Which Harvey Specter qualities would he like to have? Find out at parade.com /macht

Jane Lynch

SEND QUESTIONS TO PERSONALITY@ PARADE.COM OR P.O. BOX 5001, GRAND CENTRAL STATION, NEW YORK, N.Y. 10163-5001

Q: On Hollywood Game Night, contestants pair with celebrities to compete at pop culture trivia. Were any of the stars standouts? —Pablo G., Aspen A: “Jason Sudeikis was off the charts,” says Jane Lynch, 52, who hosts the new NBC show (premiering July 11). “We know he’s a fast thinker from his work, but his pop culture references are extraordinary.” Is Lynch herself good at trivia? “Oh, I can bring it! You don’t want to play against me.”

AT&T ad: The kids weigh in

Q: I love those AT&T “It’s Not Complicated” commercials. Are they scripted? —Marion A., Bismarck, N.D. A: Beck Bennett, the adult actor, asks loosely scripted questions, but anything goes with the answers. “What you see was what organically came out of the kids’ mouths,” says David

WALTER SCOTT ASKS…

GABRIEL MACHT

The actor, 41, plays lawyer Harvey Specter on the USA series Suits, which returns for a third season July 16.

What makes the show so popular? There’s great writing and a little cliff-hanger each week. I really had no expectations, because with most things I’ve done, I’ve felt like, “People are going to be into this.” And they weren’t. [laughs] But they really are into Suits. Are you at all like Harvey? I don’t wear beautiful Tom Ford suits like he does. He’s arrogant and narcissistic, ic, and I’m way more vulnerable and sensitive. He says things that most people—like me!—just won’t say. If you weren’t acting, what would you be doing? I want ant to direct one day, so that’s my backup. If I wasn’t in the business at all, I’d be out in the woods or guiding white-water rafting tours. I love being in the elements. ts. Why did you go vegetarian five years ago? I had the best Philly cheesesteak sandwich ever, but it made me feel terrible. A friend recommended I read The China Study, and I quit eating meat. I’ve never felt better.

Christopher, chief marketing officer of AT&T Mobility, which worked with ad agency BBDO on the spots. The children are a mix of actors and non-actors. “Sometimes magic happens on the set, other times in the edit room, when you cut the comments together.” View these commercials and vote for your favorite at parade.com/ad. Q: Chris Harrison has been hosting The Bachelor and its spin-offs for 11 years. Does he ever get tired of it? —Bobbi P., Alpine, Tex. A: “It doesn’t get old, because of the people,” says Harrison, 41, who’s appearing on season nine of The Bachelorette (ABC, Mondays). “Everybody who comes through has different stories and baggage. Many have become friends of mine.” Get season five Bachelorette Jillian Harris’s take on the current show each week at parade.com/tv. Chris Harrison and current Bachelorettee Desiree Hartsock

“Visiting kids in hospitals with Lassie influenced what I’ve done over the years,” says Jon Provost, who played Timmy on the TV series. “They didn’t let dogs in hospitals then, but they let Timmy and Lassie in. The kids were transported.” Find out how Provost, 63, has continued working with dogs at parade.com/lassie

Diana Ross

Valisia LeKae

Q: Has Valisia LeKae, who plays Diana Ross in the Broadway hit Motown: The Musical, gotten feedback from the star herself? —Betsy W., Reno A: Not in person, but you could say she’s heard it through the grapevine. LeKae says, “Mr. Gordy [Berry Gordy Jr., the show’s creator and the founder of Motown] said she was crying and laughing in the audience on opening night.” The actress did get a quick hug from the legendary diva when Ross came onstage during the curtain call. “It was a moment of awe.”

America’s Favorite Bear Smokey reflects on becoming a “modern” bear, why he’ll never need a yacht, and how a little jar of honey can go a long way.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? A day fishing in the outdoors, followed by a nap under a shady, towering oak tree, hat over my eyes, no wildfires to worry about. What is your greatest fear? I just got a publicist, and he tells me to make sure that my message doesn’t get lost in today’s climate of media oversaturation. And I really don’t like bees.

