t was to be the grandest of holidays, full of children and children’s children, and dreams that came true with the tap-tap-tap of my imaginary wand. Or not. “Mom?” daughter Caitlin said, touching my forehead. “Are you OK?” I was collapsed on our sofa less than an hour after serving Christmas Eve dinner, which is the practice round for our annual Christmas Connie Extravaganza. I may be the only one in this house who calls it that, but I’m in charge, always. “Mom?” Cait said again, this time wiggling my shoulder. “Are you OK?” “Of course, honey,” I said, or I think I said. “I’m just resting,” I added, maybe. I was in a haze of fatigue, I told myself, from so much last-minute gift-wrapping and all that cooking. I’d barely finished stitching our newest grandchild Leo’s Christmas stocking. But this was no ordinary holiday overload. I spent a long, sleepless Christmas Eve in the cold embrace of single-flush porcelain. By 7 a.m., I was standing in front of our tree festooned with dozens of handstitched ornaments as I tried to imagine touching the cold, pimply

skin of the turkey bigger than a Ford Fusion waiting in our fridge. “Question,” I whispered to daughter-in-law Stina, who was propping me up from behind. “How am I going to do this?” “Answer,” she said, freeing one hand to wave over my son. “You’re not. I am making dinner, and you are going to bed.” What? For the first time in more than a year, all of our children and their partners, along with grandkids and extended family, were under one roof for Christmas day. Under our roof—in Cleveland,

done something right, because everyone is helping you out now.” The only thing missing was Clarence, the Angel, Second Class, from Its’ a Wonderful Life. Ten hours later, I felt good enough to return to the living, who were getting on fine without me. Every young adult in the house was doing something: ladling gravy, whipping potatoes, wiping smudges off wine glasses. I sat down at the table and dabbed at my eyes as I watched 5-year-old grandson Clayton smooth every napkin. When he saw me,

he ran to my side. “Happy or sad tears, Grandma?” he asked. This child. “Happy, sweetie,” I said. “Definitely.” I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up at my husband’s smiling face. “Aren’t you glad,” he said, “to know you don’t have to do everything?” I returned his smile, leaned against his arm and patted his hand. “Are you nuts?” I said. Some things a woman in charge never admits, even on the best Christmas ever.

Ohio—where I am the ruler of all things Christmas. Surely, there was some confusion here. I had twenty-odd (a crucial hyphen, I must emphasize) people to feed, place cards to make, party poppers to prop next to plates. Not to mention potatoes to peel, Brussels sprouts to shred, gravy to ruin yet again. I live for this stress. My son, Andy, turned me toward the stairs. “Breathe. We’ll call you when dinner’s ready.” When I started to blubber, Cait’s fiancé, Alex, pulled me aside and said, ever so softly, “You know, we only live once, and then we’re dead. So let’s enjoy this day, just as it is.” He pointed to the kitchen bustling with our kids and their partners. “Look at that. You must have 15 | december 14, 2014

People don’t fear that they are more likely to die of Ebola than heart disease or the flu. Instead, they fear that an epidemic might start on our shores, and if they contract Ebola, they are far more likely to die immediately (heart disease is slow-moving and treatable) and less likely to survive a bout of the illness (the death rate from the flu is far lower). One cannot disparage people who fear Ebola “more than heart disease or the flu” by employing what amounts to a misapplication of grammar, at best. At worst, the analogy is just plain bad logic or an effort to make average Americans look dumb. I can assure you they are not.

Watch, Look & Listen

PHARRELL WILLIAMS

When it comes to learning how to get better at any skill, Williams advises, “Watch yourself and then watch somebody you admire. Find interviews where they’re talking. Take pictures of you standing there and a picture [of] someone else you respect and how they stand. Juxtapose those two things. Look at the body language. Do they posture themselves like you do? Who’s confident? Who’s not? Once you find out you’re not confident, ask yourself why. Continue to be curious.”

Adam’s always the first to say, ‘Man, you get on Twitter and say something that if I said it they’d burn my house down. If you say it, it’s funny.’ ” The Voice has yet to create a breakout star on the level of American Idol’s Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood. But that’s OK, says Stefani. “The show is not about making it,” she says. “It is about this moment and learning.” “The show is not called The Success. You don’t win success— you gotta earn that,” Williams

says. “The first thing I tell my team is, ‘Hey, you’re all going home eventually, even the winner. It’s all a matter of perspective.’” Whenever someone gets eliminated, the coaches know how it feels. “We all as artists, sitting in those chairs, have had people that said no to us along the way,” says Shelton. No matter when a contestant “goes home,” Williams tries to offer one last bit of instruction that has nothing to do with singing and everything to do with life: Seize every opportunity. Be Flexible

ADAM LEVINE

“Aim high,” Levine says, but remain flexible. “You have to flow a little bit. You can’t get hell-bent on there being one path to any one place.” He’s thankful he heeded his own advice. “The Voice would have never been something that was on [my] list. If I had been stupid about my career and been really hell-bent on one way of doing things, had I not taken that risk, my life wouldn’t have been as fulfilling.”

“The lights are on, the cameras are on: Make this your moment,” says Williams—who definitely takes his own advice. “I’m having a great time imparting what I know and paying it forward.”

It was like a renaissance.” Levine is one of The Voice’s four current celebrity coaches who compete against each other by building teams of singers. The contestants then advance—or exit—based on performance evaluations and audience votes. Three ultimately face off in a live grand finale for $100,000 and a recording contract, while the winning coach gets bragging rights. The rewards, though, for both coaches and “kids” (as the contestants are warmly referred to) run much deeper. Seeing these young performers deal with rejection and criticism,

“Rejection, a lot of times, is fuel to something better,” Stefani says. When her band, No Doubt, was recording its 1995 breakthrough album, “Tragic Kingdom,” its record label kept saying they weren’t strong enough. Stefani used the rejection by the label and her breakup with No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal as an opportunity. “That’s when I learned how to write songs,” she says. “No one taught me how to do it. IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT PREMARIN

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF PREMARIN

PREMARIN® (conjugated estrogens tablets, USP) is a prescription medicine that contains a mixture of estrogen hormones. PREMARIN is used after menopause for women to: • Reduce moderate to severe hot flashes. • Treat menopausal changes in and around the vagina. If you use PREMARIN only for the treatment of menopausal changes in and around the vagina, talk to your healthcare provider about whether a topical vaginal product may be better for you. • Help reduce your chances of getting osteoporosis (thin, weak bones). If you use PREMARIN only to prevent osteoporosis due to menopause, talk to your healthcare provider about whether a different treatment or medicine without estrogens might be better for you. PREMARIN should be taken at the lowest dose for the shortest time possible and only for as long as treatment is needed.

Serious but less common side effects include: • Heart attack • High blood pressure • Stroke • High blood sugar • Blood clots • Gallbladder disease • Dementia • Liver problems • Breast cancer • Enlargement of benign tumors • Cancer of the lining of the uterus of the uterus (fibroids) • Severe allergic reaction • Ovarian cancer

What is the most important information I should know about PREMARIN (an estrogen mixture)? • Using estrogen-alone increases your chance of getting cancer of the uterus (womb). Report any unusual vaginal bleeding right away while you are taking PREMARIN because it may be a sign of cancer of the uterus. • Do not use estrogen-alone or estrogens with progestin to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, or dementia (decline in brain function). • Using estrogen-alone may increase your chances of getting strokes or blood clots. • Using estrogen with progestins may increase your chances of getting heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer, or blood clots. • Using estrogen-alone or combined with progestin may increase your chance of getting dementia, based on a study of women aged 65 years or older. • You and your healthcare provider should talk regularly about whether you still need treatment with PREMARIN.

DO NOT TAKE PREMARIN IF YOU: • Have unusual vaginal bleeding. • Currently have or have had certain cancers. Estrogens may increase the chance of getting certain types of cancers, including cancer of the breast or uterus. If you have or have had cancer, talk to your healthcare provider about whether you should use PREMARIN. • Have had a stroke or heart attack. • Currently have or have had blood clots. • Currently have or have had liver problems. • Have been diagnosed with a bleeding disorder. • Are allergic to PREMARIN or any of its ingredients. • Think you may be pregnant or if you are breastfeeding. Tell your healthcare provider: • If you have any unusual vaginal bleeding. • About all your medical problems. Your healthcare provider may need to check you more carefully if you have certain conditions such as asthma (wheezing), epilepsy (seizures), diabetes, migraine, endometriosis, lupus, or problems with your heart, liver, thyroid, kidneys, or if you have high calcium levels in your blood. • About all the medicines, vitamins, and supplements you take. • If you are going to have surgery or will be on bed rest; you may need to stop taking PREMARIN.

Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any of the following warning signs or any other unusual symptoms that concern you: • Severe pains in your chest or • New breast lumps legs, with or without shortness • Unusual vaginal bleeding of breath, weakness, and fatigue • Changes in speech or vision • Sudden, new severe headaches • Swollen lips, tongue, or face Less serious but common side effects include: • Headache • Breast pain • Irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting • Nausea and vomiting

“i’m an ambulance chaser, too.”

• Stomach or abdominal cramps, bloating • Hair loss • Fluid retention • Vaginal yeast infection

These are not all the possible side effects of PREMARIN. For more information, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist. You may report side effects to Pfizer Inc at 1-800-438-1985 or to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088. What can I do to lower my chances of a serious side effect with PREMARIN? • Talk to your healthcare provider regularly about whether you should continue taking PREMARIN. • If you have a uterus, talk to your healthcare provider about whether the addition of a progestin is right for you to reduce the chance of getting cancer of the uterus. • See your healthcare provider right away if you experience vaginal bleeding while taking PREMARIN. • Have a pelvic exam, breast exam, and mammogram (breast X-ray) every year unless your healthcare provider advises you otherwise. HOW OFTEN ARE HOT FLASHES STEALING YOUR MOMENTS? R ARELY?

OCCASIONALLY?

OFTEN?

If it’s more often than you want, PREMARIN, the nation’s #1-prescribed branded oral estrogen therapy,1 could be right for you. PREMARIN® (conjugated estrogens tablets, USP) helps control moderate to severe hot flashes due to menopause. It also helps treat vaginal changes due to menopause and prevent postmenopausal bone loss. It’s been relied on by generations of women and their doctors for over 70 years. That’s a lot of moments. To learn more, visit premarin.com/mysymptoms and then talk to your doctor. PREMARIN is used after menopause to reduce moderate to severe hot flashes; to treat moderate to severe menopausal changes in and around the vagina; and to help reduce the chances of getting osteoporosis (thin, weak bones). If you are using or are considering using PREMARIN only to treat those vaginal changes, consider topical therapies first. If you are using or are considering using PREMARIN only to prevent osteoporosis due to menopause, talk with your healthcare professional about whether a different treatment or medicine without estrogens might be better for you. PREMARIN should be used at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest duration consistent with your treatment goals and risks. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Using estrogen-alone may increase your chance of getting cancer of the uterus (womb). Report any unusual vaginal bleeding right away while you are using PREMARIN. Vaginal bleeding after menopause may be a warning sign of cancer of the uterus (womb). Your healthcare provider should check any unusual vaginal bleeding to find out the cause.

The Man Behind The Voice Get the scoop on John de Mol, the creator of The Voice and Big Brother parade.com/Voice

PREMARIN should not be used if you have unusual vaginal bleeding; have or had cancer; had a stroke or heart attack; have or had blood clots or liver problems; have a bleeding disorder; are allergic to any of its ingredients; or think you may be pregnant. In general, the addition of a progestin is recommended for women with a uterus to reduce the chance of getting cancer of the uterus.

Do not use estrogens, with or without progestins, to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, strokes or dementia (decline in brain function). Using estrogens, with or without progestins, may increase your chance of getting dementia, based on a study of women 65 years of age or older.

Estrogens increase the risk of gallbladder disease. Discontinue estrogen if loss of vision, pancreatitis, or liver problems occur.

Using estrogen-alone may increase your chances of getting strokes or blood clots. Using estrogens with progestins may increase your chances of getting heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer, or blood clots.

The most common (≥5%) side effects are: abdominal pain, asthenia, pain, back pain, headache, flatulence, nausea, depression, insomnia, breast pain, endometrial hyperplasia, leucorrhea, vaginal hemorrhage, and vaginitis.

You and your healthcare provider should talk regularly about whether you still need treatment with PREMARIN.

Please see Important Product Information on the next page.

If you take thyroid medication, consult your healthcare provider as use of estrogens may change the amount needed.

You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

The voice of ice princess Elsa in Disney’s box-office smash Frozen, Idina Menzel, sends her best Holiday Wishes (Warner Bros.).

Harmonies!

Celtic Thunder blends their lovely Irish choral tones on Holiday Symphony (Legacy).

Santa’s bag is overflowing with starstudded holiday music for every kind of fan!

