Was there anything you were surprised to learn about Mrs. Mandela? She was in solitary confinement for more than 500 days. I shot those scenes over three days and that alone was tough for me. This is not a fictional story; she actually lived through that. I’m in awe of her.

Was it tough to do Weight Watchers when filming in Africa? I was losing too much, actually. Their food isn’t as A processed as ours, so that made a big difference. I had to lose weight for the role, and then they said I was too thin!

Do you cook often? I have one great meal: My baked tturkey wings taste like they’re fried. They’re so good.

You’re getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this Y yyear. When they told me, I couldn’t believe it. I doublechecked to make sure they called the right person!

If you had to pick acting or singing, which would it be?

I can’t ever stray from music, but I do like that every part of me is being used. I hope I never have to choose.

What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend? I have a W sserious shopping problem. People come up to me in the sstore and I’m like, “Yep, it’s me, take a good look!”

E D A M IN E H T SA U Good news: Americans are making things again, from cars to watches to socks. What’s behind the manufacturing upswing—and what it means for American labor.

outside your local Apple Store may not be for the latest iPhone or iPad—it may be for a new desktop Mac that was assembled in Texas, with components from Illinois and Florida, using equipment produced in Kentucky and Michigan. Besides being “Designed in California,” the computers will be “Made in America.” And while those Macs will represent only a small slice of Apple’s total manufacturing, which remains firmly embedded in Asia, it feels good that such an iconic American company is dipping a toe in back home.

In the 1990s, American manufacturing took a hit. When China opened itself to the world 20 years ago, its labor costs were so low (less than 50 cents an hour) that U.S. companies couldn’t resist moving production there, says Willy Shih, a Harvard Business School professor and the coauthor of Producing Prosperity. “Even if they had to ship all their components overseas and then ship everything back, the savings were huge.” Soon, companies offshored component production as well, until eventually entire supply chains were relocated to China.

20 to 30 percent a year. Fuel prices escalated, too, making it much more expensive to ship products globally. At the same time, as the recession forced many U.S. industries to reorganize, American labor costs and productivity rates became competitive again.

Cheap overseas labor isn’t going away, says Shih, but he still sees hope for domestic manufacturing in sophisticated sectors like the auto, industrial equipment, petro-chemical, and commercial aerospace industries. (Read former labor secretary Robert Reich’s thoughts on how to maximize these opportunities, below.)

Consumer demand could provide a boost, too. In a recent Harris poll of more than 2,000 U.S. consumers, 75 percent said they’d be willing to pay more for American-made products. And according to Joel Joseph, chairman of the Made in the USA Foundation, which funded the survey, the most supportive age group was 18- to 34-year-olds. “This genera-

tion suffered the most unemployment during the recent recession,” he says, “and they’ve put two and two together: Buy foreign-made products, give up U.S. jobs.”

Here, on Labor Day weekend, is a look at some of the hopeful new signs for American manufacturing.

THIS SHEEP MADE YOUR SOCKS This summer in Mount Airy, N.C., performance-sock maker Nester Hosiery debuted a line of Farm to Feet products. Everything in the supply chain—wool, nylon, elastic, wrapping—is made domestically.

Similarly, each pair of blue jeans from the All American Clothing Co. in Arcanum, Ohio, comes with a “traceability number” you can use to track the cotton in your pants back to the U.S. farm where it was grown, the U.S. mill where it was spun, and the U.S. factory where the jeans were cut and sewn.

“Folks want to know more about where their products come from,” says Kelly Nester, president of the hosiery company. “Being transparent helps buyers feel good about their purchases while supporting not just American-made but American-grown products.” Rajeev Batra, Ph.D., a professor at the

American manufacturing isn’t “back,” exactly. Rather, it’s undergone a transformation. The vast assembly operations of the past have given way to high-tech, precision manufacturing, producing sophisticated components like aircraft parts, medical devices, and lab testing equipment.

The good news: This overhaul has increased demand for higher-paid, skilled workers—manufacturing engineers who design and improve high-tech machinery and the systems linking it together; process specialists who oversee operations and improve their efficiency; and technicians who install, monitor, repair, and upgrade the advanced equipment.

