreciate on their own trees. Many families are requesting more relaxed or casual services. Walker Funeral Home is there to help you plan a specialized service for your loved one. Remodeling projects have improved the exterior of the Alto Pass location, new chapels, selection room and parking. The addition of our new lead car and

funeral coach, gives the funeral procession safe and reliable transportation to the cemetery. We have also added an elevator to our Carbondale location which provides families with easy access to our selection room. The newest addition is Walker’s on-site crematory facility, established in 2003. Cremation is becoming an alternative and addition to the traditional wake. The Walker family and staff are committed to service with security and peace of mind. The loved ones of those we serve will never leave our facility for the cremation process. We can also arrange for viewing and visitation prior to the cremation process. Additionally, we can provide information on government benefits, information on veteran benefits, out of town arrangements and help with filing insurance claims Walker Funeral Home also specializes in international services.

We encourage you to speak with our trained staff about a prearrangement, choosing the service and possible merchandise (i.e. casket, vault, cemetery property, etc.) before the services are needed. A carefully pre-planned funeral service can be comforting to your family members as it spares them from facing emotionally and financially difficult decisions at the time of death. We can help you plan the service that is right for you. You will receive a no obligation price quote on your customized service. Our history of caring for our family in Southern Illinois makes us a trusted partner when people have made their prearrangements with us knowing that it is a service we offer at no charge and is absolutely confidential. After 62 years, Walker Funeral Home remains “Dedicated to Service” and committed to serving the families of Southern Illinois.

The staff of Holt’s Tire, LLC has one simple philosophy: take care of every customer as if that is the only customer. It works very well. For over 25 years, Holt’s Tire has served the Carbondale area with the best tires and service for passenger cars, SUVs and light trucks.

Known most widely for tires, including Bridgestone, Dunlop, Firestone, Mastercraft and Michelin brands. Holt said his shop is not limited to just a few makes, and he can get customers practically any type of tire made. He said his shop also offers services such as

alignment, shocks, alternators, belts, hoses, oil changes and lubes and some electrical work. “Because we are not as big as some of the ‘big boys,’ we do have to try harder. That means better and friendlier service in most cases,” owner Mark Holt said.

Burgers Hand Made

Fat Patties At Fat Patties, it’s all about the ingredients. Owner Lance Jack has made it his mission to use locally grown meat and produce for his menu, which features 1/3-pound burgers with endless ways to make your “masterpiece” burger: “We are featuring Simply Omega Beef from Creekstone Farms,” Jack said. “Simply Omega Beef is high in Omega-3s, which should be an important part of our diet and are considered heart healthy” According to the American Heart Association, Omega-3s also play a big role in fighting inflammation and reducing risk of artery

blockages–both of which are important for heart health and can provide protection for memory and brain health. Omega-3s, which our bodies do not produce, promote cardiovascular health; can boost the immune system; promotes healthy skin; and stabilizes blood sugar levels, which can lessen the severity of diabetes. “Fat Patties burgers have always been good,” said Jack. “But now that we’re using Creekstone beef, they are even better tasting and better for you.” Fat Patties also serves locally grown grass fed and finished beef from Lick Creek Beef, locally raised bison from Bison

Bluff Farms and local pasture-fed, pork from Cecil Farms. “In season, we also try to use locally grown produce,” Jack said. The attention to locally grown, fresh, high quality ingredients makes a difference. “The food quality and taste is important to us and to our customers,” he said. “We are using superior grades of meat across the board.” Jack’s goal is to serve the best burger possible, from top to bottom. “We are proud to be able to offer Simply Omega beef,” said Jack. “At Fat Patties, our burgers taste great and are heart healthy.”

Murdale True Value If you ask George Sheffer, owner of Murdale True Value in Carbondale, “What’s new?” he might answer – “Everything!” Sheffer recently finished a year-long store remodeling project. “We are totally remodeled,” said Sheffer. “As always, we strive for our mission, which is “customer delight” That philosophy of “customer delight”, the customer’s experience in the store, and how easy it is to shop, also fits in the store’s mission of teamwork, attitude and how people are treated. The remodeling project started from the outside in. We even moved the front door,” Sheffer said. “The door is even automatic to make it easier to go in and out of the store.” The floor to ceiling remodel was designed with the customer in mind. Sheffer worked with representatives from True Value, Brand Source Appliances and Just Ask Rental to help redesign the store for “customer delight”. Departments are now easier to find. The flooring was replaced and they added porcelain tile in the major appliance department. “We even have better lighting,” Sheffer said. “We also made our check out faster with speedy credit card processing.” The appliance area has room for more displays of new appliances including Subzero, Wolf, GE, Frigidaire, Samsung and Speed Queen with working kitchens for demonstrations. The Just Ask Rental Department is now in one place with a special desk for customers to sit while planning their event or party with a sales associate. “We can help

