What’s the weirdest pizza you ever featured? Philly Cheesesteak pizza is pretty unique. And that Fritos pizza was out there. Who ever thought about putting Fritos on a pizza? What’s your favorite pizza? Pepperoni, sausage and a blend of six cheeses.

Papa John’s founder and CEO on the happy marriage of pizza and football—and his idea of the perfect game day. As Papa John’s gears up for Super Bowl Sunday, Parade talked to company founder “Papa” John Schnatter, 53, whom you may recognize from TV commercials with famous franchisee, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. Schnatter opened the first Papa John’s 30 years ago in Jeffersonville, Ind. (They sold $5 pizzas out of a bar broom closet.) Today, his Louisville, Ky.-based company is the world’s thirdlargest pizza delivery chain, with more than 4,600 restaurants worldwide.
What are things like at Papa John’s on Super Bowl Sunday? We’re the official pizza sponsor of the NFL and Super Bowl XLIX, but pizza and football have always gone together. Super Bowl Sunday is by far our busiest day of the year. We sell 1 million pizzas nationwide just in that one day.

suppose you have a job offer with a choice of two annual salaries. one is $30,000 with a $1,000 raise every year. The other is $30,000 with a $300 raise every six months. Which option is best in the long run? —Steve Flowers, Vienna, W.Va. What do you think, readers? If you want to ponder this one on your own, stop reading here. The answer appears in the next paragraph. The second choice is better, right from the beginning. Say it’s Jan. 1, 2015, and you choose the $1,000 raise at the end of the year. In 2015, you earn $30,000. But if you choose the $300 raise, you earn $15,000 during the first six months and $15,300 during the second six months. In 2015, you earn $30,300. With the $1,000 raise in effect for 2016, you earn $31,000. But with the $300 raise, you earn $15,600 during the first six months and $15,900 during the second six months. In 2016, you earn $31,500. With the $1,000 raise in effect for 2017, you earn $32,000. But with the $300 raise, you earn $16,200 during the first six months and $16,500 during the second six months. In 2017, you earn $32,700. At the end of three years, you’d be a total of $1,500 ahead ($30,300 + $31,500 + $32,700 = $94,500, compared to $30,000 + $31,000 + $32,000 = 93,000). Over time, the $300 raise just keeps getting better and better. Send questions to marilyn@parade.com

Spend your Sunday afternoon brewing a rich, homemade stock made from a grab-and-go rotisserie chicken and a few key ingredients, and you’ll have the basis for three super soup suppers.
CHICKEN, SPINACH AND WHITE BEAN STEW To 4 cups hot Easy Chicken Stock, add 2 cups cooked chicken, 1 (15-oz) can drained white beans, and 4 cups baby spinach leaves. Cook until spinach is wilted, about 2 minutes. Ladle into bowls and top with a dollop of pesto. Serves 4.
CHICKEN AND DUMPLINGS To 6 cups hot Easy Chicken Stock, add 3 cups cooked chicken and 3 chopped carrots. In a separate bowl, combine 1½ cups Bisquick, ½ cup milk and 2 Tbsp Parmesan cheese. Drop dough by rounded teaspoons into stock mixture. Cook, uncovered, 10 minutes. Cover and cook 10 more minutes. Serves 6.
TORTILLA SOUP To 4 cups hot Easy Chicken Stock, add 1 cup water, 2 Tbsp chili powder, 1 (14-oz) can diced tomatoes with green chiles and 2 cups cooked chicken. Heat until thoroughly warmed. Easy Chicken Stock: Start with the carcass of a rotisserie chicken (or a small fryer). Put in a large saucepan or stockpot and add 1 rib chopped celery, 2 chopped carrots, 1 chopped onion and 2 chopped leeks. (You can also add peeled garlic cloves and fresh parsley sprigs.) Cover with 12 cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, and simmer 2 to 6 hours. Strain through a sieve. Makes 4 to 8 cups stock.
TONY TOMSIC
Tomsic, 79, got his start as a photographer at the Cleveland Press, a daily newspaper that ceased publishing in 1982. “I never took a photography class,” he says. “I learned by trial and error.” A half-century later, Tomsic is the dean of Super Bowl shooters, having worked the sidelines for Sports Illustrated, ESPN and the NFL. The old-school photographer who doesn’t own a digital camera—or computer—thought about ending his Super Bowl streak a few years ago but the backlash from friends and colleagues was swift and severe. “I got called a lot of names,” he says. So this year—and next—look for Tomsic, most likely moving to wherever the line of scrimmage happens to be. “I like to be in the trench,” he says. “I don’t stand in one spot.”

