The actress, 67, stars opposite Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock’s wife, Alma, in Hitchcock, now in theaters. What was the most surprising thing you learned about Mrs. Hitchcock? I didn’t know how important her role was

in the creation of Hitchcock’s movies. She was very content to take a backseat and not be recognized.

Tip right off the bat. Walk up to the front desk, hand the agent your credit card and a twenty, and say, “This is for you. Whatever you can do for me—late checkout, wine, anything—I appreciate it.” No matter what, be nice. Kindness is the best form of hotel currency. If you really must make a sameday cancellation, here’s a way you could avoid the fee: Call and switch your reservation to next week. Wait a day, then call back and cancel.

THE DUST BOWL Ken Burns’s fascinating four-hour documentary, now on DVD, recounts the near destruction of the Great Plains farmlands—the breadbasket of America—in the 1930s. Through archival material and eyewitness accounts, it shows how drought and poor farming practices turned wheat fields into desert, creating huge dust storms that choked everything in their path. It’s also a remarkable portrait of survival and perseverance, with lessons we can all take to heart today.

Add diced turkey and your favorite bottled stir-fry sauce. Heat and serve with rice.

Veggie Roll-Ups Toss diced leftover turkey with chopped celery, minced shallots, mayonnaise, and a bit of mango chutney. Wrap in a whole wheat flour tortilla, slice, and serve with sweet pickles.

With her hit album Red making her holidays bright, superstar Taylor Swift is looking at love—and fame—from both sides now BY SHAWNA MALCOM | COVER AND OPENING PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANNA WOLF

Need a shirt with my face on it?” Taylor Swift is doing some Saturday afternoon shopping when she spots the tee, a cherry-red number that immediately takes her back to a much simpler time. “That’s from, like, my 2006 tour,” she says, running her fingers over its gently worn cotton. “That’s … awesome.” The 22-year-old superstar loves pretty much everything about this particular Nashville shop, which sells vintage clothing, musical instruments, and a quirkily curated selection of knickknacks out of a house with a wraparound porch where customers can take a break from browsing to sit for a spell. And with Christmas approaching, it seems like a promising place to start looking for presents. “I like to get gifts that remind people I know them,” she says. “[Things] that I have a specific

reason for giving them. I start thinking about it really far in advance.” In the back room, two men’s sweaters catch her eye. “This would be baggy,” Swift says, holding up a cream, cable-knit V-neck—but she doesn’t seem to be shopping for a guy. “I’d wear it kind of off the shoulder.” Who says a girl can’t holiday-gift herself? She certainly deserves it. Swift’s fourth album, Red, is a blockbuster that moved more than 1 million copies its first week, just as her 2010 album, Speak Now, did, making her the first female artist in Nielsen SoundScan history to hit that staggering mark more than once. Released last month, the boldly personal Red earned the six-time Grammy winner some of her best reviews yet, thanks to its lyrical maturity and ambitious forays into everything from earworm pop (“We are Never Ever Getting Back Together”) to U2-esque arena rock (“State of Grace”). Trying to figure out which of Swift’s songs are about which of her relationships has become a pop culture pastime. “When the guessing game starts, it’s really funny,” says the star, who always declines to name names (although Gyllenhaal is widely believed to be Red’s central, fiery inspiration). “It’s like, off to the races! I sit back and laugh and think, ‘They’ll never know.’ ” Speculation aside, Swift’s songs confirm that she has repeatedly felt burned. FRIENDS AND CONFIDANTES With actress Emma Stone, one of six women Swift says she calls whenever something important happens.

According to British musician Ed Sheeran, who cowrote Red’s “Everything Has Changed with Swift, a trampoline was central to the creative process. “We would take breaks in between lines of the song to bounce around and think of more ideas, he recalls. “Afterward she baked an apple pie. It was wicked.

‌

to taking an extended break—although the mere thought turns the volume in her head up to 11. “If I took a break, would I stop writing songs so much? she wonders. Or maybe she’d wind up having even more to write about. Who knows? She doesn’t—not yet. “I have so much to learn about life, she says. “I know nothing compared to what I’m going to know someday.

F

or the most part, Swift has handled her ďŹ rst six years in the spotlight with a preternatural grace. In August, though, she hit a rare public relations speed bump—that Kennedy wedding incident, which she won’t discuss (“It’s been talked about enoughâ€?)—and while she claims she doesn’t read gossip about herself, she’s now all too aware that everyone else does. “I don’t know necessarily how much privacy I’m entitled to,â€? she says when asked about the difďŹ culty of living in the public eye, “but I know I don’t get much of it. At the same time, I asked for this. I could be playing in a coffeehouse—I’d be happy doing that, [but] not as happy, probably. Knowing that people are going to hear the music I make is the most amazing feeling. Knowing that there are dudes waiting outside my house with cameras, hiding in bushes, is a less awesome feeling.â€? No one would accuse Swift, whose parents moved the family from Wyomissing, Pa., to Nashville when she was 14 so she could pursue a music career, of being ungrateful for her success. The loss of privacy, she notes, is “a small price to pay for getting to play stadiums.â€? Still, there are days when she’d rather not deal with all that being Taylor Swift now entails. She travels with one or two security guards at all times because, as she puts it, “I have some crazies that are after me.â€? As a result, she can’t remember the last time she went anywhere by herself. “I have some days where I get frustrated,â€? she admits. “I kind of give myself this pep talk, like, ‘Are you in the mood for lots of social situations and pictures? If the answer’s no, stay inside.’ â€? Sometimes, just hanging at home with a little Chinese food and some crime-solving TV is exactly what she needs. “It’s just like this sense ofâ€?—she exhales deeply—“no one is watching me, no one is asking me anything. It’s calming.â€? Maybe one of these days Swift will get around

LEGAL NOTICE

Current or former owners of homes or other structures containing a plumbing system with Zurn brass crimp (F1807) ďŹ ttings connectors, could get beneďŹ ts from a class action settlement. Para una notiďŹ caciĂłn en EspaĂąol, llamar o visitar nuestro website.

A settlement has been reached with Zurn Pex, Inc. and Zurn Industries LLC (“Zurnâ€?) about allegedly defective brass crimp ďŹ ttings/connectors made of yellow brass manufactured and/or sold by Zurn between 1996 and 2010 (“F1807 Fittingsâ€?). The settlement covers possible ďŹ tting leaks, occlusion (a blockage that reduces water ow) and damage to class members’ property as a result of alleged corrosion of the F1807 Fittings. The United States District Court for the District of Minnesota will hold a hearing to decide whether to give ďŹ nal approval to the settlement, so that the beneďŹ ts can be issued. Those included have legal rights and options, such as submitting a claim for beneďŹ ts or excluding themselves from or objecting to the settlement. More information is in the detailed notice, which is available at www.plumbingďŹ ttingsettlement.com.

WHAT IS THIS ABOUT? The lawsuit makes various claims, including that the F1807 Fittings leak and cause damage to property as a result of corrosion and that related repairs should be covered by warranty. Zurn denies all of the claims and allegations in the lawsuit and maintains that its F1807 Fittings are not defective. The Court has made no determination about the strengths or weaknesses of any of the claims or any of Zurn’s defenses. Instead, the parties have entered into a settlement to end the litigation.

WHO IS INCLUDED? The Court created a Settlement Class covering all persons who own or owned buildings, homes, residences, or any other structures located in the United States that contain F1807 Fittings. Visit the website to read descriptions and see photos of the F1807 Fittings. Insurers or others that have paid claims resulting from corrosion of F1807 Fittings may also qualify for beneďŹ ts under the settlement.

WHAT DOES THE SETTLEMENT PROVIDE? Zurn will fund the settlement in an amount totaling no more than $20 million over a seven year claims period. For those who ďŹ le valid claims, the settlement pays for property damages due to leaks of up to 60% of reasonable documented damage, subject to a cap of $100,000 per leak. The settlement also provides for 60% of re-plumbing costs for structures that have experienced at least two leaks due to documented corrosion of F1807 Fittings, up to a cap of $7,000 per structure (or $100,000 for deďŹ ned large structures,

for which ďŹ ve leaks are required to qualify for re-plumb beneďŹ ts). Details on the re-plumbing process are in the detailed Notice and in the Settlement Agreement, which are available at www.plumbingďŹ ttingsettlement.com. Additionally, Class Members can make a claim for past current or future decreased water ow caused by occlusion from corrosion of one or more F1807 Fittings. Eligible claimants would qualify for remediation (repairs to eliminate the ow differential) up to a cap of $7,000 per structure (or $100,000 for deďŹ ned large structures). If remediation does not restore normal water ow to the system, a re-plumb can be requested, subject to a cap of $7,000 per structure (or $100,000 for deďŹ ned large structures). If such occlusions have already been repaired, Class Members may claim for up to 60% of the repair remediation or re-plumb costs that were incurred, subject to the same overall caps.

HOW DO YOU ASK FOR BENEFITS? To obtain any beneďŹ ts from the settlement you must ďŹ ll out and submit a Claim Form. Claim Forms are available at the website or by calling 877-341-4602. The earliest deadline for submitting a claim is April 1, 2014. The detailed Notice and Settlement Agreement, available at www.plumbingďŹ ttingsettlement.com, describe more fully the beneďŹ ts available under the proposed settlement and how to ďŹ le a claim.

YOUR OTHER OPTIONS. If you do not want to be legally bound by the settlement, you must exclude yourself from the Class by January 29, 2013, or you will not be able to sue Zurn about the legal claims this settlement resolves, ever again. If you exclude yourself, you cannot get any beneďŹ ts from the settlement. If you stay in the Class, you may object to it by January 29, 2013. The detailed notice explains how to exclude yourself or object. The Court will hold a hearing in the case, known as In re Zurn Pex Plumbing Products Liability Litigation, Case No. 0:08cv01958, on February 25, 2013, at 9 am, to consider whether to approve the settlement, and a request by Class Counsel for attorneys’ fees, costs, and expenses of no more than $8.5 million dollars and incentive awards for the Class Representatives of $5,000 to $7,500. Payment of attorneys’ fees and expenses will not reduce the beneďŹ ts to Settlement Class Members. You or your own lawyer, if you have one, may ask to appear and speak at the hearing at your own cost, but you do not have to. For more information, call or go to the website shown below.

It’s time to kick your warmweather moisturizing routine up a notch, says New York and Santa Monica dermatologist Karyn Grossman, M.D. So trade your summer face gel for a lotion or your lotion for a cream. For scaly legs, arms, and feet, Grossman suggests scanning the label for a combination of waterbinding hyaluronic acid and shea butter, which traps moisture in the skin.

During the dry winter months, hair typically doesn’t need washing as often—try using shampoo and conditioner on alternate days only. If your scalp is flaky and itchy, switch to a dandruff formula once or twice weekly. Give overprocessed tresses the winter off by choosing lowlights (which darken small sections of hair) instead of bleaching highlights.

PROTECT YOUR BABY ABY AGAINST WHOOPING OOPI COUGH.

As PARADE reported in October, this year the U.S. is on track to have the highest number of whooping cough cases in more than 50 years. Now an expert panel has recommended that all pregnant women get immunized against the disease, which is often passed from mother to baby and can be fatal in infants. Vaccinating during pregnancy helps moms-to-be pass along the antibodies to their unborn babies, but if a woman can’t or doesn’t get vaccinated during pregnancy, she should do so immediately after giving birth.

Unless you’ll be on skis all day, an SPF 15 facial moisturizer is a great alternative to the 30 you wore in the warmer months, says Doris Day, M.D., clinical assistant professor of dermatology at New York University Medical Center. Just be diligent about application: Cancer-causing UVA rays can pass through car and office windows no matter the weather.

Ask Marilyn By Marilyn vos Savant

My wife doubles or triples the recommended laundry detergent amounts to get more suds. How can I rationally argue that she should use the indicated amount per load? —David Kaffenberger, Spring Valley, Ohio

Ask her this question: Why would any manufacturer direct consumers to use less than the optimal amount? Their laundry might not get clean, and the company would sell less product. That doesn’t make sense! Consider a bubble bath. Do you get any cleaner? No. And your dishes get clean in the dishwasher with few suds, don’t they? Yes. But Americans love suds so much that manufacturers use highfoaming formulas whenever they can. Shampoo is a good example. The froth does nothing but make a mess in

Are raccoons especially smart? I’ve watched them disable a trap and unscrew the cap from a bottle that was in my garbage can. —Lavinia Washington, Los Angeles

Raccoons are smart, all right, but it is the nearly opposable “thumbs” on their front paws that allow them to do all sorts of things that opossums can only dream about. Opossums, by the way, do have opposable toes on their hind paws, which is great for climbing but not a reason for envy. Imagine having to answer the phone with your feet.

the sink that takes time and effort to wash down the drain. These cleansing agents all work differently, of course, but they do have something in common: The suds they produce do not reflect their cleaning action. In fact, using too much detergent can make laundry a bit dingy and stiff. Also, the suds can cause problems with the machine long-term. Some washing machines even have software designed to overcome our tendency to use too much detergent. They sense the excess suds and add extra rinses!

I introduced Clayton to Christopher Reeve’s cinematic version of Superman this summer. “Wow, Grandma,” Clayton said, mesmerized. “Wow.” He experienced only a second of disappointment, when Clark Kent showed up for work at the Daily Planet. “What’s he doing, Grandma?” “He writes for a newspaper,” I said. “Just like Grandma.” Clayton furrowed his brow. “Why would he do that?” Whaaaat? I fanned my face with the remote and hit pause. “Honey,” I said, firmly, “Superman knows that democracy depends on a thriving free press, and that—” Clayton waved his hands in my face. “No, Grandma,” he said. “I mean, why does Superman have to get a job?” Whew. Quick tutorial on the American work ethic. Hit play. Little did I know that, three months later, Superman would throw a hissy fit and quit. “Facts have been replaced by opinions,” Clark Kent ranted in a recent DC Comics issue. “Information has been replaced by
