ADVERTISEMENT When we visited the museum, we idly scanned the walls for a sign of our friend, but nothing. That is, until the turn of the new century, when Dan looked up from his laptop. “Frankie’s in Kansas City.” Frankie, at last, 2,000 miles away, at the NelsonAtkins Museum. Permanent collection. We reminisced about the radiant boy in the dark painting, which is to say we remembered how it felt to fall in love. Just as we’d never again be newlyweds, we’d never behold Frankie, snatched by a midwestern curator who may as well have filched our wedding rings. At the end of yet another decade, I found myself in New York on business. Having read about a Bellows retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I stopped by on my way out of town, just in case. And there he was, his hair straw-colored and cowlicked, his ears large and bright. The sticky-fingered Missourians had granted him a visit to the city of his birth. Thirty-five years had passed. Lulled by the undimmed light in Frankie’s face, I browsed my permanent collection of marriage memories. Unlike Frankie, Dan and I had changed: We’d gathered into our conjoined life much love, friendship, and professional triumph, and we’d lost much: loved ones, last chances, time itself. Can you believe this, Frankie was still saying. I stood there awhile, answering: No. Then I texted my husband. At the Met. Frankie says hi. Imagining Dan’s glee, I shut off the phone and bided a bit longer, trying to see Frankie hard enough to last the rest of my life. november 16, 2014 | 15

Many things can change during the life of a marriage. But some remain exactly the same. By Monica Wood
W
e met Frankie in 1977, at the Portland Museum of Art in Maine on freeadmission Friday. We were newly married, short of cash. Frankie—full name: Frankie, the Organ Boy by George Bellows— appeared to emerge from the shiny gloom of a five-foot canvas. “Whoa,” Dan said. “I know. Isn’t he—? “Yeah. He is.” He looked like somebody we might know from home, a factory town filled with Frankies. Bellows, who in 1907 was immortalizing the street folk of lower Manhattan, had posed this affable organ grinder in a straightback chair more suited to a titan of industry. The good-natured sitter wore a rumpled jacket, his enormous hands jutting from too-short cuffs. How relaxed he seemed in that ludicrous chair, how pleased to be attended to, his eyes wide and lips parted, as if confiding: “Can you believe this?” For days we carried Frankie with us, for we, too, felt pleased in our new life. Of course we’d been lovestruck by the same painting; every moment since “I do” had
been rinsed in serendipity. Junk mail to “Mr. and Mrs.” felt like a pop-the-cork occasion. I worked the night shift in a nursing home; Dan taught prisoners to read. We lived in an apartment that smelled of liver and onions, our neighbor’s favorite meal. Frankie was the first acquaintance we made as a couple in our new city, and we fell hard. One Friday we slipped into the museum and found a lurid seascape hanging in Frankie’s stead. Gawping, we eyed the tsunami of color that appeared to have swallowed our friend. We cased the place room by room. Where had they stashed him, and why? The woman at the information desk explained how the museum regularly rotated its collection. Frankie was probably in storage. “For how long?” “I’m sorry, dear,” she said. “I have no idea.” Weeks passed; months; a year. No Frankie. Every so often we called to advocate for his release. As Frankie languished, Dan and I emerged from the shaded glade of fresh love, blinking into our future: first house, first real jobs, first married-filing-jointly.

of nature, not of modern technology. At this age, their brains are still developing, and evolution has prepared them for living interaction and hands-on playthings to further and complete the process. I call it the “organic imperative,” and it isn’t limited to infancy. Allowing electronic devices to encroach upon the fulfillment of these inborn needs is a risky business at best. (I don’t think even watching DVD’s is a good idea at this age.) A child’s growing intellect might be deflected or harmed. Almost as bad, if the parents are trying to produce a superkid, they should know that these efforts typically fail (or worse, backfire), even if not until later in life.

