Southern Illinois hurler Ryan Bird got a pitcher’s dream in the 2010 offseason. The 2008 Frontier League Pitcher of the Year got a more experienced catcher and a more explosive lineup for his third season in Marion. Ernie Banks, last year’s league slugging leader, and Stephen Head, a former AAA outfielder from the Philadelphia Phillies organization, were among Miners manager Mike Pinto’s acquisitions after Southern Illinois finished 56-40. Banks finished fifth in the league with 24 home runs and batted .343 in 54 games with the Washington (Pa.) Wild Things last season. Head played in 74 games last year for the Columbus Clippers, Cleveland’s AAA affiliate, and hit .246 with 16 doubles and six home runs before getting released. Southern Illinois’ lineup was pretty good without them. Veterans Brad Miller and Jereme Milons hit .296 and .285 last year, respectively, and could give the

DETAILS The Southern Illinois Miners acquired or returned five All-Stars from last year. Here is a quick look at those returning all-stars on the Miners’ roster as of Sunday: Ryan Bird, RHP: The 2008 Frontier League Pitcher of the Year will start the season on the injured list. Javier Brown, 2B: Played last year with Evansville and Rockford. Joey Metropoulos, OF: 2009 Frontier League Most Valuable Player tied for league lead in home runs (31). Brad Miller, 1B/DH: Hit .296 with 19 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs and 74 RBIs. Tony Roth, SS: Will start season on injured list with shoulder problems. Miners’ arms more confidence than ever. “It kind of gives you, as a pitcher, that confidence that if you can pitch six or seven innings and not give up much more than two or three runs, you have a great chance to get a win,” said Bird, who had the sixthbest ERA in the league last year at 3.48. “It gives you the confidence to go after guys, and not just try to pick spots.” Bird, last year’s ace, will start the season on the injured list with stiffness in his throwing shoulder. Pinto said it might take until the end of May to get

to expansion team Lake Erie (Ohio). This year, the Miners appear to have all the pieces of a championship contender, not just a playoff contender. Starters Joey Augustine, Eric Fussell and Brett Scarpetta won a combined 14 games last year. Bird went 9-7. Relievers Jake McMurran and Mike Damchuk were more than effective. Catcher Brendan Akashian is back behind the plate two years after hitting .302 and leading Southern Illinois to a 45-22 record with him in the starting lineup. The Miners were 13-16 without him, but still made the playoffs. “That’s a big piece for us,” Pinto said. “You look back at our record with Akashian in, and it’s not even close. He’s a clubhouse leader.” Akashian said he just hopes not to mess up the chemistry of the group when the season kicks off Thursday night at home against River City. “I think this team is built to win,” he said, “and I just hope to help out.”

everything worked out, but expected the 5-foot-10 righty to be a big player in the Miners’ push back to the playoffs. Bird won a league-record 17 straight decisions between 200809 and is 22-10 as a Miner. Southern Illinois came a tiebreaker away from earning its second straight postseason appearance in 2009. The Miners won 11 of 13 games between Aug. 18 and 30, but were only able to split their last six home games with West Division contenders Windy City and River City. River City reached the league finals, todd.hefferman@thesouthern.com where it lost in five games 618-351-5087

Miners look set for big year S ometimes the things a person doesn’t say are the most OFF telling. TARGET A week LES before the WINKELER Southern Illinois Miners were scheduled to open the regular season, manager Mike Pinto announced staff ace Ryan Bird would be placed on the disabled list. Pinto said Bird could be sidelined about a month to relieve a “tweak” in his shoulder. Bird is the best starting pitcher in Miners’ history. Yet, Pinto made the announcement without a hint of panic in his voice. First, Bird’s medical issue appears to be minor. Second, this is undoubtedly the best pitching staff Pinto has ever assembled. Of course, one can never have too much pitching. But, in this, the fourth season in Miners’ history, the team appears to have enough quality depth to weather the rigors of a 96-game season, injuries and possible signings with affiliated teams. Joey Augustine will take Bird’s spot at the top of the rotation. Ryan Kussmaul, who was arguably the Miners’ best starter down the stretch last year, probably won’t be used in the rotation for the first couple weeks of the season. And, the bullpen figures to be just as strong. Jake McMurran and Mike Damchuk, both of whom have been used as closers, probably won’t be used in those roles this year. At this point, right-hander Brent DeFoor, who spent 2009 in the Chicago White Sox organization, will be the Miners’ Opening Day closer.

