WALTER SCOTT ASKS...

BLAKELIVELY BLAKE

The former Gossip Girl TV star, 27, shares Earth Day plans for her chic website, preserve.us, which celebrates American artisans and their products. Her next film is Lionsgate’s romantic drama The Age of Adaline, opening April 24. What was the inspiration behind Preserve? “Mainly my be mom. She’s someone who could create a magical moment out of anything.”

How do you keep the site ecofriendly? “It’s very important to us to be conscious in our selections. We’re doing an exclusive collection for Earth Day with Amour Vert. For every shirt you buy from them, they plant a tree. They are doing everything they can to reduce their carbon footprint.” What do you do in your personal life to protect the planet? “My husband [Ryan Reynolds] turned a car that wasn’t supposed to be electric into an electric car by putting a thousand-pound battery in Lively with husband the trunk. He’s dangerously eco. Our Ryan Reynolds homes are solar, we have the compost in the garden and we do all the smaller things, like turning off lights in the house—things I didn’t do growing up that I have learned to be aware of.” The Age of Adaline is a love story but more than that. How would you describe it? “It’s about the relationship between love and time—and the beauty and tragedy in that.” What does it take these days to make you want to take a role? “It sure takes a lot, especially now that I’ve got a baby [born in December]. It has to be a film that creatively inspires me.”

Leonardo DiCaprio In 1998, the fivetime Academy Award nominee created the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (leonardodicaprio. com) dedicated to protecting Earth’s remaining wild places and wildlife, with a focus on renewable energy sources, rainforests, oceans and access to clean water.

Robert Redford The veteran actor has devoted a large portion of his

life to the environment, including founding the Sundance Preserve to protect the North Fork Canyon in Utah, serving as a trustee of the Natural Resources Defense Council (nrdc.org) since 1974 and producing The Green, a block of Sundance Channel programming that tackles issues such as solar energy and wilderness preservation.

Pierce Brosnan

The former James Bond star, who was inducted into the Environmental Hall of Fame (environmentalhalloffame.net) for his work hall against illegal il whale hunting and for wetlands protection, has served on the boards of the Natural Resources Defense Council (nrdc.org), California Coastal Protection Network (coastaladvocates.com) and Sea Shepherd (seashepherd.org).

Gisele Bundchen

The Brazilian supermodel makes fashion eco-friendly. Her Ipanema Gisele Bundchen line of sandals and flip flops, produced in Brazil, is manufactured without the use of rubber from the Amazon rainforest—and made using at least 30 percent recycled materials, with 99 percent of all factory waste recycled or reused.

EARTH

DAY

ACROSS AMERICA

This land is our land: In honor of Earth Day this Wednesday, check out 50 nifty eco-friendly things Americans are doing, from the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters. By Alison Gwinn • Cover illustrations by Amy Reid

Alabama

A 250-gallon aquarium and forest murals are part of what made Munford Elementary School in Munford., Ala., a Green Ribbon School.

Alaska

Kodiak High School students in Kodiak, Alaska, created a massive octopus named Ophelia entirely from marine trash (plastic bottles, grocery bags, fishing nets and cigarette lighters) to raise public awareness about ocean debris.

Arizona

17,000 square feet. That’s the size of the Diamondbacks’ solar canopy at Phoenix’s Chase Field that generates enough electricity to power the lights for 11 games.

Arkansas

Over 10,000 new trees were distributed by the Arbor Day Foundation and the Arkansas Forestry Commission after the devastating 2013 tornadoes.

CALIFORNIA Since 2008, Bea Johnson’s family has lived a zero-waste life in Mill Valley, Calif. Her family of four—including husband Scott and teenage sons Max and Léo—generate a mere quart of waste a year. How do they do it? By following the Five Rs: refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and rot (or compost).

Colorado

Fort Collins has ratified the most ambitious eco-plan of any city in the country. Under the city’s Climate Action Plan, they’ll reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 80 percent in 15 years and will be completely carbon neutral by 2050.

Connecticut

Connecticut’s legislature made food history in 2013 by signing the nation’s first genetically modified organism (GMO) labeling bill in 2013.

Bea Johnson and sons (below) only generate one jar (left) of waste each year.