feet, and then face-planted into the grass. The crowd went silent. Would he get up? Was he hurt? No one moved until the ground crew lifted him into his wheelchair. The grandkids struck up a chorus of “Happy Birthday” to camouflage their anxiety. Finally the sea of uniforms parted. George H.W. Bush had a smile on his face. I grabbed Mother, and we walked toward Dad. She leaned over and gave him a kiss. I followed with a handshake and a hug. “How did it feel?” I asked. “Cold,” he said. “I’m sure proud of you, Dad,” I said. “That was an awesome jump.” Forty-three and the former first lady He pointed to his partner. “Mike congratulating 41 did all the work,” he said. on his “awesome” 90th birthday jump. The scene captured the character of George Bush. He was daring and courageous, always seeking new adventures and new challenges. He was humble and quick to share credit. He deflected attention from himself and refused to brag about his accomplishments. He trusted others and inspired their loyalty. And above all, he found joy in his family and his faith. Nothing made him happier than being surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren in a place where he had so many wonderful memories. After the jump, Dad returned to Walker’s Points to eat, take a nap, and prepare for the 250 family members, friends, and Bush administration alumni attending the birthday party that night. He rewarded himself with a Bloody Mary over lunch. Then he received a call from his friend Arnold Schwarzenegger, the movie star and former governor of California. “Happy birthday,” Arnold said, “to the most badass 90-year-old I know.” I agreed with Arnold’s assessment. George H.W. Bush set an example for many people in many ways. He is determined to live his life to the fullest—to the very end. clad in a custom-fitted black flight suit with a patch that read “41@90.” His preflight routine included a final weather clearance, a harness check, and an interview with my daughter Jenna, a correspondent for the Today show. Even with his jump looming, he was willing to share his time to help his granddaughter. “What’s your birthday wish on your 90th birthday?” Jenna asked. “For happiness for my grandkids,” he replied. “I hope they have the same kind of life I have for 90 years—full of joy.” He did have one more wish: “Make sure the parachute opens.” Family and friends gathered at the landing zone: the lawn of my parents’ church, St. Ann’s, the same place where Dad had landed five years earlier and where his parents had been married 93 years earlier. (As Mother puts it, if the jump did not succeed, at least we wouldn’t have to travel far for the burial.) At about 10:45 a.m., one of the members of the jump team approached me. “Mr. President,” he said, “your father is airborne.” According to his son, A few minutes later, we George H.W. spotted a small speck in the Bush found the greatest sky—the chopper at 6,500 joy in feet. After the helicopter his family. made a circle around the church, we saw several chutes pop open. Two belonged to the video jumpers tasked with chronicling the leap. The other was a large red, white, and blue chute carrying Dad and master jumper Mike Elliott, who was making his third jump with Dad and his 10,227th jump overall. The crowd cheered as the tandem headed our way. “They sure are coming in hot,” my brother Marvin said, with a touch of worry. He was right. The wind had taken the chute off course. Mike corrected with a hard turn in the final descent. Dad slammed into the ground, skidded for a few
President George W. Bush recently spoke to Parade about his book 41: A Portrait of My Father, which details his father’s experiences, including the pain of losing a daughter and the commitment to serving his country in various positions, including congressman, CIA director, vice president, and president. Your book proves that your father is different from the stiff, blue-blooded image that many have of him. He is a blue blood in the sense that he was raised up in the East. But what people don’t realize is that his parents were from the Midwest, so there was inculcated in him some midwestern values. This is a man who worked incredibly hard in anything he did. In this case, he was selling oilfield supplies. As I put in the book, there were no trust funds; there were no guarantees. Your father has been a tremendous risk taker. Where do you think that came from? I think it came from the early experiences. This is a man who at age 17 decides to join the navy and not go to college, against the advice of his father and [Secretary of War] Henry Stimson, for example. He wanted to serve. Then he gets shot down—and by the way, flying off of carriers was very risky—and survives. To me, the rest of the risks that he took in his life were minor compared to that. It appears that your father’s losses made him stronger, but also more understanding of others. That is exactly right. The first big loss, of course, was the loss of a daughter [George and Barbara’s first daughter, Robin Bush, died of leukemia in 1953], and I tried the best I can to explain how emotional that must have been for Mother and Dad. Of course, there was political loss. Dad lost twice for the Senate in Texas and he ended up being president. I lost for Congress when I first ran for office and ended up being president myself. There’s no question that his example helped me, and it should help others.

enjoy the birthday party that she’s planning for that night.” After some thought, I said, “I think he ought to do it.” “Why?” “Because it will make him feel younger.” The truth is that my opinion didn’t matter much. After a parachute jump on his 85th birthday, my father had announced that he would make another jump on his 90th birthday. And George H.W. Bush is a man of his word. A few weeks later, Laura and I arrived for the birthday celebration in Kennebunkport, Maine. The jump logistics were complete, the party was planned, and Mother was now on board. The afternoon before the jump, I sat next to Dad on the porch of his beloved home at Walker’s Point, perched on a rocky outcropping over the Atlantic. I had been painting an ocean scene and was wearing cargo pants stained with oil paint. For a few peaceful minutes, we stared quietly at the sea. “What are you thinking about, Dad?” I asked. “It’s just beautiful,” he said, still looking out at the ocean. It seemed that he had said all that he wanted to say. We sat quietly for a few more minutes. Was he reflecting on the jump? His life? God’s grace? I did not want to interrupt. Then he spoke. “Do those pants come in clean?” I laughed, something I have been doing with my father all my life. His quip was typical. He was not nervous about his jump or his life. He was at peace. And he was sharing his joy with others. The morning of Dad’s birthday, June 12, dawned chilly and gray. There was a modest breeze, about 15 miles per hour. At first, we feared that the clouds might force a change in plans. Fortunately, the veteran paratroopers coordinating the jump, known as the All Veteran Group, determined that the visibility was sufficient. The mission was a go. The crew fired up the Bell 429 helicopter that was parked on the lush green lawn outside the two-story wooden cabin that served as Dad’s office at Walker’s Point. Dad was
rom his distinctive perspective as the son of a U.S. president who also served as president, George W. Bush is uniquely qualified to tell the story of his father’s life, which he did in his new book, 41: A Portrait of My Father. As the author readily admits, his point of view—that of a son who loves and admires his father—is not objective. But it is extraordinary. The result is a multidimensional examination of the entirety of the life of President George H.W. Bush, who is now 90. Here, George W. Bush shares an exclusive book excerpt—the opening chapter called “Beginnings”—with Parade. “I tried to portray that he has a joyful spirit as he ages,” says the former president– turned–author.
In late May 2014, I received a phone call from Jean Becker, my father’s longtime chief of staff. She got straight to the point. “Your dad wants to make a parachute jump on his 90th birthday. What do you think?” About 18 months earlier, Jean had called to review the funeral arrangements for my father. He had spent nearly a month in the hospital with pneumonia, and many feared that this good man was headed toward eternity. He could not walk, and he tired easily. In my phone calls to Dad, he never complained. Self-pity was not in George Bush’s DNA. Now he was hoping to complete another parachute jump—the eighth of his life, counting the one he made after his torpedo bomber was struck by Japanese antiaircraft fire over the Pacific in 1944. “Are you sure this is what he wants?” I asked. “Absolutely,” she said. “What do the doctors say?” “Some say yes, some say no.” George W. Smart strategies for saving on health insurance during open enrollment period
Great rates and safety. In harmony.
super saver: Don’t sign up for a high-deductible plan via your employer—unless you are young, healthy, and wealthy. so-called “consumer-directed” plans may be attractive, but even if your boss kicks in a fixed amount—say, up to $2,000—the high deductible likely means you’ll pay the rest of your health costs, up to a max of around $13,000.

