‘The Sound of Music’ is back ! AS CARRIE UNDERWOOD AND STEPHEN MOYER PREPARE TO STAR IN A LIVE BROADCAST ADAPTED FROM THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY SHOW (NBC, DEC. 5, 8 P.M. ET), WE SALUTE THE LASTING LEGACY OF THE VON TRAPP FAMILY.

As would-be nun Maria in NBC’s live event, Carrie Underwood, 30, sports braids and a dirndl. Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont

Q: Do the von Trapps still run a resort in Vermont? —Gail T., Piedmont, Calif. A: They do. After fleeing Austria in 1938, the family bought a farm amid the mountains of Stowe in 1942. By 1950 they had opened the Trapp Family Lodge, a 27-room structure. It was gutted by fire in 1980 but replaced with a 96-room resort. Today it’s overseen by Maria and Georg’s tenth and youngest child, Johannes, now 74, and his son Sam, 41.

WALTER SCOTT ASKS…

STEPHEN MOYER

The British star of HBO’s True Blood, 44, says he jumped at playing Captain von Trapp. Are you a big fan of the movie? It was very much a part of my childhood. But I hope our version will stand out in its own way, rather than being compared. It’s a different beast. And it’s live—anything can happen. I’m thinking about doing a pratfall to prove it’s live. Has Carrie impressed you? She sings the bejesus out of “Lonely Goatherd.” It’s pretty amazing to hear her hit that yodeling.

Will Carrie Underwood have an accent as Maria?

—Lisa K., Annapolis, Md. A: She’s not doing a Teutonic take, but she won’t sound as southern as usual, either. Says executive producer Craig Zadan, “There’s no twang. Not a trace of the country artist.” For more on Carrie’s transformation from Oklahoma native to Austrian lass, go to parade.com/underwood.

Q: Who first played the part of Maria onstage? —Hal S., Philadelphia A: Mary Martin originated the role of the high-spirited governess on Broadway in 1959, at 45. And future Brady Bunch mom Florence Henderson—then 27, now 79, and herself one of

10 siblings—played Maria on the 1961 U.S. tour, a very hot ticket. Henderson later called the gig “a lot of pressure” but she “loved doing the part.” Q: Can I visit the places where they shot the 1965 movie? —Jill K., Atlanta A: It’s been ages since Julie Andrews trilled her iconic “hills are alive” soliloquy on Mellweg Mountain, but companies still offer tours of that spot and others used for the film in and around Salzburg, Austria. Ask Marilyn By Marilyn vos Savant

What determines whether water is hard or soft? Which is safer to drink? —Z.F., Richardson, Tex.

Most water is termed “hard,” which means that it contains a significant amount of minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium, both of which are essential to the human diet. Other vital minerals and trace elements are also found in hard water. In other words, the substances that make water hard are not contaminants. Instead, they are the naturally healthful components of water. Overall, water is commonly rated in five categories (very hard, hard, moderately hard, slightly hard, and soft) by how many grains of minerals per gallon it contains. An example of naturally soft water (with little or no mineral content) is rainwater, but when we speak of water softening, we’re referring to removing the minerals by artificial means.

This process typically makes the water salty to varying degrees and may make it unsuitable for routine drinking or plant watering. Why? The softening process may replace the calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions. So in general, you want to drink hard water (consider the desirability of “mineral water,” which is always quite hard) and wash things—your car, your clothes, the dog—in soft water. Many types of inexpensive kits for testing water hardness are available. ®

Nearly three years ago, Pastor Rick Warren and his congregation began a weight-loss journey. In an exclusive interview, he talks about their success, his personal setbacks, and why he believes healthy living is an essential part of giving. BY MARGY ROCHLIN

