WALTER SCOTT ASKS…

QUVENZHANÉ WALLIS

The Louisiana-born star, 9, is up for Best Actress for her role in the fantasy drama Beasts of the Southern Wild.

You’re the youngest Best Actress nominee in history. What does that mean to you? It’s exciting. Everybody’s proud, and that makes me proud. I had to learn what it was. I kept asking, “Who’s Oscar?” If I win, I have a special place for it on top of a bookshelf in my room. What do you like most about acting? [She will next appear in the historical drama Twelve Years a Slave.] Everything. You meet different people and see new places. I had never acted before. I was nervous, but I got used to it. Your name [pronounced Kwe-VEN-zhah-nay] is so unique. What does it mean? “Quven” is a combination of my parents’ first names, and “zhané” means “fairy” in Swahili. I like to hear people try to say it—it’s kind of funny when they get it wrong! Send questions to personality@parade.com or P.O. Box 5001, Grand Central Station, New York, N.Y. 10163-5001.

A: Although Ben Affleck and his Iran hostage drama, Argo, have won virtually every major award since the star was snubbed for a Best Director nod, the official rules state that “no ‘write-in’ votes [which have been banned since 1936] shall be counted on the final ballot.” As a producer of Argo, however, Affleck could still walk away with an Oscar if his film wins Best Picture. Q: How much of the tiger in Life of Pi was real? —James D., Fall River, Mass.

A: Richard Parker, the Bengal tiger that accompanies Pi on his oceanic

journey, is mostly a result of CG wizardry. “He was 85 percent digital and 15 percent real,” says visual effects supervisor (and Oscar nominee) Bill Westenhofer. “The digital character took about a year to build and featured 10 million computerized hairs. We used complicated simulations to mimic the look and movements of the four real tigers that were used in the film. Of the 170 tiger shots in the movie, only 23 were real.” Q: How did the Lincoln costume designer create the looks for Sally Field and Daniel Day-Lewis? —Sheila L., Chicago

A: The 16th president and his wife “were widely photographed, so there was a wealth of reference,” says costume designer and first-time Oscar nominee Joanna Johnston. “Mary Todd Lincoln had specific color tastes—purples, violets, blues, pinks—which was fantastic. I had all the dimensions for Lincoln’s trademark hat; I worked with a hatmaker in Italy, and it only took two attempts before we got it perfect. Daniel looked great in it!” < Costume sketches

Give In his new book, With Charity for All, former NPR head Ken Stern exposes disheartening flaws in the nonprofit sector. Want to make your own donations count? Stern offers these tips.

1 WITH OR WITHOUT YOU Painfully raw and gorgeously written, Domenica Ruta’s memoir chronicles her struggle to escape the mistakes of her drug-addict mother.

The way most charities are rated (based on factors like “administrative ratios” and salaries) has little to do with how effective they are. Before you

donate to an organization, check it out on givewell.org or charitynavigator .com. Also look at the group’s website—any legitimate charity will post its audited

2

Be loyal to the organizations you believe in. They need consistent investments over time to grow and flourish.

3

If you want to start a charity, investigate opportunities for federal funding. (Grants.gov is one good source of information.) The government gives more money to U.S. charities than individuals, foundations, and corporations do combined.

MacFarlane at about age 3. “He wasn’t a kid who had lemonade stands,” says his sister, Rachael. “He was working hard at cartooning.” phenomenally well. I think there might be a team of Seth MacFarlanes out there.”

t feels that way when you meet this man of many contradictions. Baby-faced at 39, he looks like the chilled-out dude next door (“I get a lot of ‘Hey, aren’t you Peter Brady?’ ” he says, rolling his eyes). But he’s a serious singer and musician who’s sold out New York’s Carnegie Hall and London’s Royal Albert Hall and whose 2011 album of standards, Music Is Better Than Words, earned two Grammy nominations. And while his characters mock almost every religion, ethnic group, public figure, physical challenge, and bodily function, MacFarlane himself can be quite sensitive to criticism. After Entertainment Weekly’s Ken Tucker, a longtime MacFarlane critic, poohpoohed the idea of him as Oscar host, MacFarlane called Tucker out personally on Twitter: “Please tell me how I may earn a review as glowing as the one you gave Urkel.” “I think at times I read too much of my own press,” he admits. “I wish I was better at taking in how great my life is, but that’s surprisingly elusive. I tend to be very hard on myself and insecure about failing no With Family Guy characters. “Reporters say to me, ‘I love the show,’ ” MacFarlane says, “but no one will write that.” matter what happens.”