Johnson, author of the popular website, zerowastehome.com, and the 2013 book Zero Waste Home: The Ultimate Guide to Simplifying Your Life by Reducing Your Waste (Scribner), says that even though they live simply— their wardrobes are spare (and mostly secondhand), and they donated all their books to the library—they also live a “modern life, not a hippie one,” with a car (a used Prius) and a TV. Her husband estimates that going “zero waste” has cut the family budget about 40 percent. More important is that by cutting down, “our life has switched to one based on experiences, not based on stuff,” says Johnson. “We have more time with the kids, more time on the weekends to go camping or backpacking. It’s put an emphasis on human relations.” Visit Parade.com/ZeroWaste for more of Johnson’s eco-friendly tricks. 4 | APRIL 19, 2015

Delaware

The Delaware Nature Society’s Stream Watch program is tackling the state’s polluted waterways. Everyday citizens are fighting back by helping test water samples throughout Delaware.

ILLINOIS The state has spent $1 million to install electric vehicle recharging stations along the iconic Route 66 from Chicago to St. Louis by this summer.

Florida

Daytona Beach-based NASCAR works out of two LEED-certified office buildings, its cars use a renewable fuel and the company plants 10 trees for each green flag that drops during races.

Georgia

LAYSAN DUCK BY REBECCA R. JACKREL/NEWSCOM; PRAIRIE FESTIVAL BY SCOTT SEIRER/PRAIRIE FESTIVAL

When Athens farmer Eric Wagoner created locallygrown.net—the world’s first online farmers market—he connected his customers with fresh food. The site has since spread to more than 100 communities nationwide.

HAWAII Last fall, the Hawaii Wildlife Center helped relocate 28 critically endangered Laysan Ducks (the rarest duck in the Northern Hemisphere) to a rehabilitated habitat.

Idaho

A team of Nature Conservancy scientists is working to combat environmental threats to species that were plentiful in Idaho when Lewis and Clark arrived in 1805—including Chinook salmon, elk and giant salamanders.

Kentucky

Claiborne Farm, the Paris-based horse farm once home to Secretariat, has donated 3,000 acres to the Bluegrass Conservancy, guaranteeing that the farm will remain undeveloped while upping the conservancy’s protected land to 17,000 acres.

The new Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis is the first in the U.S. to be LEED Silver certified. Local and recycled material was used in construction and rainwater is collected from the roof and used in toilets. A sky farm on the roof provides organic, healthy food for its patients.

Iowa

Some farmers in the state are trying STRIPS planting, in which 10 percent of their farmland is replanted with indigenous prairie plants. The technique reduces soil and nutrient loss and water runoff.

Kansas

The Prairie Festival, held every fall in Salina, is sponsored by the Land Institute, a 30-year-old nonprofit whose mission is to develop an ecologically stable agricultural system that doesn’t contribute to climate changes.

The Big Easy can become the Big Dirty after Mardi Gras revelers leave behind a load of cigarette butts. Enter 50 cigarette-butt-recycling receptacles, each labeled: “Recycle Your Butts Here.”

Maine

When the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor decided to expand its business school building, a gorgeous 250-year-old Bur oak with a 44-foot-diameter root ball was standing in the way. Instead of chopping down the tree, the school moved the big fellow 500 feet—at a cost of $400,000.

Minnesota

Louisiana

Indiana

Michigan

Even in the coldest winter, Minnesota’s Blue Earth County Justice Center, which houses a jail, plus an office and court, is kept warm by an underground geothermal heating system.

Mississippi

Through the Gear Grab program of the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation, lobstermen become voluntary stewards of the environment, retrieving abandoned traps, ropes, nets and buoys.

Yale-educated local farmer Charlie Munford sells organic beef and lamb to restaurants from Jackson to New Orleans. He raises his meats at Two Run Farm in Vaughn, Miss., the same way his grandfather did: no antibiotics and no hormones.

MARYLAND Honey, they shrunk the house: In 2012, husbandand-wife building team Bill and Sue Thomas launched Hobbitat, a tiny-house business that builds energy-efficient homes out of reclaimed materials.

Massachusetts

Whether it’s good old Yankee ingenuity or not, the Bay State comes in No. 1 as the most energy-efficient state in the union.