“Is there a mountain lion around the corner?” jokes Rick Warren, holding out his phone and pretending to peer cautiously into the distance. darkness of the Santa Ana mountains on a brisk hike a few hours earlier. The jovial pastor, looking trim in a black T-shirt and jeans, wasn’t always such an exercise evangelist. He and this group of six churchgoers are gathered on a Friday morning on the sprawling grounds of Warren’s Saddleback megachurch in Lake Forest, Calif., because they’re all believers in the faith-based, holistic wellness program Warren outlines in his new book, The Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life, out on Tuesday. (The main title refers to the prophet who championed healthy eating.) Each person’s story is different, but the results have changed their lives. One dropped 150 pounds. Another avoided back surgery. And another finally found relief from dramatic mood swings. Four years ago, Warren had an epiphany, and not a heavenly one. He was midway through a mass baptism ceremony, lowering congregants into a pool of water

and lifting them out again, when he realized: Man, we’re all fat. “It wasn’t a very spiritual thought,” he admits. “My second thought was, ‘I’m fat, too, and I’m a terrible example.’ ” His sermon the following Sunday included a confession— he wanted to lose 90 pounds— and a proposal: Let’s all get healthy together. To his surprise, more than half of the 22,000 members of his church pledged to join him on the spot. Warren then reached out to three experts—brain specialist Dr. Daniel Amen, metabolic expert Dr. Mark Hyman, and cardio-thoracic surgeon and TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz. Together they built a healthy lifestyle regimen around their five F’s: faith, food, fitness, focus, and friends. A year after starting the plan, Warren’s congregation had collectively dropped 250,000 pounds. “The plan has led to a complete renewal of my spirit and my mind,” congregant Lynne Rayburn, 62, says. “I’m living a different life.” Over a light lunch of grilled

What Is #GivingSunday? On Black Friday, we shopped. On Small Business Saturday, we supported the mom-and-pop shops that make our downtowns vital and vibrant. And come tomorrow, some 100 million are expected to fuel record sales on Cyber Monday. But today the editors of Parade hope you will take time out to give. This issue marks our third annual celebration of Giving Sunday. Since 2011, Parade readers have opened their wallets to help fund 14,000 meals for the Oregon Food Bank Network, three Operation Homefront lounges in the D.C. metro area, and much more. Beginning on page 16, we feature six more charities worthy of consideration. Tweet @ParadeMagazine (or find us at facebook.com/parademag) and use #GivingSunday to share how you plan to give back this holiday season.

HOW THEY DID IT

“I’D TRIED LOW-CARB, NO-CARB, YOU NAME IT. I WOULD LOSE SOME WEIGHT AND THEN I WOULD GAIN IT RIGHT BACK. ON THE DANIEL PLAN I LOST EIGHT TO 10 POUNDS A MONTH FOR A YEAR AND A HALF.” —Chloe Seals Pounds lost: 150

chicken and squash, Warren sat down with Parade’s Margy Rochlin and, in an inspiring interview, spoke about his passion to help people turn their lives around, the tragic suicide of his son, Matthew, last April at age 27, and the intimate connection between faith, health, and giving more of yourself this holiday season—and beyond. PARADE: What led you to start a health movement through your church? RICK WARREN: I grew up in a churchgoing family, went to a Christian college, two seminaries. Yet I had never heard a single sermon on the importance of staying fit. So I started study-

ing the Bible to learn what God had to say about health. One of the teachings is that God made my body; it is a gift. I’m supposed to take good care of it. Did you feel that leading the Daniel Plan fit under your job description as a minister?

There’s a verse in the Bible that says Jesus went into every village preaching, teaching, and healing. I say that preaching is evangelism; teaching is education; and healing is health care. Jesus didn’t only care about getting people into heaven. He cared about spirit, mind, and body. To me, health care isn’t simply helping the sick get well, but helping the well not get sick. Can you draw a line between wellness and spirituality?

You can’t love if you don’t have the energy to love. If you go home every night and lie on the couch because you’re exhausted because you’re not eating right and your blood pressure is too high, well, how can you make a difference? I’m interested in helping my people be well so they can make a difference. You call the Daniel Plan “the first piece of the puzzle.” Could you elaborate on that?

People say they want to work on their marriages, their careers, or get their finances in shape. If you can get your energy level up by living healthier, then you can say, “Now continued on page 12

I can start working on my marriage. Then I can work on my finances or my career or my parenting.” We’re really starting at a base level. How had your own weight crept up so high?