orn in 1973 in tiny Kent, Conn., MacFarlane knew he wanted to be an animator from the age of 5. “If Seth wasn’t watching Fred Flintstone or Bugs Bunny, he was in his bedroom making flipbooks and drawing on anything he could get his hands on,” says his sister, Rachael, who voices the character of Hayley Smith on American Dad! How would she describe her big bro? “Ridiculously focused,” she says. In fact, MacFarlane got his first paying gig at 9, penning his own comic strip for the Kent Good Times Dispatch for $5 a week. Life at the MacFarlanes’ was traditional in many ways. Seth’s ancestors William and Mary Brewster were Mayflower passengers. His parents, Ann and Ronald, had a fierce work ethic, at one point juggling three jobs each. But the rules at home were loose: Cursing was okay. The TV stayed on during dinner. Offcolor jokes got no push-back. “There wasn’t this puritanical fear of certain areas of humor or behavior,” says MacFarlane, who defines himself now as superliberal and religion-averse. “I remember my parents watching The Cosby Show and complaining about what terrible parents the Huxtables were, because they were so militant with their kids.” The laid-back approach worked for MacFarlane, who says, “I’m one of the few people in Hollywood who actually had a good childhood.” Sadly, MacFarlane’s mother passed away in 2010 of cancer. “She spoke in superlatives all the time,” he says, “and we kind of joke that since she had used them all up, what would she have said about [my hosting] the Oscars? But in all seriousness, I would have liked for her to have seen my movie. I would have liked for her to see the Oscars. It would have been nice.” In college, at the Rhode Island School of Design, MacFarlane created a bawdy 10-minute cartoon for his senior thesis, The Life of Larry, which won him a job animating for HannaBarbera in Los Angeles. It wasn’t long before he sold Family Guy, which made him, at 24, the youngest person ever to run a network show. If you haven’t seen Family Guy, picture an Archie Bunker type named Peter Griffin at the head of a blue-collar New England household. His wife’s a kleptomaniac who once dated Gene Simmons from Kiss; the dog drives a Prius and likes his martinis dry; and baby Stewie, whom

young fan base. “Ask your kids,” he says in one of the Oscar ads introducing him. Nobody familiar with MacFarlane’s outrageous brand of humor is expecting business as usual at this year’s awards. Announcing the nominees last month, he drew facepalms for dropping a Hitler joke and ribbing actors like Robert De Niro and Tommy Lee Jones. Even now, over a lunch of grilled chicken in Los Angeles, he treats the nominees with less than genuflecting respect. Asked what he thinks of Les Misérables, up for eight Oscars including Best Picture, he hmmms and deadpans, “I only watched the first four and a half hours. I’ll try to get through the next three and a half tonight.” Wisecracks aside, it’s a golden time for MacFarlane. Family Guy reached its 200th episode last November; its sister series, American Dad!, has been picked up for a ninth season, and Family Guy spin-off The Cleveland Show recently wrapped production on season four. All those cheeky, pear-shaped characters have made MacFarlane the highest-paid TV writer in history; the contract he signed with Fox in 2008 earned him $100 million. Meanwhile, Ted, about a potty-mouthed teddy bear (MacFarlane cowrote, directed, coproduced, and did the talking), raked in half a billion dollars worldwide, becoming the highestgrossing R-rated comedy of all time (it also earned MacFarlane an Oscar nod for the song “Everybody Needs a Best Friend”). Says Ted ’s Mark Wahlberg, set to appear at the Academy Awards with his ursine costar, “I honestly don’t know how Seth does so many things so

MacFarlane voices in a British accent, is precocious beyond all reason (and once scoffed at his future self for still reading PARADE). Canceled in 2002, the series was revived after fans flocked to it in reruns and on DVD. At this point, though, MacFarlane thinks the end might be near regardless. “How much more is there to find out about these characters?” he says. “You don’t want to start concocting things like what if Peter

A Ted sequel is also in the works. But MacFarlane plans to make a western comedy first, à la Blazing Saddles, and he’s working on a live-action sitcom for Fox called Dads, about two young men whose fathers move in with them. He’s also the unlikely coproducer behind an earnest reboot of the Cosmos miniseries, hosted in the 1980s by famed astronomer Carl Sagan. The project, due on Fox in winter 2014, feels necessary right now, he says. “There’s been an unsettling rejection of science

America’s Favorite Bear Smokey reflects on becoming a “modern” bear, why he’ll never need a yacht, and how a little jar of honey can go a long way.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? A day fishing in the outdoors, followed by a nap under a shady, towering oak tree, hat over my eyes, no wildfires to worry about. What is your greatest fear? I just got a publicist, and he tells me to make sure that my message doesn’t get lost in today’s climate of media oversaturation. And I really don’t like bees.