When and where were you happiest? Funny story – there’s talk of a “Smokey” movie, so I was in Cannes, taking some meetings during the film festival – 60-foot yachts, parties everywhere, fame and fortune beckoning, and all I could think about was getting back to the outdoors. So there you have it. What do you most dislike about your appearance? I come off as this cuddly, sweet, fuzzy bear – but I have sharp teeth, and big claws – not that I would use them, but if people thought about ending up on the wrong side of them, maybe they’d be less careless in the outdoors. Other than that, I guess I could probably use a new pair of jeans.

Which living person do you admire the most? Those who really embrace the cause of preventing wildfires – you’ll find them clutching a “Golden Smokey Award.” What is the trait you most deplore in others? Callous disregard for our forests and wildlands.

If you were to die and come back as one thing, what would it be? There’s no one I would rather be. But Jack Nicholson comes close. That guy can tell some stories.

What is your greatest extravagance? A friend of mine gave me this amazing jar of honey from Paris – I only open it once a year on my birthday.

What is your most treasured possession? I’d be nothing without my hat.

What is your favorite journey? Spending time in any forest or wildland, anytime, anywhere. Give me some grass beneath my feet, trees above my head and I’m in heaven.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I’m doing that even as we speak. Most people think of me as old school – but I’m catching up with the times. Two years ago, I would have thought the Internet was a way to catch salmon–now I’m working on a MySpace page and a daily blog.

On what occasion do you lie? The only lying I do involves hibernation. Which living person do you most despise? Despise is a strong word – but when it comes to anyone who is careless with fire, let’s just say you don’t want to see me angry – I’m a Black Bear, not a teddy bear, remember? What or who is the greatest love of your life? The amazing wilderness that I am so lucky to call home, followed closely by a “special” lady bear in the Yellowstone area.

What is your most marked characteristic? I always say it’s my fur – but then again, how many bears have a motto? What do you most value in your friends? Honesty. Integrity. And a willingness to share food.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? 60+ years of preventing wildfires, but I’m just getting started.

Who are your heroes in real life? The men and women who put their lives on the line to prevent the spread of wildfires.

Who is your favorite hero of fiction? I know it’s ironic – but I love Goldilocks.

What is it that you most dislike? Wildfires! Boy, these questions are too easy.

READING CORNER

The Curiosity An Arctic research team working on reanimating tiny frozen sea creatures finds a man preserved in an iceberg. Can they bring him back, too? Stephen P. Kiernan’s novel is a marvelous blend of sci-fi, romance, and the tug-of-war between science and ethics. The Shining Girls Lauren Beukes’s latest pits a time-traveling serial killer against the one victim who, in 1989, got away. Creepy, trippy, entirely engrossing. The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls Boys may be boys, but girls—well, their coming-of-age can be more complicated. Anton DiSclafani’s vivid, beautifully written novel explores the consequences for Thea, a headstrong Depressionera teen who is banished to a posh southern school after a family tragedy.

the Package Tour, headlined by the New Kids and featuring Boyz II Men and 98 Degrees. “I was driving my kids home last night, and I heard my 6-year-old in the back going, ‘Jooordan!’ ” coos Jordan Knight, imitating his son imitating any number of excited women. “I get that, too, from my 5-year-old—‘Joooeey!’ ” says McIntyre, who at 40 is the youngest of the group. He shakes his head and laughs. “Nothing keeps you in check like your kids.” Beyond the screaming and the tour’s cheeky name, it really is a virtual Boy-Band-Palooza, a potent blend of music, nostalgia, and sex appeal complete with confetti and coordinated dance moves. The idea was hatched after the New Kids toured with the Backstreet Boys in 2011, packing arenas across North America and selling more than half a million tickets. When the Boston band hit the road again this year, they tapped Boyz II Men (“We love their music,” says Wood) and the reunited 98 Degrees (whose vocalist Nick Lachey shares a manager with them) to make an evening of it for 30- and 40-something fans. “It gives people more for their money,” says Wood. “For us, this is kind of a dream scenario,” says Drew Lachey of 98 Degrees. “You get to tour with the group that basically invented the current boy-band genre.”

