We have snickerdoodles, rum balls, nut rolls, and sugar cookies to transport us to our youth, back to those toasty kitchens where we gathered every December with our moms and grandmas to bake cookies, the smells of butter and cinnamon perfuming the air. Before there were prepaid gift cards, homemade cookies were what we gave to neighbors and church friends and teachers for the holidays—and, of course, to Santa, along with a glass of milk and a hand-scrawled note. It’s those sorts of treats we had in mind when we asked readers to submit their favorite recipes for PARADE’s 2012 Holiday Cookie Bake-Off. Nearly 200 submissions came in from all over America, and deciding on the best of the bunch proved a challenge. But our panel of cookie-loving editors, using not only taste but ease of preparation and creativity as criteria, narrowed them down to the very best in five categories. The lucky winners each received a KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer, with the highest-scoring recipe earning its entrant a KitchenAid Dual Fuel Double Oven Range. We hope that you’ll try at least one or two of our picks and that you’ll enjoy every bite as much as we did. cup sugar cup peanut butter egg tsp vanilla extract cup crushed peanuts

1. Preheat oven to 325°F. 2. In a large mixing bowl, beat sugar, peanut butter, egg, and vanilla until well blended. 3. Form cookies using a small scoop; place on a parchmentlined baking sheet. Flatten each cookie and make a crisscross pattern with fork tines. Sprinkle with peanuts. 4. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool for 2 minutes on baking sheet. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. PER SERVING: 110 cal, 11g carbs, 4g protein, 7g fat, 10mg chol, 50mg sodium, 1g fiber

Enlist friends to bake several batches of their favorite cookie. Put together a list of all the cookies ahead of time to avoid duplicates. (You don’t want six different kinds of rum balls or gingerbread men; you may have to ask someone to switch.)

Ask bakers to bring multiple copies of their recipe—and to note whether their cookie has any suspected allergens, like peanuts or tree nuts. Also have them bring empty containers so they can take a variety of cookies home.

After guests arrive, set out samples of all the cookies, enough so everyone can taste at least one of each. Serve coffee, tea, hot chocolate, mulled wine, and milk alongside. To mix things up, include some savory snacks like vegetables and dip or cheese and crackers.

The Cake That Stole Xmas Cookies, shmookies! In my household, other holiday desserts reign supreme.

y mom was never a fan of the traditional Christmas cookie. Why spend all that time stirring, kneading, and cutting dough just to bring into the world the same flat-faced angels that were sliding out of Mrs. Hutchinson’s oven? Where was the creativity in that? Keep in mind our house hosted the only nativity scene where the Wise Men mingled with elves in striped pajamas. Instead of cookies, Mom made cheese balls. This was an all-month affair, starting with three weeks of Mom telling everyone she knew that she was going to make cheese balls. She loved everything about them: the shopping, the creaming and folding, and, finally, standing at the counter with cheese goop up to her elbows. By the time she finished molding a cheese ball, it was the size of a small planet. “Quick!” she’d yell. That was the signal for one of us kids to rush over with the Christmas platter. She’d pick up the ball with two hands and plop it down with a satisfied groan while we tried to keep our knees from buckling. Eventually, someone had to slide a cracker into Mom’s masterpiece. Always an awkward moment. We’d gather round the table and stare at the

warming mound inching its way to the edges of the doily. Finally, Mom would look at Dad and say, “Well? Who wants to go ﬁrst?” No matter how gently he slid in that ﬁrst Triscuit, she would sigh. After I had children, I started my own Christmas baking

traditions. I am my mother’s daughter, so I, too, have a tin full of unused cookie cutters. I do make oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, but they’re freeform. Think mini volcanoes, post-lava. The kids love them. Every year, they walk through the door and immediately hoard their own stash, then spend the rest of their visit hurling accusations of greed at each other. So Christmasy. Fortunately, my Christmas Day rum cake saves the day. Technically, it’s not my rum cake. The recipe came from a person who didn’t like me very much, which she mentioned in

December 1996. “You’re way too cheerful, okay?” she said. After I laughed in response, I mistakenly thought she was going to slug me. So embarrassing to duck for no reason. Anyway, I think she started to feel guilty, because the next week she showed up with a rum cake. It was delicious. When I asked for the recipe, she agreed, on one condition. “Just stop with the Smurfette routine,” she said. Deal. I get teary-eyed every time I make the rum cake. This may have something to do with my single-mother days, which is when the rum cake made its debut in our family. When you’re in the thick of raising your kids by yourself, you tend to keep a running list of everything you think you’re doing wrong. I recommend taking a lot of family pictures as evidence to the contrary. Which brings me to the framed photo resting on the windowsill in my kitchen. In the picture (left), my daughter Caitlin stands in a kitchen from another time, another place. It’s Christmas, 1997. She wields a large spoon and the face of the next generation of family bakers as she prepares to glaze the rum cake. Not one angel cookie in sight, but she is smiling.