with a simple kid’s party to an elegant wedding or other event,” said Sheffer. “We have it all from inflatables to tables, chairs and dishes.” The rental department also features audio visual equipment, carpet/floor care, earth moving and lawn care equipment, generators, ladders, scaffolding, heating/cooling/dehumidi fiers, power tools, and carnival games and concessions. If you don’t see what you want, just ask. The lock department was expanded, moved and rearranged to make it easier to find. “We have the largest selection of

keys and services in southern Illinois including key chips and remotes,” said Sheffer. “We can make keys here and save the customer a lot of money, or we can do a service call to the customer’s location.” According to Sheffer, the Murdale True Value lock shop has the capability to open a car remotely and make a customer another master key if their key is stolen. The stolen key will be deactivated. Sheffer also studied the store’s hardware inventory, clearanced out items that weren’t selling and added thousands of new items. “We worked

with True Value to see what items were selling in other True Value stores so we would have it,” said Sheffer. The knife department is also expanded with one of southern Illinois’ biggest selection of different brands of pocket and kitchen knives. Among the new products are collector pocket knives and professional-grade kitchen cutlery. In addition, the pet department has expanded with new items for your dog or cat with monthly “hot deal” items and the store is also carrying more decorative plumbing and hardware fixtures. The

remodeling project has given them room to carry more air and furnace filters with many different sizes and qualities. The nuts and bolts department has the largest selection in the area and has a unique way to keep their inventory. “What we do differently is that a customer can buy individual nuts, bolts and screws,” Sheffer said. “It’s hard to see what you need in a package.” Not sure what you need? Just bring it along. “You can bring in the nut and we can get you the right bolt,” he said. It’s not just the building that is improved. Team members have been

retrained and educated about new products. “They really stepped up and learned new things,” Sheffer said. “Team members attended classes on paint, Stihl power equipment, propane and nuts and bolts, just to name a few.” Even the store fixtures have been changed. “They are all uniform,” Sheffer said. “Every four-foot section is remerchandised according to True Value standards to make us a Destination True Value.” Stop by today to see what’s new—inside and out—and experience Murdale True Value’s “customer delight.”

Hughes Dental Arts Centre Dr. Christopher Hughes in not your average dentist. His concern is not just about how his patients teeth work, but also about how they look. It’s a concept around which he’s built his entire Herrin practice around. Even the name Hughes Dental Arts Centre reflects it. “I think the name emphasizes the artistic aspects of dentistry,” Dr. Hughes said. “As much as dentistry requires medical science and training, it also requires skills in artistry and aesthetics.” That means that patients not only turn to Dr. Hughes and his staff for routine dental care such as cleanings, filings, extractions and root canals, but also for improving their smiles. “We do cosmetic dentistry. We call it smile

makeovers,” he said. Services include teeth whitening, straightening, fixing chips and cracks or other damaged areas of teeth. Services added in 2012 include Botox and Juvederm injections. Hughes grew up in Herrin and is a graduate of the SIU School of Dental Medicine in Alton. He also has completed advanced training in aesthetic and reconstructive dentistry. Recently, Dr. Hughes achieved board certification in Implant Dentistry through the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry. “We’re the only office in southern Illinois that does complete implant care,” he said. “We do the implant surgery as well as make the crown or denture that fits the implant(s). That makes

us unique. In most other settings, you go to one dentist for the surgery and then another for the restoration. We do the entire procedure here without the need for another doctor.” For those patients who are a bit nervous about their trip to the dentist, Hughes also offers intravenous sedation. “We sedate patients intravenously (I.V),” he explained. “It is ideal for patients that want to get dental care done but are too scared to proceed. I.V. makes them feel sleepy, relaxed and less anxious.” Regardless if the care is a routine examination and cleaning or more advanced services, the staff of Hughes Dental Arts Centre focus on helping people look and feel their best.