THE SOUTHERN FILE PHOTO

Ryan Bird pitches last year against the Traverse City Beach Bums. Bird will start the 2010 season on the injured list.

That pitching staff will be the foundation for what could be, and possibly should be, the best team the Miners have ever put on the field. Pinto will put a formidable lineup on the field, including Joey Metropolous, last season’s Frontier League Most Valuable Player, Brad Miller and Jereme Milons. Just as importantly, the Miners will have Brendan Akashian back behind the plate. Akashian hit better than .300 for the Miners two years ago before signing with the Philadelphia Phillies organization. However, Akashian’s bat is not his biggest attribute. Akashian is an on-field leader. There were times last year when the Miners seemed starved for an onfield leader. In addition, Pinto is thrilled with the way Akashian handles the pitching staff. As always, Pinto promises the Miners will be a strong defensive team.

With Akashian behind the plate, Milons in center and a double-play combination of Javier Brown and Brad Netzel, Southern Illinois is strong where it needs to be. This lineup will produce runs. The projected lineup has Akashian, a former .300 hitter, batting eighth. The Miners have power. Even the spacious dimensions of Rent One Park will hold this lineup. The Miners have speed. The huge alleys in leftcenter and right-center should lead to lots of doubles. This team should also be able to steal bases. And, with Milons patrolling center field, Miners pitchers can pitch to contact with impunity. Everyone is optimistic in the preseason. But, this team has the potential to be the best in the brief history of the Miners. LES WINKELER is the sports

MINERS POSITION PREVIEWS: IN THE FIELD

Infield defense strong up the middle BY TODD HEFFERMAN THE SOUTHERN

Good baseball teams are always strong up the middle, and the heart of the Southern Illinois Miners’ defense could be the best in the Frontier League. Second baseman Javier Brown, an all-star at Evansville last year who could hit lead-off for the Miners this season, has injected a bit of athleticism into the fourth-year squad. In the team’s first preseason game against River City, the 6-foot, 180-pound righty made a diving stop to his right, and then started a 4-6-3 double play with a bare-handed toss to shortstop Brad Netzel. Netzel, a short- or longterm fill-in for the injured Tony Roth, hit .286 in 14 games with the Miners last year, and gives the Miners a pretty good blueprint for double plays. Southern Illinois turned 71 double

guys have seen some of the plays Brown has made. Some spectacular plays. And they’re making all the routine plays. And then I put (Jereme) Milons in center field? That’s a seasoned pro, so, it’s a pretty solid middle.” All-star Brad Miller appears to have the inside track to start at first base after hitting .296 last year, but could be pushed by 2009 slugging leader Ernie Banks. Third base could be a rotation, rather than a race in the preseason. “I really have five guys vying for that role, and it will come down to, really, who gets hot and shows consistency with their atbats, consistency in the field,” Pinto said. “I think, STEVE JAHNKE / THE SOUTHERN with the lineup that we have this year, defense is Southern Illinois infielder Brad Netzel throws to first base on an attempted double play in an exhibition game against the premier there, because I Gateway Grizzlies on May 12 at Rent One Park in Marion. have a bunch of guys that can swing the bats.” plays last year, the sixth and Brown have played in the middle,” Miners man- todd.hefferman@thesouthern.com lowest in the league. “I love the way Netzel ager Mike Pinto said. “You 618-351-5087

Right field appears to be the only open spot in the Southern Illinois outfield. Defending Frontier League Most Valuable Player Joey Metropoulos will either start at designated hitter or in left when the Miners open the season against River City. The cover boy of Southern Illinois’ media guide made the league’s all-star team for the second straight year in 2009. The 6-foot-2, 285-pound right-hander tied for the league lead with 31 home runs and made the top 10 in average (.317), RBIs (82) and slugging percentage (.651). Metropoulos already owns Miners records for career homers (60), RBIs (180), hits (263), doubles (54) and walks (101). Starkville, Miss., native Jereme Milons returns in center field after hitting .285 with 15 home runs and 72 RBIs. In his first season in Marion, Milons set a franchise record with 38 stolen bases in 44 attempts. “I’ve got a lot of guys that