The R&B/soul/funk/disco/pop band Earth, Wind & Fire has been around since 1969, but guess what? The new Holiday (Legacy) marks the group’s first-ever Christmas album. Country music fans can kick back to Darius Rucker’s Home for the Holidays (Universal) or Christmas With Nashville (Big Machine), which features the cast of the TV show Nashville crooning a slate of holiday favorites.

Christmas at Downton Abbey (Warner Bros.) is a collection of festive hymns and classic carols, some performed by cast members of the popular PBS series. The soundtrack to one of the late Robin Williams’ last movies, A Merry Friggin’ Christmas (Lakeshore Records), mixes original film tunes and seasonal songs. Contemporary Christian music fans will recognize Grammy-winning Guy Penrod, whose Christmas (Capitol) features the classic “12 Days of Christmas,” with vocals from his eight children and his wife. The iconic gospel group The Blind Boys of Alabama collaborated with legendary bluesman Taj Mahal for Talkin’ Christmas! (Sony Masterworks), with covers of holiday songs and gospel gems.

The Hit Men, musicians who worked with Elton John, Paul McCartney and other superstars, put their own spin on Christmas with Holiday Hits (Hit Men Music Productions).

DID YOU KNOW? Of the four Beatles, George Harrison is the only one who never wrote and recorded a song specifically about Christmas.

OTT’S

Q

Did the fact that Katherine Heigl was born in Washington, D.C., have anything to do with her interest in coming back to TV in State of Affairs? —Jackie P., Miami

A: The former Grey’s Anatomy star, 36, says she does have a sense of pride from having been born in the nation’s capital, and she loves her hometown. But Heigl also found the idea of playing a CIA analyst especially intriguing. “The opportunity to show this side of the CIA was really compelling, as is playing such an intelligent woman who is a real patriot, who really believes that she can make a difference, help protect her country and help her president do her job,” she says.

About

The veteran, Oscar-winning actor spoke to Parade contributing editor Dotson Rader about celebrating two important milestones this month: the publication of Life Could Be Verse, his 11th book, and his 98th birthday on Dec. 9. Why did you publish Life Could Be Verse? “I wrote these poems at different times throughout my life, and I wanted to see what all the poems together said about my life. It’s a small book, filled with pictures, but it probably tells you more about me than you want to know!” Did you have a specific reader in mind? “I wrote it for my grandchildren, and as a love letter to my wife. We’ve been married for 60 years.” You’ve lived through a lot of good and bad times. When you had your stroke in 1996, you considered suicide. “Humor saved me. A stroke, especially for an actor, is a terrible thing, because if you can’t speak, you can’t act. At first, I thought my life was at an end. But when I put the gun in my mouth, it hit a tooth. Ow! That struck me funny. A toothache was stopping me from committing suicide? And it made me stop. There are even jokes about it: What can an actor do who can’t talk? He waits for the silent

NOAH WYLE He’s back in the swashbuckling role of Flynn Carsen in The Librarians, airing now on TNT. Wyle, 43, knows what he’s doing with a sword. He learned how to wield an épée while attending the Thacher School in Ojai, Calif.

pictures to come back!” When you reflect on your life, what is the most important lesson you’ve learned? “Help other people. [Wife] Anne and I feel like you have to help, even if you don’t have enough yourself. That’s what being a human being means.” Read PARADE’s full interview with Kirk Douglas at Parade.com/douglas

Q: What’s next for my favorite country act, Florida Georgia Line? —Danny D., Biloxi, Miss. A: The hot country team of Brian Kelley, 29, and Tyler Hubbard, 27, is following up their Vocal Duo of the Year win at November’s Country Music Awards with a tour beginning in January for their recent No. 1 album, Anything Goes, with its newest single, “Sun Daze.” But first, they’ll be front and center as hosts of the inaugural live broadcast of the American Country Countdown Awards from Nashville on FOX Monday night, Dec. 15.

He spent his paycheck from the pilot for ER taking a trip to Europe with George Clooney and Eriq La Salle. When they returned, he had to borrow rent money from Clooney. When Wyle started his career, he told his agent “no television”—he only wanted to do films and theater. In the past 25 years, however, he went on to star in ER, Falling Skies and TNT’s Librarian series. Wyle’s least favorite scene on ER was mouth-to-mouth resuscitation of a dog. Because of his Biblical namesake, he collects knickknacks of Noah’s Ark.