Our challenge now is to produce more workers who have these skills. Employers are often reluctant to invest in technical training, fearing workers will cash in on their

skills at another company. Workers typically can’t afford to finance their own training, and the classes offered by technical schools and community colleges are often obsolete, the victim of budget cutbacks.

There is, however, a possibility for a win-win outcome.

More than 12 million students are projected to drop out of high school over the next decade; the millions more with diplomas face bleak job prospects. Many young people (and their parents) still assume that the only gateway to good jobs is a four-year college education. But we can learn from Germany, a world leader in technical training, and offer two-year degrees in manufacturing technology, starting the last year of high school and extending a year beyond. This education reconfiguration could solve two problems at once—and strengthen the economy.

University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, agrees that “transparent manufacturing” is on more people’s minds, especially given reports of factory fires in Bangladesh or abysmal working conditions in China. “ We’re demanding greater corporate responsibility and fair trade.”

MICRO-LABELS SHOW PRIDE OF COMMUNITY LaKishka Raybon worked for nearly a decade on a Detroit autoparts line. Then five years ago she was laid off, and the single mother of three lost her home. But since May 2012 she’s been back on the line, making upscale wristwatches for a start-up called Shinola, which is cultivating backyard pride by stamping Made in Detroit right on the watch.

“I was born and raised here,” says Raybon, 36. “The city has gotten so much negative publicity, but Detroit stands for quality and hard work. To have that stamp on every watch is a reward for me.”

labels” are proliferating. “Made in Arkansas” merchandise is showcased at Walmart stores throughout the company’s home state— and in New York City, the boutique By Brooklyn sells only items made in the borough.

Although the Made in the USA label still has cachet, “consumers are hungry for a sense of community,” says Batra. “Local goods have a distinctive character and an appealing sense of authenticity.”

And it isn’t just local buyers who are interested in micro-labels, says the head of Shinola, Heath Carr.

WE STILL MAKE CARS—INCLUDING FOREIGN ONES For car manufacturers in America, the top is down, the tunes are on, and the speedometer is climbing.

June was the U.S. auto market’s best month in six years, and companies like Ford (which has enjoyed 16 consecutive profitable quarters) and General Motors (which is also profitable again) are feeling the wind in their hair. Ford even recently announced that it will add 1,400 manufacturing jobs at a plant outside Detroit this year.

“During the recession, these companies shed obsolete assets,” explains Shih. “Now, as the economy is picking up and consumers are replacing old vehicles, we’re seeing a lot of growth.”

Meanwhile, the new American car company Tesla, based in Silicon Valley, is stealing market share from Mercedes, BMW, and Audi.

Foreign auto manufacturers are also bringing production stateside.

vice president at the American International Auto Dealers Association, about 55 percent of all light vehicles sold in the U.S. through July were foreign brands— but more than half were built in America. In fact, 10 foreign automakers, from Hyundai to Toyota to Mercedes-Benz, now operate 17 production facilities in the U.S., and together they employ an estimated 500,000 Americans at their factories and dealerships.

A reason for the growth in this “domestic-foreign” market: our competitive manufacturing costs.

Shih points out that in 2011, the average pay rate for U.S. autoworkers was $38 per hour—in line with Japan’s $37 per hour and well below Germany’s $60 per hour.

THE BIG GUYS ARE COMING BACK Beyond Apple putting $100 million into its domestic product line, other companies are investing at home: General Electric says it’s laying out $1 billion for its U.S. appliance business; Walmart has promised to source an additional $50 billion worth of U.S.-made goods in the next 10 years; and Motorola Mobility, which is owned by Google, recently unveiled the first smartphone (Moto X) designed, engineered, and assembled in the U.S. Some critics say these investments are merely drop-inthe-bucket gestures by hugely profitable companies under popular (and, in the case of Apple, presidential) pressure to create American jobs.

Others argue it would be smarter to focus on manufacturing ideas than basic goods. But Shih says that even relatively small steps by these corporations spur innovation that will lead to the next generation of economy-driving products. “The ability to produce things is tied to the ability to innovate.”

Consider the U.S. software industry, often cited as a classic American idea factory. “To lower costs, software companies outsourced relatively mundane codewriting projects to Indian firms,” says Shih. “But over time, those offshore firms developed their own software-engineering capabilities and won more complex work.”

WHEN AMERICANS BUILD IT, CUSTOMERS BELIEVE IN IT Barbara Gervais and Connie Woods have nearly 40 years of combined experience working in the repair clinic at the Zippo Manufacturing Company in Bradford, Pa. As Zippo has backed its lighters with a “forever guarantee” since 1932, Barb and Connie have found themselves repairing lighters that were struck by bullets (and saved lives), chewed by chain saws, and even eaten (and expelled) by a hog.

American companies were once renowned for building things to last. (Remember the Maytag repairman?) But as manufacturing went overseas, quality became harder to control, and that promise disappeared or morphed into the oxymoronic “limited lifetime guarantee” or, worse, the extended service contract.

Greg Booth, Zippo’s president and CEO, believes the upfront cost of the warranty is well worth it. “It is one of the major foundations of our company,” which has grown by 50 percent since 2000. Rather than hurting business by discouraging repeat customers, “it makes a powerful statement that we’re confident about what we make.”

“When Shinola opened our Detroit factory, everyone asked what quantity we were going to produce,” says Carr. “But we said, let’s get quality right first. Years ago, ‘Made in the USA’ meant quite a bit, but over time, we lost some of that luster. Now there’s an opportunity to gain it back.”

The Court has not decided that ConAgra did anything wrong; both sides have agreed to settle to avoid the costs of continuing the lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims the following Alexia frozen potato products were advertised as “natural” or “all natural” when they actually contained the ingredient disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate to retain the color of the potatoes: Sauté Reds, Mashed Potatoes Yukon Gold Potatoes & Sea Salt, Mashed Red Potatoes with Garlic & Parmesan, Waffle Fries, Harvest Sauté, Italian Sauté, Sauté Sweets, and Potato Bites.

Who is included?

You are included if you bought included products in the U.S. between December 6, 2007 and July 10, 2013.

What does the Settlement provide?

People who bought included products are eligible to choose: a cash payment of up to $35, Alexia product vouchers for up to $75, or a combination of cash and vouchers for up to 10 products total.

Your benefits amount will be based on the number of products you purchased.

If the total amount of claims exceeds the available settlement fund, benefits will be reduced proportionally so that all eligible class members benefit.

How do I get benefits?

Claim Forms must be submitted by November 27, 2013 at www.Alexia Settlement.com or by mail or fax.

What are my other options?

If you do nothing, your rights will be affected. If you don’t want benefits from this Settlement and you don’t want to be legally bound by it, you must exclude yourself by November 27, 2013. If you do not opt out or ask to be excluded, you will not be able to sue ConAgra about the claims in this lawsuit. If you ask to be excluded, you can’t get benefits. If you stay in the Settlement, you may object to it in writing by November 27, 2013 or at the hearing below. The detailed notice explains how to exclude yourself or object.

The Court will hold a hearing on December 11, 2013 to consider whether to approve the Settlement and a request for attorneys’ fees and expenses of up to $800,000 of the Settlement Fund. Long weekend grill party? Break out the skewers.

1. Hoisin-Glazed Pork

2. Greek Swordfish

1. Preheat grill for indirect, medium-high heat. (Gas grill: Set one burner to medium-high and leave one burner off. Charcoal grill: Bank all coals to one side.)

2. Whisk ¼ cup hoisin sauce, 1 Tbsp mirin, and ½ Tbsp each soy sauce and rice vinegar.

3. Cut 1¼ lb pork tenderloin into 1-inch cubes. Slice 2 small bunches scallions into 1½-inch lengths.

Thread onto skewers, alternating pork and scallion. Brush with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

4. Cook on cooler side of grill until browned, about 4 minutes. Flip and brush with hoisin mixture. Grill 3 more minutes, then flip again and brush with more sauce. Move skewers to hotter side of grill and cook 2 more minutes, flipping once and brushing generously with more sauce. Top with sesame seeds.

