Family Foot and Ankle Center There’s something special about a hometown physician; someone who cares not only for patients, but rather who knows and understands the region and its people. Dr. Mindy Moore of the Family Foot and Ankle Center of Southern Illinois is one of those physicians. Originally from Carterville and a graduate of both John A. Logan College and Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Dr. Moore opened the Family Foot and Ankle Center in Herrin last fall following graduation from the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in North Chicago and a three-year surgical residency at Chicago’s Sacred Heart Hospital. “I wanted to come back home,” Moore said. “I saw a need for a podiatrist in my home area and I am glad to be here.” She said her patients benefit from her office’s central location and convenient appointments. “I really enjoy seeing patients,” she added. “I like that we can get them in quickly and I love meeting and talking to people from around southern Illinois and being able to help them.”
The Center is a full-service podiatrist practice, treating everything from ingrown and infected toenails, bunions and heal pain to more complex issues including diabetic foot care and ankle problems. Always, Dr. Moore’s first concern is with the patients’ wants and needs. “I’m not one to talk patients into things they don’t want to do,” she explained. “I try to get them the care they need and get them back up and running as quickly as possible and without surgery.” In cases where surgery is necessary, Dr. Moore has staff privileges at area hospitals including Herrin Hospital, Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and Heartland Regional Medical Center as well as several area surgery centers. While the Family Foot and Ankle Center of Southern Illinois may be one of the area’s newest medical facilities, Dr. Moore plans on being part of the region for years to come. “I want to continue to grow my practice right here. I don’t plan on going anywhere; this is where I’m going to be.”

Swain’s Furniture in West Frankfort has so much furniture and accessories to choose from it takes five buildings to hold it all. “We offer a large selection of new furniture and used furniture and antiques, all in one company,” owner Neil Swain said. He said that the store offers more than 50 different mattress sets from six

All of it in a setting without hype and pretenstion. “We are regular folks selling affordable quality furniture to regular folks,” Swain said. “We’re carrying on the legacy of Zookie Swain to help those we can, better our town and have faith in ourselves and our loyal customers.”

Plaza Tire Service Our Mission “Is to treat everyone as we expect to be treated” - Vernon “Pee Wee” Rhodes
Plaza Tire Service, Inc. was founded early in 1963 by Mr. Vernon “Pee Wee” Rhodes. It was originally known as Plaza Car Wash., at that time doing business strictly as an automatic car wash service. The business did well except on rainy days. In order to shore up the company’s financial base, the business expanded into an auto clean-up and detailing service for local automobile dealerships. Along with servicing these vehicles, the company started selling tires to the
dealers as they were needed. The operation required a seven day work week, using Sundays to purchase retreads to be sold to the dealers. After a while a retreader rented part of the car wash building, thus sharing the rent and giving the company a convenient source for tires. One year later the retreader met with financial disaster and Plaza Car Wash, Inc. purchased his operation from the bank. A 1964 one ton Chevrolet truck was included as part of the
Page 6 Thursday, June 17, 2010 The Southern Illinoisan
purchase. This truck was the beginning of the tire wholesale route business, for which retreads were distributed outside the local area. In 1967 the business started purchasing and selling new tires. The first brands sold were Gates Rubber and B F Goodrich. The first Dayton Tires were purchased in 1967 with an opening credit line to the company of $10,000.00 with a personal guarantee. At that time this amount could almost buy a trailer-
load of tires. The business continued to grow and soon the company had three route trucks on the road, a car wash operation in full swing and the retreading shop working at night. It became necessary to purchase a tire changer to do local business and it was mounted on the sidewalk outside of the car wash. All tire changing jobs were done on the street using a jack. Due to local regulations the system for tire changing jobs on the street had to be
halted. At this time a choice had to be made whether to remain in the car wash business or to go strictly with the tires. On Labor Day 1968, all the car wash equipment was removed from the building and the first Plaza Tire Service Center was opened. A Hunter Alignment Machine was added but most of the business was tire sales. In 1972, a wholesale/retail location was started on South Kingshighway in St. Louis. Operations, mainly
wholesale, were opened at Columbia, Mo., Springfield, Ill. and Springfield, Mo., in the early to mid 70’s. When fuel prices escalated in 1980, the company realized the need for retail service centers. Since that time, Plaza Tire Service, Inc. has expanded with an aggressive pace to forty full service locations that operate in 4 states as well as maintaining a very successful wholesale operation. The Company remains family owned and operated.