Pastors are often like doctors. We’ll have 12- to 14-hour days taking care of crisis after crisis after crisis. Dinner was usually fast food in the car. I was not eating slowly, and I was certainly not making wise choices. I had only gained two or three pounds a year since I became the pastor at Saddleback, but I’d been the pastor for 30 years. Many aspects of the Daniel Plan are in other diet and fitness pro-

grams, too. What’s different?

Most people know what to do to get healthy. It’s not rocket science. The problem is that most people have the wrong motivation and therefore don’t stick with it. Why you do something always determines how long you do it. So we give people spiritual motivation. There’s nothing wrong with saying, “I want to live longer.” But why do you want to live longer? We say, “Change your life and change the world.” How does using the church congregation for support factor in?

A lot of diet plans don’t have the community component—the friends component. At Saddleback, our members meet in small groups of six to 10 people every week. What we’ve found is that people who pursue any kind of life change with the help of a group change far faster, and are more likely to stick with it, than people who do it on their own. Can other religious groups who want to make health a priority adapt the Daniel Plan?

The congregation could be a Jewish temple or a Muslim mosque or a Christian church. Most people don’t realize that every weekend, as many as 130 million people go to church. That’s more than a third of the nation. There are 335,000 churches in America. Imagine the potential impact if health became an issue in even a portion of them. Last spring, after the death of your son, you experienced a setback in your personal health goals. What do you say to others who struggle with relapses?

HOW THEY DID IT

“THE COMMUNITY OF THE CHURCH IS WHAT BONDED US. IT WASN’T LIKE GOING TO AN EXERCISE CLASS AT THE GYM WHERE EVERYONE’S THERE FOR THEMSELVES. PEOPLE AT CHURCH ENCOURAGED EACH OTHER. THAT WAS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. —Matt Burstein Pounds lost: 30

When Matthew died, my wife and I went through a period of four months of grief. I didn’t want to exercise. The church would bring us all kinds of great food—far more than we could eat—and I started adding back some of the weight I’d lost. My reaction was to be open about it. When I say, “You know what guys? I just went through the biggest crisis of my life, and I put 20 pounds back on, that actually encourages people. They don’t want to hear about the guy who lost the weight and kept it off forever.

Every holiday when you’ve lost a loved one is going to be painful, particularly the first year—the first Thanksgiving, first birthday, first Christmas. But we have the Lord; we have our church family; we have each other. The other thing is, we’re not hiding our grief. We’re walking through it. You can’t get over grief; you get through it. I have cried every day since Matthew died. That’s not a bad thing. Tears are a sign of love, not weakness. The holidays are a season when many people are used to getting. What’s your advice for putting the focus on giving?

The most famous verse in the Bible [from John 3:16] begins “For God so loved the world that he gave …”. It’s a generosity verse. I say you can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving. If you want to become a loving person, you have to learn to give. You spell love G-I-V-E.

onday used to be Family Night at the Ashcraft home in Prescott, Ariz. But instead of just watching movies or playing board games, Juliann and Andrew taught their four children life lessons like patience, forgiveness, and helping others. One evening, Andrew, 29, who was an elite firefighter with the nearby Granite Mountain Hotshots, talked about selfimprovement. To inspire his kids, who were all under age 7, he handed out white rubber wristbands with “Be Better” inscribed on them. He kept one for himself. “He said he wanted to be the best person he could for his family,” says Juliann, 29, through tears, “and vowed to wear it until the day he died.” Sadly, that day came all too soon. On June 30, Andrew and 18 other Hotshots died in the Yarnell Hill wildfire, the greatest loss of U.S. firefighter life since Sept. 11. The wind-driven, 2,000-degree flames changed direction, trapping them in a canyon. The men had no choice but to try and seal themselves into the fire-resistant shelters they carried with them, lie face down on the ground to pray, and wait it out. But they didn’t make it. Despite his high-tech shelter

Arizona Wildfire Tragedy

A WIDOW’S WISH

The devastating wildfire took firefighter Andrew Ashcraft’s life, but his legacy of unselfish commitment lives on. Here, his wife, Juliann, shares her story of love and loss, and how his memory inspires her and their children to “be better.” BY JOE KITA

and fire-resistant clothing, Andrew perished. Among the personal effects that Juliann received was his “Be Better” band. “It was burned and it was black, but somehow it was totally intact,” says Juliann. “It’s a small miracle.” The citizens near Yarnell are still devastated, but none more so than the girlfriends and widows and 16 children left behind.