SUPER BOWL XLV
FOUR PHOTOGRAPHERS WHO’VE CAPTURED EVERY SUPER BOWL—48 AND COUNTING—ZOOM IN ON THE BIG GAME.
M
BY GARY D’AMATO COVER PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICKEY PALMER/GETTY IMAGES
ost football fans can only dream of attending a Super Bowl game, the cost and logistics of tickets and travel way beyond their means. Even the vast majority of NFL players never make it to the Big Game. But four men have witnessed not only one Super Bowl in person—they’ve been there, in the flesh, at them all. Their ticket? A camera— or, rather, cameras—an eye for action, and a talent for capturing iconic sports images. John Biever, Walter Iooss Jr., Mickey Palmer and Tony Tomsic, who were featured last week in a one-hour documentary, Keepers of the Streak, on ESPN2 and ABC, have photographed 48 Super Bowls, from the first in 1967 where the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs, to last year’s Big Game where the Seattle Seahawks crushed the Denver Broncos. They were there when Joe Namath guaranteed and delivered victory for the New York Jets at Super Bowl III in 1969. They were there when Janet Jackson’s wardrobe famously malfunctioned during the halftime show in 2004. They were there all six times the Pittsburgh Steelers claimed victory. And now, as they gear up for next Sunday’s 49th Super Bowl in Glendale, Ariz., these four talented lensmen share their memories, insights and, of course, their favorite shots.

SUPER SHOTS
JOHN BIEVER
SUPER BOWL XXII
John Biever was only 15 years old when he shot Super Bowl I alongside his father, the late Vernon Biever, who was there as team photographer for the Green Bay Packers. Biever, 63, says his all-time favorite Super Bowl photo emerged from this game: legendary Packers coach Vince Lombardi walking off the field. “It’s probably not my best shot, but it’s special to me because my dad is in the background,” Biever says. “Vince Lombardi and my dad in the same frame.” He continued to shoot SUPER BOWL I Super Bowls for the NFL every year until Super Bowl XX in 1986, when he started working for Sports Illustrated, ultimately shooting four Super Bowl covers for the magazine, among his more than 130 overall.
WALTER IOOSS JR.
With more than 300 Sports Illustrated cover shots to his credit, Walter Iooss Jr., 71, is widely considered to be America’s preeminent sports photographer. But he may be more famous for his contributions to the annual SI swimsuit issue, which has showcased his shots of supermodels from Cheryl Tiegs, Tyra Banks and Christie Brinkley to current star Kate Upton. “To be honest, I shouldn’t even be shooting the Super Bowl because to be good at it you have to do it all the time,” says Iooss, who now rarely photographs football games. “It’s like playing the piano: You get rusty. The only reason I’m assigned is the streak.” Still, Iooss, who has documented every Super Bowl moment from the undefeated Miami Dolphins win in Super Bowl VII to last year’s post-game blast of confetti (“a blizzard of blue and green with two orange jerseys walking away”), has his game day tricks: “I arrive as late as possible,” he says, to avoid traffic and security lines. Then he positions himself in an end zone and stays put rather than floating up and down the sidelines as most photographers do. He plans to shoot his 50th Super Bowl in 2016. After that, he says, he will take it one year at a time.

MICKEY PALMER
T:10”
Native New Yorker Mickey Palmer checked himself out of a hospital in January 1979 so he wouldn’t miss Super Bowl XIII. “I had a heart attack a week before the game and they wanted to do an angioplasty,” he says. “I asked the doctor, ‘Can you guarantee I’ll be out by Monday?’ He said, ‘No.’” So Palmer flew the coop. Today, the 71-year-old is in a similar situation: He needs back surgery but is putting it off until after this year’s Big Game. And he’s determined to be on the sidelines again in 2016 when he and his three colleagues will mark their 50th Super Bowl. “I’m going to go until I can’t do it anymore,” says Palmer of football’s biggest day. “I love it so much. I get chills when I think about it.”

Q: Is there anything in the works to bring Mitch Albom’s book The Time Keeper to the screen or TV? —Scott Canfield, Erie, Pa. A: At present, there is no word on whether or not The Time Keeper will go from book to movie. JASON O’MARA
The Dublin-born actor, 42, from TV’s Band of Brothers, Terra Nova, and Vegas, plays George Washington in the History Channel’s miniseries Sons of Liberty, premiering Jan. 25. How does an Irish lad land a role as the first president of the United States? “My agent called and said, ‘History is wondering if you’d like to play George Washington.’ I was flattered. There were quite a few moments, including reading the Declaration of Independence, that I found irresistible as an actor.” Are you a history buff? “I’m a history nerd, particularly military history. They had already begun production by the time I signed up, so I had to whittle down my research to reading Ron Chernow’s biography Washington: A Life, and re-reading David McCullough’s 1776. Everything I needed was in those books.” You’re married to Paige Turco, currently starring in The CW’s The 100, which shoots in Vancouver. You’re shooting the upcoming USA Network series Complications in Atlanta. How do you make it work? “They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. It’s very difficult, but we make it work.”
A: Curtis, 56, is playing a high school principal in the new movie Spare Parts, based on the true David-and-Goliath tale of four students from low-funded Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix, who took on mighty Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a national robotics competition. “It’s as uplifting a story as any I’ve ever heard,” she says.