I can put out there,” Miners manager Mike Pinto said. “There have been a couple guys who have jumped out at us, but we’ve got some depth there, and … we can steal a base, and we can hit the ball out of the ballpark.” Anna resident Stephen Head could bolster one of the Miners’ most experienced units. The lefty spent

last year with the Cleveland Indians’ AAA franchise in Columbus, Ohio, and is a .263 pro hitter in five years. Head, one of five veterans on the roster as of Sunday, could give the Miners even more diversity in the outfield. “We’ve really got a nice balance of guys who will take a pitch, good on-base

percentage guys, and that’s big,” Pinto said. “That adds up. You get to a starter, maybe get to the bullpen a little bit earlier, you get to guys that are not, maybe, as strong as earlier in the game, and that’s how you blow games open.” todd.hefferman@thesouthern.com 618-351-5087

MARION — To say Southern Illinois manager Mike Pinto is comfortable with Brendan Akashian behind the plate is an understatement. Akashian was the Miners regular catcher in 2008. The left-handed hitting New Englander played in the Philadelphia Phillies organization last season. “First of all, he brings a real tenacity to how he plays the game,” Pinto said.

“He’s an old-school, hardnosed ballplayer. He calls a real good game. Pitchers have confidence throwing to him.” Defensively, Pinto said Akashian is as good as anyone in the Frontier League. He had just six errors in 69 games with the Miners in 2008. “(Getting him back,) that’s a difference maker for us,” Pinto said. “Look at our winning percentage with Brendan Akashian behind the plate. The numbers are staggering.” Akashian was also a

strong offensive performer for the Miners, hitting hitting .302 with 32 RBIs and drawing 46 walks in 266 at bats. His .442 on-base percentage was 11th in the league. Then, there are the intangibles. “As a manager, you want a guy on the field that knows what’s going on,” Pinto said. “I have a lot of confidence that when I go to the mound and ask his opinion, he’s going to tell me.”

Cody Neer, who played at the University of Nebraska, will be Akashian’s backup. Neer hit .292 his senior season at Nebraska. He can swing the bat.”

MINERS POSITION PREVIEWS: ON THE MOUND

Bullpen should give team plenty of relief BY LES WINKELER THE SOUTHERN

MARION — When it comes to the bullpen, the Southern Illinois Miners should be well-armed (pun fully intended) this season. The bullpen has proven performers in Jake McMurran, Mike Damchuk, Ryan Kussmaul and Brent DeFoor. McMurran, Damchuk and Kussmaul are holdovers from last year. DeFoor joins the Miners after two years in the Chicago White Sox organization. DeFoor made two appearances in AAA last year. Overall, DeFoor was 3-2 with a 2.67 ERA in the White Sox organization. He compiled seven saves. “He is a strike machine,” said Miners manager Mike Pinto. DeFoor is expected to handle the closer’s role, at least early in the season. That opens up innings in mid- to late-game situations for McMurran. The rubber-armed McMurran appeared in 41 games last year, compiling a 1.76 ERA. “That’s pretty darned strong,” Pinto said. “Both of those guys have been workhorses for us. McMurran gave up three earned runs after July 1 for us last year.”

CLICK & CONNECT: For more coverage of the Miners, visit our website at www.thesouthern.com. Another newcomer in the bullpen is former Saluki Shawn Joy. Joy pitched for Traverse City in the Frontier League last year, and gave up just three runs in the final two months of the season. Joy will be the lone lefthander in the bullpen. Pinto is not concerned with that disparity. “The most important thing to me is to have good arms, guys that can get outs,” he said. “I work matchups heavily. It’s not always lefty vs. lefty. I know what the matchups are. We try to put them in a spot where they can have the most success.” The Miners manager also likes the familiarity he has with McMurran, Damchuk and Kussmaul. “I know them,” he said. “I know what I’m getting from them. “I’ve got some guys I can hand the ball to in the latter part of the ballgame and they can get some things done.” les.winkeler@thesouthern.com 618-351-5088

