Q: Amanda Seyfried plays Linda Lovelace in an upcoming film. Did she get feedback from Lovelace’s grown children? —Emily E., Buffalo A: “They were really grateful,” says Seyfried, 27, who portrays the late adult-film star turned feminist activist in Lovelace, in theaters Aug. 9. “They want to show the movie to their spouses so they can understand what their mother went through,” adds the actress, who says the role was the most difficult of her career. “It’s the biggest compliment I could’ve received.”

On my best day, I don’t think I’ll ever be as perfectly moral and ethical as he is. The only dirt under his fingernails is that sometimes he works too hard and cares too much. You graduated from Princeton; did that help your career? When you’re in an audition, it’s about being right for the role, not about where you went to college. I did hear after the fact that my parents had a healthy amount of anxiety about my [being in a business] where the degree doesn’t matter. Did you ever consider becoming a doctor? I did, but I got a D in biology. I wasn’t a natural! You’ve directed a few episodes of Royal Pains. How did that go? The first time, it was like my Citizen Kane. [laughs] I’ve been learning how to simplify. What’s it like working with Henry Winkler, who plays your father? It’s still surreal to me that the Fonz, who I worshipped as a child, is my friend. He’s a shining example of how to live in this business. I thought nice guys finished last until I met him.

It’s been amazing to learn something new,” says Hatcher, 48, who will receive her diploma at the end of the year. Oprah Winfrey, Lee Daniels, and Forest Whitaker discuss their new film and the questions it raises about race in America

THE WALDORF ASTORIA hotel on Manhattan’s East Side—where every U.S. president since Herbert Hoover has stayed—has witnessed its share of history, which makes it the perfect setting on this warm July day for a conversation between Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, and director Lee Daniels about their new movie, in theaters Aug. 16. The powerful chronicle of one black man’s years of service in the White House during the most tumultuous period in the nation’s civil rights history, the film (originally called The Butler, at press time it did not have a final title) was a labor of love for the trio. Whitaker, 52, plays Cecil Gaines, whose experiences attending presidents from Eisenhower through Reagan are loosely based on those of Eugene Allen, a long-serving 6 | AUGUST 4, 2013

calling each other the N-word. They’d say, “Negro, please.” You’ve come out against its use in rap lyrics, Oprah. WINFREY: Yes. With people like Jay Z—and I’ve had him on the show—we agree to disagree about it. You’re never going to bring me to the side of “The word is okay.” Do you think that young people today know enough about the civil rights movement? WINFREY: They don’t know diddlysquat. Diddly-squat! DANIELS: Let me tell you something. I showed the film to my relatives in Philadelphia over the Fourth of July, because I figured they’re the harshest of audiences. And my 30-year-old nephew said to me, “Did some of this stuff really happen?” And I was very upset by that. WINFREY: I come from the generation … We were doing a scene [set in 1964] where we’re playing cards and dancing, and they had pictures of Martin Luther King Jr., Robert F. Kennedy, and John F. Kennedy on the wall. And I went, “They’re not all dead yet.” You see, that trio of pictures only went up in the ’70s. Every black house had them; they were up in our home. So you were sort of a historical adviser on the film? WINFREY: Yes, I was old enough to be the historical adviser for the ’60s, thank you very much! Then Lee would go, “Set design? Oprah says these shouldn’t be here. Have somebody check it.” [laughter] Forest, what are your memories of the era? WHITAKER: I was a kid, but I was a part of busing. I went across town to another black neighborhood [in Los Angeles] to be bused into [Pacific] Palisades, because where I was didn’t have any busing and the schools weren’t very good. The

PARADE: Why did you want to make this movie? LEE DANIELS: I thought it was time. This story hadn’t been chronicled. FOREST WHITAKER: It says so much about our history and the emotional impact in a family—a black family, which we don’t see often. And this project brought you back to acting, Oprah. OPRAH WINFREY: Lee was relentless. I remember being on my mountain in Maui, where I go to try to restore myself. And he called saying, “You need to get ready, because you are Gloria.” So I did it to have the opportunity to work with Lee. I also did it because Gloria represented to me every woman of that

era who sacrificed herself. Gloria is my aunt, my mother, my grandmother, never bringing her own dreams to fruition because family took precedence over everything. It’s a story many have not seen with black people in these roles, because usually we’re one extreme or another. But to see that we are people who love our children, who have the same aspirations as everybody else—I just love that. There’s a great scene in which Clarence Williams III, who plays one of young Cecil’s bosses, tells him never to use the N-word, because it’s filled with hate. This summer, when Paula Deen has admitted to having used it and we’ve heard it from Big Brother cast members and from Jay Z on his new album, that conversation really resonates. DANIELS: It’s a word I used quite a bit, until Oprah sat me down and talked to me about its power. WINFREY: You cannot be my friend and use that word around me. It shows my age, but I feel strongly about it. I was too young to participate in civil rights marches, but I am a student of black history. I grew up reciting Sojourner Truth’s “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech and Fannie Lou Hamer’s speeches. I grew up understanding where I’ve come from. When you fully get that, it’s hard to be looselipped with that word. I always think of the millions of people who heard that as their last word as they were hanging from a tree. WHITAKER: I don’t use the word. Never did. DANIELS: So I put that toward the beginning of the film, and that’s the only time you will hear it from any black person. WINFREY: Right. There’s a notable absence of the word. Because back in the ’60s, black people were not

