ver the last two rather extraordinary years, at the risk of sounding vain, I have often been asked why I thought Downton Abbey has been quite such a success. Of course, it is hard to be definite about these things. If television were an exact science, there would be nothing made that did not break records. But supposing I were to put my finger on one element, it might be that we have made the decision to treat every character, the members of the family and the members of their staff, equally, in terms of their narrative strength. They all have emotional lives, dreams, ambitions, and disappointments, and with all of them we suggest backstories, many of which are to be found in my own history. Few people shake off the family influences they were born into, and I am not among them. My relations, when I was young, were numerous and omnipresent and, inevitably I suppose, they seem now to abandon their graves and settle into the pages of my scripts with increasing regularity. I have spoken before of my impressive, if tyrannical, great-aunt Isie, who is the principal model for Violet Grantham (and also for Lady Trentham in Gosford Park before that), a woman whose dry wit concealed a good deal of personal suffering and who was no tougher on the rest of us than she was on herself. It is perhaps that draconian sense of personal discipline that makes her breed seem admirable to me. But my family has contributed the outline sketches for more than the Dowager. Robert Grantham is definitely drawn, in his personality if not his circumstance, from my

In this, I mean to convey that he was a deeply moral man, cleverer possibly than Robert, and, like Robert, he was always determined to do right, but without ever contesting the structure of his own social universe. One of my brothers remarked that if Pa had crashed in the desert and somehow found a parking meter buried in the sand, he would be sure to put the correct money into it. A recent report for the Labour Government concluded that birth remained the greatest determinant when it came to our futures in modern Britain. This seems extraordinary to me, partly because I grew up in the 1960s, a generation that assumed all such stuff was coming to an end, and if you had asked anyone in 1968 how important class would be in 40 years’ time, they would have laughed in your face. But perhaps I have a greater sensibility because, to a degree, I was brought up in a class minefield. My father’s birth was grander than my mother’s, his relations therefore disapproving of both her family and her, and she was condemned to the unenviable task of making everything in their life seem smooth and seamless when it was in fact riven with stitching. She

The Oscar winner, 78, joins the cast to play wealthy Rhode Islander Martha Levinson.

What’s Mrs. Levinson like? She’s a force for change. She goes to see the other side of her family and talks about how they got into a world war because they were addicted to tradition. She tells them they really need to get up to speed on what’s happening in the world. Do you think there’s still a lot of class consciousness in England? My relationship with the English is they love my bawdiness, because I cuss in public. Maybe they like to get away from “appropriate” behavior. I do understand why they had the British class system. I don’t know which came ﬁrst, that or the clothes—because you couldn’t get dressed without a servant. All the buttons! You have a great scene where you sing “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” to Maggie Smith at a party. That was my idea, and Julian [Fellowes] went for it. I thought it might be funny and charming—how would this character who doesn’t even know what a weekend is react to someone singing a love song to her? Was it hard joining Downton’s ensemble? No, they welcomed me in! They wanted to hear stories about the Rat Pack and Billy Wilder and Hitchcock. And they asked, “Would you sing ‘If My Friends Could See Me Now’ from Sweet Charity?” The thing that impressed me about the cast—besides their being wonderful actors—was we’d be out in the rain and wind, and they’d do everything as though there was no weather. And I thought, I’d better do that, too. —Kathy Heintzelman

The 31-year-old native of Essex was nominated for an Emmy last year for her portrayal of Lady Mary Crawley, eldest daughter of Lord and Lady Grantham.

The actor, 30, hails from London and plays Matthew Crawley, heir to Downton Abbey. But will he exit in season four?

Mary has become the series’ heroine. What do you think of the fans’ reaction to her? I was told there is a Twitter account called Lady Mary’s Eyebrows, which is just bonkers! I tend to not take it all too seriously, but it’s incredibly ﬂattering. I’m just very proud to be a part of something that’s captured people’s hearts. Has it been hard to play the on-again, off-again relationship with Matthew? Julian writes the episodes as we go, so we can’t play what’s coming, which is great as an actor. In the second season I was thinking, “Maybe she’ll have to marry Richard and be miserable; maybe that would be interesting to play.” The course of true love never did run smooth, and there are still issues that [Matthew and Mary] have to resolve. How was it working with Shirley MacLaine? Oh! She was brilliant! It was suddenly very quiet when she left, and we all missed her. Being in the same scenes as Maggie Smith and Shirley MacLaine is something I will never forget. —Mary Margaret

What makes Matthew and Mary a good love match? Since the beginning, they’ve seemed like opposites; they’ve clashed and caused sparks. But opposites attract, and sparks make ﬁre. Can they have a happy ending? One of the constant dramatic pressures on the characters is that personal happiness is often sacriﬁced for the sake of the house. Everyone is striving to see the estate continue; they see its survival as the key to happiness. What’s it like knowing that royals like Prince William and Duchess Kate are tuning in? What’s wonderful is that the show seems to appeal to a huge range of people. You’re currently starring on Broadway as well, in The Heiress. What do you enjoy about doing period dramas? Aside from the fun costumes and beautiful settings, it’s a chance to explore where we’ve come from and how much or how little we’ve changed. Would you like to comment on reports that you’ll be leaving the series in the fourth season? I could tell you, but then I’d have to have Mrs. Patmore cook you. … —K. H.

was a strong woman and in her youth a great beauty, which is a powerful social tool even if it carries a sell-by date, but it was never plain sailing, all the same. The gap today would not feel wide, she from the respectable middle class, he from what one of my brothers refers to rather caustically as the “landless gentry,” but in 1935, the year of their marriage, it was a chasm. The cool dismissals, the veiled snubs, the cold-shouldering of a friendly gesture—I have witnessed them all, both through the puzzled eyes of childhood, and with the more knowledgeable vision of later on. I suppose standing, as it were, on both sides of the divide has inﬂuenced my work, but, as anyone logical could tell, the accusation of snobbery is wide of the mark. It is precisely because I identify with both teams that my writing, if I am allowed to say so, aspires to a kind of social justice which, I believe anyway, is one of the reasons it has reached so wide an audience. But if my past gives the characters an edge and makes the world of Downton Abbey more real, then I am more than content. Certainly, it is pretty real to me, and I hope to you as well. Nutty Broccoli Heat 2 Tbsp olive oil in a large wok. Add 1 tsp minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Add 1 head broccoli (cut into florets) and stir-fry until tender. Sprinkle with 1 Tbsp chopped walnuts.

As our judicial system is bound by laws and case law, wouldn’t it be better for a computer like Watson to decide cases? A computer has no bias. Consider our Supreme Court: Decisions are often 5–4 along party lines.

But who would program “Courtney”? Laws aren’t absolute like equations. They’re not comparable to chess moves that can be analyzed, or to facts, such as George Washington’s birth date. (Hmm. Was it Feb. 11, 1731, according to the Julian calendar used then? Or Feb. 22, 1732, by today’s Gregorian calendar?) Instead, they’re subject to interpretation, which is understandable: Laws are written by ordinary people, then modiﬁed (or mangled) by committees on their bumpy road to passage. As for case law, it’s teeming with human interpretations; it would just detract from our efforts to keep Courtney above the fray. Then there’s the Constitution, which embodies our fundamental laws and more. Over time, translating its precepts into current reality grows more and more difﬁcult, demonstrated by our frequently split Supreme Court decisions.
