Q: Is it true that Bob Odenkirk was up for the Steve Carell role in The Office before he got the role of Saul Goodman on Breaking Bad? —Patrick S., Orange, N.J.

A: Yes, it’s true, Odenkirk was being considered until Carell became available. “Steve did a wonderful job. I can’t imagine anyone else doing it,” Odenkirk says. But Odenkirk’s chance to be the star of a series has finally come with AMC’s Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad prequel that airs Monday nights. “I have confidence in the show, but I’m not spending money I haven’t made yet,” says the Illinois native, 52.

WALTER SCOTT ASKS ...

JOHN TURTURRO He’s entertained us in the movies Quiz Show, Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski, Transformers, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and, most recently, Exodus: Gods and Kings. Now Turturro, 57, joins other notables— including singer Tony Bennett, U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia—talking about their heritage in the four-hour documentary series The Italian Americans, premiering Tues., Feb. 17, on PBS. Why is this show important to you? “I think the role of Italians in America hasn’t been welldocumented because a lot of the people that came here weren’t that book-savvy, and there weren’t that many writers. who you are and where you come from, it’s hard to understand your place now.” So many movies about Italians feature the mafia. Is that a consideration when you take a role? “Years ago, I played some of those parts, but I’ve tried consciously not to do that so much now.” Do you prefer acting in comedies or dramas? “I really like things that are both, because I think life is both.” What do you love about life right now? “I’m working at home, so that’s good. My kids are doing well. I have a nice relationship with my wife. Those are the hard things to have— Email your questions and to keep. NEW! Q: What were david giuntoli’s favorite fairy tales growing up? Were they scary ones, like on grimm? —Jason R., Des Moines

Simple meets smart with the GreatCall® Touch3, the new smartphone from the creators of the original, easy-to-use Jitterbug ® cell phone. EASY Now you can talk, text, email, download apps and browse the Internet with ease. Unlike other smartphones that are complicated with tiny icons and multiple screens, the Touch3 is easy to use right from the moment you turn it on. Everything you want to do, from texting to taking photos, is organized in a single list on one screen with large, legible letters. This simplified approach takes all the guesswork out of using a smartphone and puts everything right at your fingertips.

A: The star of Grimm (Friday nights on NBC) wasn’t into fairy tales as a boy but enjoyed getting spooked. “I loved scary movies, but I had an almost James Joyce-like fear of God and the devil,” says Giuntoli, 34. “I happened to see The Exorcist when I was 8 years old. It destroyed me.”

SMART Built by Samsung, the Touch3 has an ultra-modern look and has been specially designed with GreatCall’s signature simplicity. The 4-inch display and full-size on-screen keyboard make typing effortless, while the built-in camera lets you capture and share photos anywhere. The Touch3 comes preloaded with GreatCall’s award-winning health and safety apps, including 5Star ® and Urgent Care, so you can get the help you need wherever, whenever you need it.

Love Why We

STEAMY ROMANCES

Novelist ANN HOOD explores the breathless intoxication of being tortured by desires and dreams. torical romance) wrote: “I find that by some unfortunate chance I continue to want you, you jadeeyed sorceress.” I have green eyes! I could be a jade-eyed sorceress! Grand love stories of this sort took place in exotic settings like Ireland and Mexico instead of towns like mine. Surely part of the appeal was to transport me to these places, to make me imagine I lived in a world where I, like Laura in Bound for Desire, might need to send a cable to Lady Honoria in Baden-Baden, wherever Baden-Baden might be. I considered changing my name. How could someone with the mundane, common name Ann ever expect to star in an epic love story? One summer, I developed a crush on a friend of my brother’s, a college boy—an older man! He did not arrive with a team of horses, but in a white VW Bug. Instead of a partially unbuttoned poet’s shirt, he wore a pocket tee and frayed jeans. Still, he whisked me away to far off places, like the beach with the big waves where my parents refused to take me. He tormented me too, by loving a doe-eyed, age-appropriate girl