Sterling Mattress Factory Owned by Mike and Treena Wicoff, Sterling Mattress Factory in Herrin, creates handcrafted mattress sets, Memory Foam sets, adjustable beds, lift chairs, custom-size mattresses, headboards, and accessories – everything for a comfortable nights sleep. “The handcraftsmanship of our mattresses sets them apart from massproduced products and provides ‘old-fashioned’ value that our customers can’t see, but it’s there,” Mike said. “For example, instead of using the standard one-and-half pound foam, we use two to five pound. It’s a difference you really can’t see, but it raises the quality of our mattresses. Mostly it greatly decreases body impressions; and our customers love that!” Mike said that the

biggest trend today is the no-flip mattress. Sterling however, offers both the newer no-flip and the traditional two-sided mattresses, so customers can have their choice. Their goal is the find a match for the customer, no matter what style of mattress it may be. Sterling mattresses are all in stock and ready to go, with custom orders usually take 2-10 days; most less than a week. Sterling Mattress Factory cuts out the retail store part of the equation and sells direct from the factory to you. More than 26,000 satisfied customers from across Southern Illinois are testimony to the store’s success. “We can produce a quality hand-crafted mattress for about the same price or less than a mass-producing product,

Mike said. “Yet, we put in the extra value that others don’t.” In addition to having competitive prices, the friendly and knowledgeable “Sleep Factory” staff makes the both shopping and delivery experience a pleasure. Master craftsman Brian Wicoff is the production manager and keeps the operation running smoothly and efficiently to ensure quality and on-time delivery. “Professional Sleep Expert” Bryan Shroeder not only crafts the mattresses, but also sells them. Rounding out the craftsmen staff at Sterling Mattress Factory is Joe Colvin. Wicoff says, “We’re dedicated to giving the people of Southern Illinois a good night’s sleep.”

A-1 Buildings A 1 Buildings have been in business for over 20 years, and build approximately 100 buildings a year. That is a lot of crews and coordination, but it is a labor of love, say the owners David and Leslie Andrews. Each building requires a rolled metal panel to complete construction, and it was hard to find a reliable source for metal that was near by. That was not a hurdle for this innovative couple. The simple solution was to manufacture the panels themselves, so in February of 2009, Heartland Metal Sales was started and the company grew even more.

“With thirty years in the postframe building industry, it was a natural decision for us to offer these metal services as well,” Leslie Andrews said. “We know what kind of quality is needed to build a good building and how to make it look good and how to get the job done quickly and on time.” Heartland Metal Sales produces a variety of metal panels for buildings, roofs, commercial buildings, farm structures and carports. The company can provide metal for commercial, residential and agricultural application and complete accessory trim

components. “We also offer Energy-Star qualified metal sheeting for building. This provides a tax incentive as well as energy savings that can help reduce costs.” she said. Andrews said that the company offers nearly 20 colors of metal, all produced to specifications given by the customer. Any length is available and with the wide variety of colors, we can work with our customers to make the buildings fit in with their existing homes. “Our customers have been pleased that we take the time to work with them

and find out what their needs are. Our building knowledge, coupled with the fact we can manufacture on site, gives us the perfect product for them. Quality, looks and an affordable price. It seems to be working. We’ve been at it now for over 20 years and we have a great crew.” She said. Even as a new company, Heartland Metals holds true to the same philosophy that customers of A-1 Buildings have come to appreciate – high quality products and an excellent reputation. “People deal with us because of our honesty,” David Andrews

said. “We work hard to make sure our customers get the kind of job delivered we would want.” Heartland Metals and A-1 Buildings serve about a 150 mile radius and include portions of Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Kentucky. They can be reached at their factory in Pittsburg, Illinois at 618- 9835909 or 618-983-8600. www. heartlandmetalsales.com & www.a1buildingsanddooors. com website or email us at heartlandmetalsales@ mychoice.net & a1buildings@ mychoice.net.

