Why did Hank Azaria do the Web series Fatherhood? –Marnie H., Los Angeles A: Azaria, 49, was exploring why men want to be dads when he learned his now wife, Katie, was pregnant. The actress, 54, goes for laughs on Mom (CBS, Mondays) and in the film Bad Words (due March 14). Your character on Mom, Bonnie, can be hilariously blunt. With some lines I think,”Gosh, that’s so mean!” I have to keep remembering it’s not me, it’s Bonnie. Is it a milestone to play a grandmother? I’ve decided I’m going to start saying I’m older than I am. When I tell people I’m 65, they’ll say, “You look amazing!” What comedienne inspires you most? The Carol Burnett Show was my bible growing up. She’s the coolest. Do you keep in touch with the gang from The West Wing? If there’s a chance to get together, we will. I love them very much. They’re my family, really. What would surprise us about you? I love to dance to hip-hop—Cypress Hill, Chubb Rock. Music inspires Do you have a me. I can’t live without it.

THE MOST fella
The least tortured comic in showbiz takes control of the most coveted chair on TV as host of The Tonight Show. Get set for Jimmy Fallon!
Š PARADE Publications 2014. All rights reserved
You Look Wonderful, Tonight
Fallon joins Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, and Conan O’Brien on the short list of Tonight Show hosts. “I’m going to put people to sleep,” he says. “Not in a Kevorkian way, but in the best way.”
hen Jimmy Fallon was in kindergarten, his teacher complained to his mother, Gloria, that he was running and smiling too much. “At a parent-teacher conference, they always have to find something,” says Gloria. “I let it go. ” Good call, Mom. At 39, her boy is still moving fast and smiling constantly. Inside his Rockefeller Center office on a mid-January day, the former Saturday Night Live star is bopping about to Bruce Springsteen’s new album, High Hopes, in preparation for the rocker’s fourth appearance on NBC’s Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. (He and the Boss will rework “Born to Run” to spoof Gov. Chris Christie’s Bridgegate scandal, a segment that quickly joins Fallon’s exploding canon of viral hits.) Dressed in a striped shirt and jeans, Fallon is both disarmingly open and seriously cheerful. “I wake up happy,” he declares. He proudly shows off framed photos, including one of his 2007 wedding to film and TV producer Nancy Juvonen, 46, and shares an iPhone video he shot that morning of the couple’s 6-monthold daughter, Winnie, enthusiastically gumming mashed potatoes in her high chair in their downtown Manhattan apartment. “She’s the best baby,” he gushes, explaining that Winnie is named after Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, where he proposed to Juvonen, and because “she’s a win-win.” The couple tried for five years to have a child before turning to a surrogate, a period Fallon says was “rough. I was doing everything—injecting Nancy, drinking Chinese herbal tea, sleeping upside down. It’s just tough.” Now he’s relishing family life. “She’s so juicy and fun,” he says of his daughter. “She squeals and chirps. Honestly, you’d think we’re in a Disney cartoon.”

Catholic,” says Fallon, “and being Irish means parties, fun, singing, drinking. That’s where I started performing.” James Thomas Fallon Jr. was born in Brooklyn 11 months after his sister, Gloria, a humor writer. The family soon moved to the town of Saugerties in upstate New York. “We wanted to raise the kids in the country,” says his homemaker mother. (His dad, now retired, was a repairman and then a technical writer for IBM.) Little Jimmy began mimicking stars early.
“We have him on tape at 2 doing Jimmy Cagney, going, ‘You dirty rat,’ ” says his mom. By age 7, he was watching Saturday Night Live with his parents, reenacting sketches and dreaming of becoming a cast member. “I’d do Dana Carvey voices,” says Fallon, who also loved Chevy Chase and John Belushi in SNL reruns. As a high school senior, he won first prize at a contest for amateur impressionists at Bananas, a comedy club in Poughkeepsie. Arlene Jamison, who owned the club with her husband, says Fallon showed up with his act inked on his palm and running up his arm. “He was nervous but had all that energy that he still has. And he was sweet as can be,” she recalls. He emceed at Bananas on weekends and honed his comedy chops while attending the College of St. Rose in Albany, N.Y., where he majored in computer science before switching to communications. With his parents’ blessing, he left school 15 credits shy of graduating in 1995 after a manager who’d seen his tape urged him to come to Los Angeles. “If it didn’t work out, he could always make up his credits,” says his mom. (In 2009 St. Rose granted Fallon his degree as well as an honorary doctorate.) In L.A., he couch-surfed, took comedy and acting classes, gigged at clubs, and told anyone who’d listen that his goal was to be on SNL. At his second audition for the show, in 1998, he made longtime producer Lorne Michaels laugh with his sly impression of SNL alum Adam Sandler. Boom! Fallon snared his dream job at 23. “I learned so much there,” he says fondly of his six years at SNL, which included Weekend Update duty alongside Tina Fey. “At 11:30, you have to do a show. You have to let go of whatever happened that week and be focused and swing for the fences.” It’s a lesson he’s mindful of to this day. Come taping time, “The blinders go on. I’m here to entertain. That’s my job.” After SNL, he tried Hollywood. “I knew I wasn’t strong enough to do drama,” he says. “So I’m like, yeah, I guess I’ll do a comedy.” When Taxi (2004) and Fever Pitch (2005) both failed to open big, his career went icy cold. There was a bright spot: He met Juvonen while making Fever Pitch, which she produced along