named Kathy, who had a bracelet of tiny bells around her ankle, which made her jingle as she walked. How I hated that happy sound. Such sweet torture that summer as I waited for the eggbeater sound of his VW approaching, and cried at night over my jingling rival. Eventually, the boy returned to college. Eventually, I grew up. I realize now that I read not just

to learn how to live, but to remind myself to keep dreaming. After all, who doesn’t want an epic love story, a grand saga, an adventure of the heart? As Fifty Shades of Grey’s Anastasia Steele tells us when she meets Christian: My face is aflame. Yes! My heart pounds. Yes! I can’t breathe. Yes! It’s intoxicating. Yes! Yes! Yes! Isn’t this, in the end, love after all?

ANN HOOD is the author of seven novels, including the bestseller The Knitting Circle and, most recently, The Italian Wife, as well as a memoir, Comfort. She is also the editor of Knitting Yarns: Writers on Knitting. The winner of two Pushcart prizes, she lives in Providence, R.I.

efore there was Fifty Shades of Grey—the book or the movie, which opened yesterday—back in the last century, there was me, a young girl in a rundown New England mill town waiting for— no! yearning for!—love. Like young girls everywhere, I had no idea what love was, or what it would look like when it finally arrived. So I created my vision of love from books. And not just any books, but the bodice rippers that came into popularity right as I turned old enough to get my first bra. Thanks to The Flame and the Flower and Sweet Savage Love, what I dreamed for in my allwhite bed at night was an older guy, someone 16 or even 17, someone brash and handsome who would abduct me in my wagon train or elegant carriage. Since our family car was a Chevy Impala, that felt especially exciting. Love, I understood, was blissful torture. We would be thrown together and torn apart, again and again, by interlopers and grand plot twists until he confessed something like Rosemary Rogers (the queen of his-

he chances that an average American can retire well seem to be getting slimmer. But not everyone is average. Some people may need to save more while others are already accruing a good-sized nest egg. Which one are you? A rough, but fairly good indicator of how you’re doing is the size of your portfolio as it compares to your annual (pre-tax) income, according to T. Rowe Price’s Stuart Ritter, CFP. The targets in the chart below assume that you’ll retire at 65, need about 75 percent of your preretirement income and that Social Security income will cover about a third of your expenditures.

If you’re close, you may be squeezing nickels where you don’t need to or tossing at night over imaginary money problems. “I’d say that describes about 20 percent of the clients who walk through my door,” says Bob Gerstemeier, CFP, chair of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA). But both Ritter and Gerstemeier agree that over-saving beats under-saving. “Foregoing some discretionary purchases today is a lot better than saving too little and having to forego necessities tomorrow,” Ritter says. —Russell Wild, author of Bond Investing for Dummies FEBRUARY 15, 2015 | 11

Itchy Senior Skin’s Hidden Cause (Hint: It’s in Your Medicine Cabinet) The older we get, the more our bodies change, especially our skin. One of the biggest changes: it itches more than ever. “Itching is a common problem as we age, says Vishakha Gigler, M.D., a dermatologist from Encinitas, CA. “The skin changes, often becoming thinner, drier and more susceptible to irritants.” Biological changes are one thing, but there is now strong evidence to support the thinking that another factor is partly to blame: prescription and non-prescription medications. Dr. Gigler says, “I often see seniors in my practice who are suffering from itchy skin. Medical conditions and certain medications can be an underlying cause.” Medications commonly prescribed to senior citizens – including pain relievers, blood pressure medications, sleep aids and antibiotics – can often cause increases in skin sensitivity and itch. Many seniors seek relief from itch with products containing corticosteroids like hydrocortisone, which is a topical steroid, but this can present another problem. According to medical professionals, steroidal creams like those containing hydrocortisone carry their own side effects, including thinned skin, allergic reactions and more itching. Fortunately, one of the best selling, most-effective topical itch relievers is steroid-free and safe for the whole family to use: TriCalm® hydrogel. TriCalm is a soothing, non-prescription gel that is

guaranteed to relieve itch. TriCalm’s strong guarantee and effectiveness are why dermatologists throughout the country are recommending TriCalm to their patients year round. In fact, TriCalm has been proven to relieve itch 5-times better than hydrocortisone 1%.*