Missouri

Kingsville, Mo. is home to the 12-acre Heartland Harvest Garden, the nation’s largest edible garden. APRIL 19, 2015 | 5

Where the buffalo roam: The Bozeman-based American Prairie Reserve is working to assemble a 3.5 million-acre park of species-rich grasslands so wildlife such as bison and pronghorn sheep can range unimpeded.

New Jersey

Jersey-based TerraCycle, one of the world’s fastest-growing green companies, works with more than 100 big brands around the world to collect used packaging and upcycle the waste into new products, such as messenger bags made from Clif Bar wrappers and iPod cases formed from repurposed mail bags.

New Mexico

The Greater World Earthship Community, a 633-acre development in Cerros de Taos, is filled with passive solar houses made of natural materials like adobe and recycled tires, cans and other discarded items. The community grows its own food, harvests its own water, treats its own sewage and makes its own biodiesel fuel.

New York Nebraska

The Greenest Restaurant in America is the Grey Plume—whose chef and co-owner is Omaha native Clayton Chapman (see page 7 for his recipe for Pickled Beet Stems).

Wall Street banker George Pakenham is no idle threat when it comes to iding cars. He approaches thousands of idlers and says, “Excuse me for bothering you… but are you aware that it’s against the law to idle your car engine in NYC for more than three minutes?”

Nevada

All that sunshine helps: Nevada leads the nation in solar energy jobs per capita.

New Hampshire

Long live the soulful sound of the loon. New Hampshire’s Loon Preservation Committee monitors loons’ numbers and breeding, rescues and rehabilitates sick loons and builds nesting rafts.

NORTH CAROLINA Meet the Elf, a bug-like contraption with an enclosed cab, three wheels, pedals, a solar panel and a rechargeable battery from Organic Transit in Durham, N.C. A standard ELF seats one (like a bike) and can go 15 miles without pedaling.

North Dakota

Ducks Unlimited Preserve Our Prairies program is working to protect “prairie potholes,” shallow depressions that are one of the world’s best waterfowl nesting habitats, supporting millions of birds each year.

Ohio

The Russells Point, Ohio, Honda plant receives a substantial amount of its power from on-site wind turbines.

Oklahoma

Under a program from the Oklahoma Conservation Commission, state residents can buy ECOpasses ($5 to $200), with the money going directly to farmers and ranchers in the state who adopt no-till crop systems to stem erosion.

Oregon

The Portland Composts! program lets residents put yard debris and food scraps—eggs and eggshells, bread, pasta, beans, coffee grounds, table scraps, spoiled food—out on the curb for weekly pickup, vastly cutting down on landfill waste.

Pennsylvania

RHODE ISLAND Sol Chariots Pedicab Cooperative in Providence, the brainchild of twin sisters— and avid bicyclists—Ashley (pedaling in photo) and Ally Trull, gives carbon-free, pedal-powered taxi rides, makes deliveries and offers tours of Rhode Island’s capital city.

South Carolina

Working to buck the trend of aging American farmers (whose average age is 57), the Dirt Works Incubator Farm near Charleston offers a three-year training program for aspiring farmers.

South Dakota

At the Pine Ridge Reservation, students from Oglala Lakota College and others are building prototype housing as part of the Native American Sustainable Housing Initiative.

Tennessee

At Dickinson College in Carlisle, students grow organic vegetables and raise free-range livestock on the 50-acre, USDA-certified organic farm. The food they raise is served in the dining hall, sold at a local farmers market and donated to a community food bank.

A cleaner concert: Starting in 2014, the annual four-day Bonnaroo Music Festival launched Refill Revolution, installing water-refill stations where “sustainable Bonnaroovians” could refill their bottles for free from clean, on-site wells, saving 400,000 plastic water bottles from the landfill. continued on page 8

Table Around the

Don’t Toss It—Eat It! The best way to minimize food waste—and stretch your budget—is to use everything. Next time you have beets, don’t toss those pretty stems. Put them to use in this simple recipe from chef Clayton Chapman of the Grey Plume in Omaha, Neb. It demonstrates root-to-leaf cooking at its best. QUICK-PICKLED BEET STEMS Stems from 2 large red beets 2 Tbsp red wine vinegar 1 tsp sugar or honey ¼ tsp salt Freshly ground black pepper Leaves from 1 thyme sprig • Cut stems on the bias into ¼-inch slices. Place stems in a small bowl. • Bring vinegar to a boil in a small saucepan. Stir in sugar or honey, salt, pepper and thyme; pour over stems. Let stand at least 20 minutes. Yields ½ cup.