working on our Fall Farm Crawl, which includes over 20 local farmers, ranchers, wineries and craft breweries that will span 5 counties in Southern Illinois. The self-guided tour will highlight how important a thriving local food systems is for a healthy community. This will be our most extensive effort yet in helping our shoppers put a face to the farm, so to speak! What is your best deal? Certainly our Basics program tops the list. Basics are name brand products that we sell for

the lowest price possible. It’s kind of like a sale that we have every day on all the staples milk, eggs, flour, sugar, meat, cheese... as well as things like supplements, diapers, baby food and feminine care products. It’s a great program, but we also have great deals in our bulk department where we carry over 200 products ranging from whole foods like rice, beans, grains, nuts, sugars and flour to soup mixes, cereals, snacks and candy. It’s great because you can buy as much or as little as you want and the savings are

significant, because there is little packaging. What makes your business unique? We are unique because we are a co-op. Basically that means we are owned by the community we serve, which makes us uniquely responsive to our shoppers’ needs. We want good food for a reasonable price, and we work with community members, business and civic leaders and other cooperatives to make things better. What are you most proud of? I had a very lovely weekend. We had dinner

with our son and daughter-in-law. I enjoyed a beautiful Sunday with my husband, our son and daughter-inlaw with our three dogs. When I would have weekends like this in some of my other jobs, I would wish it could go on and on, but even after working at the Co-op for eleven years, I can honestly say that I looked forward to coming in to work this Monday morning and I do every other day, too! Why should people shop at your business? Because we rock! Really, folks should shop with us

because when they do they are helping us reinvest in our community by giving donations to small nonprofits and larger charitable organizations. Shopping with us helps small-scale family farmers, local entrepreneurs and artisans – all of whom add to the diversity and success of our community. Anything else you would like to add? There is no penalty for not being an owner everyone is welcome to shop in our store. Also, we accept LINK.

J&B Foods Jeff and Brenna Burnett met and fell in love while they were both working in the Cape Girardeau SaveA-Lot grocery store as managers. In April 2005, the couple became proud owners of their own Save-A-Lot store located in Carbondale, Illinois. “While Save-A-Lot is known throughout the US, we are proud to be a locally owned business that can offer big savings, sometimes up to 40%, to our local customers,” says owner Jeff. “We take pride in our meat and produce departments, with the quality being very important to us.” Brenna specializes in produce and is proud of the selection that they have to offer. If you have any questions

please feel free to ask for her or any employee in the produce department. Jeff says he has always worked in a grocery store, even getting a start at an early age in the meat department. While he loves all aspects of the grocery store, the meat department is what he loves best and is his strong suit. All of the meat at their Save-A-Lot store is fresh cut and ground daily. “We carry a wide selection of USDA Select or Choice beef,” Jeff says. “We are always happy to accommodate special requests. If someone rings the bell and says they want a steak cut two inches thick, we’ll do what it takes to give the customer

what they want. Your satisfaction is guaranteed and we know you will be satisfied if you try anything from our fresh meat selection.” While Save-A-Lot may carry their own label of products, they are generally made by the big name brands, which you can also buy there. “Just try our brands you will be surprised.” “We are proud to own a business here. I also think it’s good that people know that we’re locally owned and operated and I enjoy working with the customers. If you have any suggestions to make us better please feel free to share them with us. Thank you to all our customers, we appreciate your business.”

A Taste of Italy in the Heart of Southern Illinois... The DiMaggio family’s tradition of authentic Italian food, family atmosphere and generous portions will make you feel like you are sitting around your “Italian” family table. “Where you are here, we are family,” said Angie DiMaggio, one of the owners. “I want to bring my customers a little bit of Italy, with great food and great service. We cook with love.” The DiMaggio family started out cooking pizza for their “other” family since they came from Sicily in 1973 and started the family business in Fairfield, Ill. Francesca and Gaetano DiMaggio’s authentic Italian recipes are now used in seven family owned pizza places throughout Southern Illinois. The DiMaggio’s children and grandchildren are now running the family businesses. A new DiMaggio’s is opening soon in Pinckneyville, Ill.

Son, Sebastian, who has been the chef at the Carbondale location since it opened in 2004, is also Angie’s husband. Other family members also work at the restaurants. Family is important at DiMaggio’s and that’s how they treat their customers—like family. “They are like guests in my home. I have my family, and also the family that works for me.,” said DiMaggio. “That’s how I feel about them.” Along with their authentic pizza, the DiMaggio’s expanded the restaurant in Carbondale to include pasta, appetizers, soups, salads and sandwiches. The authentic recipes and the freshest ingredients are important for all their menu items. “We make our own sauce and dough, and bake our pizzas in a stone oven,” said DiMaggio.

