outdo himself in 2014 at Nathan’s annual July 4 eat-off. His secret? He fasts for three days and gulps water to stretch the muscles in his esophagus. Can he still eat franks for fun? Definitely, he says. “I love to eat; I love to win.”

Q: Is it harder to make fireworks in certain colors? —Deb S., Ava, N.Y. A: “It’s harder to make blue. It’s all about balancing heat and the chemical compositions,” says Jim Souza, whose Pyro Spectaculars runs the Macy’s July 4 show, the nation’s largest. Nevertheless, blue will abound in this year’s main act: a dazzling American flag launched from the Brooklyn Bridge. Learn how they make fireworks explode into shapes at parade.com/firework.

You’ve been pals since meeting on 90210 in 1990. What’s the bond? Jennie: I can always count on Tori to be brutally honest. Like, she approves my wardrobe, which I really don’t care about. Tori: And Jennie always nurtures me and takes care of me. You’re both moms, too. Jennie: Seven kids between us! They love coming to the [Mystery Girls] set to play. Your characters are ex–TV costars who become detectives. Are they like you? Tori: Very much. Jennie’s character, Charlie, is very protective of me, and mine, Holly, is too trusting of people. Do you ever reminisce about 90210? Jennie: I have the worst memory. But I do remember my [infant] daughter Luca [born 1997] sitting herself in a shoebox in Tori’s dressing room. She loved boxes. Tori: My fondest memory is being at your house with [costar] Michael [Cudlitz, who Email your questions for played Tony Miller], drinking wine and knitting hooked rugs. You’ve both endured a ton of media scrutiny. Are there things Walter Scott to it would still surprise people to know about you? Tori: At this personality point, I feel like everyone knows everything about me. Jennie: I @parade.com. like to go to bed at, like, 8 p.m. Is that bad?

WALTER SCOTT ASKS…

Was Francis Scott Key a one-hit wonder?

–Herbert T., Kent, Wash.

A: Yes—in fact, the man who penned the lyrics for “The Star-Spangled Banner” (set to the tune of an old English pub song) was “unmusical ... and possibly tone deaf,” writes Marc Leepson in his new Key biography, What So Proudly We Hailed. See the best and worst performances of our 200-yearold national anthem at parade.com/anthem.

Stuff like that blows my mind.” He sips his coffee and adds with quiet confidence, “Also, there are some artists who are keeping an eye on me. It’s a slight competitive thing, but that’s good since I do it as well.” As bemused as Sheeran can seem about the opportunities that have come his way, he’s equally intense and driven about his career. When he was growing up in the English town of Framlingham, his parents held “millions of jobs,” he says; among them, his father was a curator at a London

art galley, and his mother was an art consultant. (These days, she sells jewelry inspired by some of her son’s lyrics and favorite candies, of which he very much approves.) He began playing guitar after seeing Eric Clapton on TV. “I was a misguided teenager,” he says. “I just needed focus, and as soon as I started writing songs and playing shows, that was my focus.” At 16, he announced he was moving to London to pursue his music; his mother was unsure, but his father gave his blessing. Once there, Sheeran displayed a savvy and determination that served him well. He gigged at small clubs and recorded and pressed up his own CDs, selling enough copies of one of them— 2,000—to pay for a plane ticket to L.A. when he was 19. There he performed on Jamie Foxx’s satellite radio channel, the Foxxhole, and wound up crashing at the actor’s house for a few days. Back in London, he eventually landed a record deal with help from manager Stuart Camp, a colleague of Elton John’s. From the start, Camp saw how sensible his client is. “The day he signed his deal, he didn’t go out for a drink,” says Camp. “He said, ‘I’m a professional now. I have to be

Sheeran’s appeal isn’t restricted to adoring females. The 23-yearold’s effortless blend of troubadour pop and hip-hop—the result of influences as disparate as Bob Dylan and Eminem— has already earned him three Grammy nominations, a gig on SNL, and multiple Today show appearances (he’ll make his fourth on July 4). The new toast of the music business, he’s one of the few artists who can collaborate with both Williams and Taylor Swift, who tapped Sheeran to join her 2013 tour, boosting his profile with her massive fan base. One minute he’s getting career advice from Elton John and the next he’s working on a new song with Usher, who met Sheeran at a dinner this past spring. “He can create images through words and melodies,” says Usher. “It’s like watching a movie.” And those are just his musicbiz buddies. Visiting Los Angeles more than a year ago, Sheeran was invited to a dinner party that turned out to be at the Malibu home of actress Courteney Cox; he serenaded her guests and crashed in her cabana. Another night, he brought along Swift and members of the band Snow Patrol (one of whom became