White House butler who died in 2010. In her first dramatic role since 1998’s Beloved, Winfrey, 59, plays Gaines’s wife, Gloria, who battles a drinking problem and watches her husband clash with their activist son (David Oyelowo). “We took a lot of liberties with Gloria,” says Winfrey of their real-life inspirations. “Cecil’s character is more on point.” The film revisits major events—the Freedom Rides, the lunch counter sit-ins, the Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. assassinations—through their impact on the Gaines family, and offers delicious peeks above and below stairs at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. (Robin Williams, John Cusack, and Liev Schreiber are among the stars making cameos as presidents; see the sidebar at right.) “It’s what our country went through so that Obama could be in office,” says Daniels, 53, a twotime Oscar nominee for Precious. He and his stars settle in for a very personal chat about racism, the civil rights movement, and boogying in ’70s jumpsuits.

Watts riots were nearby. The Symbionese Liberation Army was killed in the building behind my grandmother’s; I walked through that burnt, charred house. I remember when they blew up the Black Panther Party, because it was around the corner from my house. I used to walk by there every day, being asked by the Panthers to come to their breakfast program. I’d say, “My mom won’t let me.” DANIELS: [to Whitaker] The moment with you and David [Oyelowo] at the water fountain—I vividly remember going to the South to visit my grandmother, at 7 or 8, and having to drink from the “colored” fountain. That was etched in my head when we shot that. WINFREY: That’s amazing, because I was raised in Mississippi, where those signs were prevalent, and I think I never had a drink of water downtown. You know? [laughter] But something Forest said struck me: “My mom won’t let me.” My father wouldn’t have let me, either. People have asked, and I’ve asked myself, would I have had the courage to be a Freedom Rider at 18, 19, to be threatened by the Ku Klux Klan and know at any moment I could die? Probably not. I feel blessed that they went before me. Also, I came from a family like the butler’s. My father is hardworking, a man of dignity, but you didn’t want to do anything to rock the boat or upset “them,” white folks, because they still had all the power. It took that generation a long time even to say the word black. You know, my mother was a maid. My grandmother was a maid. Her mother was a maid. To look down upon that part of my history would be ridiculous; I am the seed of that. So for me, this is

a story about family and connection, living through those times. I hope people come away from it with a sense of pride and gratitude for that generation, because none of us would be here without the butlers and maids. None of us. DANIELS: But there are those of us who also come from the Panthers, and those of us who were out in the streets fighting. Who was right? Was the butler right? Or was his son? WINFREY: Both. In what ways have you experienced racism? WHITAKER: I’ve had many incidents in my life of racism. I’ve been thrown on the ground. I’ve been frisked. I’ve been arrested so many times I couldn’t tell you. I have no need to talk about it. DANIELS: I love you for that. It’s like, you know what? It’s a given. I can’t even get a taxi in this city. I send my [white] assistant out to get a taxi because I can’t. WHITAKER: The movie deals with the valuation of life, too. Like, whose life is valuable? Is it okay to take life? In terms of today, [the film] Fruitvale Station [of which Whitaker is a producer] is playing, about the shooting of Oscar Grant in the Oakland BART station, which just happened in 2009. WINFREY: And the shooting of Trayvon Martin. WHITAKER: If you can’t accept that these things are going on, you’re living an illusion. So the question at this point is more of, how can we move the needle forward? Can we speak up? I think this film helps that in some way. WINFREY: Yeah. But do we live in a land where Martin Luther King’s dream has been ultimately fulcontinued on page 13 filled? No.

If there’s clearly time, try to find a sturdy building in which to take shelter. If not, get out of the vehicle. “The thing that hurts or kills most people is debris, so you want to be as low to the ground as possible,” Neese says. Overpasses offer no protection. Even if you lose consciousness, that signal is going to go through.” There’s no scientific evidence showing that coughing can be used as self-help CPR during a heart attack, and experts fear it could lead to delays in calling for help.

Ask Marilyn By Marilyn vos Savant

Do birds cough? I know birds can get pneumonia, but in my bird-watching and limited bird ownership, I’ve never seen or heard one cough. If they don’t, how do they remove secretions from their lungs and airways? —Holly Morgan, via email

Birds cough, all right. And sneeze, too! The reason you assume you’ve never witnessed this, if you’ve actually been near a sick bird, is that it wouldn’t draw your attention. A cough sounds like a slightly different chirp. A sneeze is so soft you can barely hear it, and the head movement is almost undetectable. A vet or trained caretaker would notice, but most observers would not. So if your own Tweety Pie starts to sound a bit different, it’s time for a visit to the vet. Don’t wait until he looks sick.

No trick, no wick, no flame. Just place a wax meltable in the Warmer. Odors vanish leaving a fresh, clean fragrance.
