He and brother Robert (who also wrote the songs for Mary Poppins) crafted the catchy ditty that debuted 50 years ago April 22. “We kept it simple,” says Sherman. “The message was, ‘Let’s learn to live together.’ ” For photos of the ride both then and now, go to parade.com/smallworld.

Q: Do the men on Dancing With the Stars wear as much spray tan as the ladies?—Kelly E., Detroit A: “Some of the men do like a spray tan, especially if they’re performing a Latin dance with an open shirt,” says makeup artist Zena Shteysel. “Occasionally we even accentuate their abs using makeup.” The show goes through 20 to 30 gallons of tanning spray in a season, and our own season 18 blogger, Big Time Rush’s James Maslow, 23, admits he’s a bronzer: “I’ll take what I can get!” Read his dishy blog at parade.com/dwts.

Q: How was Disney’s “It’s a Small World” created? —Melinda R., Los Angeles A: Keen to develop new technologies for attractions, Walt Disney teamed with UNICEF to create a ride saluting children of all nations for New York City’s 1964 World’s Fair. Initially, he couldn’t find the right music to pipe into the

LINDA RONSTADT

The Grammy-winning icon, 67, has a new CD, Duets, a compilation of previously recorded favorite tracks.

Last year you revealed that Parkinson’s has left you unable to sing. It’s a movement disorder, and singing is a series of delicate, highly complex movements in your vocal cords. It’s hard to brush my teeth, so you can imagine how hard it would be to sing. Do you miss it? I miss singing tremendously. It was something I could do since I was 2. You sang “Moonlight in Vermont” with Frank Sinatra in 1993. His voice was in decline and I did a lot of improvising. But I was astounded at how much story he could still deliver and how much color was there. As Rosemary Clooney used to say, “Darling, he’s still dangerous.”

The serving sizes on the nutri tion labels for some foods are unrealistically small, espe cially foods high in fat, sugar, or sodium. are the small sizes an effort to minimize those contents? —R. F., Anna, Tex. No. You may be surprised to learn that the FDA requires food producers to consult a table to determine serving sizes. It includes the one that may be the most infamous of all: “Ice cream, ice milk, frozen yogurt, sherbert: ½ cup.” The tables are intended to describe the amounts typically consumed in a serving, but the FDA determined these figures before Americans began eating more fatty, sugary, and salty foods. Notice that we don’t say the serving sizes for vegetables are too small. In short, the discrepancy between the labels and the amounts we eat is our own doing, but our habits have grown so entrenched that we don’t realize it. Remember when ice cream was served in a little paper cup with a lid one pulled off with a tab? Yes, its size was about half a cup. The FDA has proposed assigning some new serving sizes. But the population now has a problem with obesity. Do we really want to make large servings the new normal? That might send the message that people are expected to consume large amounts of these foods at a sitting. It’s not a slam-dunk decision. The new FDA labels are in a 90-day public comment period. Find out how you can weigh in on them at www.fda.gov.

His Message of Hope

I

would like to speak of three simple attitudes: hopefulness, openness to being surprised by God, and living in joy. Hopefulness. The second reading of the Mass presents a dramatic scene: a woman—an image of Mary and the Church—is being pursued by a dragon, the devil, who wants to devour her child. But the scene is not one of death but of life, because God intervenes and saves the child (see Rev. 12:13a, 15–16a). How many difficulties are present in the life of every individual, among >

“I like being around people,” Pope Francis (in February) has said.

our people, in our communities; yet as great as these may seem, God never allows us to be overwhelmed by them. In the face of those moments of discouragement we experience in life, in our efforts to evangelize or to embody our faith as parents within the family, I would like to say forcefully: always know in your heart that God is by your side; he never abandons you! Let us never lose hope! Let us never allow it to die in our hearts! The “dragon,” evil, is present in our history, but it does not have the upper hand. The one with the upper hand is God, and God is our hope! It is true that nowadays, to some extent, everyone, including our young people, feels attracted by the many idols that take the place of God and appear to offer hope: money, success, power, pleasure. Often a growing sense of loneliness and emptiness in the hearts of many people leads them to seek satisfaction in these ephemeral idols. Dear brothers and sisters, let us be lights of hope! Let us maintain a positive outlook on reality. Let us encourage the generosity that is typical of the young and help them to work actively in build-

ing a better world. Young people are a powerful engine for the Church and for society. They do not need material things alone; also and above all, they need to have held up to them those nonmaterial values that are the spiritual heart of a people, the memory of a people. In this shrine, which is part of the memory of Brazil, we can almost read those values: spirituality, generosity, solidarity, perseverance, fraternity, joy; they are values whose deepest root is in the Christian faith. the second attitude: openness to being surprised by God. man or a woman of hope—the great hope that faith gives us—knows that even in the midst of difficulties God acts and surprises us. The history of this shrine is a good example. Three fishermen, after a day of catching no fish, found something unexpected in the waters of the Parnaíba River: an image of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Whoever would have thought that the site of a fruitless fishing expedition would become the place where all Brazilians can feel that they are children of one Mother? God always surprises us, like the new wine in the Gospel. God always saves the best for us. But he asks us to let ourselves be surprised by his love, to accept his surprises. Let us trust God! [When we are] cut off from him, the wine of joy, the wine of hope, runs out. If we draw near to him, if we stay with him, what seems to be cold water, difficulty, sin, is changed into the new wine of friendship with him.