First assembled in the mid1980s by New Edition mastermind and producer Maurice Starr (“I wanted to re-create the Osmonds,” he has said, with “soul and good black material”), the New Kids rode the charts for the better part of a decade before calling it quits. Though the band members went their separate ways ( Jonathan Knight, for one, launched a career as a real estate developer), they stayed in touch and in 2008 delighted fans by announcing their reunion. When they played the Today show that year, “fans started lining up two days early,” recalls Today executive producer Don Nash. “Some of them even had their NKOTB sleeping bags from when they were young.” “We’re the best-kept really big secret going right now,” says Wahlberg, wearing a Red Sox cap and stretching out on a sofa in the Celtics’ locker room at the TD Garden in Boston, a few hours before a show. “We are a successful small business. It’s us and our customers. The more satisfied our fans are, the more satisfied we are.” There’s a lot of satisfaction going around. Advance sales for the Package Tour are running at about 80 percent (completed dates were sold out or close to it), with total earnings from ticket sales projected to be more than $43 million; that would give each

New Kid an estimated $3.2 million and their fellow bands somewhat less. (Merchandise sales, for which figures aren’t yet available, will bump up revenue for each group substantially.) The New Kids have also raked in an estimated $3.5 million for each of their five NKOTB cruises. Meanwhile, the band’s album 10 debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard chart when it was released in April, making it their sixth top 10 album. “We’ve reestablished our relationship with our fans,” says Jordan, “and it’s not just nostalgia.”

“We’re excited to record whatever we feel like and not worry about what’s playing on the radio or how a video will be attached to it,” says Nathan Morris. “We just love making music.” ON THEIR FANS: “They range from 7 to 70,” says Nathan. “We have the parents and the kids who listened 20 years ago, and now those kids have kids they’ve passed the music down to.” Above, from left: Shawn Stockman, Wanya Morris, Nathan Morris, and Michael McCary in 1992; McCary left the group in 2003.

Each group on the Package Tour has fans who consider them the soundtrack to their lives. “A lot of guys come up to us and say they’ve had children to our songs,” says Boyz II Men’s Wanya Morris. But the New Kids occupy a singular place in pop culture history. “It wasn’t just about the music; it was the lifestyle,” says Aimee Nadeau, a 37-year-old superfan who used to hang around with her girlfriends outside Wahlberg’s house in Braintree, Mass., and is now director of A&R at Sony (she was a freelance consultant on 10, the first album the band released independently). “They always say, ‘Five brothers and a million sisters,’ and it’s true, because New Kids fans have this bond that’s crazy. We’re so protective of these five guys. We love them so much. And the band builds real relationships with their fans; very few artists in the pop world do that.” Says the New Kids’ manager, Jared Paul, “I’ve seen them give fans the shirts off their backs, literally. Donnie has chartered buses and driven to cities with 50 fans. That has a lot to do with why they keep coming back.” On a typical tour day, the band interacts with hundreds at various VIP concert events. For $999, you can buy the Total Package, which includes a reserved seat inside the security barricade and a meet-and-greet photo op with the guys in their dressing room. As one fan says, “The more you pay, the closer you get.” And some get really, really close. On this evening, the guys are putting in an appearance at a bar inside the TD Garden, which is swarming with women in cocktail attire, enjoying refreshments

Legal Notice

Adults 18 years and Older Could Be Affected by a Class Action Settlement Involving Consumer Reporting A Settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit involving certain reports sold by LexisNexis. If you are 18 years or older, you are probably included in the Settlement because there is likely information about you in the LexisNexis databases. What’s this Case About? The lawsuit claims that LexisNexis prepared and sold Accurint® searches and reports that were “consumer reports” under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (“FCRA”). The lawsuit claims that LexisNexis failed to follow certain FCRA requirements that apply only to “consumer reports.” LexisNexis disagrees that Accurint® reports are “consumer reports.” Both sides have agreed to the Settlement to resolve the case and provide benefits to consumers. Who’s Included? If the databases used to prepare Accurint® brand products at any time between November 14, 2006 and April19, 2013 contained information about you, you are in the Class. The databases contain names and addresses of all U.S. residents who have a credit history, as well as information from many public records such as telephone directories, voter registration records, motor vehicle registrations, and mortgage records.