While other products can take up to 24 hours and require repeated applications to get the full beneft, TriCalm works almost immediately, providing rapid relief from itch with a single application; and because TriCalm is steroid-free, it is safe for the whole family to use. TriCalm is also backed by a 100% Money-Back “Itch Free Guarantee,” which promises the product will relieve your itchy skin, or you can send back the empty tube for a full refund.** TriCalm is available for purchase at several major retailers, including Walmart, Walgreens and CVS/pharmacy. For more information about TriCalm, including the Itch Free Guarantee, user reviews and where to buy the product, visit: www.TriCalm.com.

I don’t think it’s fair.” She did four months of research for Still Alice, talking to real women with Alzheimer’s, doctors working with patients, and visiting a long-term care facility; even taking a cognitive test herself for the experience. And the results have left viewers moved to tears, and critics lining up to hand her statues. For while she’s already won a Golden Globe, a Critic’s Choice award and a trophy from the Screen Actors Guild, she may finally nab an Academy Award, too. And after great success with her children’s books—the Freckleface Strawberry series (based on her childhood nickname) and My Mom is a Foreigner (based on her mother, who was born in Scotland)—Moore has a five-book deal with Random House to write more Freckleface Strawberry books, two of which are slated for release this summer. And she couldn’t feel happier for all that she has. “The family that I have,” she says. “The friends. The marriage. How lucky am I?” She only hopes Still Alice affects viewers the same way it did her. “It’s uplifting,” she says. “We didn’t make it in the spirit of loss or diminishment. Really, it’s about what you love, who you value and how much you love being alive.”

closer to loving life than when you’re closest to loss.” And Moore is loving her life right now. The actress, 54, lives in New York City with her husband, director Bart Freundlich, who she’s been with for 19 years and married to for 10. They have two kids, son Caleb, 17, and daughter Liv, 12. And home really is where her heart is. “Right before I met my husband, I always felt as if the party was happening somewhere else,” she says. “Like, ‘Where is everybody else going?’ And once I met him and we had our children, I was like, ‘This is where the party is.’ There’s nowhere else I want to be. I see a tremendous amount of purpose and a feeling of belonging.” When Moore carries that sense of purpose to her work, Hollywood can’t help but sit up and take notice. For whether she’s meant to or not, Moore has become a truly positive representation of the 21st century woman. Not only is she a mom with a family and a five-time Oscar nominee (many predict she’ll take home her first statuette for Best Actress for her performance in Still Alice at next Sunday’s awards), she’s also carved out a strong niche for herself working in both

mainstream and quality independent films that mean something. Also, she doesn’t take her roles to prove a point. She does it, she says, because she loves to tell a good story. “I’m always excited by really interesting narratives,” Moore says, “and within a great narrative you can generally find a great character.” She’s built those characters in roles ranging from the soap opera As the World Turns to critically acclaimed turns in the movies Boogie Nights, Far from Heaven, The Hours and The Kids Are All Right to comedic parts like the one she played on TV in 30 Rock opposite her Still Alice costar Alec Baldwin. Moore says her draw to family drama is probably due to her parents, who both worked in fields of human behavior. Her father, a former paratrooper (she was born on a military base in North Carolina), became a trial lawyer and judge. And her mother was a psychologist and social worker. “My mother was fascinated by behavior,” Moore says. “She talked about that stuff all the time. She was very interested in families.”