Bird or no Bird, rotation appears deep BY LES WINKELER THE SOUTHERN

MARION — First, the bad news. Ryan Bird, the Frontier League pitcher of the year in 2008, will open the season on the disabled list. Now, the good news. The Southern Illinois Miners’ starting pitching is so deep that even with Bird sidelined for a couple weeks, it’s likely that Ryan Kussmaul, who was arguably the Southern Illinois Miners’ best starting pitcher down the stretch last year, won’t be in the starting rotation for the first couple weeks of the season. The Miners have off days built into the first couple weeks of the season, meaning manager Mike Pinto will probably go with a fourman rotation. The Miners will start the season with a rotation of Joe

Augustine, Brett Scarpetta, Eric Fussell and Dustin Brader. “Joey Augustine did a great job for us last year (7-5, 3.50 ERA),” Pinto said. “ He was in the top-12 ERA. He’ll be our opening day starter. “All four guys give me a chance to win when I write their name on the lineup card. They’re all consistent. They’re all strike-throwers.” When games start piling up, Kussmaul is likely to be the fifth starter. “He has exceptional stuff,” Pinto said. “He gets the ball up there at about 94 miles per hour with late life on the ball. “Last year, he was 4-1 in the last month of the season. If that’s my fifth guy, that’s not horrible.” Scarpetta returns to the rotation after compiling a 7-4 mark last year.

hander last pitched for Windy City in 2007 before suffering a hip injury. He was 12-2 with a 3.26 ERA in 2007. Brader comes to the Miners from the Texas Rangers’ organization. All the starters fit into the Miners’ philosophy of pitching to contact. “Generally, we put an exceptionally strong defense on the field,” Pinto said. “With a great defense and a big ballpark, why wouldn’t you go with that philosophy?” And, the Miners could be bolstered by Bird’s return three or four weeks into the season. Bird has a “tweak” in his shoulder. “He’s not in pain,” Pinto said. “There is some stiffness in the shoulder he can’t seem to get rid of.”

“He’s extremely competitive on the mound,” Pinto said. “I really like guys who want to compete. A guy gets on base and they turn it up.” Brader and Fussell are the two newcomers in the mix. Pinto is particularly excited about the addition of les.winkeler@thesouthern.com Fussell. The lanky right- 618-351-5088

Two new franchises hope to orchestrate what Lake Erie was able to pull off in 2009. The first-year Crushers finished the regular season 57-38, a half-game back of Kalamazoo in the East Division, and then won two elimination games on the road to win the Frontier League title. The Normal CornBelters, an expansion team that will play in a 7,000-seat stadium named the Corn Crib, and the Oakland County Cruisers hope for similar beginner’s luck in the league’s 18th season. The CornBelters, managed by former major league player/manager Hal Lanier, open the season Friday at Evansville. The Cruisers, a renovation of the Midwest Sliders of the 2009 season, expect to open a new stadium after this year and will spend most of this season on the road. The Cruisers will host at least 18 games in the Detroit area, and as of this past weekend, were still hoping to land a site for a three-game set between Aug. 10 and 12. They are expected to open the 4,200-seat Diamond at the Summit in Waterford Township, Mich., after the All-Star break in mid-July. Lake Erie lost its three primary starting pitchers, including league pitcher of the year Paul Fagan, but returns its entire infield and catcher from 2009. Fagan, who led the league with 14 regular-season victories, is now playing for the Newark (N.J.) Bears of the Atlantic League. Frontier League Championship Series Most Valuable Player Andrew Davis is back at third base. Second baseman Andrew Saylor, who hit .302 with a team-high 26 doubles and 62 RBIs, also returns. Rockford left the Frontier League, which led to a new divisional lineup. The Southern Illinois Miners will join former West Division foes Evansville, Gateway and River City in the new South Division with Florence and Normal. Kalamazoo. Lake Erie, Oakland County, Traverse City, Washington and Windy City are now in the North Division. Here’s a quick preview of this year’s teams:
