Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins

Q: How long did it take Martin Freeman to shoot the three Hobbit movies? —Enrique G., Jersey City

A: Freeman, 42, filmed the Hobbit trilogy (the second installment, The Desolation of Smaug, is in theaters now) over the course of about two and a half years in New Zealand. “You do miss the comforts of home,” says the Englishman. But he can’t complain, given director Peter Jackson’s example: “His work ethic is second to none. He doesn’t appear [to think], ‘Enough already with Middle-Earth.’ ”

Dulé Hill, left, and James Roday

Q: Psych has done over 100 episodes. How do the stars keep it fresh? —Larry L., Santa Barbara, Calif.

A: The key, says James Roday, 37, is his chemistry with costar Dulé Hill, 38. “We’ve spent more time

Everybody says, “You’re just like my mother.” Which is sort of frightening. I think there are a lot of controlling mothers. Are you like Carol? My mother was so uncritical that I guess I decided to be the opposite. How so? Oh, I could just shoot myself sometimes, thinking of the things I’ve said to my daughter. “Are you going to wear that?” “Does that match?” Silly, stupid stuff. What was it like working with Meryl Streep in August: Osage County? I’d love to take half the credit for our coming off as sisters [onscreen]. But that was all Meryl. She found ways to copy me. O O

Oscar winner Emma Thompson invites us into her London home and chats about men, motherhood, and her new role as Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers

BY DOTSON RADER

EMBRACEABLE

EMMA

N A COLD, WET DAY IN NORTH LONDON,

Emma Thompson greets me in bare feet at the door of her redbrick row house. She takes my coat, asks me to leave my shoes in the hall, and leads me into a simply furnished sitting room on the second floor. Looking very blond and youthful in an oversize gray turtleneck and black slacks, she settles back onto a sofa and vigorously pats a cushion, saying, “Sit right here by me.” • Thompson, 54, is currently starring in the terrific new film DECEMBER 15, 2013 | 9

Travers? EMMA THOMPSON:

I found the story wonderful. I thought, “How many roles do 54-year-olds like me get? Please let me do it.” I love the Poppins books, and I love the [1964] film.

Really? That wasn’t a wig?

No, it was my hair! It was a nightmare. People would bleat in the streets as I went by. I didn’t have sex for six months! Travers’s personal story is touching. She seems to have been very unhappy.

Dead Again

“A wildly thrilling time. My husband [costar-director Kenneth Branagh] and I had a little house [in L.A.] with a pool. We had to be slender and we weren’t naturally slender, so I remember making diet food.”

I don’t think she ever found lasting hap-piness. She was in pain all her life. Itt often happens, of course, that peoplee n who had traumatized childhoods turn into very good children’s authors. The love for an absent father is also a theme in the movie.

Absolutely. And it’s so moving. An awful lot of people have experienced absence or abandonment. My father died at 53, which was terribly difficult to accept. It’s a part of our lives, but we don’t have many films about that. Instead we like to make films that celebrate a romantic ideal.

The Harry Potter films “I had great fun doing Sybill. The genius of that costume—the wig and the glasses—I mean, Barack Obama could have played her. I did a silly voice, but really it was that costume.”

Many of your movies touch on love: love e discovered, love lost, love unrequited. Why is that?

Partly because it’s one of the major areass in which women are allowed to takee part. It’s not as if I’ve got the same kind of choices as Brad Pitt in filmmaking. But also because love is the only thing that matters. Not just romantic love— the Greeks had at least five words for different kinds of love. There’s affection, Eros, family love ... It’s exactly what we’re designed to do.

In Saving Mr. Banks, she comes off as prickly and unglamorous.

When you were at Cambridge, you became a feminist. I don’t mean that in a negative sense.

Travers herself said that women’s lives

No, it’s not a negative word.

Which of Emma’s costars told her he didn’t know how to act? Find out at parade.com/thompson.

EMMA SHARES SOME FAVORITE MOVIE MEMORIES

But at the root of it seems to be an examination of the relationship between men and women. What led you to that?