1. Preheat grill for indirect, mediumhigh heat. (See directions at left.)

2. Whisk zest and juice of 1 lemon, ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil, ¹∕³ cup chopped fresh oregano, and 2 minced garlic cloves.

3. Cut 1¼ lb skinned swordfish into 1-inch cubes; toss with marinade and let stand at room temperature 30 minutes (or refrigerate up to 4 hours).

Thread swordfish onto skewers, alternating with red and/or yellow cherry tomatoes (skewer through stem end to prevent bursting). Brush with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

4. Cook on cooler side of grill until edges are just charred and swordfish is cooked through, 8 to 9 minutes, flipping every few minutes. Season with fresh lemon juice.

o his credit, my husband, Sherrod, did not own a When Harry Met Sally wagon wheel coffee table when we married in middle age.

He did, however, bring along his grandfather’s 40-pound physician’s scale. It was passed down to Sherrod’s father, also a small-town family doctor, who used it to weigh patients and his three sons until his retirement in the 1980s. I didn’t even know the thing existed until movers lugged it from Sherrod’s cellar into our basement, where it has remained for the past eight years. It’s five feet tall with rusted hardware and a history of neglect, unless you count the time our cat Winnie coughed up a tumbleweed of a hair ball on it in 2007.

Our kids grown, we are in the process of moving to a smaller house. “Don’t call it downsizing,” my friend Jackie says. “Call it rightsizing.” On my phone, Jackie’s ringtone is Ethel Merman belting out “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.” To give you an idea of her mind-set.

When Sherrod and I decided to move into fewer square feet, I assumed his scale would not be traveling with us.

Upon hearing this theory, my 60-year-old husband gasped.

“It was my father’s,” he said.

“You never use it,” I said.

“As opposed to this,” he said, pointing to my I Love Lucy doll that talks in a loop from the Vitameatavegamin episode.

When we decided to move to a smaller home, I was all about paring down my husband’s belongings. Then we got to my stuff.

impasse because of my husband’s childhood full of meaningful TV documentaries.

Being an elected official, Sherrod is all about listening to his constituents, so I invited three of them—Jackie and our friends Lisa and Mike—over to weigh in, so to speak. Sherrod launched into a Senate floor speech as I stood behind his back, mouthing, “Noooooo.”

“It was my father’s,” he said.

“Ooooooh,” they said.

“It was my grandfather’s, too.”

“Ahhhhh,” they said.

“It’s part … ” He paused and placed his hand on his heart.

“It’s part of my family history.”

“You have to take it,” Jackie said, looking at the ceiling.

“Definitely,” Lisa said, glancing at the floor.

“Absolutely,” Mike said, looking straight at me. Lot of nerve, that guy.

Clearly, I’d forgotten the one useful thing I’d learned before dropping out of law school: Never call witnesses unless you know what they’re going to say.

Traitors, every last one of them.

We move in a few weeks, so our house is filling with boxes.

Gives it a nice Costco warehouse feel, without the free food samples. We vowed to cull, cull, cull. Promised each other, even.

Then we pried open boxes we haven’t looked inside in 20 years.

You know how organizing consultants say, “If you haven’t used it in two years, toss it”?

That works for shoes, maybe, but not for the cards your kids made when they were so little they broke out in hives at the thought of ever leaving you.

“I will merry you,” my little boy wrote under a drawing of me with a groom who barely reaches my kneecaps. “I’m sorry I yelled at you, Mom,” my 10-year-old daughter wrote. “But you have to admit you asked for it.”

This isn’t clutter. It’s my life.

“What’s in all those boxes?”

Sherrod asked, pointing to the mountain of plastic tubs labeled Good to Go. “Things I have to have,” I said, softly.

“Like my doctor’s scale,” he said, just as softly.

This is what happens when you don’t practice what you screech.