J Bacher Fine Jewelry As southern Illinois’ first Certified Jeweler, Joe Bacher shares the knowledge and expertise gained from 34 years of working with clients. The goal, Bacher says, is to educate the public. “That way, you can make an informed decision on what you would like to purchase, rather than being sold a product which may not fit your desires or needs.” As a fine jeweler, the store offers original productions and repairs on-site.
J. Bacher Fine Jewelry has a history of bringing some of the finest products available to the region. “We work closely with small manufacturers to enable unique styling and fine detail with lower overhead,” Bacher says. He adds that the store’s newest addition will be available this summer – Sirius Star diamonds from Canada. “Get ready to be blown away,” Bacher adds.

Hughes Dental Arts Centre Dr. Christopher Hughes in not your average dentist. His concern is not just about how his patients teeth work, but also about how they look. It’s a concept around which he’s built his entire Herrin practice around. Even the name Hughes Dental Arts Centre reflects it. “I think the name emphasizes the artistic aspects of dentistry,” Dr. Hughes said. “As much as dentistry requires medical science and training, it also requires skills in artistry and aesthetics.” That means that patients not only turn to Dr. Hughes and his staff for routine dental care such as cleanings, filings, extractions and root canals, but also for improving their smiles. “We do cosmetic dentistry. We call it smile makeovers,” he said. Services include teeth whitening, straightening, fixing chips and cracks or other damaged areas of teeth. Hughes grew up in Herrin and is a graduate of the SIU School of Dental Medicine in Alton. He also has completed advanced training in aesthetic and reconstructive dentistry and implant dentistry.
“We’re the only office in southern Illinois that does complete implant care,” he said. “We do the implant surgery as well as make the crown or denture that fits the implant(s). That makes us unique. In most other settings, you go to one dentist for the surgery and then another for the restoration. We do the entire procedure here without an outside referral.” For those patients who are a bit nervous about their trip to the dentist, Hughes also offers intravenous sedation. “We administer a sedative through an IV,” he explained. “It is ideal for patients that want to get dental care done but are fearful. It makes them feel sleepy, relaxed and less anxious.” Regardless if the care is a routine examination and cleaning or more advanced services, the staff of Hughes Dental Arts Centre focus on helping people look and feel their best. “We want people to feel good about their smiles, because that impacts how they feel about themselves and ultimately has an influence on their lifestyle and their confidence.”

A1 Building and Overhead Doors A 1 Buildings have been in business for over 20 years, and build approximately 100 buildings a year. That is a lot of crews and coordination, but it is a labor of love, say the owners David and Leslie Andrews. Each building requires a rolled metal panel to complete construction, and it was hard to find a reliable source for metal that was near by. That was not a hurdle for this innovative couple. The simple solution was to
manufacture the panels themselves, so in February of 2009, Heartland Metal Sales was started and the company grew even more. “With thirty years in the post-frame building industry, it was a natural decision for us to offer these metal services as well,” Leslie Andrews said. “We know what kind of quality is needed to build a good building and how to make it look good and how to get the job done quickly and on time.” Heartland Metal Sales produces a variety of metal
panels for buildings, roofs, commercial buildings, farm structures and carports. The company can provide metal for commercial, residential and agricultural application and complete accessory trim components. “We also offer EnergyStar qualified metal sheeting for building. This provides a tax incentive as well as energy savings that can help reduce costs.” she said. Andrews said that the company offers nearly 20
colors of metal, all produced to specifications given by the customer. Any length is available and with the wide variety of colors, we can work with our customers to make the buildings fit in with their existing homes. “Our customers have been pleased that we take the time to work with them and find out what their needs are. Our building knowledge, coupled with the fact we can manufacture on site, gives us the perfect product for them. Quality, looks and
an affordable price. It seems to be working. We’ve been at it now for over 20 years and we have a great crew.” She said. Even as a new company, Heartland Metals holds true to the same philosophy that customers of A-1 Buildings have come to appreciate – high quality products and an excellent reputation. “People deal with us because of our honesty,” David Andrews said. “We work hard to make sure our customers get the kind of job delivered we would
want.” Heartland Metals and A1 Buildings serve about a 150 mile radius and include portions of Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Kentucky. They can be reached at their factory in Pittsburg, Illinois at 618983-5909 or 618-9838600. www.heartlandmetalsales. com website or email us at heartlandmetalsales@myc hoice.net.

