HURRICANE RELIEF SIBLING ACTS Part history, part memoir, the new book Brothers, by George Howe Colt, weaves entertaining portraits of iconic siblings (including the Van Goghs, the Kelloggs, the Thoreaus, and the Marxes, above) with his own memories of growing up as the second eldest of four boys. A New York Times notable author, Colt elegantly captures the complicated dynamics between brothers that both bind and define them, as well as the evolving relationships between his own brothers as they move into middle age.

KEYS Girl on Fire, Keys’s first new album since 2009, plays to her usual strengths: soulful vocals and classically inspired piano melodies set to pop beats. But it’s also a step forward for the R&B star, who’s now married and the mother of a 2-year-old. The writing is more personal, the performances more powerful; just listen to the intimate “101” and the anthemic “Brand New Me.” “It’s been a while; I’m not who I was before,” Keys sings. And she’s right— she’s better.

HYDE PARK ON HUDSON We know Bill Murray can wisecrack. But can he credibly tackle the role of Franklin Delano Roosevelt? Yes, say critics who’ve applauded Murray’s worldly-wise take on the polio-afflicted president in this historical drama. The film posits that while hosting England’s stuttering King George VI in 1939, FDR brazenly juggled mistresses in plain sight, including his cousin Daisy (played by Laura Linney). Scrupulous history? Probably not. Intriguing entertainment? Definitely. (Rated R)

THE GIVING ISSUE
‘‘ There’s no reason
we can’t put hunger
out of business ‘‘
in America.
In the land of plenty, more than 50 million Americans, including one in five children, don’t always know where their next meal is coming from. That’s unacceptable, says Howard G. Buffett—midwestern farmer, philanthropist, and son of Warren— who is working to strike back against hunger, starting in the breadbasket. PLUS Meet three other individuals, from a seventh grader to a CEO, who are joining the fight to feed America.
WRITTEN by Joe Kita COVER AND INSIDE PHOTOGRAPHS by

f Warren Buffett is the Oracle of Omaha, then his 57-year-old son, Howard—a farmer who works 1,400 acres of corn, soybeans, and wheat in central Illinois—might just be the Donator of Decatur. Through his Howard G. Buffett Foundation, he gives away tens of millions of dollars annually to improve living standards in impoverished communities worldwide. Lately, though, the foundation has also been focusing on the home front, working with Feeding America
on a problem that some might be surprised to find in the world’s richest country—hunger. Recently, Howard took a break from fall harvesting to talk with PARADE about the growing problem of food insecurity in America.
PARADE: How did a billionaire’s son
get interested in farming? HOWARD BUFFETT: I’ve always
loved being outdoors, getting my hands dirty. My parents had a gardener when I was growing up, and he and I would dig in the
dirt together—my mom and dad were definitely not digging with me! When I was 5, he helped me plant some corn in our backyard, and I remember how fascinating it was to watch it grow. Little did I know that 50 years later I’d be

“People are hungry not because there aren’t enough farmers or food, but because they don’t have access to it or can’t afford it,” says Buffett, on his Decatur, Ill., farm.
tractors and big combines. Using GPS, I can plant a mile-long row without deviating more than an inch. The technology in terms of what you can do today versus even five years ago is amazing, so it’s a lot of fun. And the combine is a rolling office for me. My staff will tell you that I’ve had a good day if I’ve called in five new ideas; I drive them crazy. So far this year I’ve had Tony Blair, Eva Longoria, and [Congo conservationist] Emmanuel de Merode ride with me. It’s great because you get people in there and they’re a captive audience. You’ve supported global hunger relief for years; what made you turn your attention to America?
growing corn in a different way. Besides the farm in Illinois, I help my son [Howard W. Buffett] farm 400 acres in Nebraska, and our foundation has 9,200 acres in South Africa, 2,900 in Illinois, and 1,245 in Arizona, where we
do agricultural research. What do you enjoy most about working the fields?
I love big stuff. My mom told me I never had enough Tonka toys when I was growing up. Now I have 400-horsepower
Before, I never understood how difficult things were in this country, and how they were getting worse. In America, hunger is hidden; people are ashamed of it. I was in Tucson at a food distribution [center] and noticed a woman walk in with three kids. She looked around and then walked back out. I later found out it was the first time she had ever asked for help, and she was embarrassed. Last year I attended a Thanksgiving dinner at Harris Elementary School right here in Decatur, where I learned that 92 percent of the kids are on free or reduced-cost lunches. I spoke with some parents who told me that school lunch is the best meal their kids get all day. That shocked me because the school sits in a community that has the largest food-processing facility in the world for corn and the second largest for soybeans; 1,500 to 2,000 train cars roll out of
those plants and through these kids’ neighborhoods every day. The irony of that is unbelievable. In this country, the number of people who are living on the edge, who exist paycheck to paycheck, who have been foreclosed on, has exploded. If you’re choosing between medicine or food, between school supplies for your kids or food, between paying the electric bill or food, those are tough choices—and they happen every day. Yet I have hope, because the single biggest difference between fighting global hunger and fighting hunger in this country is that I don’t believe we can get global hunger down to zero. There will always be conflicts and infrastructure challenges [abroad]. But there’s no reason we cannot put hunger out of business in America. And how are you trying to do that?
In the past year and a half, the foundation has funded three projects with Feeding America [the nation’s largest charity focused on hunger relief at home] that will help us better understand the problem, because we’ve not done a good job of educating people about how significant it is. Map the Meal Gap provides evidence for what hunger actually looks like across America, including how many kids are food insecure and what it would take to feed them. The 2014 Hunger in America study will take that analysis even further. So when I walk up to a congressperson, I can talk about the big picture of hunger in the U.S., but I can also say, “Let me show you what hunger looks like in your DECEMBER 2, 2012 • 9