When and where were you happiest? Funny story – there’s talk of a “Smokey” movie, so I was in Cannes, taking some meetings during the film festival – 60-foot yachts, parties everywhere, fame and fortune beckoning, and all I could think about was getting back to the outdoors. So there you have it. What do you most dislike about your appearance? I come off as this cuddly, sweet, fuzzy bear – but I have sharp teeth, and big claws – not that I would use them, but if people thought about ending up on the wrong side of them, maybe they’d be less careless in the outdoors. Other than that, I guess I could probably use a new pair of jeans.

Which living person do you admire the most? Those who really embrace the cause of preventing wildfires – you’ll find them clutching a “Golden Smokey Award.” What is the trait you most deplore in others? Callous disregard for our forests and wildlands.

If you were to die and come back as one thing, what would it be? There’s no one I would rather be. But Jack Nicholson comes close. That guy can tell some stories.

What is your greatest extravagance? A friend of mine gave me this amazing jar of honey from Paris – I only open it once a year on my birthday.

What is your most treasured possession? I’d be nothing without my hat.

What is your favorite journey? Spending time in any forest or wildland, anytime, anywhere. Give me some grass beneath my feet, trees above my head and I’m in heaven.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I’m doing that even as we speak. Most people think of me as old school – but I’m catching up with the times. Two years ago, I would have thought the Internet was a way to catch salmon–now I’m working on a MySpace page and a daily blog.

On what occasion do you lie? The only lying I do involves hibernation. Which living person do you most despise? Despise is a strong word – but when it comes to anyone who is careless with fire, let’s just say you don’t want to see me angry – I’m a Black Bear, not a teddy bear, remember? What or who is the greatest love of your life? The amazing wilderness that I am so lucky to call home, followed closely by a “special” lady bear in the Yellowstone area.

What is your most marked characteristic? I always say it’s my fur – but then again, how many bears have a motto? What do you most value in your friends? Honesty. Integrity. And a willingness to share food.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? 60+ years of preventing wildfires, but I’m just getting started.

Who are your heroes in real life? The men and women who put their lives on the line to prevent the spread of wildfires.

Who is your favorite hero of fiction? I know it’s ironic – but I love Goldilocks.

What is it that you most dislike? Wildfires! Boy, these questions are too easy.

in the past couple decades. We used to have national pride in space travel. Now we only care about vampires and witches.” For all his popularit y, MacFarlane keeps a rather low profile. He lives alone in a Beverly Hills villa he bought a few years ago for $13.5 million. He says he has no real hobbies other than playing piano. He splurged on a horse he hasn’t seen, let alone ridden, in many months. He owns a DeLorean car that’s exactly like the one Marty McFly drove in one of his favorite movies, Back to the Future. Though he’s been linked romantically to Cameron Diaz, Amanda Bynes, Eliza Dushku, and, most recently, Game of Thrones beauty Emilia Clarke, MacFarlane folds his arms over his chest when the conversation turns to dating. “Do we have to?” he asks, but then obliges. “I’m wide open to getting married, but actors are not easy people to date. You end up sharing that person with this other mistress that is their career. I very much like the traditional courtship method of making a date. That’s what they do in normal places, but Hollywood’s not normal.” Not normal might be okay tonight, actually. “You want Sacheen Littlefeather to come up and accept an award,” MacFarlane says, recalling other classic Oscar moments. As host, he’s looking to “find a balance somewhere between Billy Crystal and Ricky Gervais,” he says, though it was former emcee Hugh Jackman whose advice hit closest to home. “He told me, ‘Don’t be too kind. Shake it up a little bit.’ ” As if anyone needed to tell MacFarlane that. 10 • FEBRUARY 24, 2013