When it comes to women, “it’s been a really good year,” says Francis Lawrence, who directed Moore in the twopart The Hunger Games: Mockingjay series and jumped at the chance to have her play President Alma Coin in the last installments of the series. “She’s a pro,” he says, with “fierce intelligence. She is so, so smart.” She’s also one of the most hardworking actresses he’s worked with. “Julianne is very specific,” he says of how she approaches her work. “She has it mapped out, she has a plan. Tableumbo Roll Around the

Let the More than the sum of its

G

parts, gumbo is a traditional Mardi Gras (Feb. 17) indulgence. There’s little consensus over what goes into the signature dish of New Orleans, except that the best gumbos are made at home. Lifetime Crescent City resident Poppy Tooker, who beat Bobby Flay in a gumbo throwdown, is writing a cookbook on New Orleans’ second-oldest restaurant, Tujague’s. Here, she shares her gumbo recipe, loaded with chicken, sausage and shellfish.

Mardi Gras Gumbo ¾ lb smoked sausage, sliced ¾ lb boneless, skinless chicken breast, cubed 1 cup vegetable oil 1 cup all-purpose flour

2. Brown smoked sausage in the fat remaining in the Dutch oven. Remove.

1 large onion, finely chopped 3 celery ribs, finely chopped 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped

3. Sauté chicken in the same pan until lightly browned. Remove.

4 quarts chicken broth 2 tsp dried thyme 2 bay leaves ½ cup thinly sliced green onions ½ lb Gulf shrimp, peeled ½ lb claw crabmeat 1 pint Gulf oysters Salt and hot sauce to taste 1½ Tbsp filé powder (more to taste) Hot cooked rice

about 3 minutes. Add celery and bell pepper and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add chicken broth, thyme and bay leaves and bring mixture to a boil.

1. Pierce skin of fresh sausage and brown it in a large Dutch oven. Remove from pan. Let cool, slice into rings and set aside. Celery, bell pepper and onions are “the holy trinity” of Creole cooking.

4. Add oil to fat in pan and heat until shimmering. Stir in flour (this is your roux). Cook, stirring constantly, until roux is a milk chocolate brown, 10 to 15 minutes (depending on how high the heat). Add onion and cook, stirring constantly until the roux Bear fat was darkens to a bitter-sweet chocolate color, the original choice for roux by the Cajuns.

5. Return sausages and chicken to the pan and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook until thickened and fragrant, about 45 minutes.

Filé powder is the ground leaves of the sassafras tree.

6. Add green onions. Add shellfish. Cook until shrimp are pink and edges of oysters ruffle, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and hot sauce. 7. Remove from heat and stir in filé powder. Serve over rice. Serves 10 to 12.

If you don’t like or can’t find any of the seafood in this recipe, just use more chicken or sausage. Gumbo is a very personal dish and you can put just about anything in it.

BREO ELLIPTA can cause serious side effects, including: • See “What is the most important information I should know about BREO ELLIPTA?” • pneumonia. Call your healthcare provider if you notice any of the following symptoms: • increase in mucus (sputum) production • change in mucus color • fever • chills • increased cough • increased breathing problems (Continued on the next page) © PARADE Publications 2015. same place every time.) More worrisome: When the keys turn up in odd places, like the refrigerator or trashcan, or you leave them in the ignition with the car running. People with dementia are also less able to retrace their steps to find items—and may forget what they’re looking for.

You can’t retrieve a word that’s on the tip of your tongue don’t worry. Blame “blockers,” words that sound similar and sidetrack your brain. Trying to say rhinoceros, you get stuck on hippopotamus or triceratops. Usually, though, the right word comes to you later. More worrisome: Inventing words, like horn-cow for rhino, especially for everyday words like cat or toothbrush. Or not organizing words into logical sentences: “I mouthbrushed clean mouth.”

You have no idea why you entered a room don’t worry. This lapse can hit anyone who’s distracted, multi-tasking, stressed or nervous. More worrisome: Increasing lapses, or difficulty concentrating and following directions. People with Alzheimer’s develop trouble following a recipe, reading, writing or learning to use a new gadget.