super saver: Don’t autorenew if you purchased Affordable care Act insurance last year. More competition for 2015 means premiums for roughly equal coverage will vary wildly, rising anywhere from 8 to 30 percent. instead, shop on your online state marketplace like you would for airline tickets, and check your eligibility for federal subsidies. Nonprofit insurers may offer the best deals. super saver: Eye your Medicare Advantage plan carefully if you are renewing. Many Advantage providers reserve the option to change their networks and benefits at any time. check the plan’s network, benefits, and approved drugs to be sure your doctors and medicines haven’t vanished—and you won’t end up on the hook for outof-network fees. —Frank Lalli

WALTER SCOTT ASKS...
GILLIAN ANDERSON
The Hannibal star, 46, segues from actress to author with the release of her first novel, the new sci-fi tale A Vision of Fire ($19; Simon and Schuster). Have you always wanted to be a writer? I have. I wouldn’t necessarily have chosen science fiction if it weren’t for [coauthor] Jeff Rovin. I have written in various forms over my life, between poetry, short stories, and adapting a book into a screenplay, but there’s something particular about novels for me. That was always going to be something for my 60s and 70s. What was the inspiration for A Vision of Fire? Jeff and I realized that there were a lot of interests we had in common, including metaphysics, politics, and spirituality. So it was important to us that the book have an element of social consciousness to it. What are your favorite science-fiction books? I don’t read science fiction—I watch science fiction. I love science fiction in film form, so that’s the extent of my knowledge of science fiction. You’d think that I’d know more about it, having spent nine years doing The X-Files, but Jeff is actually the holder of all things science fiction. Are you up for another X-Files movie? There is consistent talk about it, but there isn’t manifestation. It is a wonderful idea, we are all interested in it, but somebody has to push the button.
Email your questions for Walter Scott to personality@parade.com. Q: Is there anywhere the cameras aren’t allowed on Chrisley Knows Best? —Stephanie K., Duarte, Calif. A: Not really. Flamboyant Atlanta businessman Todd Chrisley, 45, says there isn’t anything going on in his 30,000-square-foot mansion that he’s concerned about viewers seeing on the USA Network reality series. The one exception is when he or wife Julie feels the need to discipline one of their three sons or two daughters. “If there’s a situation that calls for me to be with [them] privately, I will say, ‘We need to take a break. I need to remind my children who they belong to,’ ” he says.
Michael Keaton is already generating Oscar buzz for his starring role in The Birdman, playing a washed-up actor who once starred as an iconic superhero. But did you know …
HE TURNED DOWN THE LEAD ROLE IN THE FLY (1986), WHICH LATER WENT TO JEFF GOLDBLUM.
Do Julie Bowen’s children watch her on Modern Family? —Jamie O., Las Vegas A: The Emmy-winning actress, 44, says her kids—Oliver, 7, and twins John and Gustav, 5—don’t watch Modern Family because, she thinks, it hits a little too close to home. They much prefer seeing—and hearing—her as the firefighting aircraft Lil’ Dipper in Disney’s animated Planes: Fire & Rescue, just released on Blu-ray. “They don’t mind seeing me as an animated plane,” she says. “Also, they love the toys.”
HE WAS A STAGEHAND ON MR. ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD (1968).
HE WAS ORIGINALLY CAST AS JACK, THE DOCTOR, IN THE TV SERIES LOST, BUT HE DROPPED OUT WHEN HE DISCOVERED IT WOULD REQUIRE A LONGER COMMITMENT THAN HE ORIGINALLY THOUGHT. BORN IN CORAPOLIS, PA., HE’S A LIFELONG STEELERS FAN.