enough to grow up with books discover a character who inspires them. When I was a kid, a lot of girls loved teenage sleuth Nancy Drew. She was popular, pretty, and the smartest person in any room. As a 9-year-old girl, I was none of these things, but I could have overlooked Nancy’s perfection had she not been richer than every family on our block. Combined. Nancy Drew? Please. I had more in common with Pebbles Flintstone. I yearned for a character whose fiery spirit would embolden mine. A girl who knew what it was like to be a working-class kid in small-town Ohio. A girl who, give or take a lost parent or two and her pet monkey, was my fictional twin. Hello, Pippi Longstocking. I met 9-year-old Pippi at my ninth birthday party. Mom plopped Astrid Lindgren’s book on my lap and warned me to stay away from the other kids because I had chicken pox. Understand, this was my first party ever that included guests other than my siblings and the relatives on Dad’s everchanging “Allowed to Enter” list. There I was, sitting on the couch in the living room,

watching everyone in the dining room gobble up my cake. Years later, Mom claimed this moment launched my writing career, as my account of the experience grew more horrific with each passing day. By week two, I was an orphaned child

holed up in a tree house, peering between the floorboards to see how happy children lived. On. My. Birthday. “So much drama,” my mother said, shaking her head. “We write from our wounds,” I said, pressing my palm to my chest. I was 32 at the time. Pippi was my one true friend that day, and on many days to come. She was a mighty force of inappropriate behavior powered by good intentions. She was me, except that her mother was gone and her

father was a buccaneer captain gallivanting on the high seas. She also didn’t have to go to school. Minor details. Pippi was poor but never impoverished, abandoned but never alone. Her pigtails were so tight they stood straight out from her freckled face. That was the hair I wanted to have, instead of the bouffant sprouting from my head. This was during Mom’s perm phase. My sisters and I marched into the beauty shop as children and left looking like the shortest grandmothers in Ohio. Pippi carried out my every desire. She peppered adults with any question she wanted to ask (the nerve!) and was to-thebone loyal to her friends. What I most loved was her intolerance for bullies. She hurled them into trees and onto rooftops. With one arm. I still harbor that fantasy. Don’t ask for names. By the time I was a teen, I was keen on other scrappy girls of fiction—Scout Finch, for example, and Francie Nolan— but I never lost that kinship with Pippi. I still admire her sense of justice. Over the years I’ve written about a lot of bullies. Restaurant managers who skim servers’ tips. Men who mistake women for chattel. Prosecutors who send innocent men to jail. Each time, I pull up a chair and raise my fingers to the keyboard, and Pippi Longstocking starts to type. Or so I want to believe.

Lo S B ng ou ett er nd er Ba a tte nd ry Lif e

Introducing the all-new Jitterbug® Plus. We’ve made it even better… without making it harder to use. All my friends have new cell phones. They carry them around with them all day, like mini computers, with little tiny keyboards and hundreds of programs which are supposed to make their life easier. Trouble is… my friends can’t use them. The keypads are too small, the displays are hard to see and the phones are so complicated that my friends end up borrowing my Jitterbug when they need to make a call. I don’t mind… I just got a new phone too… the new Jitterbug Plus. Now I have all the things I loved about my Jitterbug phone along with some great new features that make it even better! GreatCall® created the Jitterbug with one thing in mind – to offer people a cell phone that’s easy to see and hear, simple to use and affordable. Now, they’ve made the cell phone experience even better with the Jitterbug Plus. It features a lightweight, comfortable design with a backlit keypad and big, legible numbers. There is even a dial tone so you know the phone is ready to use. You can also increase the volume with one touch and the speaker’s been improved so you get great audio quality and can hear every word. The battery has been improved too– it’s one of the longest lasting on the market– so you won’t have to charge it as often. The phone comes to you with your account already set up and is easy to activate.

HAVE YOU RESORTED TO THIS? Ask Marilyn By Marilyn vos Savant

A woman goes to a restaurant and orders a 12-inch pizza for $10. The waiter says the 15-inch pie for $15 is a better deal. But $15 is 50 percent more than $10; 15 inches is only 25 percent more than 12 inches. Is the bigger pizza really a better buy? —Michael Paul Storey,

Great for Men Too!

Kingston, Wash.

Not necessarily. A 12-inch pie contains about 113 square inches of pizza; a 15-inch pie has about 177 square inches. That makes the larger pizza a little cheaper per bite. (About 8.5 cents versus 8.8 cents per square inch.) But is that a better deal overall? Nope—if the woman orders the bigger pizza, she’ll spend more money and consume more calories than she intended.

Wash your greens. According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, leafy greens are responsible for 22 percent of food-borne illnesses in the U.S.—more than any other food. Other big offenders: dairy products (14 percent), fruits and nuts (12 percent), and poultry (10 percent). To help prevent the spread of germs, wash produce such as lettuce before eating.