It’s a good question. Taking it back a little, if we assume—correctly, I think— that things like abandonment … For instance, my mother was a child of the Second World War; she was evacuated at the age of 7, after which she didn’t see her parents much. Her father left the family when she was 12, and she assumed it was something to do with her mother and that women were perhaps not as interesting as men. She would say that now. How much of that did I ingest? That sense of having to be as terribly interesting as I could possibly be? My mother did have a wonderful relationship with my father, and I think I idealized that to a degree. Your first marriage, to Kenneth Branagh, ended in divorce, and you wrote in your published diaries about your depression and anger.

I don’t feel anger or depression about it now. I think we place a lot of pressure on ourselves and our relationships. We have this romantic idealism that we should all really have a little think about. We want things to last forever, and we’re very keen on the notion of betrayal, which is a strong word to use. Yes, it was very painful, but it was also something that happens between people a lot. Sometimes things go wrong and it doesn’t last, and that seems to me perfectly reasonable. From your diaries, it sounds like that was a very difficult time for you.

Last Chance Harvey

“Dustin Hoffman and I had worked on Stranger Than Fiction, and I sent this to him and said, ‘Let’s do it.’ You absolutely believe that these two people who have disappointment and sadness in them find something in each other.”

I was unhappy. I was not very well, actually. But I wrote Sense and Sensibility, and as we shot, I started to come alive again. And then Greg [Wise] rescued me out of that depression in many ways. Was it love at first sight with Greg?

No, not at all. You want that, don’t you? Sorry. It’s wonderful when it happens.

Oh, it does happen. But I wasn’t really up for it. With love at first sight you’ve got to be quite whole in yourself. When you began making movies, were you pressured to be glamorous?

Not really. I was so fierce. I marched

tend to divide into three parts: nymph, mother, and crone. And that you look forward to [being a] crone because that’s when you’ve acceded to wisdom but still have enough energy to get about. I’m still in the mother bit, but when Travers went to Disneyland, she was in her 60s, in the crone stage. I had to have my hair permed for the movie.

Saving Mr. Banks, based on Walt Disney’s campaign to convince P. L. Travers, author of the Mary Poppins books, to let him make a musical about her magical governess creation. In 1961, in need of money, Travers (Thompson) agrees to go to Los Angeles to meet with Disney (Tom Hanks) and the film’s creative team, but she’s highly skeptical about almost everything they propose and insists on tape-recording their conversations. Meanwhile, flashbacks to her tumultuous childhood in Australia and the death of her father show how her worldview was shaped. Saving Mr. Banks marks the first onscreen pairing of Oscar winners Hanks and Thompson, though “for a long time we’d looked for something to do together,” says the actress. After reading the script, “I rang Tom and said, ‘This is great, because it’s not a romance. It’s about a battle that they both win and lose. It’s perfect.’ ” As we cover a host of topics over the course of the afternoon, both Thompson’s 14-year-old daughter, Gaia (with her actor husband Greg Wise, 47, whom she met while filming Sense and Sensibility), and her 81-year-old actress mother, Phyllida Law, pop in and out; Law, who lives across the road, brings in bottles of milk from the front stoop to the big cluttered kitchen. There is wine and gossip and laughter, and Thompson thoughtfully answers every question.

Kind of hard work, if you’re going to have accessories. A lot of Hollywood films celebrate values that are everything you’re opposed to.

You’re right. I try to not do those films. You have to understand the effect a movie has. The films I’ve made for children have been my hardest work, my best, because kids deserve the best. Guiding Light A Georgia group is helping foster teens take back their lives By Barry Yeoman

T

he smile that enlivens Gi’Nia Stone’s face seems nothing short of miraculous. For much of her early childhood, Stone had little to smile about, as she and her brother contended with their mother’s rage and abuse. When Stone was 6, a caseworker removed the two children from the family’s Georgia trailer, and Stone spent most of her remaining youth shuttling between some 20 foster homes. The statistics for foster kids like Stone—about 400,000 nationwide—can be grim. Studies show the youth who age out of the system face an increased risk of unemployment and incarceration. (In many states, they’re typically forced out on their 18th birthdays.) According to a national survey, 25 percent of these former foster kids experience homelessness. As a survival mechanism, foster teens often retreat into themselves. “I said, ‘I refuse to be hurt by anyone else,’ ” recalls Stone. “ ‘I’ll live in this bubble and it’s where I shall remain.’ ” Then, in 2010, when Stone was 17, she heard about the

ROLE MODELS Sam Bracken (above) shares his story with teens in his program; graduate Gi’Nia Stone now represents foster kids in the Georgia governor’s office.