Fatherhood isn’t the only major change in allon’s life. Starting tomorrow night, he’s taking F over as host of one of the most venerable and profitable programs in television history: NBC’s Tonight Show. It’s a marquee job, a still-shiny feather in the tail of the struggling Peacock network. Tonight’s last host, Jay Leno, who stepped down Feb. 6, maintained the show’s No. 1 position for most of his 22-year run (minus the awkward eight months when Conan O’Brien had the gig); last year he drew more than 3 million viewers on weeknights at 11:35 p.m. Earlier hosts are TV legends: There’s frisky founder Steve Allen (1954–57), mercurial Jack Paar (1957–62), and quick-witted Johnny Carson, who reigned for nearly 30 years before retiring in 1992. “I understand how big this job is,” Fallon says, “and I don’t want to let people down.” He will bring to the show the same boyish enthusiasm and creative drive that are the hallmarks of his successful run as host of Late Night since 2009. That program, which follows Tonight, has become known for Fallon’s skillful impressions of celebrities, satirical sketches, and musical spoofs, plus his knack for cajoling famous names to join him in being silly. He persuaded Brad Pitt to yodel, President Obama and Mitt Romney to slow-jam the news, and Tom Cruise to crack raw eggs on his noggin. “From the very beginning, he looked like he was having a good time,” says veteran talk show host Dick Cavett, who has become friendly with Fallon. “He’s accepted; he’s liked. His chances [on Tonight] are as good as you can get.” Comedians are notorious for often being miserable human beings off-camera, insecure and misanthropic. Not Fallon. “He’s definitely a unicorn in that village,” says Juvonen. This is a man who, knowing his wife is an epic John Denver fan, paid to have a brick with her name on it and the words “Happiness Is a Choice” placed on a path leading to a statue of the late singer in Colorado. (When it’s her turn for gift-giving, Juvonen heads to Williams-Sonoma. Fallon loves his gourmet gadgets, including a sous-vide machine and a device that both steams and purees vegetables, which he uses to make baby food for Winnie.) Credit his geniality to a happy childhood and continuing close family ties. “I grew up Irish 8 | february 16, 2014

It was the best thing that ever happened to me.” They weathered the fallow period in Fallon’s career together. “You’re a little depressed that you’re not wanted,” he says of his Hollywood phase. “We’d go out to bars, have drinks, and I’d sing with the band.” Was he drinking too much? “It wasn’t like I was blacking out or getting into fights,” he says. Adds Juvonen, “It wasn’t like, ‘Head to rehab.’ He was just trying to figure out what’s next.” What came next was a welltimed call from Michaels, a mentor and friend since Fallon’s SNL days, offering him the Late Night gig (Michaels is the show’s executive producer). He said Fallon would be a natural; he was right. After a move back to New York and five successful years at Late Night, Fallon is now primed for Tonight. This time, the passing of the torch is being handled with more finesse than in 2009, when Conan O’Brien briefly held the job. Fallon and Leno are friendly: “We talk like twice a month,” says

He knows that many viewers will catch him on Tonight via DVR or online, but he’s hopeful that millions will tune in to the actual late-night telecast. “When I was a kid, I’d ask my parents, ‘Can I stay up and watch Johnny Carson?’ It was a big treat. Now some kid can ask, ‘Can I stay up and watch Jimmy Fallon?’ ” he says, as if he still can’t quite believe it. “I want to give the best I can.”

week after my husband and I moved into our house, the only organized room was the kitchen. Bottled spices lined up like soldiers waiting for marching orders. Pots and pans nestled in drawers under the range. Favorite pot holders— nearly all of them stained—beckoned from their hooks. So what if I was still surrounded by boxes? I could cook for friends. This house was ready to be our home. My passion for cooking started in high school. Mom was a nurse’s aide and worked many holidays. She left detailed recipe instructions and called during breaks to make sure I hadn’t incinerated the house. By college, she relied on me. During my singlemother years, cooking took on a sense of urgency. In most divorces, you lose not only a spouse but a lot of inlaws. My family gatherings had been reduced by half, but I was determined that ours would be a merry table.