If You Were Exposed to, or Harmed by, ASBESTOS or ASBESTOS-CONTAINING Products Made, Distributed or Sold by THE FLINTKOTE COMPANY or FLINTKOTE MINES LIMITED,

Texas

Please read this Notce of Votng Rights and Hearing to consider whether to approve Reorganizaton. TYPES OF PRODUCTS

SUPPLEMENTAL SETTLEMENT BAR ORDER

During the 1930s to the 1980s, products sold by The Flintkote Company and Flintkote Mines Limited (the “Debtors”) may have contained asbestos. These products could have included foor tile, roofng shingles, joint compound, cement pipe, asphalt and other products.

Under the Plan, ITCAN will also obtain protection from certain claims by a settlement bar order, which is described more particularly in the Plan and Disclosure Supplement.

Persons or entities exposed to, or harmed by, the Debtors’ asbestos or asbestos-containing products may have personal injury, wrongful death or other claims against the Debtors. You do not need to (i) have been diagnosed, (ii) have symptoms, or (iii) be impaired to be affected by the Plan. If you believe you may have been exposed to, or harmed by the Debtors’ products, you may be entitled to vote on the terms of the Reorganization. You should carefully read this notice and the important documents located at http://www.fintkotebankruptcy.com.

PLAN OF REORGANIZATION The Debtors have fled for bankruptcy. On February 9, 2015, the Debtors fled a modifed Joint Plan of Reorganization (the “Plan”) with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware (the “Bankruptcy Court”). The Plan includes the terms of a settlement reached between the Debtors and their former indirect parent company, Imperial Tobacco Canada Limited (“ITCAN”). The Plan has been jointly proposed by the Debtors, the Asbestos Claimants Committee and the Future Claimants Representative (collectively, the “Plan Proponents”). As background, the Plan is a modifed version of a bankruptcy plan on which Debtors previously solicited votes in 2008 and 2009, and which was confrmed by the Bankruptcy Court on December 21, 2012 (the “Original Plan”). A document describing the Plan’s changes (the “Disclosure Supplement”), which the Bankruptcy Court approved on March 17, 2015, and a copy of the Plan itself and voting materials (a “Resolicitation Package”), has been mailed to known holders of claims against the Debtors or their lawyers.

THE TRUST The Plan provides for a trust to be established to pay eligible asbestos personal injury claims against the Debtors (the “Trust”). The Plan states that all current and future holders of asbestos personal injury claims will be forever prohibited from asserting claims directly against the Debtors and other parties protected under the Plan, including ITCAN. Such persons can receive money only from the Trust. The Plan and the Disclosure Supplement have important additional details and are available at http://www.fintkotebankruptcy.com.

VOTING PROCEDURES The Bankruptcy Court has issued an order describing who can vote on the Plan, how to vote, and how votes will be counted. The Disclosure Supplement has information that will help you decide whether and how to vote on the Plan if you are entitled to do so. Votes cast on the Original Plan will be counted as votes on the Plan, unless a holder changes such vote. If you voted on the Original Plan and do not wish to change your vote, you do not need to submit a ballot. If you did not vote on the Original Plan, you may obtain and cast a ballot, which would be subject to the Plan Proponents’ right to object. To be counted, a completed ballot must be received by the Voting Agent at the address below by 4:00 p.m. (prevailing Eastern time) on June 2, 2015. Any ballot received after that deadline will not be counted. Proof of an asbestos personal injury or wrongful death claim does not need to be fled with the Bankruptcy Court. Special procedures have been established for holders of asbestos personal injury and wrongful death claims to vote on the Plan. Lawyers for holders of these claims may vote on the Plan on behalf of their clients if authorized by their client. If you are unsure whether your lawyer is authorized to vote on your behalf, please contact your lawyer.