Orange Duffel Bag Initiative (ODBI), a new life-coaching program for at-risk teens. Cofounded by Sam Bracken, a successful businessman who was once homeless himself (and carried his possessions in an orange duffel bag), ODBI had an ambitious curriculum. Encourage the youngsters to dream. Help them develop strategies to achieve their dreams, down to the nitty-gritty of researching college scholarships. Don’t

sugarcoat the obstacles they’ll face. Surround them with adult advocates, including community volunteers. Create space for them to tell their stories. Then reward their work with a duffel containing a laptop. Over seven weeks, ODBI’s certified life and executive coaches guided Stone as she developed a plan to become a pediatric neurosurgeon. They also helped her and the 24 other participants confront their childhood traumas. By the program’s end, Stone felt she had the skills and confidence she needed to attend Agnes Scott College. And soon after that inaugural class graduated, civic leaders began to take notice of this innovative model for reaching some of the nation’s most vulnerable kids.

B

racken, today’s guest speaker, is fielding questions from two dozen teens in a cafeteria at Atlanta Technical College. “How do you keep going,”

asks one young woman, “when bad stuff just keeps coming up?” “Great question,” says the 290-pound former college football player, whose voice cracks with emotion as he talks. “You always have trials. What allows you to go through anything in the short term is a long-term vision that you’re excited about, something that leverages your passion, your talent, your love.” He should know. Growing up in Las Vegas, Bracken was beaten and abused. His drug-addled mom, the “den mother” for a motorcycle gang, threw him out at 15. A handful of adults—including Bracken’s doctor, a football coach, and members of his church—took him under their wings, offering friendship and advice. Bracken attended Georgia Tech on an athletic scholarship and eventually became an executive at a consulting firm. Hoping that his life experiences could help others, Bracken teamed with author Echo Garrett to write My Orange Duffel Bag, an illustrated memoir and self-help manual organized around principles such as gratitude, meaning, and choice. It was published just before Bracken and Garrett launched their coaching progr ra three years ago. The gram c course, now 12 weeks long, has g graduated 300 Georgia teens i four cities. e’s been a rapper, a model, an actor, and a producer, but Mark Wahlberg, 42, earned “IT WAS a new title in 2013: high COOL BEING THE YOUNGEST school graduate. The Boston IN A BIG FAMILY. native, who calls dropping out UNTIL I STARTED in ninth grade “one of my GETTING BEAT UP A LOT!” biggest regrets,” got his diploma over the summer. “I didn’t want my kids saying, ‘You didn’t finish school—why do we need to?’ ” he says. Hitting the books was no easy feat for a guy who starred in four movies in the past year, including Lone Survivor (in theaters Dec. 25), based on a tragic Navy SEAL mission in Afghanistan in 2005. Wahlberg—who lives in L.A. with his wife, Rhea, and their four children, ages 3 to 10—tells Erin Hill what sustains and motivates him.

biggest takeaways from filming Lone Survivor? It takes a very special individual to become a SEAL. I felt it was so important to give the guys who never came down off that mountain their due. My wife couldn’t talk for 45 minutes after she saw the movie. All she kept thinking about were the sons and fathers and mothers and daughters out there fighting for our freedom. You take it for granted. Audiences will see another side of you when the reality series Wahlburgers, about your family’s Boston burger

Faith is obviously a big part of your life. It’s the most important part of my life. I don’t try to push it on anybody and I don’t try to hide it. What would people be surprised to know about you? My sons and I thoroughly enjoy Legos. We go to the toy store every week for more. I never want to take what we build apart; I want to put it on a shelf. My wife is starting to get a little annoyed with the Legos lying around.

It’s compelling because we’re building a business with family, which is not easy to do. My mom kind of runs it with my brother Paul, and Donnie and I are trying to expand. Expect a lot of laughs and arguments from a bunch of Irish Catholics! What makes Boston so special to you? It’s a great blue-collar town. Just

look at what happened with the marathon bombings and how people rallied together. When I was watching the World Series, I told my wife and kids how important it was for the city, how much it would mean to people. How do you spend Sundays? If the kids are good, I’ll have doughnuts for them at 6:30 in the morning, and I’ll say, “You guys gotta let Mommy sleep in!”