Six days after our r ecent move, I tied on my ancient apron and hummed as I chopped and measured, sautéed and peeled. Slowly, the vegetarian chili bubbled up, conjuring years of memories with the dear friends who were coming for dinner. Gaylee, Jackie, Kate, Sue, and Maura: They know me best, and love me anyway. We passed the corn bread and grated cheese with no mention of calories. We quizzed one another endlessly, filling the gaps of busy lives. We raised our glasses and toasted our stubborn commitment to friendship. Through it all, we laughed. Mercy, how we laughed in this house that is now our home.

What inspired you to write your book? In 1996, I moved to Florence with my family and began studying art and architecture. One day as I walked across the Ponte Vecchio, the only bridge in the city that wasn’t destroyed by the Nazis, I wondered: How did so many works of art survive the most destructive war in history? That set me down a path of curiosity that led to the Monuments Men. Was it tough to find them? I interviewed 17 Monuments O fficers—only five are alive today—of the original 350 or so. These men and women were incredibly great letter writers, and they shared their letters and experiences from the war with me.

The Real Monuments Men
How a coalition of unlikely heroes managed to save the world’s great art from the Nazis By Bill Hewitt Can you give some sense of the scale of the Nazi looting during the war? In spring 1945, Monuments Officers began finding mines, caves, and castles throughout Europe filled with hundreds of thousands of stolen objects. By the time the Monuments Men were done, they’d recovered over 5 million works: tapestries, paintings, sculptures, church bells, stained glass.
the Nazis for four years. She understood German, but didn’t let them know it. If they had caught her, they would have killed her.
Your book details the experience of Rose Valland [on whom Cate Blanchett’s character is based], a Louvre curator who helped the Monuments Men. Rose Valland is one of the great heroines of World War II. She’s this remarkable Frenchwoman who was a spy under the eyes of
Are there notable works that are thought to have survived the war but are still missing? Probably the single most important painting that’s missing is Raphael’s Portrait of a Young Man, which came from a museum in Krakow. The governor general of the Nazi-occupied area of Poland
and Nazi leader Hermann Goering went back and forth over this painting, one seizing it from the other. These guys were like two kids fighting over marbles. When the governor general was arrested after the war, the Raphael was gone. Monuments Man Bernie Taper spent two years investigating every lead and just ran into dead ends. But that picture is out there somewhere. [To see an image of it, go to parade.com/art.] The point is these things can be found—look at the works discovered in Munich recently, including art by Picasso and Matisse. Some artworks fell into the hands of ordinary soldiers on both sides who brought them home after the war. What about those? We want people to be looking for these things, stored in basements and hanging on walls, while their parents and grandparents are still alive and can tell us where the items came from. That’s one of the film’s great perks: If you get the public engaged in locating these items, they can help write the final chapter of World War II history. View some of the priceless artworks recovered by the Monuments Men at parade.com/art.

mid the carnage of World War II, Adolf Hitler d evised a plan to steal E urope’s finest artworks and display them in his own Führermuseum in Linz, Austria. The Allied effort to thwart the Nazis fell to a little-known group of soldiers—curators, archivists, and o ther art experts in civilian life—charged with tracking down the looted works across E urope, starting in the war’s last year. Their saga is portrayed in the new movie The Monuments Men, directed by and starring George Clooney. But the story was first told in a best-selling book of the same t itle. We asked author Robert Edsel how he came to join their quest.

Ask Marilyn By Marilyn vos Savant
I told some people at work that when my kids were babies, I could smell it when they had a fever. They all laughed at me. Was I wrong? —Camille, via email
Nope. By far the most common reasons for children to have fevers are colds, flus, sinus infections, and the like. All of
Word We Need gazooka (noun) an explosive sneeze. these illnesses may cause mouth breathing, which dries the oral membranes and allows bacteria to grow. This means your child’s breath may not smell as fresh and sweet as usual. And if the fever causes sweating, that may add to the odor. Regardless, I’ll bet you have a sensitive sense of smell to notice this.