(Other tats include a teddy bear and an homage to Matisse, his mother’s favorite artist.) To be sure, Sheeran has had a few rock star clichĂŠ moments. He’s admitted to sampling a form of ecstasy while on vacation, passing out drunk at Aniston’s house, and having what he calls “a mini-freak-outâ€? late last year over his career and personal life, which inspired the song “I’m a Messâ€? on x. When asked about the repeated references to drinking in his songs, he says with a smile, “I’m English— that’s what we do! I don’t have a drinking problem, though.â€? ar more revealing of Sheeran’s inherent equilibrium was a “wicked nightâ€? after a Grammy Awards party in Los Angeles this year. He and some friends returned to his hotel room and everyone grabbed whatever wasn’t bolted down, piling it into the bathtub. But when Sheeran awoke the next morning and assessed the damage, “I felt so bad and said, ‘Oh, someone’s going to have to clean this up,’ â€? he recalls with a sheepish grin. “So I literally de-trashed my room and put it back to normal. If I trash a hotel room, will anyone like me more? You’re not going to have kids going, ‘Oh, that’s really cool and edgy.’ You’re probably going to get a ticked-off maid

(Fun footnote: In the video for “Sing,â€? an Ed Sheeran puppet spends a debauched evening and ends up, with the real Ed, in a thoroughly wrecked room.) Sheeran is all too aware that, if he misbehaves or insults someone, the news could easily make TMZ or Twitter—and result in lost record sales. “It’s the time of being polite,â€? he says. “Radio stations aren’t going to play you if you show up late. You have to be respectful and do your job. You can guarantee that Taylor will always be professional and polite, and if you want to be as big as her, you have to be just as professional and polite. If you’re not, radio stations will say, ‘Hmmm, he wasn’t very nice to us yesterday, but she was lovely, so we’re going to play her records.’â€? In some ways, he’s a male version of Swift: young, talented, ambitious, supremely conďŹ dent, and unafraid to leap across musical genres and write songs inspired by people in his life. The song “AďŹ re Love,â€? off his new album, is about his grandfather Bill. “I ďŹ nished writing it on the day of his funeral,â€? Sheeran says, continued on page 12 “and played

sheet of marshmallows with red spray, turning to coat on all sides. Repeat with other sheet using blue spray. Let marshmallows dry, 15 minutes. Make firecracker tips: Press 2 spice drops together. Sprinkle work surface with yellow sugar and roll out pressed drops into a thin circle. Repeat with remaining drops. Using a small round cookie cutter, cut flattened candies into 2-inch circles. Use a small knife to remove a pie-shaped wedge, about ¼ of circle. Press together 2 straight edges to create cone shape. Repeat to make 15 coneshaped tips. Assemble firecrackers: Thread 1 blue, 1 white, and then 1 red marshmallow onto each lollipop stick. Push 5 to 6 strands of red licorice laces into base of each blue marshmallow. Spoon ¼ cup frosting into a plastic sandwich bag, press out excess air, seal, and snip off ¼-inch of bag’s corner. Pipe a small dot of frosting on top of each red marshmallow and attach a yellow spice drop cone. Spread remaining frosting all over chilled cake, pulling frosting away from cake to make peaks. Sprinkle cake with yellow stars. Insert firecrackers all over, pressing into frosting to secure. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

it for my whole family. Before it went any further, I needed to get the blessing of the people I care about.” And if you’re wondering, “Don’t,” a bitter song of romantic betrayal, is “about someone who’s well known, but not Taylor,” says Sheeran, who has denied ever dating Swift (rumor has it that fellow Brit pop sensation Ellie Goulding is the song’s subject). He’s even got a 10-year plan. “I know this isn’t going to last forever. Now is the time when I’m making my musical statements and being cool and going to parties. But I don’t think I’ll be living this life in 10 years’ time. If I am, please slap me.” Where will he be instead? “Back home, bunch of kids,” he says without hesitation. “At 33, I should be starting to settle down.” He won’t name his current girlfriend, though he says she’s a chef. That Sheeran is already thinking about family doesn’t surprise Cox. “He’s extremely family-oriented,” she says. “I’ve met his dad, mom, and brother, and their love for each other is so sweet.” Back at the toy store, Sheeran’s quest to find Captain America flatlines, but then he unearths something more rare: a Ronald McDonald figurine. On his way out of the shop, he spots an Elmo doll and gently tickles its belly. Always happy to make a new fan. O