THE GIVING ISSUE district, and what it would take to meet that gap.” The third program that we’re underwriting is called Invest an Acre [investanacre.org], which is enlisting U.S. farmers to donate the proceeds from one or more acres to feed needy people in their own communities. Do we need to increase food production to solve this problem?
3 FIGHTING HUNGER AT HOME MORE FOLKS WHO ARE
No. Farmers produce more food today than we did five years ago; in five years we’ll produce more. People are hungry not because there aren’t enough farmers or food, but because they don’t have access to it or can’t afford it. There’s also an estimated $3 billion worth of food wasted because farmers either can’t get the labor to harvest it or it doesn’t look perfect enough for store shelves. There are some great programs that collect produce that isn’t acceptable for the supermarket and get it into food banks. That’s next on my list—making that system work better. My mom used to say part of the reason I farm is because I’m a type A personality, and I love task completion. I can pull into an 80acre field and get it done. Food insecurity in America isn’t like that because it’s not black and white, and change doesn’t happen fast. But there’s a story I like to tell about a kid walking down a beach where hundreds of starfish have washed up. An old man asks what he’s doing. The kid says he’s throwing the starfish back so they won’t die. The old man says he can’t possibly save all of them, but the kid picks another one up, throws it in the ocean, and says, “Well, I saved that one.” So there are times with this issue when we must think big, but we also can’t lose sight of the fact that it’s still one person at a time. How can PARADE readers help?
Every community has a food drive, a Meals on Wheels program, a soup kitchen. A couple years ago I visited the soup kitchen—what I call the Good Samaritan Inn—in Decatur. It was old and dark, and it made me uncomfortable, but it helped me underFIGHTING stand that the problem cuts across all GLOBAL sectors of society. The people in these HUNGER, situations are good people; they are TOO people who lost a job, people who got Hunger and malnutrition remain even bigger chalsick and don’t have health care. I told lenges in poor countries the director of the soup kitchen that around the world, but I’d give her 50 percent of her capital many charities—including the Howard G. Buffett drive to build a new facility, but only Foundation, the UN’s if the mayor, the school board, and World Food Program, every city council member served at and Concern Worldwide US—are fighting to make least one meal there. DENISE CERRETA This restaurateur had a wacky idea: Let customers decide what they could pay. Amazingly, it works.
In 2003, Denise Cerreta was working the counter at Smoochy’s, a café she owned in a university neighborhood in Salt Lake City, when a woman came up to pay for her meal. Impulsively, and despite the fact that Cerreta was struggling to pay her own bills, she told the customer to pay whatever she could. The woman didn’t look homeless or poor, but “my parents grew up during the Depression, couldn’t always afford food, and they’d seen many neighbors who didn’t have enough to eat,” says Cerreta, 51. “The customer— everyone, really—was shocked, but as soon as I said it, I knew that this was what I was meant to be doing.” Surprisingly, that moment marked the start of a business turnaround for the restaurant,
which eventually became One World Café —a place where people could pay a suggested price, leave more, leave less, or volunteer to earn a meal. Cerreta’s idea attracted lots of media attention and, with it, new customers. Within two years, she was out of debt and business was booming. In 2006, the café morphed into a nonprofit, the One World Everybody Eats Foundation, which focuses on opening up similar ventures across the United States. (To date, the foundation has directly or indirectly helped launch nearly 30 cafés; you can find a list at oneworldeverybody eatsfoundation.org.) Next year will be the 10th anniversary of Cerreta’s big idea, and she hopes that someday most restaurants will have at least one menu item where customers can decide what to pay. “What these cafés are really building is community,” says Cerreta. “Once you have a sense of that, you’re not going to let your neighbor suffer. And from that point, all sorts of great things can happen.”