Mississippi Flyway is a restaurant and bar serving food from Southern Illinois in a Southern Illinois atmosphere. Frank Hiller, Sr., founder and owner of the restaurant, said when he opened the restaurant in 1982 there weren’t any restaurants in the area that were really Southern Illinois themed. Other restaurants were similar, but he felt they were more northern in the way they looked and the way the food was cooked. “We choose ‘Flyway’ because of
the waterfowl that come through here, so that’s how we came up with the name,” he said. Mississippi Flyway’s menu consists of sandwiches, steak, fish, pizza and barbecue, as well as breakfast served on weekend mornings. In addition to dining, customers can catch their favorite sports team on one of five televisions or relax with friends in the attached game and billiards area. Banquet facilities are also available for groups and special events.
House 2 Home Realty When Celia Robertson started House 2 Home Realty three years ago, she never dreamed the agency would be so successful as quickly as it has been. Turns out, many home buyer and sellers are looking for a break from high commissions. In fact, House 2 Home Realty has saved both sellers and buyers more than $325,000 in just a few short months. “When I began my career in real estate at another agency, it didn’t take me long to figure out that I needed to offer clients other options, especially when it came to commissions,” Robertson says. “I am willing to take a cut on the listing side of the transaction, which allows the seller to come down on their asking price. In turn, that makes their home much more marketable, especially in a very competitive market.” Her realization has worked both for her own agency as well as dozens of satisfied customers. Headquartered in Energy, House 2 Home works with a team of agents, all with the same approach as Robertson.
Sellers only pay a one-time listing fee and have all of the advantages of selling their own home, yet receive all of the same benefits as if they were working with a commission-based agent. The net result could be a savings of thousands of dollars. Plus, House 2 Home makes sure listing receive exposure through traditional means such as advertising and home guides and inclusion on the Multiple Listings Service database as well as a listing on the siforsalebyowner.com website. Together, House 2 Home makes it possible for future home buyers and buyer’s agents to find your listing and deal with you directly, like in a for sale by owner scenario, except you receive expert guidance and advice from the professionals at House 2 Home Realty. It makes for happy buyers and sellers who save on commissions, and started with Robertson’s insight. “I’m am in this to help people and I will bend over backwards to do it,” she says. “That’s just how I am.”

Total Health Chiropractic
For some, total health might mean an absence of illness, but for the professionals at Total Health Chiropractic and Acupuncture Clinic in Herrin, the phrase means much more. When Dr. Kelly Chullen-Hoppers and her staff work to bring “total health” to patients and clients, it means allowing those individuals to live the life they desire. “We really try to look at the patient as a whole to achieve both our medical goals and to allow them to achieve what they want to do,” Dr. Chullen-Hoppers said. “Whether it’s wanting to be able to play with the grandchildren or just being able to walk around the mall. When they say they want to achieve something, that’s absolutely what we try to help them do.” With that philosophy, the staff at Total Health Chiropractic and Acupuncture takes a “big picture” approach to providing care through a variety of treatment strategies and techniques. “What makes us unique is our approach with lots of different options,”
she said. “It’s not cookie-cutter treatment. We work with the patient to find the best option in each case.” Services include chiropractic adjustments and manipulation, therapeutic exercise, massage therapy and acupuncture, a treatment option not often found in chiropractic offices. “Acupuncture might be a good approach for pain management, although it can be used for hundreds of conditions,” Chullen-Hoppers explained. She added that while people often related chiropractic care to conditions of the back and spine, treatments are not limited to that area. Patients come to the clinic for treatments for neck pain, problems with hips, knees, legs or even wrists. Treatments also include education and discussions of natural solutions to common health problems, all of which can lead to an improved quality of life, improving the way patients feel and giving Dr. Chullen-Hoppers a sense of satisfaction.
Southern Gas Company Service and Performance with Lasting Values
Locally owned and operated, Southern Gas Company has been providing safe dependable liquid propane gas service with competitive prices in southern Illinois since 1953. For three generations, the Carbondale-based company has built their propane business on lasting values, superior service and dependable supply. Some companies offer bargain prices but fail to deliver propane when you need it most. Southern Gas Company has a dependable supply of quality, HD5, high grade propane and dedicated employees, which means that when you need gas, they will deliver. Customers can also get price protection for the winter. Southern Gas offers a budget payment plan which eases the strain of high seasonal bills by spreading costs over the entire year with easy monthly payments. Budget pay customers save money by locking in a price per gallon for the heating season which takes the worry out of winter. There are two choices for delivery systems. “Keep Full,” where the staff at Southern Gas makes certain you always
have propane when you need it, or if you want to control when deliveries take place, use the company’s “Will Call” option. With their Degree Day Computer System, Southern Gas continues to provide efficient deliveries and superior service through the use of a technology that projects how much propane is being used by each customer. “Our system does it very well and it is quite accurate and reliable,” Carol Eaton Brandenburg, Southern Gas president says. A variety of tank sizes allows them to fit the specific needs of each customer, including 120 gallon tanks which are perfect for gas logs. Each tank is painted and maintained on a regular schedule for safety as well as appearance. Southern Gas can meet all of your propane needs. The company carries a variety of propane appliances for indoor and outdoor use, including grills, burners, ventless heaters and ventless fireplaces. Of course, they also fill and service tanks for grills, campers and RVs.