For more information:

What does the Settlement provide? LexisNexis has agreed to design, implement, and maintain specific, substantial procedures that address the concerns raised in the lawsuit regarding the preparation and sale of Accurint® searches and reports to debt collectors. No money will be paid to Class Members. Your Options If the Court approves the proposed Settlement, then you will be bound by the Court’s decisions – you cannot exclude yourself from the class. You will not be able to sue, or continue to sue, LexisNexis for the limited remedies being resolved by this Settlement. However, you will be able to file a lawsuit on your own to pursue any claims for actual money damages. If you do not like the proposed Settlement, you must object by August 30, 2013, as discussed further at CollectionReportLawsuit.com. The Court will hold a hearing on October 3, 2013 to consider any objections, whether to approve the Settlement, and to award attorneys’ fees and expenses up to $5.5 million. You can appear at the hearing, but you don’t have to. You can hire your own attorney, at your own expense, to appear or speak for you at the hearing. You must let the Court know by August 30, 2013, if you intend to do so.

he tells the woman, referring to Twitter’s mobile video-sharing app. “Do you mind if I do that?” She approves and walks away, finding a group of friends at the other end of the room. “Check Jordan’s Vine! Right now!” she says, flushed. (The evidence lives on in his June 3 post—marked “Ultimate!!”—at twitter.com/jordanknight.) Considering the New Kids were popular long before today’s social media existed, they maintain an impressive presence there now, with more than 1.3 million followers on their Twitter profiles, where they communicate directly with fans. “They’re here on my phone 24 hours a day,” says Jonathan, who adds that he appreciates the adultto-adult interaction: “When our fans were younger, our relationship was driven by lust and hormones.” (“So were we, by the way,” says Wahlberg.) Lust and hormones still play an important role, but so does mutual respect. As the New Kids have gotten older and dealt with events both onstage and off ( Jonathan, who confirmed he was gay in 2011, made headlines in April for walking off a New York City stage mid-show and has talked about his anxiety attacks; Jordan has spoken about struggling with alcoholism in the past), they have been humbled by the extent of their fans’ support. After Wood started an organization called Remember Betty on behalf of his mother, who died of breast cancer in 1999, his supporters helped raise more than $1 million for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. “It’s a beautiful thing,” says Wood, clearly moved. There’s newfound respect from the musical elite as well. At the Boston Strong concert on May 30, benefiting victims of the marathon bombings— organized by New Kids manager Paul after hearing the band’s reaction to the tragedy (which hit close to home for many reasons, including the fact that McIntyre crossed the finish line safely just minutes before the explosions)—they shared a bill with Aerosmith and James Taylor. “I looked over, and there was my brother singing with [Aerosmith’s] Steven Tyler,” says Jonathan. “Really cool.” But it’s always the fans and their support that they return to. “It’s weird calling them ‘fans.’ I know that sounds corny—it’s just that they’re more than fans now,” McIntyre says. “I mean, we love to rock the house, and they love to play their role in that as well. But offstage, it really is a family. There’s just a ton of love.”

hug your favorite New Kid, which is something you never thought you’d do when you were 12.” The hugs are very important, a fact not lost on the New Kids, who are never far from an assortment of hand sanitizers. Over the course of an hour, they give countless embraces, back pats, shoulder rubs, and pecks on (often tear-stained) cheeks. Wahlberg, who is divorced, used to be known for kissing girls onstage, and tonight he pulls an attractive brunette he has met before in for a lip-lock; she then grabs his rear end and squeezes, as Jordan captures the scene on a camera phone. “I was gonna put that on Vine,”

Magical White Owl Ask Marilyn

Watches Over Your Garden

By Marilyn vos Savant

When a friend and I were in Las Vegas, I said that gamblers make a strategic mistake when they set a loss limit and quit when they hit it because they leave at their low point of the day. I think it’s better to stop after you’ve had a run of good cards. My friend thinks the long-term results will be the same no matter when you stop. Who is correct? —Tyler Beck, Vadnais

I think your friend is closer to the truth, but not quite there. The odds are in favor of the gambling house, and over the long haul, one result will be the same: The gambler will lose, regardless of when he or she stops. But a gambler can lower the dollar amount of the loss by setting a daily limit. If you wait longer to quit, you’ll just expose more dollars to the odds and lose more in the end.