DiMaggio’s favorite is the thin crust pizza. “When it comes out of the oven, I still get the craving after 40 years,” It smells so good.” The menu also includes appetizers like homemade bread sticks, bruschetta, grilled portabella strips, and toasted four cheese ravioli. A few of the salad choices are Mediterranean, Caesar, Italian and Antipasto. Along with spaghetti, which is always a family favorite, other pastas include Vesuvio fettuccine alfredo, spinach Florentine, ravioli, cheese saccochetti, beef tortellini lasagna, portabella ravioli and linguini tutto mare. Cheesecake and tiramisu and other desserts, along with beer and wine are also available. The lunch menu, which is served

until 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, offers good food, lunch portions, reasonable prices and quick service. Combination specials include pasta and salad or salad and pizza for $7.99, or pasta and sand for $8.99. Italian beef, the Sicilian sub, ham and cheese, a meatball sub, Italian sausage and Italian chicken sub are a few of the sandwiches offered. “Our lunch size portions are a great way to try something new,” DiMaggio said. “Don’t be afraid to try something new; tell the server what you like and ask them for suggestions.” At DiMaggio’s you might hear the Italian words, “vene mangia,” which means “come eat.” For authentic Italian food, made by the DiMaggio family with love, come eat with your Italian family at DiMaggio’s.

JoCo Pools – Mosquito Authority “After building pools for over 25 years, it bothered me that my clients couldn’t even use their pools during certain times of the day because of mosquito infestation. I am proud to offer a safe way to rid yards of these pests” says Joe Cohen, owner of Jo-Co Pools. With warmer weather approaching, everyone is dreaming about their summer plans. Some will travel, but many people choose to stay at home and enjoy their summer in their own backyard. A backyard is a haven, a place to spend time with family and friends. Nothing can wreck those plans like mosquitoes. Those nasty blood suckers not only leave itching whelps, they also carry a

host of diseases. In the past, your only defense was to purchase citronella candles or to fumigate yourself with smelly insect repellent. Now you have a choice over these traditional methods. At The Mosquito Authority, we spray your yard, not you. Using a synthetic version of the chrysanthemum plant, we apply a barrier spray to your yard once every three weeks, breaking the life cycle of the mosquito. After two barrier sprays we guarantee that you will be able to virtually have a mosquito free backyard. In fact, we are so confident in our product that if you are bothered by mosquitoes in between sprays we will come out and spray again

free of charge. The Mosquito Authority not only sprays residences, but we have Special Event spraying also. If you have a special get together planned and are worried mosquitoes will put a damper on those wonderful plans, then event spraying is for you. We come the day before your event and then several hours before to make sure you will be able to enjoy your event without being bothered by mosquitoes. We are the only company in the area spraying yards to make them free of mosquitoes. If having your summer plans uninterrupted by mosquitoes excites you, visit www.bugsbite.com or call 800-709-1190.

Grumpy’s Smokehouse If you’ve not made a stop at the sweet smelling restaurant at the intersection of Rt. 13 and 148 near the Williamson Co Airport, you’re missing the fact that Grumpy’s Smokehouse is quickly becoming a Southern Illinois favorite. While there’s really no story behind the Grumpy’s name, there is a story behind the great tasting food at the restaurant, especially the barbecue, says co-owner Jenny Harris, who explains her husband (and restaurant co-owner) Mike has always had a passion for cooking great barbecue. “He really started doing it as a hobby, smoking pork” she recalls. “Everyone always told him how good it was and he always wanted to have his own restaurant. His enjoyment of cooking and

feeding people is what brought him to this.” Today, there’s something fresh on the smoker every day. The restaurant is already known for its ribs, but barbecue pork shoulder and butts also have devotees. The brisket sandwich is big in size and in taste. “Everybody talks about that brisket sandwich,” she adds. “Barbecue is our specialty.” There’s pork, turkey and chicken being smoked, too, but Grumpy’s is more than just great barbecue. The restaurant has a full menu, with something for everyone’s appetite. There’s an array of sandwiches, fresh fried catfish, salads and plenty of appetizers to choose from as well. All of it is prepared to order from the freshest ingredients. “Everything is

homemade,” Harris says. Grumpy’s features a convenient drive-through with family packs and barbecue and smoked items available in bulk, plus they also offer catering, from casual to elegant. “We can do as little or as much as our catering customers like. Our job is to make their job easier,” she says. The catering menu features everything from hors d’oeuvres to salads and light lunches to buffet as served meals, including options of pasta, barbecue and smoked items and even prime rib. They can bring it to you or host up to 40 guests at the restaurant. Regardless of your tastes and whether it’s dine-in, carry-out or catered, you’re sure to go into Grumpy’s and leave happy.