“People say every day will get a little easier,” says Juliann, “but in fact, it’s gotten harder. He’s not here for pumpkin-carvingday-with-Dad at school, or for the holidays at home, or to coach the kids’ soccer teams. Just the other day my son came home from school and said the kids told him his daddy’s a zombie now, and was that true? I thought, ‘Oh my God.’ ” At times like these, Juliann

draws strength from Andrew’s example and his “Be Better” bracelet. She had replicas made with “Yarnell 19” on the back and a picture of her husband. All the kids wear them now, as does she. “It really helps with parenting, sometimes, to point to that band and ask, ‘What would Daddy want you to do?’” What Andrew and the other brave men couldn’t do anymore was provide for their families. So Arizona’s leading education organizations established the Prescott Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial Education Fund. The goal is to raise $5 million to cover the education costs through high school for all 16 children of the Hotshots. So far, donations to the fund have reached $15,000. “The emotional part of missing Andrew is the worst,” says Juliann, who tells of discovering a spa-day certificate he had bought her as a gift. “But next to that is the reality of losing our provider and breadwinner. To know that people are working to support the educational needs of my kids and the children of all the other families is truly life-changing.”

The Empowerment Plan

MISSION: Trains homeless women to manufacture self-heating, insulated coats for distribution to shelters; this year, the group will produce about 3,000. BACKSTORY: In Veronika Scott’s hometown of Detroit, 1 in 42 people is homeless. So for a college project, she created a coat that converts into a sleeping bag. Yet when she brought the design to a nearby shelter, one homeless woman pointed out that what they could really use was something to sustain them beyond any frigid Michigan winter: They needed jobs. Says the 24-year old, “We’re

from Nashville are one of them: Joseph and Briggett, who are both hearing-impaired, have four children, the eldest of whom is severely autistic. In 2011, generous Santas provided the Ochoas with dishes, silverware, clothes, towels, sheets, bikes, and even a couch. “It felt like bricks were lifted off our backs,” signed Briggett. “Without the Adopt-a-Family program we would have had a blue Christmas instead of a wonderful one.” HOW YOU CAN HELP:

Healthy Stay

HOW NOT TO BE A GRINCH

Does decking the halls get you down? Here’s how to make the merriment manageable By Stacey Colino

The holidays are supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year. Merry and bright, joy to the world—you know the drill. But for a lot of us, they aren’t magical—they’re just stressful, says Alice Domar, Ph.D., director of the Domar Center for Mind/Body Health in Waltham, Mass. “Many of us feel enormous pressure to be festive,”

she says. Enter the holiday blues. See if any of these feelings are familiar right now: • Holiday events fill you with dread. • You’re annoyed, not charmed, by Christmas carols and holiday decorations. • You feel anxious about finding the perfect gifts. • All the party pictures on Facebook bum you out. • You’re overwhelmed by the shopping and entertaining you have to do. But even if you ticked off all the items on this list, you’re not doomed to spend the season feeling like Scrooge. Try these strategies to feel jollier this month: Stick to your regular routine. As much as

you can, maintain a consistent sleep schedule, exercise regularly, and try not to overeat or drink too much, Domar says. That way, the season feels less high-stakes,

just busier than usual. Practice gratitude. Think about what you’re grateful for and share it, says Christine Carter, Ph.D., a sociologist at the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley. Expressing gratitude can put the brakes on your body’s stress response, allowing you to connect more eas-

ily with other people and making you feel happier. Studies show it can enhance your sense of wellbeing, too. Set reasonable expectations. With presents or decorations, “don’t aim for perfection; it’s guaranteed to bring misery,” Domar says. So what if your centerpiece isn’t Pinterest-worthy?

Start some new traditions. Keep the activities that remind you of the magic of holidays past, but mix it up by creating new rituals, too: Host a potluck, or go sledding with your kids. “If you spread these truly enjoyable interactions out into January,” Carter says, “you can even combat the postholiday blues.”
