Overview

9th ANNUAL

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS MUSIC FESTIVAL

Edward Benyas, Artistic Director And Conductor

3

The 9th annual Southern Illinois Music Festival features more than three dozen performances in venues from Sesser to Cairo, Murphysboro to Marion and at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, our major sponsor. In addition to members of the New Chicago Chamber Orchestra, musicians from throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia perform orchestral music, chamber music, opera, ballet and jazz, all in an informal and inviting atmosphere. Casual dress is welcome!

This year’s Festival, titled Swarm of B’s, runs June 3-23 and features some of our favorite composers that start with the letter “B” — Bach, Brahms, Barber, Bartok and Beethoven, to name a few. Highlights include Bizet’s tragic opera, Carmen (June 21 and 23) Tchaikovsky’s fairy-tale ballet, Swan Lake (June 7 and 8), with performances by some of the nation’s top ballet dancers, and two outstanding orchestral programs: Symphonic Swarm of B’s (June 13 and 14) features some of our favorite “B” composers, led by our very own “B”

conductor, Maestro Edward Benyas. Our own “B” Concertmaster, Michael Barta, gives us all the buzz on Bartók’s 1st Violin Concerto, and the concert opens with Bach’s 3rd Orchestral Suite. Stars of Today and Tomorrow (June 22) features our long-time Principal Oboist James Ryon, Cellist Bill Cernota of the Lyric Opera Chicago

Orchestra, and the winner of the 2013 Young Artist Competition. The Festival also includes chamber music by Beethoven (including works for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 musicians), a Sunday night Jazz series at area wineries, and Klassics for Kids and Jive with Jazz events at venues throughout the region.

OPERA Carmen by Bizet

Friday, June 21, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 23, 2:00 p.m. Carterville High School Performing Arts Center $25 Premium, $18 General; $8 Students any age Georges Bizet’s immensely popular opera, Carmen, tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naïve soldier who is seduced by the wiles of the fiery gypsy Carmen. The music of Carmen has been acclaimed for its brilliance of melody, harmony, atmosphere and orchestration. Bizet is also skilled in the way he represents musically the emotions and suffering of his characters. Directed by Josh Shaw, the cast features the glorious mezzo soprano voice of Dawn Pierce as Carmen, the exciting tenor Brian Cheney as Don José, Southern Illinois’ own David Dillard and Eric McCluskey as Escamillo and Morales, and a fabulous supporting cast and chorus.