Hoarder Sports Inc. The idea of Hoarder Sports Inc. started two years ago when Bill Paul was looking at his collection of fishing gear in the garage and realized it might be justified as hoarding. With most hunters and fishers, they will generally have a large collection, with multiples of many items. When Christine Paul retired, the official plan started to take shape. They built a building in their backyard behind the garage and started planning the designs of their new clothing line. Once they had the designs ready they went to Silkworm in Murphysboro, explained the concept, and asked for help with printing the shirts. Silkworm then helped finalize the

Page 26 Thursday, June 20, 2013 The Southern Illinoisan

designs and started silkscreening the shirts and sweatshirts. Since April of 2012, when everything really got going, they have created five designs and are in the process of getting the website finished. They currently offer adult sizes small to 5X, with youth and ladies cut sizes coming soon. You can find Hoarder Sports Inc. at local festivals such as the Apple Festival and John A Logan Hunting & Fishing Days. When they are not at local events they operate out of their garage and their merchandise can be purchased off their website www.hoarders portsinc.com. The best deal that they are currently offering is their fishing shirts white, gray

or royal blue for only $12. Chris says she is most proud of her husband’s unique idea and how well they have been received in the community. “It has been a lot of fun!” One of their designs that they are the most proud of is their gun design. It shows a variety of guns arranged on top of the constitution with a banner stating the second amendment. In addition to the gun design they also have a deer hunting design, a turkey hunting design, a fishing design and a water fowl design. Chris and Bill are proud to be starting a business in the local community and are looking forward to see how much they will continue to grow.

Southside Lumber Two established Southern Illinois businesses are joining together When customers step into the modern lumber showroom that is South Side Lumber in Herrin today, one would be hardpressed to imagine its' humble beginnings back in 1946. The origin of South Side Lumber began when Claude Smith, Sr. and Guy Smith decided they didn't want to be coal miners anymore. The two brothers combined their talents and their money and opened the original lumber yard in Herrin, which was on two lots in the same location where the business has been for the last 67 years. Within four years, the Smiths built lumber sheds; and,

in the 1950's, they built a block building to house hardware. In 1952, Claude Jr. began work at the store. He and his wife, Alice, soon acquired the land around their existing store; and today, the business sits on a large six-acre building complex with nearly 85,000 square feet of buildings housing offices, showrooms, hardware, and building supplies. They managed the store for the next 40 years. Kent Smith, the only son of Claude and Alice, came home after he graduated with his MBA from Baylor University. Today, the showroom boasts dedicated space for kitchen displays, showers and baths, as well as an ever-expanding flooring area, with all the latest

trends on display. Employees of South Side have the experience and expertise in the building trades to help the commercial and residential customer alike. As business needs have evolved, Kent sought to add a higher end element to store for customers seeking home improvements. Enter Kreative Design Showcase in West Frankfort. Since 1983, owners Mike and Linda Kathalynas, have been creating beautiful kitchens, bathrooms and specialty rooms for clients all across Southern Illinois. Now as a showcase center for not only their products but those trusted brands of South Side Lumber, they can make customer

dreams a reality. Their larger showroom will allow for more floor samples and allow customers to see how their end project may look in their home. Linda, a kitchen designer by trade with nearly 30 years experience, will listen to your needs and desires during a free in-home measurement and consultation, then give you free quotes with computer-generated designs made just for your home. Once you decide on the design and components of you project, she will even give personal attention to detail and quality during every step of the installation. Assisting Linda in West Frankfort is Eric Oleson, who holds a

masters degree in Architecture Design and has a wonderful eye for unique design elements. At the Herrin location, Sarah Groves, a certified interior designer with over 5 years experience and Jaret Wyatt, a graphic arts specialist with over 10 years experience, have joined the design staff. With new eyes and design concepts come new opportunities for customers to have the kitchens and baths of their dreams. The business was built on the lumber and hardware materials, for which contractors all over southern Illinois still count on today. South Side Lumber serves an area within a 45-mile radius of Herrin. Shoppers now have the

convenience of buying online at www.sslumbr.com, from which over 70,000 items that can be shipped the next day directly to homes and offices. Kent Smith says of the company's success, "our dedicated employees put in long hours and hard work to serve our customers. We have grown because of our good service, our loyal customers and the support of southern Illinois. As customer needs have changed, we have adapted our way of doing business. First Bank and Trust of Murphysboro Back in 1889, a group of community leaders decided Murphysboro needed a bank. There were about 3,700 people who called Murphysboro home, a loaf of bread cost about three cents, and that bank evolved into what today is First Bank and Trust Company, Murphysboro’s only home owned and operated bank. Over the years, First Bank and Trust grew from its opening assets of $69,547.28 to nearly $70 million today. As Murphysboro grew in population. First Bank and