JOSHUA WILLIAMS This middle schooler’s foundation has donated 200 tons of food— and he’s just getting started.
When Joshua Williams was 5 years old, his grandmother gave him $20 to spend on whatever he wanted. “My mom and I were in the car on the way to church, and I was thinking about all the fun things I could buy,” he says. But then, while waiting at a red light, he looked out the window and saw a homeless man begging for money. Joshua leaned forward and said he wanted to give the man the $20 so he could get a meal. “I suggested that we go buy the man some food,” says his mom, Claudia McLean. “But Joshua pointed out, ‘What if he doesn’t like what we get him?’ From that moment on, he was pestering me about how we could help more people.” Soon, the family began cooking meals every Saturday to distribute to the homeless. Still, says Joshua, 11, “we only had so much food, and I knew people were still hungry.” In 2007, Joshua and his mom established Joshua’s Heart Foundation (joshuasheart.org),
which has since given away 400,000 pounds of food through a variety of initiatives. But the foundation’s backpack program, which discreetly issues food-filled packs to needy schoolchildren before weekends, is closest to the seventh grader’s heart. “When kids don’t have to worry whether they’ll have dinner that night, they can concentrate better, do better in school,” he says. The program benefits 50 kids in two Miamiarea schools, but Joshua hopes to expand it via corporate donations (Walmart has given $20,000). The foundation now has 700 volunteers, plus a Junior Advisory Board over which he presides. This summer, Joshua was the youngest-ever recipient of the White House’s “Champions of Change” award, honoring Americans who do extraordinary things for their communities. “When I look at the faces of the people we’re helping and see how happy they are, that’s my favorite moment,” he says.

SOLVE MORE PUZZLES BY KEN JENNINGS
When it comes to human papillomavirus (HPV), females are only half the equation. There are 30 to 40 types of HPV that will affect an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females in their lifetime. For most, HPV clears on its own. But, for others who don’t clear certain types, HPV could cause cervical cancer in females and other types of HPV could cause genital warts in both males and females. And there’s no way to predict who will or won’t clear the virus. GARDASIL is the only HPV vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV. In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, and 2 more types that cause 90% of genital warts cases. In boys and young men ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 90% of genital warts cases. GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone, nor will it protect against diseases caused by other HPV types or against diseases not caused by HPV. GARDASIL does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, so it’s important for women to continue routine cervical cancer screenings. GARDASIL does not treat cervical cancer or genital warts. GARDASIL is given as 3 injections over 6 months.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Anyone who is allergic to the ingredients of GARDASIL, including those severely allergic to yeast, should not receive the vaccine. GARDASIL is not for women who are pregnant. The side effects include pain, swelling, itching, bruising, and redness at the injection site, headache, fever, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and fainting. Fainting can happen after getting GARDASIL. Sometimes people who faint can fall and hurt themselves. For this reason, your child’s health care professional may ask your child to sit or lie down for 15 minutes after he or she gets GARDASIL. Some people who faint might shake or become stiff. This may require evaluation or treatment by your child’s health care professional. Only a doctor or health care professional can decide if GARDASIL is right for your child. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088. Please read the Patient Information on the next page and discuss it with your child’s doctor or health care professional.

How much of the known universe is occupied by matter? —K. Key, Moreno Valley, Calif.
Consider the vastness of the cosmos, readers. What portion of its mass is composed of familiar (atomic) matter: (a) 1/1000 percent; (b) 1/100 percent; (c) 1/10 percent; (d) 1 percent; or (e) 5 percent? The answer follows. Surprise: (e). While that’s not much, the portion appears to be a fraction of that because we view the immensity of space in terms of distance. Outer space is thin but not empty. Almost everything else— called “dark” matter and energy because we can’t actually see any of it—is implied by the behavior of gravity. This means that the content of about 95 percent of the universe is inferred with our fertile minds and fevered imaginations.

party, sset up “workstations stations” for each child: a large plastic place m mat, a paper or l ti plate, and a plastic small plastic knife. ■ Divide the icing into bowls and add a couple drops of food
coloring to each: white, green, red, or whatever you choose. Position bowls so all the kids can reach them. (For the older ones, put some colored icing into a freezer-weight Ziploc bag and squeeze the icing into one corner; then cut a tiny hole in that corner so they can “pipe” designs onto cookies.) ■ Set out bowls of decorations: chocolate and rainbow sprinkles, red and green colored sugar, chocolate chips, gumdrops, or small colored candies. ■ Have plenty of plastic cookie cutters on hand (metal ones can be too sharp) and put out parchmentlined cookie sheets.
STEP 3
■ Once the children
arrive, start each one with a round of dough; help them roll it out on a flour-dusted surface to ½-inch thickness. Place cookies 2 inches apart on baking sheets. Bake at 350°F for 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. ■ Give each child a batch and let the decorating begin!

When he was host of MSNBC’s Way Too Early, he was up and at ’em by 3:30 a.m. Now that his duties revolve around the cable channel’s Morning Joe and his new gig as cohost of the 9 o’clock hour of NBC’s Today, Geist, 37, is finally able to hit the snooze button—with a luxuriously late wake-up time of 4:30. “I might even stay up until 10:30 p.m. watching the History channel,” he says. “That’s just the kind of bad boy I am.” A father of two who grew up largely in New Jersey, Geist talks family and Yankee fandom with Erin Hill.