the third attitude: living in joy. Dear friends, if we walk in hope, allowing ourselves to be surprised by the new wine that Jesus offers us, we have joy in our hearts, and we cannot fail to be witnesses of this joy. Christians are joyful; they are never gloomy. God is at our side. We >

have a Mother who always intercedes for the life of her children, for us, as Queen Esther did in the first reading (see Esther 5:3). Jesus has shown us that the face of God is that of a loving Father. Sin and death have been defeated. Christians cannot be pessimists! They do not look like someone in constant mourning. If we are truly in love with Christ and if we sense how much he loves us, our hearts will “light up” with a joy that spreads to everyone around us.

or most of my childhood, we had a Jack-and-Jesus wall in our living room. There they were, John F. Kennedy and Jesus, smiling from the same patch of walnut paneling in a house of Presbyterians. This was in the ’60s, when divisions between Protestants and Catholics in our town still

ran deep. One day, a neighbor lady, in what became her last visit to our home, pointed to the president’s picture and said to my mother, “You know, Janey, he’s Catholic.” My mom didn’t miss a beat. “Yes, I know,” she said. “God loves everyone.” She leaned toward the woman. “Even the bigots.” With his wide-open heart, Pope Francis walks the earth as one of us. This is a startling development. Too often, with power comes isolation. This pope will have none of that. He champions those who need a mighty warrior on their side. I am not Catholic, but this version of faith, steeped in social justice, feels within my reach. James Martin, a Jesuit

In one homily, he encouraged them to imagine themselves at the Jordan River for the baptism of Jesus. “Now,” Pope Francis told them, “speak to Jesus.” My mother would have clapped with delight at the invitation, and jumped right in. She had been talking to him all her life. Three days before she died, she told me she was ready to meet Jesus. As I type, I can imagine her whispering in my ear. “Now, there,” she’d have said about Pope Francis. “There is a man who walks with God.”

Sunday With...

A

nna Quindlen may have a Pulitzer Prize and a résumé full of best sellers, but she’s not above doing some channel-surfing, too. “I’m an inveterate TV watcher and needlepointer— simultaneously,” says the acclaimed author, 61, whose latest novel is Still Life With Bread Crumbs. “There’s so much good writing on television now: True Detective, Justified, The Good Wife, House of Cards.” Quindlen, who lives in New York City with her attorney husband, Gerald Krovatin, a dmits that most of her writing rituals “are designed to allow me not to write: power walking, newspapers, phone calls. But eventually I run out of other things to do.”

What was the first book you remember loving as a child? Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. Jo March wants to be a writer and then becomes one. Enough said.

What’s your perfect Sunday? I cook my husband a hot breakfast, and my kids if they’re around. I’m pretty famous in a small way (among my family) for my eggs Benedict, although now my daughter makes them just as well as I do. I pore over the newspapers on the couch, drink way too much coffee. Gerry and I usually take the dogs for a long walk. I don’t make dinner on Sundays; that’s takeout day around here. Chinese, Thai, pizza—you can get any kind of takeout in New York. I love food that someone else makes for me.

And, reporter in New York in frankly, I was so green that I was

always nervous about my ability to deliver the goods. I dictated a fair number of stories from phone booths on deadline. Boy, does that date me! Bottom line: I more or less loved it all. Do you ever have writer’s block? Some days I fear writing dreadfully, but I do it anyway. I’ve discovered that sometimes writing badly can eventually lead to something better. Not writing at all leads to nothing.

You and your husband have been together since college. What’s your secret? I like to cook and he likes to eat. He likes to watch sports on television, and I like to let him do that while I read. You’ve written a lot about your family in your columns. How do they feel about that? All three of my children are writers of various kinds, so it can’t have been too terrible having a writer mother. Most of my columns about the kids were written before they learned to read, and that’s no accident. As they got older I let them vet anything I was writing about them. They never shut me down, perhaps because I was always editing myself with an eye toward protecting them from unnecessary exposure. Columns come and go. Your kids are forever. april 20, 2012 | 15