Entourage fans are excited that the movie is happening. I’m thrilled. We’ll be shooting in L.A. in April. Who’s in your entourage now? My wife, the kids, and a wonderful nanny. When I’m filming, all the guys are with me; but if I’m not at work, I’m with my family. Did you feel you had a lot to prove early in your career? Certainly. I don’t think it was customary for people from a music background to be accepted in film in a serious way. Considering what I had to overcome, I’ve had plenty to motivate me. Even more so today—I’m passionate about what I do. I’m a little older, but I’m not getting lazy!

I’ll go to church at 7:30 and everybody will be eating breakfast when I come home. Then we’ll go to church again at 10:30, if things aren’t too hectic. Or if one of the kids has a game we’ll watch them play. It’s a nice family day.

WHAT’S IN YOUR FAMILY DNA?

When 46-year-old Efrat Roman went in for a breast MRI at age 40, the results confirmed her worst fears: She had cancer. She wasn’t surprised. Roman’s mother, grandmother, and several great-aunts had also had the disease. Knowing it ran in her family prompted Roman

on your risk of acquiring countless conditions—from cancer to heart disease to diabetes,” says David Harrison, M.D., U.S. medical director for Best Doctors, a global health company based in Boston. This time of year offers a great opportunity to create a history. “When you get together with family, you relive memories, making it easy to ask about health issues,” says Kathryn Teng, M.D., director of the Center for Personalized Healthcare at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Immediate family members like your parents and siblings are a good place to start. “This will get you 90 percent of the way,” Harrison says, adding that in most situations, it’s not

to be proactive about screenings. “I believe more knowledge is power,” says Roman, now a cancer survivor. Sometimes, though, your family history isn’t so obvious. That’s what Karen Diaz, 34, found when her father was diagnosed with Factor V Leiden thrombophilia, a rare bloodclotting disorder. “I got tested, and discovered that I have the condition, too,” she says. Diaz now knows that because the disorder may prevent her body from dissolving blood clots, she’ll need to be closely monitored if she ever has surgery. “Genetics have a big effect

necessary to go beyond aunts, uncles, and grandparents when you trace your medical lineage. What are you looking for? Conditions that family members have been diagnosed with, ages at which they were diagnosed, and risk factors or behaviors—“if your mother had lung cancer, note whether she was a smoker,” Harrison says. You can also find out more about the countries of origin of your relatives, which can help you figure out what diseases your family might be prone to. Once you have the information, share it with your family and update it yearly.

Consider a cubical structure composed of unit cubes (like a child’s building blocks), four on an edge. Without drawing the structure or actually assembling it, how many cubical shapes can you envision within it? —Loren Booda, Arlington, Va. Ah, a wonderful brain exercise for you, readers, the next time you’re lying in bed, unable to fall asleep. Close your eyes, envision a transparent structure composed of clear cubes, and then count ’em up! The answer appears at the end of the column.

I know little or nothing about some subjects. When someone starts talking about one of them, I stay silent except to agree with the speaker now and then. But if he or she asks me something, I get embarrassed when I can’t give a meaningful answer. Should I just tell the person in the beginning that I’m ignorant about the subject and would like to talk about something else? —Dee Forzi, Murrieta, Calif. I’ll bet your question resonates with plenty of cocktail-party

she will have a great time, and you’ll learn a lot. And if the individual doesn’t want to go to the trouble to educate you, he or she will quickly take the initiative to change the subject without you needing to ask.

Well, when she was very little Nanny McPhee came out. I showed a print of it to her whole primary school and introduced it as a professional person. I said, “What I do is write and act. These are jobs that you might like to do when you grow up. I’m Gaia’s mom, and you’ve got parents who work, too.” I normalized it, and that seemed to help a bit. I don’t have a starry lifestyle, so she doesn’t have to deal with that. As long as we give her the tools to negotiate it, it’s okay. Because what are you going to do—say, “If I’m famous, I shouldn’t have kids because these things are too difficult”? No. This is just an extra challenge in life.