THE HEARING TO CONFIRM THE PLAN A hearing to confrm the Plan will be held before the Honorable Mary F. Walrath, United States Bankruptcy Judge, at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, 824 Market Street, 5th Floor, Wilmington, Delaware 19801, commencing on August 10, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. (prevailing Eastern time). You may attend the hearing but are not required to do so.

OBJECTING TO THE PLAN Objections to the Plan are limited to changes between the Original Plan and the Plan and must be submitted in writing and received by July 8, 2015 to be considered. All objections must comply with the requirements in the notice of the Confrmation Hearing, available at http://www.fintkotebankruptcy.com.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T from page 10

“Grandma, Your Breath Stinks!” My grandchildren are my pride and joy. One of the charming things about young children is they’re painfully honest. Months ago, when reading a story to my 4-year-old granddaughter, she looked away and said that my breath was “stinky.” I didn’t think much of it until it happened again the next week – and it wasn’t long after I had brushed my teeth. I’ve always kept up with oral hygiene, so bad breath wasn’t something I worried about. I didn’t notice it myself, but I asked my dentist about it soon after. According to him, bad breath is very common in seniors. Like every other kind of health, our oral health declines with age. One of the major problems is that less saliva is produced as we get older, and a number of medications (another fact of getting older) make that problem much worse. Saliva acts as a natural mouth rinse, clearing away bacteria and food particles. When your mouth is dry, bacteria thrive. Leftover food particles feed bacteria and break down, releasing sulfur as bad breath. On top of this, we’ve got dentures, receding gums, oral problems from diabetes and more. It’s no wonder I had bad breath. I’m surprised my granddaughter didn’t say something sooner. In the past, I’ve used plenty of products that I thought would help with bad breath, but I didn’t understand the real problem – so I never sought the right solution. Most ordinary mouthwashes that claim to kill bacteria and give you fresh breath contain alcohol. They temporarily reduce bacteria, but it’s only about an hour before your breath starts to stink again, whether you realize it or not. Even worse, the alcohol dries out your mouth, actually contributing to bad breath. My dentist suggested an alcohol-free mouth-

wash, but it was important to me that I keep my gums healthy to prevent a host of other problems. I did some research, and then tried a few brands. SmartMouth Advanced Clinical Formula offered all of the benefts I was looking for, including a promise of 12 hours of fresh breath every time I rinsed with it. It is alcohol-free, so it doesn’t dry my mouth, but it still works to kill bacteria that cause gingivitis.

RARE TREAT

(From $10 • chocolatebar. com) Endangered Species Chocolate donates 10 percent of profits to organizations that support species conservation, habitat preservation and humanitarian efforts. SMOOTH MOVE

(From $7 • lushusa.com) Smell good while doing good with Lush’s Charity Pot body lotion. All proceeds (minus taxes) are donated to grassroots environmental, animal welfare and human rights organizations. SOFTEN UP

I knew SmartMouth was unique because it was the only mouthwash on the shelf that came in a box, with two bottles inside. You combine the two solutions in one cup right before rinsing; that’s what makes it so much more effective at providing long-lasting fresh breath compared to other mouthwashes. This step “activates” the mouthwash, and the results speak for themselves. My dentist approves of my healthy gums, and my granddaughter lovingly tells me I’m no longer “stinky.” Go to SmartMouth.com for a good explanation of how SmartMouth freshens breath longer than any other mouthwash. If you want fresh breath your family will appreciate, fnd SmartMouth at CVS/ pharmacy, Walmart, Target, Rite Aid and Walgreens – or wherever you shop.

A friend paid our dinner check with a gift card she got from a credit-card company as a bonus after she charged a certain dollar amount. She said the gift card was free, as she doesn’t pay a fee for her credit card. Also, she always pays in full, so she doesn’t incur interest costs. If the gift card was free, who really picked up the check? —Loree Pons, Menifee, Calif.

If the gift card was a surprise to your friend, I think the credit card company treated her to a dinner, and she treated you to one. (She could have used the gift card for two dinners for herself.) But if she knew about a bonus structure ahead of time, she earned the gift card by using that particular credit card instead of a different one. This means she paid for her own dinner and yours, too. Either way, your friend treated you.