True or false: Poison ivy isn’t contagious. True. Poison ivy is caused by contact with the plant’s oil, and while blisters on the skin contain fluid that has inflammatory cells and proteins, “the cells can’t be transmitted to another person,” says Ava Shamban, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at UCLA. But you can “catch” poison ivy if you touch clothing that has brushed against the plant and has oil on it. When working outside, wear long pants, shirts with sleeves, boots, and gloves, and then wash exposed duds in hot water.

NASA was very involved in the personal lives of its original astronauts. How did you handle that? JANE: NASA

implied that we couldn’t do anything that might negatively affect our husbands’ careers. MARILYN: When I was pregnant [in 1965], I hid it for as long as I could because I was afraid NASA wouldn’t let Jim go up. JANE: I remember that. You had tears in your eyes when you told me. … But NASA also took care of us. MARILYN: We always had security with us. They made sure no one bothered us during flights. But we could never go to the doctor for anything emotional. During Apollo 13, I held myself together because I had to. I had four children; Jim’s mother was in a nursing home. I called the staff and said, “Take her television out of the room. That’s her only son.” You put yourself in a shell. You worry about putting everyone else at rest. You light one cigarette and then another.

AMERICAN

STORIES

Space and Time A talk with two of the women behind America’s first astronauts

Why did so many of the original astronauts’ marriages not last? JANE: It

was a big ego trip for the men—women hanging around. Pete and I divorced after 37 years of marriage. Pete told our son he had cheated for 20 years. I was devastated. But it turned out to be the best thing. I’ve been married [to Seymour Dreyfus] for 22 years. When Pete died in that motorcycle accident [in 1999], I attended his funeral. His second wife got a flag, and I did, too. That mattered to me. I was Pete’s wife when he was an astronaut.

Marilyn, Kathleen Quinlan and Tom Hanks played you and Jim in the movie Apollo 13. What did you think of the film? MARILYN: I loved it. Tom stayed with us for a few days. Then Kathleen came. They studied how we interacted with each other. I still get choked up when I watch the movie. My only release back then was going to the bedroom and listening to the crew on the squawk box. JANE: I was with her during that time. You know how wrong it can go.

Above, Marilyn Lovell, with three of her children, watches from Cape Canaveral (then Cape Kennedy) as Jim Lovell launches into space on Apollo 8. Right, Jane Conrad (now Dreyfus) at age 38. Below, Jane (left) and Marilyn in 2007.

LIFE magazine had exclusive magazine rights to cover the astronauts and their families. Was that good or bad? MARILYN: It was great. They protected us from other reporters. JANE: My neighbor told me she heard one of the reporters in the yard say, “Put the microphone close to the window so you can hear her scream when it happens.” I imagine the reporter meant when the craft took off from the moon, or splashed

down. NASA termed these “high-activity” events, the ones that were most nerve-racking. With the book out, what do you want the public to know about you?

We aren’t shallow. We are independent women. JANE: I’m an artist, and I’m writing flash fiction. I’m not trying to brag. There’s just more to us than comes across in the book. MARILYN: And we never called ourselves “astrowives.” MARILYN:

How have you two stayed friends all these years? MARILYN: Whenever we see each other, it’s like we were never apart. Maybe it’s our generation. JANE: Maybe women today don’t need friends like we did. MARILYN: They have colleagues now. Children were our focus. It’s what we did. My granddaughter is working and raising a child. I don’t know how I could have done that. JANE: And she can’t imagine doing what you did.

hen Pete Conrad became the third person to set foot on the moon, his wife, Jane, was glued to the TV back in Houston, awaiting news. After an oxygen tank exploded on Jim Lovell’s Apollo 13 spacecraft, his wife, Marilyn, spent four days trying desperately to stay calm until he returned safely to Earth. Connie Schultz sat down with these two longtime friends, among the brave women included in author Lily Koppel’s new book, The Astronaut Wives Club, to ask them what that period of their lives was really like.