Trust was an integral part of the growth, supporting businesses, manufacturing, and agriculture. There were hard times, too, from a depression, wars, crop failures and the Tri State Tornado that devastated homes and schools, and the very fabric of life. As the area faced enormous challenges, First Bank and Trust continued honoring its roots in the community. Today, successful projects that foster stability and community spirit are a mainstay of a philosophy

of progress. From the Southern Illinois Symphony and Music Festival, Apple Festival, Logan Museum, Relay for Life, church festivals, to scouting, and countless other community events, First Bank and Trust has consistently maintained a position of financial leadership combined with community service. “I believe the success of Murphysboro is in direct correlation with the success of the bank,” Bank President and CEO Michael Cripps says. “We’ve been here for over

120 years; we know everyone and we know their needs. That helps us be in service to our community and meet those needs.” The growth of the area is dependent on the financial support of those who care about its future. First Bank and Trust of Murphysboro, still locally owned and operated for 124 years, will continue to provide the stability those founders pledged, and offering the most modern and advanced banking services. Today, First Bank and

Trust offers three locations, including one in nearby Carbondale. There are four automatic teller machines available and a new one coming soon on the south side of Carbondale’s University Mall. Making banking convenient, easy and friendly is a hallmark of the way First Bank and Trust operates. “We are proud to be a true community bank,” Cripps adds. “Our customers can come in and talk to the decision makers and the owners. They don’t have to wait on

the corporate office somewhere else to make a decision.” Those factors — doing business locally and supporting the programs of Murphysboro and Jackson County — will continue to be at the forefront of First Bank and Trust in the future. Cripps says it is a very bright future. “I think we have an unlimited future,” he says. “There are things that we can do as we continue to grow to continue to serve our customers and our community.”

SIU Credit Union SIU Credit Union is celebrating 75 years of serving Southern Illinois. Chartered as the Jackson County Teacher’s Union in 1938, the SIU Credit Union has evolved into a community credit union. If you live or work in one of the 11 counties served by the SIU Credit Union, you can be long to the credit union. “We’re here to serve our members and to serve our communities,” said Dennis Schaefer, the president and CEO of the over almost-30,000 member financial institution. According to Marketing

Director Karli Feldhake, one difference between the credit union and a traditional bank is that credit unions operate on a cooperative principle, every member customer is an owner. “We are memberowned, not serving a paid board of directors or outside owners,” Feldhake said. “It is this cooperative approach that allows us to provide better rates and better service.” Just $5 purchases customers a share of ownership. One unique characteristic of credit unions is that members users of credit unions are

the owners, each purchasing a share in the entity as part of their initial deposit. Profits from the credit unions are returned to members as higher interest rates on savings or other investment accounts and lower loan rates. Members can also benefit from a program called “shared branching” which expands the credit union’s six branches (Carbondale East, Carbondale West, Marion, Massac County, Energy, and a new branch in Harrisburg) into thousands of locations nationwide. branching is also convenient for college students. . “You can go into any one of the 5,000 participating credit union branches just like you would into one of our locations,” Feldhake said. Members of the SIU Credit Union also have access to more than 65,000 free ATMs around the country — a network is larger than those of some national financial institutions, including Bank of America. Customers can also make deposits, which include an image of the checks they’ve deposited

at the ATMs. New services also include a free mobile banking app. “Members can manage their account from their mobile devices, including check their balance, pay bills and transfer funds,” said Feldhake. Members can also apply for a loan, including private student loans, completely from the credit union’s redesigned website are in place. Another new service is the Consumer Common Cents Saving Program. When members who enroll in the program make a purchase with

their ATM card, which is tied to their checking, the amount is rounded up to the nearest dollar and deposited in their savings account. “It helps our members to build savings pretty quickly,” said Feldhake. The SIU Credit Union also supports the community by organizing “cash mobs” to encourage purchases at local businesses. The SIU Credit Union will celebrate their 75 years of service to the community with future Business After Hours and a “Welcome Back to School” promotion.