You paid a bill twice don’t worry about random screw-ups. Disorganization happens. More worrisome: Constant mistakes, unpaid bills, checkbook errors, trouble making change in a store or not knowing the month or year when you write a check. Problems

with money and finances often show up before memory loss.

You get lost while driving don’t worry. It's no big deal, especially if you're going somewhere new or have a lousy sense of direction. More worrisome: Getting lost on familiar routes, blanking on where you’re headed. An uptick in fender-benders is also a red flag.

Kristen Stewart (left) plays the daughter to on-screen mom Moore as Alice.

Your best reality check Family and friends tend to spot warning signs of Alzheimer’s first—and even more reliably than cognitive screening tests, found a 2010 Washington University School of Medicine study. They best see patterns of odd mistakes and telltale personality changes (like anxiety and withdrawal). When in doubt, check with your doctor. Many causes of symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s—depression, medications, insomnia and the stress of excessive worry— are reversible. And, hopeful news: Researchers continue to make discoveries that provide insights into Alzheimer’s and are investigating new drug treatments for the disease. —Paula Spencer Scott, the author of Surviving Alzheimer’s: Practical Tips and Soul-Saving Wisdom for Caregivers

BRIEF SUMMARY (cont’d) (serious side effects, cont’d) • thrush (fungal infection) in mouth and throat. You may develop a yeast infection (Candida albicans) in your mouth or throat. Rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after using BREO ELLIPTA to help prevent thrush in your mouth and throat. • serious allergic reactions. Call your healthcare provider or get emergency medical care if you get any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction: • rash • swelling of the face, mouth, and tongue • hives • breathing problems • sudden breathing problems immediately after inhaling your medicine • effects on heart • increased blood pressure • a fast and/or irregular heartbeat • chest pain • effects on nervous system • tremor • nervousness • reduced adrenal function (adrenal insuffciency). Adrenal insuffciency is a condition in which the adrenal glands do not make enough steroid hormones. This can happen when you stop taking oral corticosteroid medicines (such as prednisone) and start taking a medicine containing an inhaled corticosteroid (such as BREO ELLIPTA). When your body is under stress from fever, trauma (such as a car accident), infection, surgery, or worse COPD symptoms, adrenal insuffciency can get worse and may cause death. Symptoms of adrenal insuffciency include: • feeling tired (fatigue) • nausea and vomiting • lack of energy • low blood pressure • weakness • changes in laboratory blood values (sugar, potassium) • weakened immune system and increased chance of getting infections (immunosuppression) • bone thinning or weakness (osteoporosis) • eye problems including glaucoma and cataracts. You should have regular eye exams while using BREO ELLIPTA. Common side effects of BREO ELLIPTA include: • runny nose and sore throat • upper respiratory tract infection • headache • thrush in the mouth and/or throat. Rinse your mouth without swallowing after use to help prevent this. Tell your healthcare provider about any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the side effects with BREO ELLIPTA. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for more information. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

is there any connection between handedness and the side on which one parts his or her hair? i am right-handed, but i recall a conversation many years ago between my parents (both deceased) that indicated i was lefthanded at birth. i never thought much about it, but i do notice that i part my hair on the opposite side of most of my friends. —S.R., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

More than 90 percent of right-handers have hair whorls that rotate clockwise, making it natural for them to part their hair on the left and comb the top to the right. Some may choose to part their hair on the other side for aesthetic reasons, such as enhancing a preferred side of the face, but their hair will not lay that way as easily. On non-right-handers (lefties and people who use both hands for many tasks), the whorls rotate in either direction with roughly equal likelihood. So if most of your friends part their hair on the left (natural for righties, who are in the majority), and you part your hair on the right, this is an indication—coupled with the talk you remember—that you may be a converted non-right-hander.