n the 30th anniversary of the release of Br uce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A.., let’s kick off this appreciation of his seminal album by, well, trashing some of it. In June 1984, as my friends and I watched the Boss cavort in a cheesy video with a then unknown Courteney Cox on MTV, we were aghast. In the ’70s we’d fallen in love with Bruce’s gritty rock anthems. I was a songwriter, too, back then; Born to Run had blown me away. So “Dancing in the Dark,” the Boss’s slick new single, seemed like a sellout. We called it “Disco in the Dark.” But the best music demands time to get its hooks, and message, into you. I spent the first part of the summer of ’84 locked in my bedroom recording new songs, trying to bring the Boss’s influence into my music; then I drove across America with my friends on a seemingly endless road trip, listening to his new album. By the time we got my family’s station wagon from Florida to L.A., then wound our way up the California coast, it had worked its way into our hearts. The Boss was displaying a songwriting finesse few other rock musicians could match. Consider “No Surrender,” a lastminute addition to the album that showed Bruce at his joyous best. “I’m on Fire” still transports me to a sweltering July 4th fireworks show somewhere on the Gulf Coast. We spent many a late night that summer racing through sleepy coastal towns, shouting the

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough harks back to the summer of 1984, and the hit song that pitted his political idol against his musical hero words to “Darlington County.” Those were our glory days, and Born in the U.S.A. was our summer soundtrack. Seven Billboard Top 10 singles came out of that album, but it was more than a hit factory. Bruce’s seventh studio effort was also a requiem for the American dream, a working-class hero’s love song to folks busted and bruised by Vietnam, heartbreak, and the passage of time. Like the Eagles’ Hotel California in the ’70s and Nirvana’s Nevermind in the ’90s, Born in the

U.S.A. defined and was defined by the decade of its release. In June 1984, the Reagan Revolution was in full force. Reagan was running for a second term using the campaign slogan “It’s Morning in America,” a promise to voters that good times lay ahead. That idyllic patriotism was probably disorienting for Bruce, who wrote music that chronicled the underside of the American experience. Still, whether he liked it or not, many of the young concertgoers who idolized him also voted for our conservative president. “Born in the U.S.A.” was the song of the summer in ’84, so it

wasn’t a surprise when Reagan’s reelection team tried to trade on its popularity. In a stump speech in New Jersey, Reagan said Bruce’s lyrics held “a message of hope,” a reading that was embarrassingly off. “Born in the U.S.A.” was in fact an antiwar protest song. Reagan’s mistake didn’t hurt him—he went on to win in a historic landslide. But the flap made presidential history. Even if Springsteen rejected Reagan’s sunny patriotism, his album oozed Stars and Stripes, from the title track down to the iconic Annie Leibovitz photo on the cover. It was like tipping a hat to Reagan’s America with one hand and thumbing a nose at it with the other. And despite their dark themes, the songs were infectious. Tapping your foot to the thumping drumbeat in “Born in the U.S.A.,” singing along to the chorus, you felt good. Bruce’s heroes may have been beaten down, but you got the feeling the Boss wasn’t counting them out. They were proud, and above all, tough. Three decades later, as the rich keep getting richer, the poor keep getting poorer, and the middle class keep feeling the squeeze of changes that seem beyond their control, Bruce’s words feel as relevant as ever. My friends and I may have gagged over “Dancing in the Dark,” but we loved the rest of that album. It spoke to everyone, from postmen to presidents, in ways no other album could. And it still does. The extreme hand-washing is entirely to benefit the patient. But surgical gloves are added for two reasons: (1) Washing one’s hands doesn’t sterilize them, so gloves provide more protection for the patient; and (2) gloves are necessary to safeguard the surgeon and team members who will contact the patient’s blood and other body fluids. Many physicians doubleglove to strengthen this barrier because their gloves are constantly exposed to penetration from suture needles and scalpels, etc. But even double-gloving can’t fully guard against microperforations, so doctors, surgical nurses, and others may change gloves often during a single operation.
